*She thought it was over.*

Kara believed she was free.

Free to erase the brand left on her heart by the three men who thought they could own her. But when an enemy from her past reappears in her present, she’s forced to reckon with who she was—and who she’s become. The dark fire lit inside her by the men she left behind may be Kara’s only weapon against a predator intent on breaking her.

*They’ve only just begun.*

Conor, Micah, and Luke’s entire worldview has been shattered—by the woman they swore they’d never let go. After Kara’s betrayal, the ex-Navy SEALs decide they don’t believe in second chances…even for her. And no one touches what belongs to them and lives.

Lose Me in the Shadows is the second book in the Bad Heroes trilogy, a dark Navy SEAL second chance romance series. Although book two ends in a cliffhanger, the trilogy will end in an HEA. Such good writing, such an annoying heroine.

We dive straight back in where the cliffhanger in book one left off, with Kara having just shot one of her lovers. Unfortunately, I found the ending the weakest part of that book, which meant that the beginning chapters are also the weakest part of this book. Kara's frustrating stubbornness and illogicality were put on full display. She's furious she was manipulated by Luke, conveniently forgetting all the times she tried to manipulate him, and she's desperate for a 'freedom' she already acknowledged pales in comparison to being with them. Kara's head was not a restful place to be.

Fortunately, the plot progresses quickly. She's kidnapped from her hotel room and the guys bust in to save the day, reuniting them without much wasted time. Incidentally, Kara's best friend Lola (?) attains cardboard cut-out status here, which is weird considering how well-developed the main characters are. As soon as Kara phones Lola, she (no questions asked) books her a hotel room to stay in and then pretty much disappears from the scene. How does Kara not spare her supposed best friend a single thought for the rest of the book? She never considers getting in contact with her, which is weird considering she was literally kidnapped from the room Lola had booked for her, and Lola is presumably somewhat concerned about that...

Anyway, while the plot in general is fairly eyeroll-worthy, the characterisation is superb. Kara may be annoying, but for the most part she's pleasingly well-rounded. The heroes' characterisation is brilliant. It's great that we get to see more of their backstory and motivations, and this type of M/M is just absolutely perfect - present, but the focus is definitely on Kara.

The technical writing is also great, although there were a few typos and continuity errors, e.g. Kara having green eyes one moment and brown the next.

Overall - Brenner is definitely a talented author and I'll be reading the sequel.

OH. MY. GOD.

The ending DESTROYED me. I knew this book would end in a cliffhanger but 😭 WHAT.

Jo, you absolute genius. I could not put this book down. The writing is bloody perfection. It gripped my feelings and broke my heart 🥹💕 Yes it's THAT amazing. I fell in love with these characters in the first book and fell more in love with every page in Lose Me In The Shadows. I fell in love with their flaws, toxicities, and their love for one another. I kid you not, the dirty talking and the "touch her and die" was off the charts. The spice! FIWOWOKDDNDK. Perfection.

If you haven't read the first book, You Can Follow Me, I recommend it! Highly! It's amazing if you're looking to read dark romance and heart-wrenching angst.

I feel like with the second book we got to see these four connect a little more but the chemistry is still just not there for me. I feel like RH books need to be a longer series so you can form those bonds and this series just isn’t doing that.
I hated that as soon as Kara was rescued she was immediately ready to get with the guys. Like no! What you went through (I don’t want to spoil it for anyone) you shouldn’t want to do that for a long time. But no, she was ready to go right away. I did like the captivity aspect of the book, and how it really draws their worlds together. I will say though that Jo sure does know how to write amazing cliffhangers. But I think I’m done with this series.

I’m unsure why I do this to myself, I didn’t really care for the first book but here I am. I’m not sure what it is but I just don’t think these books are for me, they’re not holding my attention and they’re super repetitive. I’m unsure how such a short book seemed so long 🤷🏻‍♀️ Side note: Kara is really annoying.

The first book ended in a cliffhanger and I felt like I was at commit-level and wanted to see where this story was going to go next while at the same time not caring all that much?

I find the FMC frustrating and I don’t love the third person narration style. I don’t really know how I feel about the characters in this series but each character is frustrating in their own way.. you do get to see some good qualities in the men and you do kind of root for them. It seems like Kara is starting to acknowledge her feelings but then goes back a step literally every chapter only to repeat this for two full books so far. I’m sure it is confusing for her to have feelings for but also resent some of the actions of the men but it does get old pretty quickly constantly having her start to see that she does have feelings for the three men to then go back to denying her feelings and lashing out.

I will probably finish the series but not because I love it 🤷🏼‍♀️ just because at this point I have powered through two books already..

“You wanted power? I’d argue you’ve always had it with us. You had the power to throw our lives completely upside down, make us want you so badly we almost destroyed our relationships with each other. You were the one thing we tried to plan for, but you were always a step ahead of us. But if that’s not enough, then we’re giving you all the power. It’s yours now, explicitly.”
.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Lose me in the Shadows by Jo Brenner and I’m so happy I did. After the crazy cliffhanger of the first book, I was dying to get my hands on the second. This did not disappoint. Kara and her men are still figuring out their dynamic and how to be together after everything they’ve been through. I’m trying not to spoil too much but this was ride and a half. They’re polycule trying communicate effectively to keep each other alive and out of their enemies hands. AND THEN ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER! Jo really knows how to write them and have you wanting to ram her front door down. I will definitely be trying to get an ARC of the third one when she announces it.

3,5✨

“I don’t know how I can give you up. Even if you hate me. I’d rather spend the rest of my life with you, knowing you hate me, than a lifetime without you.”

This sequel begins right where the first ended. But it quickly takes a turn I definitely hadn’t expected. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book with twist after twist and so many secrets and reveals that I genuinely didn’t know what would happen next. And I LOVED it.

I loved meeting Kara and the guys in the first book, but this one dove into their history a little more, especially the connection between her and Luke. It’s hard to choose a favorite out of this trio, but if I *had* to pick, Luke was probably my favorite. and this book didn’t make me feel any different.

This one is a bit darker than the first one, so check the triggers if you need to, but I couldn’t look away. I had a hunch that there was something bigger going on with Kara’s ex, but I hadn’t expected it to be like this.

Overall: I loved this. It was written well, the pacing was great, still love the characters and I was definitely hooked. If you’re looking for a dark why choose romance with a few ex-navy seals, with a bit of kidnapping, dub con, tons of chemistry and a story that will have you invested from start to finish - you should definitely check this out. both book one and two ended on cliffhangers, and they’re painful. but they’re 100% worth the read. (also, if you're a fan of Eva Ashwood you should be jumping on this series + author immediately)

A rare DNF for me. The things that annoyed me in the first book were still here and I couldn’t be bothered pushing through. If just one of the characters had have mattered to me maybe I might have. I really wish we as readers got to see and understand why these three men are so freaking obsessed with this one woman.

Lose Me in the Shadows was a fantastic sequel! I could not wait for this book after that incredible cliffhanger from the last book, and I was not disappointed. These characters had a lot to deal with after the ending of the last book and things to confront with each other, but I loved the way they grew through that and together. I enjoyed the way their relationship grew along with them as individual people.

The tension and action in this book was also top notch! Brenner hooks me not only with the romance plot, but also the non-romance plot. Overall, I love this series so much (cliffhangers and all), and can’t wait for the next book!

Lose Me in the Shadows is the second book in the Bad Heroes series and cannot be read as a standalone. It picks up right where You Can Follow Me left off.

This is a dark romance so make sure to check the trigger warnings, though if you read the first book, you should know what to expect.

I was so anxious to see what happened after that huge cliffhanger in book one. This book has the same elements as the first book with Kara, a headstrong FMC, and the three MMCs: Luke, Conor, and Micah.

They are all still obsessed with her and fiercely protective. Some of the questions I had in book one were answered, and they open up more to Kara about their past. They were also a lot less cruel toward her than they were in You Can Follow Me.

This book still brought all the action and suspense with a great storyline. Of course, things aren’t so easy because when they think they’re safe…things go horribly wrong. The story ends on a major cliffhanger AGAIN! I need the next book because I need to know what happens next.

Book 2 gloriously picks up where Book 1 ends. I enjoyed trying to figure out the angles and plot while Brenner pulled me deeper into Luke, Conor, Kara and Micah's tangled web. This is a "who done it and why" type mystery and a twisted, dark love story, wrapped up into one wild ride. If it's an emotion I felt it reading this book. Can't wait for book 3.

Gave up at 56% every time I thought it was coming around to a resolution something else convoluted took place. The POV remained hard to follow and the characters were are ridiculously frustrating. I thought it showed promise but not enough for me to push through. I don’t DNF books so I had to share a review.

this one is better than the last because there’s some character development, but everyone is still annoying. kara does that thing that a lot of fmcs do, which is anytime that literally anything happens, she’s like “i need you, make me feel better, blah blah.”

and while i can get behind the concept of sex as distraction, that works like…once. and it happens multiple times just in this book. and again, it’s fine? but it’s incredibly annoying because it always just feels like a choice these characters make in lieu of actually considering/articulating their feelings and circumstances. which is, again, fine to do once. but these books are basically completely about 4 people who literally cannot speak to each other, eventually it stops being sexy and starts to feel incredibly juvenile.

these characters are not 16. it’s not cute or charming that kara and her guys could have a successful relationship if they all went to therapy and learned how to talk to each other. and again, kara is portrayed as this “strong, take-no-shit” kind of character, but working so hard to make her “strong” just ends up with her being extremely emotionally weak and stunted.

and my biggest pet peeve with this book is…where the hell is lola? it’s like we were supposed to just forget about her completely?? kara doesn’t seem to have even thought about her since she got the room at the motel, and at this point, shouldn’t kara be asking about lola and her safety?? if people are looking for kara, wouldn’t they come after lola? shouldn’t they know that?

the sex is good, the guys are hot, some of this is really fun. but some of it?? makes no sense and also makes you continue hating all of the characters.

First of all a big thank you to Jo for providing me with an ARC of her upcoming release.

Second of all what the actual f.

Jo. You better hide.

This book is one of my most anticipated releases of 2023. If you haven't read the first one, do it. It was one of my favourite reads and so underrated.

Well, I had expectations and Jo blew them. Immensely. Not as much as Kara blows, but you get the gist.

Was this dark? Most certainly. Darker than the first book? I'd say no, but that's my opinion. They definitely differ in darkness, but on different fronts. There's more blood here, more death. While in the first book the darker parts were between them. Rhe mind games are not as front and center as they were in the previous book, which, for me, is a welcome relief.

The guys are just as dirty, just as filthy as we're used from them by now. But they did change. They probably won't apologize for 'rehoming' Kara, but they'll do anything and I mean absolutely anything to make sure she knows she's loved, cared for and important in their lives.

"Sweetheart, you gave us a home."

I can't wait for the next book. I'm fuming at the ending, but I honestly didn't expect anything less from Jo. Let that be your warning.

I've fallen in love with Jo's writing style and in multiple occasions I realized how talented she is. Jo has an amazing way with words and she continues to blow my mind.

We need to keep an eye on her, she's gonna do great things. Trust me.

This book had a lot more going on than the first one. I did enjoy that things between everyone did change, and we did get to a point where they started to talk and admit what they are feeling. If that hadn't happened, no way would anything have worked with them long-term.

That being said, for most of this book, it still had the feeling like they were gaslighting her. They kept telling her that she wasn't happy in her old life, and they are what she needs. They did this even after she admitted she felt like nothing to them. Hopefully things get even better with them, but nothing really feels great between them.

I'm not feeling why they are so obsessed with her. I mean, Micah was with her for only one night, and he suddenly wants to kidnap her and keep her forever? Conor got 2 days. At least Luke got a month, but it just feels weird to me. How do you have issues admitting you love someone, when you were fully ready to drug and kidnap them, keeping them forever? Then, you say it isn't just sex.... so what is it, then? Duh!

I do want to see the conclusion of their story. There does seem to me a lot of sex, even when there shouldn't be. I am at a point where I just lightly skim over it to continue the story. Overall, I am enjoying it more than just the last book, but this final book will determine if I like it overall.

Jo Brenner has truly outdone herself once again and delivered another truly phenomenal addition to her Bad Hero’s Series ) I read a ton of Dark Romances by so many very talented authors . But sometimes you just come across a book / series that has the ability to captivate you in a way that doesn’t always happen . Well Jo’s Bad Hero’s Series did just that . Not to mention all the crazy emotions I felt while reading. There were moments I found myself utterly speechless, moments I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest and breaking all at the same time , moments I literally wanted to throw my tablet right across the room . But one thing never wavered and that’s the fact that I was glued to the edge my my seat from start to finish . Lose Me In The Shadows is a love story that’s dark and raw and gritty and extremely emotional, it’s filled with suspense, angst , non stop action , off that charts chemistry, secrets , love , passion , twists and turns, phenomenal world building, characters that are so beautifully flawed you simply cannot stop yourself from becoming 100% invested . It’s a Why Choose/ RH / and Dark Romance that is so freaking awesome word’s honestly cannot due it justice .

Wow that cliffhanger was brutal. I also appreciate that from the cliffhanger in book one we jump into book two, and the suspense doesn't stop there. Kara is in a HEAP of trouble and I'm not just talking about the 3 guys she left behind. The guys ugh, they're so freaking heartbroken after she leaves them, how could they cope with the loss? Jo does an amazing job, I was not happy with any of the characters but as the reader we know... well we can SEE what is going on, kind of. But not really? I digress, Conor, Micah, and Luke really got their act together once they realized how much Kara was in danger, even after she left them. There's totally a touch her and your life is forfeited kind of deal, and with their dynamic it 100% works.

Throughout the whole book, the dynamic is trying to piece itself back together. Apologies are said, but not said, Kara is realizing that soon, hard decisions will need to be made. And the guys, have been through a LOT, and need to also figure things out.

But what's brutal beyond anything else is that CLIFFHANGER, hollllly crap. It was bad. I am itching for book three, to see them with their HEA.

OMG!!!! Jo has done it again! YES YES YES!!!!

""You're ours," he growled. "And now everyone here will know...including you. You matter more than you could ever possibly know."" 🫠🫠*cue me melting and wishing he were talking to me*

I love how feisty Kara is with the men. She challenges them and does not back down from a fight.
Luke, Conor and Micah make me feel things I didn't think were possible. They are so dominant, protective and witty! I have fallen in love with the dynamics of this foursome. The smut is 🥵🥵🥵! I definitely suggest having some relief nearby.... 😉😉😉

This dramatic 2nd installation in the series, had me on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put it down! I cannot wait until Meet Me In The Dark (Bad Heroes 3) comes out and I finally get to see how the story ends. These cliffhangers are killing me. 😭😭😭😭

This book is hot! And dark! And I loved it. There’s a ton of character growth in this story while Kara vies for her own agency and the men fight her. We are privy to them navigating each other and their own demons. I love how, even though we don’t have answers, they start possibly working towards a common goal. We also get glimpses into the demons that are haunting them and the impact that has on the relationship.

Speaking of - this isn’t just why choose centered around the FMC, it’s a full polycule - everyone loves (??) everyone and no one has to choose. It makes for some VERY spicy scenes but also some BIG tensions.

Finally, I love the strong Jewish FMC and that one of the men is Jewish. Even more, while they share the umbrella of Jewish their experiences and relationship to Judaism is different and I feel like that’s such a common Jewish theme. I had some great conversations with Jo about this and I cannot wait to see what she’s bringing in the next book (and maybe the next series…)

Let me start by saying this book i have been looking forward to forever!!

Ok so we start the book straight in where book one left off, there is chaos from the get go but only because of the fallout from the first one!

Kara is on the move, she thinks she has gained her freedom but has she truly? And what did it cost her?
We travel with her in this book as she has a few moments of self discovery and admits things to herself and the seals that she never thought she would do. I love her dialogue she is fire and ice and she uses both with deadly consequences.

Of the seals one was left bleeding on the floor after being shot so we pick up from there to see if he can survive.
The other two are all over the place, they are confused, hurt, angry and so many more emotions that they struggle with and we watch them get all there ducks in a row and be who they need to be for the woman they love.

Now this book is not the last one, there will be another, so there is a HUGE cliffhanger, as expected by the lovely Jo Brenner, but tho story is absolutely worth a read now!!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the second book in the Bad Heroes Series. You will need to read You Can Follow Me first or you will be lost reading this book. This book picks up where we left off in You Can Follow Me. Conor, and Micah have been shattered by the betrayal they suffered at the hands of Kara. She is the one person in the world they thought would never betray them and they do not believe in second chances. However her past is coming back for her in the form of an enemy she thought she would never see again. He is a predator determined to break her. When the guys find out what is going on, no matter what has happened in the past they make the decision and will stop at nothing to get her back. Buckle up this is one wild ride that will have you on the edge of your seat most of the time while you are reading. I loved every single second of this book. You do not want to miss it. Now I can't wait to see what happens and need Meet Me In The Dark in my hot little hands like yesterday.

Lose Me in the Shadows by Jo Brenner is a fervent continuation of the Bad Heroes series. While the first book, You Can Follow Me, was a whirlwind of passion and desire, this second installment delves deeper into the characters and their relationships.

The story takes a slightly slower pace, allowing for more character development and world-building. We see Kara, our fierce and independent heroine, navigate trauma and emerge stronger than ever. The individual relationships within the polycule are explored in greater detail, providing a more intimate and nuanced look at the dynamics between the characters.

The vulnerability displayed by the male characters is refreshing and adds depth to their personalities endearing them to me even more. Their motivations and justifications become clearer. I was left shook by the cliffhanger ending and have to jump into the third book right away.

If you enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed with Lose Me in the Shadows. It's a thrilling and emotionally charged read that will leave you wanting more.

⭐️4/5
🌶️4/5

**Warning: This contains spoilers for book 1, You Can Follow Me. And for this book.**

This book is a reconciling of everything that happens in book 1.

Kara has run from the men after shooting Luke. Unfortunately for her, she's kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend within hours of escaping. Don't worry. The men get her back and take her to a safe place. Thus starts the plot of them working together to try and take down Kara's ex.

What? Did you think a book with 4 chili peppers was going to have a more complex overall plot? Nope. That isn't to say stuff doesn't happen. There's action. There's adventure. There's a lot of violence. And, as Jo Brenner warns us in the author's note, there's a cliffhanger.

In this book, the bulk of the work is emotional between the group. Kara has to figure out what she wants. Does she want the men? If so, how can she feel safe and cared for? Will the men be able to treat her as an equal? Can everyone get over the whole kidnapping, shooting Luke, running away, big feelings of it all.

Truthfully, this book made sense to me. I understood everyone's motivations. I understood why there were miscommunications. I could see the potholes in the plans and the compromises they needed to make. While this is a dark romance, there's not a lot of darkness amongst the group. I think it would be a good starter dark romance book. If you can handle the darker themes, keep going.

I'm certainly going to keep going with this series.

3.5 stars rounded up! RH or Why Choose is not really my jam but I was drawn to the dark elements of this one, especially since the heroes are military!

I’ll keep this a bit vague as it’s one that should be experienced and say that overall I was entertained. I wanted to know what was going to happen! I didn’t really buy into the chemistry between the characters since from the first book it felt a bit rushed for me, still the whole captive aspect was thoroughly intriguing!

In this second book, Kara has escaped her three complicated captors and feels like she can move forward but of course things don’t work out so easily and her past comes back to haunt her.

I enjoyed the elements of suspense in this and although I wasn’t always sure how I felt about Kara, I was still rooting for her along the way.

Definitely looking forward to reading more from Jo!

I didn’t expect that 😳

This book picks up perfectly from where You Can Follow Me ended. I didn’t expect the results from that cliffhanger. I had several different ideas, but was still surprised.

The events that unfolded throughout the rest of the book - WOW. Lots of twists. And we are left with another cliffhanger.

We are treated to more classic Conor, Micah, and Luke behavior. But there are some more deep emotional moments too. Kara goes through even more darkness in this book and has some pretty bada$$ moments. Their relationship is still complicated, complex, and they are learning. There are more external strains on their dynamic.

It’s an emotional, action packed, spicy, and dark ride.

⚠️If you haven’t read You Can Follow Me be sure to read that book first. Also be sure to check content and trigger warnings.⚠️

“My little murder baby”

I don’t know how many times an author needs to warn me that there’s a cliffhanger before I’ll believe it, cause I was still acting like I was being shot by that ending…. How RUDE!!!
Just kidding!! But seriously did not see that coming!
This book had everything I was hoping it would have after how the first one left off. All the things I was hoping to read, Jo freakin delivered🤗
This book was so exhilarating with all the dramatics, action, and steaminess that my heart desired.
I love all three of these men and I’d also be like Kara and never be able to pick one🫠

This book picks up right where the first one left off so be sure to read that one first; you won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a steamy, stalker, why choose, romance with lots of action and plot twists🔥🔥
