EN This series continues to be absolutely fantastic.

It’s fascinating to follow Reiji’s dilemmas and see the impact his decisions have on the lives of those around him.

It’s also curious how someone with such a seemingly miserable life can still attract so many other characters — but that’s exactly what makes this story so compelling.

After all, there's no hunger that doesn't turn into abundance… and no abundance that doesn't end in waste.

--

I tend to rate manga on a different scale compared to your typical book or novel— meaning ratings are determined by things like artistry, visual storytelling, the amount of insight gained through limited writing, how pressed I feel to continue (what is typically) a long ass series, and how quickly and efficiently the story moves along.

I say this to say, Boy’s Abyss Vol. 4 was the most unhinged and insightful volume yet— finally!

Chako gets to meets Nagi, confronting her about the suicide pact. This reveals Nagi’s underlying intentions— which may cause a rift between Rei and Nagi.

Gen, a childhood friend and simultaneous bully to Reiji…plans a meetup with him to reveal a shocking, years-long secret about Reiji’s mother.

Ms. Shiba is heinous and a master puppeteer. Calling Reiji’s mother in for an after school meeting prompts some weird, twisted scheme of manipulation regarding Rei’s future.

On the other hand, this draws out some complexities and further insight about his mother.

An emotional walk home after the meeting triggers Reiji’s mom (do they ever mention her name?) to say something completely unexpected to her son— revealing her inner darkness.

NOW HIS MOM IS ACTING ALL STRANGE AND STUFF.

PLEASE, NO.

IT’S GIVING BLOOD ON THE TRACKS ENERGY, UGHHHH.

Why do you want to sleep cuddled up with your seventeen year old son?! Why are you touching him and looking into his eyes like that?!

I can’t stop thinking about Sigmund Freud and the Oedipus complex now. I hope that’s not where we’re headed.

Chako is beginning to slip in her weird situationship with Reiji. It’s uncomfortable to witness and it’s pissing me off— why is she turning evil? I LOVED her, but clearly nobody is safe from the melancholy of this town.

And then, Ms. Shiba makes another surprise appearance. She’s teetering into stalker mode, people, I’m scared.

We’re left on a very uncomfortable cliffhanger— and I don’t have the next volume on my bookshelf.

I need to buy it immediately.

This manga is literally an angsty dumpster fire but I NEED IT, I NEED IT, I NEED IT.

In the 40 minutes it took me to read this I full on cried 2 times. I don't know why this series triggers me so much but there is something familiar about my feelings for it.

I love the fact that no one is sane and everyone hates everything about their lives in one way or another. It feels so real in an insane way. Everyone is so over the top yet it fits so naturally in my opinion. Idk I love this mess and I am so invested in seeing the carnage.

Finally, insight into why Rei wants to die. Still, show us his selfish brother, his grandma being more far gone, his mother anything but sweet. I just don’t see why he thinks she wouldn’t understand him going to college and what happened to working construction w/ his bullies? How much longer ‘til school is out if it’s been a month?

The clothes and lakeside are actually ugly this issue. Unkempt. The closeup of teeny lips are also a huge turn off. I don’t get if the implication is Nagi survived the lake jump in high school because the years don’t line up w/ her like 50y/o husband and her only being 20 and semi-famous. There’s not much point in Chako telling Rei she loves him when it’s obvious. I mean they just kissed, knew each other their whole lives and are planning to run away together.

So strange we never get the MC’s thoughts so he just seems to do things against his own interest. Like wouldn’t talking to Esemori upset the wife, especially if Rei assumes he’s dangerous in a scarier psychological way? Why does he think going with a sugar mama teacher is so much worse than a married on-the-edge artist who could draw media attention? Also, Chako isn’t ever as much of an outsider or uninvolved as she thinks… she has such up and down self esteem.

WTH, the popstress always said she wanted them to be a secret and, when Rei randomly invites his friend over in the middle of the night, she’s just like “Alright.” He’s so disrespectful to everyone. Of course it’s unintentional but people should get mad at him way more often, giving him a reason to actually hate his life when he’s on the cusp of freedom/adulthood anyway without all this soap opera.

WTF, who just asks a stranger about dying, and why doesn’t the stranger ask WTH they’re even there? I get playing polite and having to save lives, but how do they think it will go well? And why does it? Nobody acts like a real human. Things just get more twisted up w/ new things instead of getting answered.

Finally someone tries to talk some sense into Rei but I don’t get why it means people can’t leave the town. Why does the mom do what she does? Love or money? Why are they nonchalant about him walking in on her naked? The end makes me angrily sigh.

This is in my top favorite ongoing series of the year. The cliff hanger on this oneeeee. Cant wait for the next!! It’s obviously a twisted, depressive series. We learned this in the first two, but I’m excited to see what else the author has in store!
It’s very relatable to those who’ve grown up in small towns, even if it hasn’t happened to me 😂
I love this series!

I thought it was already twisted, but my god, it's now become an insanely tangled mess. It's so tangled it looks like a Rat King. Why am I still reading this? What the hell is it about this trainwreck that makes it so I can't look away?

This story just keeps getting more and more depressing. I want to continue to read it in hopes the kids can get out of the town but the author just keeps adding in more horrible adults and I’m losing hope for everyone involved in this story.

How does this keep getting even more convoluted?

Not a single drop in either story or art, particularly the plot keeps thickening each new chapter.
