It's heartbreaking to see that so many of these names were chosen by mothers whose other children died. Sometimes a child was given a non-name or a name of an animal, in hopes that the deity would overlook this child. On a lighter note, Dufu is an Ethiopian or Kenyan nickname whose English equivalent is "Old Fart."

This book is my main source for African names. I've used it so much it's split in two!
