Mr. Darcy Unmasked: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
What if Elizabeth Bennet met Fitzwilliam Darcy in an entirely different setting? What if he wasn't the most eligible bachelor, but rather a man with no money, a hidden identity, and a slew of dark secrets? Would their love still blossom?

Mr. Collins would be the most eventful thing to happen that autumn. That’s until her father hires a new stable hand, and Lizzy’s alarm bells chime.
Something about this tall, handsome stranger with a strong northern accent isn’t quite right. David Davenport claims to be a pauper living in a cabin with his younger sister, yet he talks like a proper--if slightly haughty--gentleman. On top of that, he’s awfully chummy with his patron, young Mr. Bingley.
Lizzy is certain the Davenports are hiding something. Determined, she set out to find out what.
The trouble is, the closer she gets to David, the harder her heart pounds.
While Lizzy struggles with her growing attraction to the mysterious man she knows she could never be with, Mr Collins arrives and unmasks David Davenport as one Fitzwilliam Darcy. A wanted murderer.
Darcy goes on the run, and soon the constable arrives to report Mr. Collins is dead, and Mr. Darcy is the prime suspect.
As Lizzy is caught in Mr. Darcy’s web of secrets, she must Can she trust her heart and help him prove his innocence? Or will she allow others to make up her mind for her—and risk never seeing him again?

Mr. Darcy Unmasked is a sweet and clean variation of Jane Austen’s timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice, and it’s above 60000 words long.

Great story

Loved this Darcy and colonel Fitzwilliam ànd Bingley were my heroes. Wish the real villans had been punished. But any story is a good one when the main villan dies. Good love story.

Really enjoyed this story a lot. I've read a few novels set in the era as well as variations of Jane Austen's work and often, they are riddled with errors. This one, while not perfect, was a nice surprise. I liked the 'Darcy as a commoner' angle and seeing their connection develop.
I also really liked reading about a new character entering the scene. The murder mystery was done well.

A romance across the social classes

Although there was pride and prejudice between Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet at their initial meeting as most readers may think, their social status are reversed as the Darcys are constrained to play paupers. Despite Mr. Darcy being beneath her in social class, Elizabeth sees him as a gem of the first order and nevertheless, falls in love with the gentleman who has fallen below and beneath all who knew him in his previous state.

It is Elizabeth’s attention, care and love for him that Darcy finds not only the hope but also a stronger motivation to clear his name and restore him to the esteemed and well-respected gentleman that he once was.

This is filled with adventure, intrigue and suspense. Yet, what abundance it has in those departments meant a lesser focus on the love affair between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. This reader had hoped for more: more tender exchanges between the two with strict propriety observed, more intimate moments to establish a stronger connection, more affecting glances and touches that may had built a stronger proof that the two have indeed truly fallen deeply in love to justify such sentiments from a intelligent lady as Elizabeth Bennet and an honorable worthy gentleman such as Fitzwilliam Darcy. If not for that, this reader would have given this a 5 stars.

I have read several other stories in which Darcy is not rich nor connected when he meets Elizabeth so this was not a new premise for me.

In this story Darcy has a cousin, Thomas Darcy, who plots to not only take over Pemberley but also to wed and then murder Georgiana and to frame Darcy for a murder Thomas has planned. Darcy overhears the last two and so runs away with Georgiana to Netherfield, believing Bingley is the only one he can trust. This cousin has the help of Darcy's Aunt & Uncle Matlock and Lady Catherine along with the aid of a Vicar in asserting that Darcy was born out of wedlock and, thus, cannot be recognized as his father's heir.

In Hertfordshire, living in a small cottage on Netherfield property, Darcy and Georgiana use fake names while Darcy applies for employment with Mr. Bennet as a horse trainer, mainly. Of course, he and Elizabeth become friendly. However, without money or property and with a murder charge hanging over his head Darcy can offer nothing to Elizabeth. PLUS he dare not share his story as he wants to keep her safe.

Mr. Collins figures in this story as he recognizes Darcy when he comes planning to marry a cousin. The two argue, Collins leaves with Darcy following him...trying to persuade him to listen to his side. Then Collins is also found dead and Darcy is blamed. The Colonel and Bingley work to help Darcy out, searching for the vicar and looking into the relations' situations - why would they lie?

This story wraps up quickly and has a short epilogue. I would have liked more at the end. Some of the language is awkward and, as another review said, some words are misused, i.e., magister instead of magistrate.

Thomas Darcy is plotting to take control of Pemberley. As a result, Fitzwilliam and Georgiana Darcy are running for their lives and find themselves living in a cottage on Mr. Bingley's rented estate of Netherfield. Darcy finds employment at Longbourn under an assumed name, all the while, finding Elizabeth Bennet everything he could hope for. However, is living as a laborer, far beneath her.

As the story progresses, they must deal with their mutual attraction and all the drama surrounding the Darcy family. He needs to clear his name in order to be worthy of her.

The writing of this story is awkward. The fact that the coach tilts as people get in was mentioned MULTIPLE times. Why is this even relevant - it didn't tip over! There are phrases and situations that seemed out of period. Also after all the build up, the tension of the plot is resolved in just a few paragraphs.

This had an interesting premise but was such a mess that I can’t recommend it.

There was much modern language including button down shirt, newsboy cap and the 1970s phrase ‘on the same page’.

There were missing words and mistakes like they when he was meant; reign instead of rein, and the word ‘magister’ was repeatedly used instead of the correct word magistrate.

One day, there were two sunsets! I should have stopped then, but I did want to know what happened.

The denouncement was a disappointment with some people not having any consequences at all for a serious lie. It’s like the author just gave up to end the book.

Mr Darcy a commoner?

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written and polished variation. We have Mr Darcy living as a commoner after a false accusation and trying desperately to prove his innocence and regain Pemberley.
Lizzy started out quite judgmental due to a misunderstanding, but I loved seeing her warm to her father's new helper.

The plot was a page turner from start to finish and the resolution worked very well!

This had an interesting premise though the execution needs some help. The story jumping straight in with no backstory of what happened that lead Mr Darcy to this spot made it difficult to get into the story. I’m glad it was explained later, but still. Also there are quite a few word errors in this story (for example, mane instead of man, they instead of that, etc).

Otherwise this was a quick read with an HEA.

thourghly enjoyable.

Well written, mystery to solve, some angst. But Darcy should of had more first hand knowledge of the workings of an estate
since he owned one. Oh well still a very good tale.

Intriguing

This was a very intriguing story. A exciting, dangerous romantic story.

My only negative was the use of the
"Faith" too much. Once or twice is fine but at least 9 times.

I still loved the story.
