A Show of Faith

Rate this book
From the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Wife Between Us comes a twisty short story about a chance encounter that tests the boundaries of a mother’s love.

Blair Martin’s days rarely vary: she gets up, goes for a run, and then heads to work at a Manhattan literary agency where she nurtures authors through the publishing process. Her nights, spent alone in her too-large apartment, are similarly predictable.

Then on an ordinary Wednesday, Blair enters her office building and spies a lost wallet. When Blair tracks down the owner, they arrange for a simple exchange. But the young woman, Maya, seems so vulnerable, much like Blair’s own daughter, Faith, who died tragically just last year, and Blair is unable to simply walk away. Tentatively, Blair takes Maya under her wing. Both women are all too familiar with loss, and they find solace in spending time together. But as their connection deepens, they discover that each of them is harboring secrets much darker than grief.

the setup…
Blair Martin is a literary agent in Manhattan whose life is now one ongoing routine since her only daughter Faith died last year and her marriage fell apart. That routine is broken one day when she finds a lost wallet and decides to locate the owner. Maya turns out to be a young woman not much older than Faith who is alone and struggling financially. On an impulse, Blair invites her to lunch and soon takes her under her wing. A good thing?

the heart of the story…
One of the things I love about short stories is they move rather quickly and, if crafted well, characters deliver little surprises throughout that journey. I began with one impression of Blair but she took on curious edges the more I got to know her. Maya was an enigma and, if I’m honest, I never trusted her because I just sensed something off. When I finally got her point of view, she was even more mysterious. All this had the effect of me not being able to take a pause until I finished!

the narration…
I was gleefully surprised that two skilled narrators were used for this brief story and they both inhabited their characters extremely well. I loved their interpretations.

the bottom line…
This one grabbed me from the start and never let go. As much as I thought I knew Blair and Maya, both delivered surprises at the end, things I’m still reflecting over. Listening to the story made this an even better reading experience, too. Great irony and two wonderful narrators.

A SHOW OF FAITH is a psychological fiction short story from the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks. I have read all her books, and am never disappointed. This short story is another winner for her to add to her list.

The Wife Between Us (2018) (with Sarah Pekkanen)
An Anonymous Girl (2018) (with Sarah Pekkanen)

A Show of Faith (2023)

This is my review of A Show of Faith.

Blair is a single Manhattan literary agent that works in the publishing field supporting authors. She had lost her eighteen-year-old daughter, Faith, a year and a half ago, where she had been found dead in her dorm room due to a drug overdose. Her death led to the end of her marriage to David.

Blair had been a good mum who had brought Faith groceries, tied her room, and sent her care packages. In other words, Blair had spoiled and given too much to their daughter.

Now Blair’s free time and nights are spent alone in her large apartment.

One day, while entering the concourse of her office building, Blair discovers a lost wallet. She does the right thing and tracks down the owner, and they arrange for a simple exchange.

But when Blair meets the young woman, Maya, she senses that this woman needs help. Both women are familiar with loss, and Blair offers her assistance and friendship.

But both are concealing secrets much darker than grief.

This was a great short story, well packed with drama, and would have made an excellent novel. I could’ve read an entire book like this. Well done!

This was a super fun little novella with plenty of twists and turns!

Blair is mourning the loss of her daughter and her marriage when she meets needy Maya, all through a chance meeting by the return of a lost wallet. Maya is soon taken under Blair's wing and before long both of their secrets start to come to light.

I loved how this was written from both Blair and Maya's perspectives! You get a glimpse into the psyche of each woman and you're given more clues as to how their stories will weave together.

It was a great short story, but it was just that. Short. I think it could have benefitted from another 15-20 pages, as it felt like it was rushed at the ending. Overall, though, solid 4 stars!

This was an unsettling short story with a creepy vibe, but it just felt Incomplete. With a rather abrupt ending, the story felt more like the beginning of a novel rather than a short story in itself, and I was left wondering what would come next for Blair and Maya. I would love to see this story become a prequel to a full-length novel featuring these two women.

I love Greer’s work she co-authors with Sarah Pekkanen, so when I saw this short story came out - I read it right away!! Her writing is very smooth and had me hooked from the start. I read it in two days as it was very bingeable. This would have made a great longer novel, but was just as good as a short story. She does a great job of writing to make you feel like you are in the room as scenes unfold. Definitely a perfect quick read that enthralls you !

2.5 for most of it to three stars for the ending 🌟

This author is hit and miss for me.. I haven't liked the other work as much as the first book 😕. This was one wasn't bad, just okay... getting more creepy towards the end.

One on hand, it was a good ending but on the other, I was kinda hoping for more after that too

Good short story

I didn’t realize this was a short-story until I opened it.
The story is good but in my opinion doesn’t read like a story -it reads like s sample of a novel - which I would purchase.
As a short story it is a bit disappointing because there is no real ending. Nothing to reveal the motivation behind “Maya’s” real motivation in befriending Blair.
As a teaser for novel - it had me hooked. The potential for a gripping novel is there however as a short -story it falls… short.

So what happened

It feels like we're left hanging. Like there is no end, an unfinished story. Blair takes Mara under her wing but when Mara tries to tell the truth the book ends.

Leaves me confused. Did Blair drug Mara and then put her in Faith's bed? Has Blair just flipped and is replacing her deceased daughter with Mara because of her depression?

Like I said you're just left hanging with no end.

An easy breezy little story about grief and where it might lead us. A lot of short stories tend to be cryptic and require digging deep for figuring out the purpose of the story and I don’t usually get into that type of story…but with this…I think I got what she was trying to impart or at least, my take-away from it. Also, the narration was top-notch.

This is a great tale - all the good parts of a domestic thriller, but read in one sitting.

I recommend this to just about anyone !

I’ve read and loved all of Greer Hendricks’s books co-written with Sarah Pekkanen! Greer just released this Amazon short story that is free for prime members 🤩

▪️super quick & can be read in one sitting
▪️twisty & suspenseful
▪️dual POVs

I don’t read short stories often so I don’t have a lot to compare it to, but I was very impressed by how well-done the story was — seeing as it was only about 40 pages. I’m going to need more from Greer now!

This was an interesting concept, but very predictable and not as shocking as a short story should be, if its job is to leave a lasting impression with the reader.

A Show of Faith was an intriguing read following a woman who has a chance encounter with a young woman who reminds her of her late daughter.

Blair Martin's days have become predictable in the year since her daughter Faith died. She gets up, goes for a run, heads to work at a Manhattan literary agency, and then her nights are spent alone in her apartment. One day Blair spots a lost wallet when she heads into her office and after tracking down the owner, agrees to meet for a simple exchange. But when Blair meets Maya, she reminds her so much of Faith that Blair is unable to just walk away. As the women get to know each other, they soon discover that the other is keeping secrets.

I've enjoyed several of Greer Hendricks' books that she co-wrote with Sarah Pekkanen so I was looking forward to reading something she wrote solo. The premise of this one was interesting but I think how short it was hindered the plot a bit. I enjoyed the connection that developed between Blair and Maya and I was curious to see where it would go. The bulk of the story is from Blair's point of view but it switches over to Maya for the last quarter or so of the book. It was clear once we switched to Maya's point of view that all was not as it seemed and I liked getting to see why. I will say the ending of this story was rather abrupt and I felt like there should have been a bit more in order to wrap everything up.

Overall A Show of Faith was an enjoyable read but it definitely could have benefited from being a bit longer.

*3.5

I've read all of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's thrillers - they always have intense, compelling plots with characters I find myself rooting for. So I was looking forward to reading this. I love short stories, and I was excited to see what I'd be getting. I didn't read the blurb, so I went in blind.

The writing was strong, as it usually is for this author, and I liked the twisty turns of the plot. The ending hit some sad and disturbing notes. I just wish it had gone a bit further - a touch more insight into the closing motivations of the two characters would've pushed this story into excellent territory.

3.5/5 stars.

Blair is a literary agent whose life has been ground down to a dull never ending ache of loss. She gets up, goes to work, comes home. Eats, sleeps and begins again.

Then one day as she enters work, she finds a small red wallet that she turns in to a guard. At end of the day, no one has returned to get it so she takes it home with her to search for the possible owner. She finds that owner quickly and discovers that the young woman who lost the wallet touches a deep need in herself and she finds ways to continue getting to know this girl. The girl reciprocates.

At that point I begun to lose trust in the girl, Mara and found myself dwelling on some things she said or did. I was worrying more and more about Blair when the story closed with a big twist and a final sentence that made the hair on my arms stand up!

Chess; Not Checkers

I was looking for a quick read to help me reach a reading goal. This book turned out to be just what I needed. It had an interesting plot. Both women seemed to be struggling with their mental health. They were both so secretive, too. When Blair started to figure things out, I couldn’t wait to see how she would address it. I wasn’t expecting her next move. It was an entertaining plot twist. I enjoyed the mic drop ending.
