The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.

His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.

Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.

He also has works published under his real name.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was certainly an adventure. It was a lot of odd events that seemed to be difficult to follow, not to mention the language written in the time period Lewis Carroll released this book in. I felt like I was reading a poem that was hard to translate and eventually became a jumble of words I couldn’t understand thoroughly. I understand the appeal it was meant to have when it was first written but I couldn’t get myself to go down the rabbit hole myself… At least I can say that I read it.

I've read so many different versions of AIW, but somehow this is my first time reading the original. I have had extremely vivid dreams since I was a child, and that's exactly what this reminds me of. Rambling, nonsensical and yet somehow all strung together in one long story that seems to make sense at the time 😅. I enjoyed the extra notes this edition has at the end, which discuss more about Lewis Carroll and how these stories came to be.

I have read lots if. response of Alice in Wonderland, including Marissa Meyers: Heartless, while reading the original tale I realized all the connections to Heartless, like when the mad hatter asks Alice "When is a raven like a writing desk?" which is what Jes, from Heartless also asked, having now read the original I have a fresh outlook on all the other spinoffs, and retellings that I love so much, that they have much-muchness(iykyk)

I was never very attached to this story as a kid. I thought reading the book might endear me more to the characters or plot. It did not.

This was a re-read too, I collect copies of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and I managed to pick up a Puffin copy from a charity shop for 50p which I planned to annotate but ended up just marking pages with tab labels so I didn’t damage the book. This copy had the original illustrations which I love. I haven’t read it in a few years and now I am in my 40s I understand why I love it so much. Alice takes no crap from anyone and she tells people what she thinks. She isn’t scared to call out bullshit but at the same time she is curious. She might be a little annoying at times but so can everyone. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read this book, it is very different from the Disney movie. Most copies also contain Through the Looking Glass but this copy hasn’t for some reason. That will be my next read. I love The Jabberwocky!
