An investigation goes from an easy trot to a full-on gallop into danger in the second Horse Rescue mystery, perfect for fans of Amanda Flower and Mollie Cox Bryan.
It’s business as usual when horse rescue owner Mallory Martin gets a call from Sheriff Grady Sullivan that a loose horse has been found in a popular hunting area. While trying to catch the horse, Mallory stumbles upon the body of his unfortunate rider, Hillspring’s star basketball coach, Douglas Griggs. All signs point to a tragic hunting accident.
Despite her better instincts, Mallory finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation when the coach’s widow begs her to look into the case. Mrs. Griggs believes the sheriff is ignoring any evidence that doesn’t point to an accident.
But Mallory’s troubles are only beginning. As she juggles a blossoming romance, tensions with her best friend Lanie, and responsibilities at the rescue, she discovers that Coach Griggs’s enemies had ample motive to murder him. And now, Mallory may be in the killer’s sights.
Amber Camp has lived in Northwest Arkansas for twenty years, working as an RN at a rural hospital in the area. She has a menagerie of animals that includes dogs, cats, horses, and what has been described as the Mule from Hell, which may or may not be a slight exaggeration. Writing has always been a focus in Amber's life, something she describes as "food for my soul." An avid reader since grade school, she enjoys multiple genres and is always looking for new authors to add to her favorites.
Horse rescue owner, Mallory Martin was settling a malnourished horse that she and her manager, Tanner, had picked up from a farm, when Sheriff Grady Sullivan called her to say there was a horse running wild in a popular hunting area within the nearby woods. She and Tanner headed there, finding the horse but being unable to catch him. Mallory also found the horse's owner - her old school teacher, Coach Doug Griggs - dead. When the police determined Griggs had been murdered, somehow Mallory found herself in the middle of the investigation - again.
As Mallory began her research - against the Sheriff's wishes - the amount of secrets she uncovered saw her being targeted. She was in danger, and it made her angry. With Tanner and Ashley looking after the rescue, Mallory, with Andy by her side, and her dad supporting her, came closer to the answers. But Mallory also came closer to the killer...
Trotting into Trouble is the 2nd in A Horse Rescue Mystery by Amber Camp and I loved it. The first in the series - Canter With a Killer - was the author's debut, and I can see I'll be continuing with this series, plus anything else Ms Camp writes. It was great to catch up with the characters again, and wonderful to be in among the horses as well. A thoroughtly enjoyable read, Trotting into Trouble is one I recommend highly.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
What is it about Amber Camp’s Cozy Mysteries that I find to be so intoxicating ? This is her second book in her Horse Rescue Mysteries but I was hooked by the time I read her first book , Canter With a Killer. I love her writing style and her ability to pull me into the book and keep me turning the pages till the last one. Amber has a love for animals and I enjoyed learning more about horses and one loud noisy donkey. Strong characters with a sleuth that won’t quit till she gets answers . I found this cozy to be unpredictable, twisted, very edge of seat and easy to read. This book has everything I like to find in a Cozy Mystery.
Mallory Martin finds herself involved in another murder investigation when she is called to rescue a horse that is running around a park without a rider. But the allusive horse leads her to it’s rider who is dead from a gunshot wound. Police want to rule it as an accidental shooting but Mallory can’t help but wonder if it is an intentional killing. The victim is a well known man in the community who at one time had influenced her life and had helped her get a scholarship to attend college. Who would want to kill Couch Griggs and what motive would they have to do so? Sheriff Grady Sullivan would like Mallory to stay out of the investigation and let him do his job. Since when did Mallory ever listen to Grady?
I recommend Trotting into Trouble to readers of Cozy Mystery and fans of Amber Camp. This book can be read as a standalone but characters from book one are carried over to this book . To have a better reading experience I recommend that book one be read first. This book is scheduled to be released on 11/14/23.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are my own.
Second in the cozy series about Mallory Martin and her horse rescue. Imbued with a passionate love of animals, especially horses, there is enough detail to please and educate any other animal lovers out there. However, that aspect is kept in tight balance with the strong mystery and cast of interesting characters. The relationships ring true and are not just used as obligatory plot points. Mallory's favorite high school teacher could have died as the result of a hunting accident. Her attention to detail leads to the discovery of the piece of evidence that makes his death seem more intended than accidental. Her natural curiosity combined with her previous career as a nurse and medical investigator won't let her drop the investigation even when the threats get real. Thanks to netgalley and Crooked Lane publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
#TrottingintoTrouble #NetGalley was just as good as I was hoping it would be. Mallory finds herself wrapped up in another murder investigation, but when those close to her are threatened, she vows to nab the culprit. Mallory is a great character and there's just something about the flow of the characters and storyline that makes this a fantastic book. I like the relationship with her and Andy, and I'm hoping her dad will become a consistent character as well. This is a good start to this new series, I hope others like it as much as I do. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
Mallory Martin owns and operates a horse rescue and has received a call from Sheriff Grady Sullivan telling her there is a loose horse in the Deadwood Lake Wildlife Management Area and he needs her help to catch it. It is hunting season so she and her volunteer turned employee Tanner don their orange vests and head up the trail. They find the horse and further up the trail, they find a dead body, Douglas Griggs, Hillspring’s star basketball coach. His death appears to be a hunting accident.
The coach's wife wants nothing to do with the horse. She tells Mallory to keep it. She does want Mallory's help though. She is sure the sheriff is overlooking vital evidence. She wants Mallory to investigate to find out who killed her husband and why. Mallory's life is busy but Mr. Griggs was her favorite high school teacher, so she agrees not realizing the danger she is putting herself in.

I was happy to be back at Hillspring Horse Rescue to get caught up with Mallory, Tanner, Ashley, and resident donkey, Biscuit. Tanner is no longer a volunteer and has some exciting ideas to discuss with Mallory. Ashley is still a volunteer as college takes up most of her time. She makes her hours at the rescue count and has some ideas to discuss with Mallory as well. Mallory and attorney Andy Hannigan's relationship is moving along nicely but he doesn't like her putting her life in danger. Mallory and Lanie's friendship hits a big bump and Sheriff Grady has his hands full with the case and all the tangential incidents. I enjoy the way these characters are written. They feel true to life. Biscuit is quite the donkey and alarm system when anyone arrives on the farm or one of the horses needs help. It takes talent to make an animal character resonant and Ms. Camp does a great job.
Mallory's rescue is so important. She has several horses in residence. Some are used for riding lessons while others are recovering and will soon be ready for adoption. Before she went to look for the loose horse she and Tanner rescued a near skeletal mare that was found during an investigation into a meth lab. My heart just broke for this several hundred pounds underweight horse, found without any water or hay. By its state, it hadn't been fed in a long time. Then when it finally had food it came down with colic. The care Mallory and Tanner took of her was amazing. Ms. Camp's knowledge and love of animals shine throughout the story.
Coach Griggs was Mallory's favorite teacher but he had changed since she was in school. Rumors were circulating and he was pushing to make changes at the school that many were not in favor of, but did that warrant killing the man? Amber became more immersed in the case as she tried to help the deceased widow. She did inform Sheriff Grady of anything she learned or her thoughts about the case. I did my best to follow along and had what I thought was a good theory but when all was revealed I was only partially right. What Ms. Camp came up with was so much better than what I was thinking.
Trotting into Trouble is an entertaining cozy mystery with genuine characters and a mystery filled with twists and turns set in a close-knit small town in Arkansas. I do not see the next book in the series available yet for pre-order. I hope this is not the last we see of these characters. So many good things were yet to come.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
I took a chance on this one even though I thought the first one was just so-so. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters in that one and unfortunately, it’s the same with this one. Mallory is so dull and wishy-washy. And the mystery itself: it takes a while to get going and even then, there’s no real action; none of it is very exciting. Didn’t read the first one? That’s okay; the author tells you no less than three times what happens and who the guilty party was. Why?!! Don’t you want to sell books?!!! I doubt I’ll pick up the next in the series despite really enjoying the horses and the setting.
I received a copy from #NetGalley and #Dreamscape_Media for an honest review.
Trotting Into Trouble is the second book in the A Horse Rescue Mystery series by Amber Camp.
Mallory Martin runs a horse rescue farm with two volunteers, Tanner and Ashley. Mallory first gets a call from her old friend, Sheriff Grady Sullivan, telling her they had investigated a possible meth lab and found an emaciated hose and asked if she could come and get it and bring it to her farm.
A few days later, Mallory gets another call from the sheriff saying a horse is loose in a wildlife area and asks if she would come and capture it. They arrive and quickly track the runaway horse, but the horse takes off every time they get close. As Mallory is looking for the horse, she trips over something and quickly realizes it is a body. Looking closer, Mallory realizes it is the body of her former high school math teacher and retired basketball coach, Doug Griggs. Sheriff Sullivan is quick to rule that it was a hunting accident. But Mallory doesn’t believe so, as she found an encrypted flash drive attached to the horse’s gear. When Mallory stops by his widow to offer her condolences and to offer to return Grigg’s horse, his widow asks Mallory to look into her late husband’s murder.
Tanner has developed a business plan for the rescue that will make people more aware of the rescue, which will help generate more donations so that they can rescue more horses. Mallory has a romantic interest, starting up with Andy, her lawyer. But will all her time spent on the investigation cause a breakup?
The story is well-written and plotted, giving great insight into the running of a horse rescue farm. The cast of characters are well-developed, engaging, and believable. There were plenty of twists and turns that I was kept guessing until the final reveal. The book reads at a nice pace. The book was hard for me to put down.
I am looking forward to the next book in this exciting series.
A very engaging, well balanced and fun cozy mystery read. The information on horses is accurate and presented well for people who do not know much about horses, and also not obnoxious for people like me, who own horses. The characters felt like real people and the relationships were compelling. I really enjoyed how well rounded the main character felt in this book; she actually felt like an adult with an adult child who was having commitment issues that also seemed understandable. Which for me is a huge plus on any cozy mystery series.
It is definitely a book I would recommend to horse lovers or animal lovers looking for a new cozy mystery series.
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced readers copy.
I thought this was a good cosy little mystery. It grabbed my attention from the first page and kept me guessing to the end. I liked the setting in a horse rescue. I did think Mallory made a few bad decisions. Overall it was good
I missed the first book in the series, but this can be read as a stand alone, without feeling like you’re missing the plot. Speaking of plot: it’s a gooder! I didn’t guess who did it until close to the end, just before the final showdown. I found the book very well written, loved all the characters, was fully engaged in the story and the setting. Basically, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect and every page of the book. I look forward to reading many more of Amber Camp’s books!
Thank you to #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for the ARC of #TrottingintoTrouble.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery. I was glad to see a horse theme for a cozy. I have had horses all my life and that is what drew me to this. There are some convoluted events that keep you guessing along the way. I like the character interaction and how it is developing from the first book. I will be looking forward to the next one in the series.
Thank you Dreamscape Media for accepting my request to audibly read and review Trotting into Trouble: Book 2 in the Horse Rescue Mystery series on NetGalley.
Narrator: Coleen Marlo
Stars 4
Classy cozy mystery with its base being a horse rescue farm. This is the second book in the series; I didn't feel left out or lost. I give props to Camp, the characters were well-defined and solid. There was a comfortably, as the relationships grew and changed, that came with good writing.
The romance was sophisticated in its growth. I thought it moved realistically.
Again, kudos to Camp for tackling abuse and abandoned horses with grace. There were no cringe moments.
I would recommend this for young readers transitioning to adult books, as well as for people with good taste and smart. This would be a good read aloud nursing home book too.
The narrator was perfect: her voice, pace, and tone.
This is a good book, the second in a series that must be read in order due to some spoilers in this one. Well plotted and a solid mystery Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Mallory is passionate about animals and those she cares for. With the former she sets up and runs a horse rescue, and the latter, she comes to the air of one of her nearest and dearest when trouble comes knocking on their door. When she finds a nugget of information that seems to make an accident appear intentional, Mallory has to use all of her skills to find out the truth.
The second book in this series, I feel it can real fine as a standalone, so don’t let this stop you from reading it…though you will want to read the first entry as well, because it’s that good!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp has Mallory realizing that she needs to be there for the people she cares about despite a mystery needing to be solved.
Can Mallory get justice for Coach Griggs' widow? Mallory Martin has a lot of good things going for her, but she sometimes self-sabotages herself by pushing people away when things get good. She doesn't mean to do this, and it seems to me that she doesn't think she deserves to be happy when she so totally does. Mal is a good person. However, she needs to realize that she needs to let things go and allow some people to help her. Including when it comes to her horses.
I have to say that I ended up liking Mal a bit more this time than I did the first time around. I only have to say that she needs to open up more communication channels with the people she cares about. Mal is an incredible person, and I like her. I hated how some of the horses were mistreated before coming to her.
The Mystery The police tasked Mallory Martin and Tanner to grab a horse so that the police could find the missing rider. The two found the horse, and he led them to the dead body. However, Mallory didn't mean to go looking for another dead body. Anyways, Coach Douglas Griggs wasn't well-liked by some people. Including Mallory herself quite recently, but she still didn't think that he deserved to die. I figured out the person who did it and a bit of the why.
Four Stars Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp is set in the late fall of Hillspring, Arkansas, where it's cold but not quite cold enough for winter to come through. Ms. Camp has done a fantastic job once again with writing this book. I am giving Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp five stars. I also recommend it for any horse lovers out there who love mystery as well.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp.
"Trotting into Trouble" is book two for Amber Camp's "A Horse Rescue Mystery" series. I feel that it is fairly stand alone and I wasn't missing anything for not having read the first book. I also got the sense that it wouldn't feel like a lot of repeated info from the first to the second if I had read the first book.
This book follows the lines of most animal rescue cozy mysteries. They rescued an abused animal, address a common issue with caring/rehabilitation of abused animals and there's also a murder that an overly involved civilian feels they have to help solve.
In this book, the overly involved civilian at least realizes they're causing stress for their loved one, except her father who is egging her on. However, it's almost more annoying than the ones who don't verbalize they realize the trouble/stress they cause to those they care for. It's like, okay...then do something about it. Also, its a bit early in the series to be this self aware that you are the problem in your relationships to the degree she is.
Overall I enjoyed the story. I will add the first book and any new ones to my tbr list on goodreads.
I really enjoyed being back at the Horse Rescue with Mallory, Tanner, and Ashley...oh and Biscuit too. I loved seeing the day to day at the horse rescue and the author managed to make it feel real. There are some hard topics regarding the horses so take caution if you are sensitive to that. This book was action packed and I didn't want to put it down. It was nice to meet some of the characters we heard about in book 1 in this book. Tanner had a bigger role in this book and I'm glad as I feel the same way about him as Mallory does. There are some relationship issues in this that some reader probably won't like but I loved it. Mallory seemed more like me navigating through her relationship issues. It was like real life. It will be nice to visit with them all again in the next book. I can't wait to read it!
Thank you to Net Galley and Crooked Lane Books for the eARC!
The horse was wrongfully accused of murder. Mallory left forensic nursing after the divorce and is operating a horse rescue facility. When the local coach is found dead during hunting season and one of his horses is running loose there are assumptions made. But Mallory and a few of her crew aren't satisfied with easy answers and investigate even when it gets dangerous. A good read with engaging characters and a solid plot that is in a new series but easily stands alone. I requested and received an EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you
I decided to read the e-arc of this book because I love horses, I fell in love with the cover, it has such a great title and I wanted to try the cozy murder mystery genre.
I loved every second of reading this wonderful book and I was sad to finish it.
As I said, I was privileged to read an e-arc of this book thanks to NetGally (thank you!!) and I’ve already added the finished hardcover copy to my Christmas wishlist because I want to hold it (hug it) and reread it, probably immediately after getting it, because I miss the characters and animals already!
Mallory runs a horse rescue and it was so lovely to follow the day to day workings of it, getting to know the employees and the animals and the fact that everyone and everything felt so real! And I just loved Mallory!! She’s a strong, stubborn, smart and fierce main character, with a heart of gold. But she also has her insecurities and flaws.
The romance! Perfection. A slow burn beautiful respectful adult romance, I thoroughly enjoyed.
You get to know so many people (friends, family, neighbors and inhabitants of this lovely quirky town) and how they interact with eachother and the struggles they face. And every question I still had about any of their particular situation, was nicely answered by the end and I really appreciated that.
Mallory goes through a lot in this book, not only because of her murder investigation, but also on a more personal level. She really loves her employees, friends, lover and family but she messes up sometimes, like we all do. She feels guilty and is not affraid to own her mistakes, which is a very admirable character trait.
This is really a relaxing, cozy and easy read but it’s also packed with adventures, big and small (mostly because of the murder mystery, which was very well done!) and it has a few scary/tense moments but they didn’t last too long.
This book made me smile, laugh, almost cry (when Mallory and the horses were in danger) and I really looked forward to picking this book up every day and feeling like I was there at the horse rescue or anywhere else in Hillspring and loving every second of it.
This is a sequel but I had no trouble reading this without having read the first book in this lovely series.
Trotting into Trouble is the second installment in the Horse Rescue Mystery series set in Hillspring, Arkansas and featuring Hillspring Horse Rescue owner and retired forensic nurse consultant, Mallory Martin. Things have calmed down at the ranch since her neighbor was murdered (Canter with a Killer) and Mallory and her two assistants, Tanner and Ashley have settled into a routine rescuing and rehabilitating horses and giving riding lessons.
Sheriff Grady Sullivan reaches out to Mal to come and rescue a severely emaciated mare that was being kept by owners of a meth lab. As they work to settle the new arrival, Mal and Tanner struggle with the mares bout of colic. A couple of days later Grady reaches out again to say that there is a horse running loose in the Deadwood Lake Wildlife Management area and there are concerns that something has happened to it's rider. Mal and Tanner are able to locate the horse but each time they get close to a capture he runs away. Mal pursues the horse through the woods and it seems that he leads her to his owner. The partially buried body belongs to Douglas Griggs, Mal's high school math teacher and mentor, and retired basketball coach. It's hunting season so all signs point to an accident, especially when a drunk man stumbles out of the woods.
Mal ends up taking in the horse because Coach Griggs widow blames the horse for his death. Mal isn't convinced the shooting was an accident and quickly finds herself in the midst of a murder investigation with the killer setting his sight on her. Vandalism at the rescue and to her truck, have her boyfriend Andy Harrigan and the Sheriff warning her to mind her own business.
A fun, afternoon read that will tug at your heartstrings. A delightful cast of humans and animals (I want my very own Biscuit). I can't wait to see what develops next for Mal, her family, friends and animals.
I received an advanced copy of Trotting into Trouble from NetGalley via Crooked Lane Books. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
Mallory Martin, who runs a horse rescue, is called by her friend Sheriff Grady Sullivan when a loose horse in a hunting area needs to be captured. While trying to entice the horse to come to her, Mallory stumbles onto a body - the rider of the horse. Even though she is concentrating on the horse, she recognizes the victim as basketball Coach Douglass Griggs. He was her favorite teacher when she was a student.
At first it looks like Grigg's death was an unfortunate hunting accident, but things aren't adding up at a closer look. Someone removed his orange vest and attempted to obscure his body by covering it with leaves. And the more she looks the more it seems that someone really wanted him dead.
When Mallory gets the horse back to her rescue, she discovers that Griggs has added an encrypted flash drive to the horse's gear. Mallory also gets herself kicked in the calf by the horse and finds herself limping through the rest of the story.
Mallory's curiosity has her investigating the death despite the sheriff's disapproval. Her obsession with the case threatens her relationship with her best friend and her new romantic partner whom she has not yet introduced to her daughter. It also places her right in the sights of the killer who wants Mallory out of the way.
This was an entertaining story. I liked the characters and especially liked the animal characters from the difficult horse she names Jet to her latest rescue that she names Ruby. I liked her dog Banjo and terrible Timmy the Yorkie was a great character too. And who couldn't fall in love with Biscuit the resident donkey. The human characters were equally memorable.
Animal Lovers Cozy Mystery in which an Arkansas horse rescue owner turns sleuth after being asked to look into the supposed accidental death of the high school basketball coach.
5/5 stars: This is the newest entry in the Horse Rescue Mystery series, which is an Animal Lover's Cozy Mystery featuring an Arkansas horse rescue owner. With nice twists and turns, Camp's mystery balances the suspects, clues and red herrings deftly and will leave you pondering the whodunit 'til the final reveal. In addition, Camp's characters are incredibly likable; Mallory's not only independent and tough but I find her background as a legal nurse consultant interesting. It's also nice to see Mallory and Andy's relationship grow. Additionally, her friendship woes with Lanie are realistic and I get a kick out of her and Grady, her friend and the Sheriff, bumping heads over the investigation. Plus I love the team she's built at the rescue, particularly Tanner. I was never a “horse girl” but I have to say I love reading about all the rescue's various horses, Jet and Ruby specifically, and the other animal residents... Biscuit, the adorable donkey and Banjo, Mallory's lovable dog. This book touches on some tough topics, so take care and check the CWs. As this is the second book in the series, be sure to check out book one, Canter With a Killer.
I received this eARC thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books in exchange for an honest review. Publishing dates are subject to change.
In the second of the series, protagonist Mallory Martin gets a call about a riderless horse running in a park and they need her expertise with the Hillspring Horse Rescue to corral the animal. He’s spooked but as she calms him, finds the rider—dead. It doesn’t feel like an accident to her and she is compelled to look deeper into the situation as she knew the man. Coach Griggs was a good influence in her life. This has become personal.
Of course the sheriff has warned her to stay out of it, but he wants to declare a hunting accident. Then she finds a piece of evidence overlooked by law enforcement.
Mallory is a smart character, feels real, and has great support characters who come alive in the pages, including Biscuit, the donkey, and Banjo, the “goofy blue heeler.” I enjoyed the knowledge imparted about horses.
Well written, well paced (no let down in the middle of the storyline), and an atmospheric rural setting keeps the pages turning.
The evidence and her investigation leads to a satisfying conclusion, along the way side-tracked with a few twists and turns.
Fun new cozy animal mystery (loved the cover) and I look forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author and publisher through @NetGalley that in no way influenced this review. These are my honest thoughts. 4.5 stars
Book two in the Horse Rescue Mystery series by Amber Camp is Trotting into Trouble, which releases November 14, 2023. Mallory is asked by the sheriff to catch a loose horse missing it’s rider. In the process, Mallory stumbles over the dead body of retired teacher and high school basketball coach, Douglas Riggs. The police believe all signs point to a tragic riding accident, but Mallory finds a few details that don’t add up. She ends up back in the midst of another murder investigation after the coach’s widow asks for her help solving the case. But Mallory needs to watch her back- as she gets closer to finding out who the killer is, she puts herself in line to be their next victim 😱
I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series. I was more invested in the mystery and thought the pacing was steady. Tanner and Andy were my favorite characters. I enjoyed seeing their relationships expand with Mallory. This book could be read as a stand-alone, but fully details particulars from the first book, so my recommendation is to read them in order. It’ll give you greater context into the characters and their relationships and provide additional background.
Amber Camp is clearly very knowledgeable about horses, and I truly enjoyed the asides explaining truths every horse owner knows all too well. I ended up reading this one on my kindle and rated it ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5/ 5 stars- rounded up). I look forward future installments in the series.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for Trotting into Trouble in exchange for an honest review.
I gave 4 stars to Trotting into Trouble by Amber Camp
-------- REVIEW --------
The second book in A Horse Rescue Mystery. I have read the first one and liked both of them very much. This book had a more interesting mystery and I didn't figure out whodunit. What I like about this series are all the animals. It is a fun theme that I have never seen in a cozy mystery before.
Last time I read the book and this time I listened to it. The narrator did a fantastic job and I recommend the audiobook for people who prefer those. I will be continuing in the series.
Thank you, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I read the first of the series and reviewed it earlier. I enjoyed this book even more than the last and am glad I took the chance to continue reading this series.
The point that stuck out the most with this book was that the people and most of the circumstances seemed genuinely feasible. The interactions between the primary protagonist and everyone around her is tumultuous this time around for several different reasons and she learns and grows over the course of the story.
Mallory is in a relationship, whether she admits it or not. It's not something she planned, but now that it's here, she's finding it hard to share the information. Calls on her time are more as well. Her Horse rescue efforts are ongoing and her entire enterprise needs something more to keep it going. To top it all, someone she once admired is found dead and she can't stop investigating, given her previous job and interest in the people involved.
Some of the investigating is sloppily done with appropriate repercussions. It was interesting and kept me hooked till the very end. I would recommend this series to people who are tired of other cozy mystery series.
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
There's lots I love about this mystery: the horse rescue world, the likeable main character, and the mostly satisfying mystery plot, for starters. The reason this is a 3- and not a 4-star review is just because of the murderer's identify. I seem to have read quite a few cozies in the last six months where the killer I just find that kind of resolution doesn't work for me at all--though maybe I'm the only one. But it seems like too easy of a way out, and it's rarely at all believable for me.
I did enjoy this book up until that ending! I'm going back to read book 1 in the series. I'm hopeful this type of ending is just a one-off, because I like the world created in this series.
Review copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second in series and a exciting addtion to this series. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
Mallory runs a horse rescue and is devoted to the well being of horses. When she receives a call to find a loose horse she finds the body of the rider, ,a local coach. Mallory has a talent for finding clues having solved one murder and finds many red herrings and clues abound as she investigates this second murder.
I like Mallory as a protagnist that is focused on her business of horse rescue. She is a smart savvy protagnist that is very likable to the reader. The description of the horses in her care are done with the author's obvious love of horses that is a delight to read. I enjoy the supporting characters who all add to the series and I hope to read more of in the next book. The sleuth kept me guessing to conclusion as twist and turns of clues did not stop Mallory from looking in the right direction. A strong second in series . I look forward to the next book in the series.
You can lead a horse to water, and did you know, a horse can lead you to a murder? This is what happens to Molly Martin. Molly owns a horse rescue farm and she is called to help corral a "runaway horse" What she finds is the dead body of Coach Griggs, a teacher she had in school. Coincidentally, Coach Griggs had been at her farm looking at a horse tye day before. Sheriff Grady Sullivan is ready to call it a tragic accident. Molly doesn't think that is the case, she found a flash drive hidden on the horse. She talks to the coach's wife who asks her to look into the death.
Molly begins her own investigation. Someone doesn't want her finding the truth, she is warned to stop twice. She must be on the right track.
This is an enjoyable cozy mystery. My favorite character, Biscuit, the donkey is a delight! This can be read without having read the first, Canter with a Killer. The characters are well developed and the story moves along at a good pace.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, for an ARC. The review is my own.
Premise - When her town's star basketball coach turns up dead, Mallory is on the case. It's a twisty ride full of small-town politics, but all the twists pay off in a very satisfying ending!
This is #2 in the series, but I read it without reading #1 and was just fine.
Mallory is a well-developed, relatable protagonist and it's fun to accompany her on this adventure. I'm not a horse person so I was a little nervous about taking this ARC, but it's so well-written (and paced!) that it's easy to stay engaged even if you're not super into horses. Frankly, reading the book has made me more interested in horses than I was before!
I would definitely read more from this author. The ending was well earned, clues were paid off, twists were twisty. Murder mystery fans will enjoy this!
Thanks, NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
