Learning to read may be one of he most critical skills for a child to succeed. English is not an easy language and every help along the way is beneficial. In Phonics Storybook author Laurin Brainard had developed a tool which will help parents guide their small charges in this important area of development. As she says, "Whether your child is not yet reading or is just beginning to read, this book can help them develop reading skills."

The pictures are bright and entertaining. The stories, although simple because of the words, are not repetitive and will keep the young reader engaged. Along with the basic story Brainard interspersed some activities, words to trace over and a game, which will reinforce what is being taught and hopefully learned. This is great, because it is not just enough to to share the material and hope it sticks. The young reader needs something to keep them motivated and on task. These activities will do just that.

The stories and words get progressively harder as you make your way through the book. This will give your child a challenge to strive for.

During this time when schools are truncated this book is idea to supplement your young reader's education and help them make progress.

Upon request, the publisher, with no preset conditions, sent me a copy of the book to review.

This book includes short stories that focus on word families, such as words that end with -et or words that end with -ig. So the first two stories have a lot of words like "vet, pet, wet" and "pig, jig, dig, wig." At the end of each story there is an activity page where the child can trace words, complete a maze, do a word search, or circle the words from that word family.

Each story has bright illustrations with cute characters. I like how simple and fun the stories are as the characters go to the beach, take their dog to the park, ride in an airplane, and follow a treasure map. Some of the characters are human, and some are animals, but every story is adorable!

Most of the stories are only 6 sentences long. Just right for little readers to try a little at a time.

This book is perfect for K-5 and 1st grade readers! There is also a "Note to Parents" at the beginning of the book about how to help your child read and sound out the words.

If you are wanting your child to start reading, the best way to start is with phonics. Taking parts of common words and introducing them to the sounds that they make is a great way to develop those early reading skills.

Each story in the book has a word family-like “ig” and then builds activities to reinforce the sounds those letters make. First, there will be a story, then a page for tracing the letters, and then an activity using those letters. Each story will get progressively harder throughout the book.

With 25 stories and letter combinations, this is a great introduction for beginning readers to prepare them for similar activities in preschool or kindergarten. This book is an excellent resource for your home and an activity perfect for rainy days or quiet time.

This is a cute and colorful book that has all the elements of to encourage reading. The stories are laid out by word families and that means rhyming words like pet, vet, wet….

After each short story you have an “Activity Time” to say and trace the words that are in the story and another activity to find certain word combinations from the word family in words.

It won’t overwhelm kids with the stories are the activities. This is a great introduction book for beginner readers.

Practicing With Fun Books

Absolutely exciting beginning reader book. This set would be an excellent addition to your home library. The illustrations aide in the story telling. There are 26 little books. Each book has a word family. That means each book has words with the same letters in them plus a few sight words. An example from a book using the "ad" family.
Lad and Dad nab a cab.
Lad and Dad have fun at the Lab.
There are a couple sentence in between.
I highly recommend this book for the beginning readers ages 3-6 years old. Also any age learning to read no matter the age. These stories are fun.

After each story there are two activities, such as tracing, coloring, or locating a word that helps to reinforce what they've learned.

A fun, educational activity book for beginner readers.

This book is full of stories and activities that focus on teaching phonics to beginning readers. There are twenty-five stories, so the book is quite hefty, but you definitely get your money's worth. The illustrations are by Lizzy Doyle and are so fun. This will be a great resource for young children who need some extra practice with the early stages of reading. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
