History of Christianity: An Enthralling Overview of the Most Important Events that Shaped the Christian Church

Rate this book
It is the largest faith in the world, spans the globe, and stretches back in time nearly two thousand years. We are, of course, talking about Christianity.

Today, the dominance of the Christian faith appears to be a readily accepted fact. But back when it first rose to prominence, for most outside observers, such an idea would have seemed highly unlikely.

From its inception, Christianity was persecuted and hounded. Christians often paid a high price for their faith. They met underground and even in graveyards. They were misunderstood, and their message to outsiders seemed hopelessly strange and muddled. Back then, no one could have imagined that this “cult,” which often met in secret, small groups, would one day have huge churches and an even larger global presence.

Yet, despite the odds, Christianity proved to be unstoppable. How did such a thing happen? From the perspective of a believer, the answer to that question is quite the divine hand of God was at work. But even if one does not subscribe to the Christian faith, there are certain aspects of Christianity that stand out and can be used as mile-markers as to how and why Christianity came to take such a prominent place in world history.

This book takes a look at the full history of Christianity, from its earliest days as a persecuted sect to its acceptance and formalization at the Council of Nicaea to the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, and the subsequent modern age.

In this book, you will learn about the The origins of Christianity and why people flocked to the religionThe life and ministry of JesusThe first Christian disciplesThe early Christian ChurchThe Council of Nicaea and the momentous impact it had on Christian historyChristianity during the Middle AgesThe effect of the CrusadesThe earth-shattering ReformationAnd a whole lot more!

Sporatic and hard to follow

For me, Wellman's writing style left a lot to be desired. I found the book to be sporatic and scattered in concepts, dates, and themes. It was riddled with what I'd refer to as historical rabbit trails, which he tries bring you back from with, "At any rate..."

Several important historical perspectives and concepts were omitted, or could have been expanded on. Most notable for me were several references to the early church's selection of canonical scriptures, with no mention whatsoever of apocryphal texts. Why the Gospel of Matthew was deemed canonical, while the Gospel of Judas was made apocryphal was left unsaid. He glossed over Gnosticism in a single paragraph. It left me the distinct impression of being guided towards a biased perspective rather than given historical information.

An introductory work to basic history of Christianity. Overall, an interesting and relatively unbiased compilation of some of the most important themes and events of Christian-based history, although one or two chapters seem very brief or out of place in the flow of the book. Still quite enjoyable and informative and a good place to start exploring deeper into the subject

Christianity

This is a short history of Christianity. The book details the beginning of the faith in Jerusalem, the Council of Nicea, The Protestant Reformation, The Middle Ages and how Christianity developed in different countries. The book talks about Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Wesley as well as other thinkers. The book was well edited and especially informative. I learned a lot more about Christianity that I did not know before and really enjoyed the book.

An interesting review but rather incomplete. There was no mention of the large number of "gospels" that didn't make into the bible. There was no discussion of the moulding of Christian rites to various pagan traditions such as the positioning of Christmas at the winter solstice festival period etc.
While there was a slight inevitable pro-christian bias, the review was refreshingly objective overall.

Great Read

Nicely done, very concise, I was thinking I may be getting a ponderous tome, I was mistaken, recommend it to anyone looking for a good historical read

for the length of the book (or rather how short it was) it contained a suprising amount of information and background that tied different events together
