Decoding the Japanese Mind through Expressions

Rate this book
This fascinating top seller for over ten years has now been published in English.

The book is designed to help students learn about Japanese sensibilities and culture through explanations of commonly used words and phrases such as “kejime” (distinction), “seken” (world, society), and “kuki wo yomu” (read the air, read the room). It also explains many of the life values that Japanese people have long held important, such as “bushidou” (the way of the warrior) and “wabi-sabi” (an aesthetic sense in Japanese art).

There are seven main chapters covering topics like “uchi to soto”, being aware of the eyes of others, respecting relationships, restraining your expressions, Japanese values, and spiritualism. Each phrase is introduced with an explanation, and then there are several examples of its use before a deeper look at the history of the phrases.

Not only has the book been translated into English for the first time, but the terminology and explanations have been revised to reflect changes in Japanese society in the ten years since the first edition was released.

Furthermore, additional explanations and new sections have been added to help the reader understand more about Japanese culture. Some of these additions include information about the origin of the phrase “kashikomarimashita” and also how “kangaeteokimasu” can be used to decline invitations and requests.

A perfect book for anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of Japan and its culture, and a handy supplementary tool for those who teach Japanese.
