Ok, while I'm definitely a fan of this author, and the book is well written, this was a tough read for me. It kept feeling like a calamity of errors and frustrating issues to deal with. Ongoing inability or unwillingness to accept obvious circumstances and adapt to them. Foolish, unnecessary mistakes that anyone with a modicum of common sense would know better than to do. A pair of 4 year old food critics raised to eat nothing but organic, healthy foods (unrealistic) causing grandparents problems trying to feed them during an already disastrous, apocalyptic scenario resulting in trading valuable resources to get foods they'll agree to eat. No one expects average people to be survival experts, but the endless string of mistakes and bad choices that continually plague this group resulting in lost gear, transportation, and life manifests into ongoing frustration and annoyance for the reader leaving you want to scream - "Seriously, again!" I really hope the next installment avoids this trend, or I'll likely never finish it.

Update: I've finished the series and the other books were a notable improvement.

The story is well written

The story is well written and fast paced with a great plot, buuuttt I’m surprised at how anxious and weepy most of the female characters are and how reliant they are to their male counterparts for support. I’m not looking for or wanting Rambo G.I. Jane women. However, I was definitely put out by the character weakness displayed here. Only grandma had any gumption.

Cringy, self-centered, misery fest, with no character growth whatsoever….

I did like the 1st book in T.L. Payne’s Desperate Age Series … enough to overlook (cringe through) more than a few things.
I stopped reading the 2nd book in this series almost to the end, at 89%, just because I couldn’t take any of it anymore.
I’m not going to even waste my time on a lengthy review here.
Other than to say, & especially if, you are a post-apoc fan in any fashion this story will get under your skin on so many levels.
Most especially the lead female character. She is so totally weak, clueless, & shows ZERO growth over time that it’s infuriating to a ridiculous extent.
Her husband, he’s almost as bad.
(Now — the old folks in this series, THEY are people to be admired!)
But the patheticness of the lead female makes this entire series not worth your time.
In ANY TYPE of societal — not even collapse — but societal upset of any manner, in all reality … she & her weak partner would have been in the 1st wave of those killed.
I’m ONLY giving 2 Stars instead of 1 solely based on the fact that I made it to Book 2. And that was accomplished with the sole hope that our two “heroes” would evolve & grow stronger.
They never do.
(Just imagine scenes … over & over again … of “that female” who somehow manages to trip & fall constantly in the face of danger whilst never able to get back up without someone else having to stop & run back to help her do so.
And her constantly wringing her hands & whining about everything. Her never wanting to help others, yet expecting everyone else in the world to allllways help her. (HER needs & wants; her family, are The Most Important in the world, after all…..)
DEMANDING this help, even for the most absurd &/or selfish missions she is not at all capable of executing even with skilled assistance.
And somehow, even after alllll her failings, still being able to pull off being the biggest pessimist ever. Annnd — her husband not being much better …)
For instance, every single time she yelled her husband’s name EXTREMELY LOUDLY, in the otherwise silent & treacherous apocalyptic environment, I prayed that would be the last time she would make that particular mistake. That she’d learn, adapt, become wiser …. & eventually after that never ever happened - that someone would just shoot her or “hubby” already finally & release me from my own suffering.
Thus, just skip it. So many other single books & series in this, & similar, genres are out there for your enjoyment & reading time!
This one is just a cringy, self-centered, misery fest, with no character growth whatsoever.

This was a different take on an EMP apocalyptical situation, I did like the different characters, Ethan and Brooke, and Ethan parents, Nina and Robert, that are currently taking care of Ethan and Brooke twin children, and when the SHTF Ethan and Brooke are really far away (as an european, I am not really sure how far they’re currently away, but it really seems a really long distance) but me as a mother I relate to Brooke, if I was in that situation, going back to my kids it would be the first thing on my mind, and if I was Brooke I would get that across more often to Ethan, that being said, I don’t think I would be able to leave the kids that we helped save in an hospital when the SHTF, at least not until I knew that they had someone to look after them, I could also feel the distress that Nina and Robert feel because they know they have to take care of the twins, children have many needs, I dread to think what would happen if I couldn’t make grocery runs my youngest is also a very picky eater…
ohhh I just need to say this out loud I really loved tank, he is such a good boy, if you like to have a smart dog in your books hey, this character is for you ^___^.

I wont disclosure what happened because that’s for me to know and for you to find out, there’s lots of action in the book, it gets really real and many people loses their lives, some you like better than others, and others you wish the characters got to know who they were before hand, yeah you’ll know who he is…

I got to enjoy the audiobook, read by T.L. Howell, I think this is the second time I have listened to an audiobook read by him, he really tries to make different voices, but I wish he had a female counterpart to help reading the female voices, but he did a decent work overall. I did enjoy the audiobook and I recommend the experience.

I got a free Audible code to listen to this book and this is my honest opinion.

I enjoyed the overall story and I would read other books in the series but I just can't because there were too many editing errors and other things that bugged me. I know the writer was in a rush to publish this book, had to be because the editing is NOT up to par.

The female characters are not realistic (esp. living in today's world). Today, many women are much more independant but these women were so clingy...."Oh, please don't go. Protect me from the very bad bad bad man!" Even the way the author wrote sounded dumb. No one actually talks the way he or she writes.

Poor writing...He helped her up by her wrist. No, it should have read...He gently clasped her wrists and lifted her battered body to her feet...or something like that. Also, there is NO way two young kids would say NO! to candy bars and other junk food that all kids love.

Payne's writing is also very repetitive. I think the author mentions the accident were the car ends up in the resevoir at least five times. And I kept reading "I have to get back to my kids!" over and over and over and over. See what I mean?

TL needs a good writer's manual, a much better editor and beta readers that know how to read critically and give valuable comments to a not-so-good writer (but one that could be much better).
Payne has self-published several books in just a few years, like many other writers. Alas, quantity NEVER trumps quality! Sorry to be so tough, just trying to be honest and call it like I see it.

This book was decently written with only a few editing issues. The story itself was fine and set up the common but tense situation of being stranded far from home in the aftermath of an EMP. We also had the grandparents and kids sheltering at home for the other side of the story. However, the telling of the story suffered from some uneven execution. There was the realistic scenario of a group of strangers deciding to travel together for safety, but the replay of emotions bogged down the action. The women, in general, were fairly weak, dependent on the men and prone to repetitive emotional reflection. There were some inconsistent story points as well. At one point, Ethan says he does not know exactly where his friend Lance lives, but then is later able to run directly to it from the hospital. The hospital is overrun with injured people and trying to prioritize resources, yet the two children rescued from the river before the event (and not really injured other than some hypothermia) and their uninjured uncle are still there taking up a room. I have to imagine all people who could be released would have been. Still, I'm interested enough in the story that I will give book 2 a chance.

Enjoy the storyline though not much different than most post apocalyptic stories. Main characters trying to get home to kids after emp strike while on vacation. I think I’m always hoping for some smart tip on survival that no one thinks of. This author seems to be gun driven. Shocker, almost everyone involved has guns or manages to get them. While I realize the need for arms during times such as this, the constant reference to automatic weapons is disheartening at this time in America. We hardly need more excuses for people to run out and get them with all the shootings going on now in America- not any being brought on by self defense just bad people easily getting their hands on guns to shoot down children and shoppers and whoever else they’ve suddenly decided to target. Use guns in the story as a last resort for survival not as an only way to get where your going.

Edge of your seat action

From the beginning this series starts off strong. The characters are well developed and believable. I really like both Ethan and Brooke and their motivation to get back to their children in Oklahoma. Ethan and Brooke meet a few people and decide there is safety in numbers, so they travel together to Denver. The other characters are not as well developed or likable. There is a a lot of action throughout the whole book.

There are some editing errors, but nothing major. There is some swearing, but it is minor and although there is plenty of killing it doesn’t really focus on the gruesomeness of it. The book does end on a cliffhanger and the whole series is not out yet. I will definitely read the next book, then there is a short wait for book 3 and then book 4.

Book Review:
Panic in the Rockies: A Post Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller (Desperate Age Series, Book 1) Kindle Edition
by T. L. Payne (Author)
Among the excellent writing skills possessed by T. L. Payne are the following: 1. I was able to sense and vicariously experience the fear and dread of not knowing when the next meal would come from. – Water too! 2. Payne described the childrens’ conflicts in language typical of their age group. I had four siblings and remember that well.
This is an entertaining book, and I'm looking forward to the sequel which will be available in late April of 2023.

A book you don’t want to put stop reading

Ethan and Brooke are on their 6th wedding anniversary in Colorado when the EMP is set off over major cities of the United States.
So exciting and gripping to see what they can achieve together in their need to get home to their twin children, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
What you see in this book is some of the most disturbing and disheartening of what society could become when the electric grid goes off.
Yet, T.L.Payne brings just enough of society’s decency for us to not lose hope and to keep turning the pages for the next challenge that Ethan and Brooke will face.

a few inconsistencies

Overall a good read, but with a few inconsistencies. Such as two healthy uninjured children and their uncle being allowed to take up a room for 5 days in a hospital overflowing with sick and injured in which closets and hallways must be used for other patients. The only reason the kids had to be there was to be available when Our Heroes got around to them. At least make up a plausible reason. And Shayne’s character was not believable. There have to be at least some foreshadows even in retrospect.

Apocalyptic People

Ethan and Brooke are regular people who have to get home to their kids when the lights go out because the EMP has hit! They are tested and tried in so many ways but their determination helps them keep moving. Except for one character, Shayne, who does not make sense to me, all the characters are believable. I could see this happening so it’s a good read and I think you will enjoy it!

Good Book

This is a good book. A different storyline with well rounded characters. Plenty of mystery and action as the main characters leave the Rockies to Denver. Many perils along the way.
The plot surrounds a couple trying to get home to their twins.
The twins are in the care of their grandparents in Tulsa, O.K.
The storyline switches between the couples travels in Colorado and the parent's home in Tulsa.
This is a very good story which I think everyone will enjoy.

good but not great

The story itself is good but lacks consistency.
He doesn’t know where his friends house is then he just goes right to it.
I found the author went on a bit much from time to time with mental thoughts which could have been much shorter.
I wanted to quit reading at the beginning when in a crisis the wife’s thoughts seemed to take 20 minutes before calling 911.

I would have rated higher as I like the author and the topic but for some reason I was annoyed with the characters. I couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe some of their actions bothered me as I thought they were stupid. I also felt like the book could have been longer. The entire book covers them going from Estes Park to Denver. Feels like stretching the story out to make more books in the series.

Couldn't put it down!

Just AS I was getting to some exciting parts. The lights in our town went out and everything was dark. I start thinking? Oh, no, ! An EMP? It was terrifying 😳 at first, every light was out. Then 20 minutes later some people's personal generators came on and a few lights appeared, then another half hour electricity was restored. Good book...I don't know about the future but we should prepare better!

A tad bit redundant

It throws me after reading about a situation that happened in a back story and it keeps popping up in the thoughts of the characters, over and over like somehow I might have forgot it.. The lack of self protective thoughts how ever, was very scarce. At what point do you begin to realize, that taking a life is something you're going to have to do to survive evil intentions?

A Great Start To Another Addictive Payne Series!

Great start to another great Apocalyptic Survival series!! Payne writes the most addictive series!

I knew joining a group they didn’t know wouldn’t be a smart idea, but some of the people really needed them.

This started out with an action packed scene before the lights went out! I was already on the edge of my seat and it was like that throughout the book! I’m looking forward to book two!

This was excellent! Once again a brilliant start to this new EMP disaster series! I really liked the idea, storyline & characters! A really great read but it does have a little angst! Good levels of excitement, I was completely absorbed in the story & ended up finishing it too quickly! I can't wait to see where the next book goes! I do recommend for all that love this genre!

I think ill get up and prep right now

Great emp book. As always, TL Payne spins a great story. A married couple take a little getaway not thinking of anything more than a good time. They left the two kids with the husband's elderly parents. As preparing to return home an employee hits and shtf. The prep to get to their family will keep you entertained.

Chilling

Book pretty much describes what would happen after an EMP strike. What is chilling is how rare human kindness becomes after society collapses. To think this is actually a possibility with all the bad actors that exist on this earth. I get the reasoning behind the things preppers do!

Different take on an apocalyptic thriller

Entertaining read full of adventure, fear, despair, and perseverance. I liked the added aspect of Tank the dog and how the author worked two different story lines throughout the book. The idea of an EMP wiping out the world as we know it is scary and I think the author did a good job with that!

great idea, not so great editing

The book reads fine for the first 75%.
Then it starts to jump around with missing scenes ie: how did Shayne find them in the office/room at the baseball stadium? And many others.
Finally it finishes off rushed, like there was some dead line to meet and forgo continuity.

Great start.

There were some references to earlier actions that weren't explained but otherwise a good read. It did end in a cliffhanger but that seems to be the way most of these series are. Just be prepared to get the next book if you want to know what happens next.

A bit done there ,done that emp story with nothing new to say.

It's an ok story , a bit naive and not a new premise , a bit sickening with the constant lovey dovey
between the 2 main characters .

Great Story

This was a really well told story. The characters are engaging and the story really pulls you in. It needs a little editing as there are multiple points where a word is obviously missing, but the story is very well done.

Slow, slow, slow! This could have been good, but 1/3 of the way into it, and they're still preparing to leave.
If this hadn't been planned as a series, maybe it would've been interesting, as the main characters were good.

What chaos

Well this book certainly got my heart racing at times. It seems unreal what some people would do at times like this, but the way the author writes, you can really imagine it happening, really good start to the series, great read.
