The Phantom Stallion's new foal is ready to be born, and River Bend Ranch's own Dark Sunshine is the mother. Samantha couldn't be more excited, and she's sure she can handle the new baby while everyone is gone on the annual cattle drive.

I really enjoyed this one! Hearing about Samantha helping Dark Sunshine and the filly, Tempest, was so exciting and cute. I think I squealed multiple times, learning about this little horse. There was not as much action in this book as in a few of the other books in the series, since most of the neighbors were on the cattle drive, but I still had trouble putting it down. One of my real questions is, when is somebody gonna stop Rachel Slocum from consistently hurting people and making their life harder? Like, seriously? This girl is almost dangerous she's so selfish and bratty. Anyways, I'm also glad that Jake made it into this book despite the circumstances. I mean, I was worried that since he was on the cattle drive, he wasn't gonna show up for the rest of the book. But I was wrong and my, how glad I am! lol I love Jake. Anyways, this is a good book, perfect for horse-lovers, western adventure stories, and ages 10+
This is the twelfth book in the Phantom Stallion series. (Only one more until I start reading the books I didn't get to read as a kid!!!) To be honest, I didn't have much memory of this one. I remembered that the Phantom fathered a foal and the foal was born at some point, but that was about it. In this book, Sam has a birthday and in a coming-of-age moment, she gets to stay home alone in order to help the mare Dark Sunshine birth the Phantom's foal while everyone else is off on a cattle drive. I really liked how Sam stepped up in this one and how one of her neighbors was there to help out when she needed it. Not everything went smoothly, but Sam figured it out and problem solved. I also loved that she named the baby Tempest, like "tempest in a tea pot". So perfect for feisty little filly.❤️
I'm looking forward to my last reread in this series before I get to read the rest of it for the very first time!
Content Advisory:
I'm having to think hard here, because there was barely anything worth mentioning. Sam and Jake have their usual brother/sister-like relationship where they sometimes argue a little and Jake calls Sam "brat." (He calls her this in nearly every book.) Sam bangs up her knee and tears one leg on her jeans when an escaping horse knocks her down. Some blood and pain are described, but it's not a serious injury.
Yeah, I know I said in my review for the last book that I was done with this series, but idiot me had to read about Dark Sunshine's foal, and the Slocum Appaloosa mare Hotspot foaling.
There was a whole huge build-up of a natural disaster about to happen, but nothing did. Well, a whole lot of nothing.
The foals were born. Whee. We waited 11 books for this crap?
I'm gonna go crazy if I read that Popcorn is an albino
One.
More.
DAMN.
Time.
There is no such thing as an albino horse. A horse may appear white ... but it ain't an albino. All albino foals die withing a few days of being born because albinism always comes with a malformed digestive tract. This has been known for decades. Farley should've gotten off her high horse about Mustang rights and actually learned something about horses.
One good thing about the series is that all of the characters aged. Samantha turns 14 in this book. Compare this to series like Animal Ark or the Saddle Club, where the main characters never age. That REALLY gets annoying.
The image of the foal on the cover looks suspiciously like the Breyer model of the Classic Andalusian foal.
If you're thinking of reading this series out of order, don't. You really need to read this in order in order to understand what's going on. If you can't, at least try to read one of the first three books before this one, preferably Dark Sunshine.
This is currently up on The Open Library, but you have to do a specific search to find it. Use "rain dance terri farley". Don't just enter "phantom stallion" or "terri farley". That will get you nowhere fast.

If it is a .5 star I round up
4 Stars
This was one of my favorite series from my childhood books 11-24 I did not have the pleasure of reading them during childhood I am reading them now.
The Phantom Stallion's new foal is ready to be born, and River Bend Ranch's own Dark Sunshine is the mother. Samantha couldn't be more excited, and she's sure she can handle the new baby while everyone is gone on the annual cattle drive.
But when a dangerous thunderstorm hits the ranch, Sam realizes that maybe she can't do it all alone especially when the Phantom arrives, and seems to want to take his new filly back to the wild.
I liked this book, but I didn't find it especially eventful despite the... well, the big event that the plot centers around. The new filly is a fun and charming character, and it was nice to see Sam take on the responsibility of her. Nothing particularly wrong or anything, this book didn't feel like a progression of any characters and probably could have taken place any time after Dark Sunshine's book. Still, I liked the interactions we get of Ryan and Sam, I'd love for them to become proper friends.
All about Dark Sunshine's filly with the Phantom, whom Sam names Tempest. She's adorable! I love her dearly already. It's also cool how Sam handles the birth and the first few days of Tempest's life largely independently. Many things can go wrong, but she dealt with everything so maturely.
Sams horse Dark Sunshine is having a filly. The phantom is take the filly. While Dark Sunshine is having the filly the phone line catches on fire and the phone goes dead, if somthing happens to Sam she has no way of getting help.
