Lovely, well-illustrated book for young kids

I loved this counting book. It covers numbers one to eleven with the introduction of new sea creatures on each page, such as octopus, dolphins and clownfish.

The illustrations are colourful and engaging. Even the ‘scary’ sea creatures such as sharks look friendly, which is good for this age group.

Each page rhymes and often has alliteration, for example, “The seahorses stay in sight as 3 clownfish dart with delight.” This type of sentence structure would definitely engage this age group, and the fact that each creature is mentioned twice is also something that works well for the target audience.

Some of the words are quite complex, for example, skedaddling, a-paddling, but in this context, where an adult would read the story to a child, I think that’s great; the kids will learn new words and the words are fun words to learn too.

This book would also be valuable to an early years’ teacher. There are so many activities they could do with the kids around the sea creatures and numeracy. If they had the sea as a topic for the term, this book would work very well.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for the age group. It’s a lovely read.

The cover of Peep in the Deep Sea Creature Counting Book by R. M. Smith charmed me and I had to see if the story was as adorable. In the first image, a boy sleeps in a bed. The narrative immediately prepares the reader that this is a dream and stirs one’s curiosity. What is under the sea?
From there, the reader is transported underwater and the first sea creature is introduced, one goby. Since we had an aquarium when I was a tot, the word was familiar to me. However, the idea of a parent or grandparent incorporating a trip to an aquarium, so the child could see how diverse gobies are tickles me. And so begins a rhyming journey to an increasingly larger collection of sea denizens.
Up to number five, the previous amount can be seen alongside the next. For example, the four dolphins are pictured next to the five swordfish. The child can easily see the difference. This exposes children not only to counting, but to adding.
The rhyming is clever and gives the reader the opportunity to discuss words new to the child. In fact, the book presents many learning moments.
I loved this book. It would make a perfect gift for any little one.

Peep in the Deep by R. M. Smith is a fantastic way to teach youngnones about math. I have taken a look before online, in bookstores, and book fairs and it is usually the same concept, such as using shapes and "counters" to teach kids about counting and math. However this one is so different, and actually very fun!

You show your children, or children you are teaching at school different sea creatures as well. This is so creative and all eyes were on me when I took out this book. It really helps when they ask questions about the sea creatures, and what they eat, colors things like that. It gets them more motivated when they are interested in, not only the subject, but the material as well.

I think this book should be everywhere, homes, schools, fairs because the concept of it is smart and witty. Gains interest for all children, and also gains the interest of the adult...like me! Five stars for everything for this book, I will be looking at more from the author! Book cover is beautiful too! Kudos!

This is a really cute book geared for very young ones (toddlers, babies, and maybe slightly older) to help engage them in counting and help start the learning process. What stands out the most is the artwork, illustrated by the author R.M. Smith. I'm not too familiar with art styles, but it the book looks hand drawn and has the look of crayon, which is a really nice aesthetic. I think young ones will love the cute sea creatures, vibrant colors, and easy to follow words.

While it's a short one, it does everything it promises too, counting up to 11. This is a book that will get plenty of use, especially if your young one likes sea creatures and fish, or the ocean. I read this one on a Kindle and computer, which looked best in color, but I imagine the print version would look even better. The relaxing colors make it a good book to read at night, but also before naps in the day too.

Julia Donaldson, ever the genius at creating a playful picture book, invites readers to count babies of various animals. The illustrations crafted by Sharon King-Chai add luminous color and flaps and holes to peek through that increase the stunning look and playfulness of the book. A wonderful counting picture book for preschoolers.

I love the art style

This book is extremely well illustrated and the Sea creatures are easy to see and count. Overall it's a great first counting book for young children as it only goes to 11, but that doesn't take any value away from the book in my eyes.

Overall I'd gladly recommend this book to any parent that has a kid that's a fan of sea life and that's learning to count

Great Little Story

This is a short counting story. I love reading rhyming stories to littles, because it teaches anticipation of sounds. The illustrations in this book were amazing, making the short story last with discussions about the amazing sea creatures. Great for toddlers and prek.

I just received this as a free giveaway through Goodreads First Reads.

The book, Peep in the Deep is intended to be an introduction to numbers and sea creatures. It does achieve it's goal as it is a good basic book to introduce children to counting 1-10. However, I felt that it missed the opportunity to be more than a basic book.

The illustrations were very colorful and eye catching. They were a nice blend between realism and illustration. I liked how up to number 5, the previous number of sea animals also appeared on the left hand side of the new number's illustration (ex. the four dolphin are looking back at the 5 swordfish). This would allow for a review of the number, a compare/contrast of the two numbers or two animals, etc. I would have liked to see this pattern continue throughout the book. I also liked the way that he illustrated each consecutive number with the creatures for that number spreading ever farther to the left. What a great visual for the idea of more than/less than.

The premise of the story was cute, with the idea of it being a dream. I liked how the last page provided a different animal, bird rather than fish, so you could have the children guess about what would be different about the next dream.

However, I found that some of the vocabulary was a little bit difficult for the intended age group, and would have preferred a more basic/standard rhyme scheme to allow for extended use of the book in other teachable areas.

Again, overall, it is a nice book to introduce children to both numbers and sea animals. I would definitely provide this for my students to use independently, but would probably not use it as a teacher resource.

I just won the children's book Peep in the Deep (Sea Creature Counting Book) written by R.M. Smith. This is a small paperback book in which a child falls asleep and dreams of creatures in the deep. He counts up to eleven different sea creatures. It begins with one Goby and finishes with 11 Whales. The story features colorful pictures and large print for a child to follow along too. I like how vivid the pictures are and how easy it is for my son to follow along. He loved the pictures of the Angel Fish and the Octopuses. I enjoyed that it taught my son counting and also names of sea creatures. I will definitely be recommending this book to all my friends with children.

I WON THIS BOOK FROM GOODREADS FIRST READS GIVE AWAYS.

The pictures really grab a child's attention. My son immediately wanted to look at the illustrations and name the different animals. When I began reading it to him he liked that it wasn't oh look one puppy two cats, ect ect. Instead it flowed from one number to the next by way of action which entertained my son. As a person who thinks reading should be fun and not just a bore fest, I thought the book was well done and it got a three year old's seal of approval. It was a very pleasant reading experience for us as a mother and son. I recommend this book for toddlers up to preschoolers.

What a fun under sea adventure! This is a book that will be easy for beginning readers to read, and one younger children will enjoy having read to them. Kids will enjoy counting the various groups of under sea creatures and enjoy the easy to read, rhyming words that make up this story. The illustrations are eye catching and bright and the story itself is quick, educational and engaging for younger children. It's a great read for any personal, school or classroom library.

Goodreads first read really cute book with amazing illustrations although I have to admit I don't remember any counting books I ever read as a kid going yo 11. Passed this on to a former student employee who is now a kindergarten teacher to use in her classroom library
