Hope and Lies

Rate this book
A secret rebellion rages.
Generations ago a plague ravaged the world. Grey-Stars rose from the ruins, formed the country of Pangaea, and created a society of peace and order. The caste system maintains this peace, and the Grey-Stars maintain the castes.
Now, the lower castes fight against their subjugation. A small portion of the population begins to discover rare abilities, supernatural powers that aid in the battle for equality and justice, but the Grey-Stars won’t let go of their supremacy without a fight.
A Grey-Star turns traitor, serving as a rebel captain and using her alter ability to get revenge against her own people for the atrocities they’ve committed. Despite her skill as a soldier and her power as an alter, desperation grows. What will it take to turn the tide? Her efforts never seem like enough, and war demands sacrifice.
A young woman goes through the Coding and is plunged to the lowest caste of society. While navigating a world entirely new to her, she discovers the reality of Pangaea is not what she was taught. Finding a family, and finding herself, she realizes just how far she will go to keep her new friends safe.
A runaway is cursed by his own gift. Drowning in a sea of emotion. When hope is lost, can he be the leader his brother always thought he was... or will he succumb to his grief and lose his way?

HOPE AND LIES is the first book in the Abredea series. This thick dystopian fantasy took me back to the dystopian era spearheaded by The Hunger Games, and if you were a fan of that franchise (or the dystopian books of those years in gerenal), I strongly encourage checking out this book.

Though the size may seem daunting, don’t let that stop you. I myself hardly felt the length of the book thanks to its twists, engaging storyline and the characters you can’t help but love. What made the reading experience so easy was also the way the author introduced us to the world little by little, with no excessive info-dumps that would have made the world building confusing and hard to follow. On the contrary, we discover the world as the story progresses, through the characters’ eyes and the things they know. This helped me understand the caste system in an organic way, and also allowed me to experience the injustice of such a strict hierarchy alongside characters such as Juliana or Cho.

The characters are undoubtedly the book’s biggest strength and ultimately what made the three different storylines so compelling. These three stories don’t intersect for the majority of the book, yet there is never a doubt that somehow they will, and they each serve to understand the society and history of Pangaea, the rebellion, the caste system, and the alters as a whole. I greatly enjoyed all three perspectives, especially the present chapters following Juliana, Anthony and their fellow White-Stars in Abredea, and Cho and the other alter kids in Haven. The character interactions, the friendships, and the sense of community and found family were strongest in these chapters had me invested the most. However, my favorite twist was undoubtedly the one concerning Maybelle, the character from the past.

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

This book reminded me why I love dystopian fiction so much. I absolutely flew through it and it is an EASY 5 stars for me. It incorporates elements you’re used to seeing in dystopian fiction (population divided into segments, corrupt government) but tells the story on a completely unique way. If you (like me), went through a “binge everything dystopian I can get my hands on” phase…or even if you didn’t…you MUST give this book a shot. Don’t let the page count scare you. You’ll fly through it.

I absolutely CANNOT WAIT for book two because I have so many questions 👀 also, this book is told through multi POV and a split timeline, but it was perfectly easy to follow. I loved figuring out how the stories related or were going to intersect!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I absolutely love reading books in third person and many indie books are written in first. It was so amazing to see this one is different!

The author has an amazing voice and is able to capture her characters perfectly. They were well flushed out and I felt like I was in their head without actually being in their head.

Overall, this is such a fun read and I can’t wait to hear more from this author.

Wow. I am completely blown away by Hope and Lies. This is probably my favorite book that I have read this year, it’s SO FREAKING GOOD. Sorry in advance, this is going to be a long one because I have a lot to say 😌

C.H. Lyn has completely enraptured me with her writing. The characters in this story are so incredibly beautifully written, each one having so much growth and development in JUST ONE BOOK! How?! I have completely fallen in love with all of them, but Juliana was by far my favorite. I can’t even express how much I loved her fierceness, her ferocity, her loyalty and gentleness, her compassion and her sense of justice. She is thrown into an incredibly scary and lonely situation, and instead of spending the entire book wallowing in self-pity, we get to see this strong-ass woman pick herself up, open her eyes to the world around her and fight back for what she knows is right. I cannot wait to see what else is in store for her in the books to come.

The rest of the large ensemble cast is just as great, don’t let my love-fest for Juliana deter you. Anthony has my whole heart, and Cho is my child- I love him and he must be protected at all costs. This book does have a lot of POV that we switch between and it’s a bit of an adjustment in the very beginning as we get to know each new group.

The setting and plot of this book is dystopian at its BEST and still manages to be so incredibly unique and interesting. A world torn apart by plague, only to be brought back together by the mighty Grey-Stars, who naturally are the top of the caste system. Finding out all these little details about the world and the politics behind the way their government is run was so interesting and I will be (not so) patiently waiting for the sequel to this so I can devour it and find out more.

If this crazy raving review hasn’t convinced you yet, I don’t know what can 😂 Please go treat yourself and pick up this amazing book, and I hope that you love it as much as I did.

Did I just find my favorite dystopian fantasy read of all time? Yes.

The feeling when you find a book that is perfect in worldbuilding, plot and characters is unmatched, and that is what I found in Hope and Lies. I was immediately intrigued by the book, and the feeling only grew as I moved forward. The book moves with three different plots—one in the past, two in the present. You know—you just know that they’re somehow going to connect, and the whole time, you’re trying to figure out how that is. It’s been a long time since I’ve highlighted my ebook so much to take note of all the details that might clue me in on the twists, only to wind up blown away regardless. I was hooked and the pages just flew. I finished smaller books in a lot more time than it took me to read this one. Heck, a book that was about the same length took me a month, and I inhaled this in a week. That’s how good it is.

The chapters I enjoyed the most were the ones in Abredea aka the White-Star camp with Juliana, Anthony and their friends. Juliana is a young woman who loses everything the day of her Coding. The gemstones on her settle on white, therefore she goes from being raised in one of the higher castes of society to the bottom of the food chain. Reading those chapters, I was distraught for her. I felt her pain, her confusion, but I also admired her strength, resilience and ability to change and grow stronger with the help of the friends she makes. There is a very subtle romantic subplot in these chapters between her and another character (I’m not sure I can say or if it’ll be considered a spoiler, so I’ll shut up), but it was enough to have me smiling and shipping, and I need these two to be happy and together.

I recommend this to everyone who enjoys great worldbuilding and characters and loves the found family trope! Really excited to see what happens next. I loved seeing how everything wove together in the end.

Thank you to the author who gifted me a copy. Opinions are my own.

Hope and Lies is an incredible dystopian novel. I already had a fond love for dystopian stories from having grown up on Hunger Games but getting back into this genre hasn’t been easy lately! I was worried I was going to have the same problem early on with Hope and Lies, but obviously you’ve seen the star rating so let me explain.

Hope and Lies starts out with a pretty intense time jump. We’re seventy years in the past and introduced to Maybelle and Kate. Instantly I was invested in their story. Then we jump forward to Juliana’s timeline and begin following her. Shortly thereafter, we meet Cho (same timeline, different place) and we learn about him. Now we’re sitting at three MCs and two-ish timelines. This was where I started to question if I was going to continue. Luckily, I do feel like these time jumps were used well once I got used to who was in what timeline. Lyn was quickly able to get me invested in at least two of these separate stories to the point that I kept reading. At about the halfway point, the plot twist hit me like a freight train and I was crying in the tub reading this book. Shocked that it took me so long but then Lyn hits us with another “oh shït.” and suddenly it all came together. I’m really hoping book two is on the way soon because while it’s not so much a steep cliff she’s left us on but there are loose ends and emotions we still need to cope with!

TW: child abuse, death of a parent (off page), grief, graphic physical violence, torture (off page, outcome described on page), blood, mention of sexual assault

Hope and Lies is the first book in the Abredea series. C.H. Lyn carefully intertwines three compelling storylines in this dystopian fantasy. It is told through multiple POV’s and different timelines.
With destruction, secret rebellions, politics, caste systems, kidnappings, supernatural powers, traitors, sacrifices, domination and control and family there is something for all lovers of dystopian tales.
There is desperation, grief, pain, hope, love and wonder. I was so immersed in the story that the pages just flew by.
A cleverly crafted tale where the worldbuilding is spot on, a well-written storyline and has three wonderfully intriguing plots. The diverse cast of characters are well written and interesting, and you become invested in them.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series. Dystopian fans will love it.

What a beautifully built dystopian fantasy world with a well-written storyline!! Don't let the page count freak you out...if you're a fan of short chapters with multiple character perspectives, REJOICE. Lyn has such a captivating style and voice that those pages truly zoom! This is the kind of book I appreciate so much for its nostalgic nod to the iconic series in the YA dystopian genre, but still completely unique and not at all derivative. In this book you'll find a diverse cast of characters, the found family trope, and romantic elements--my favorite!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

Hope and Lies Review

Possible spoilers…

Let me just start off by saying I’m a huge fan of urban fantasy and dystopian worlds.

This book takes place in Pangea, a world where you are designated into certain Castes. You don’t have a choice on who you’ll be. It is decided by the grey stars, the government based on your test results. The one area you do not want to be coded into is the white stars, the outcasts.

Cheyenne blew me away with her world building. I loved how seamlessly she transitions from multiple POV’s and lapses of time. Incredibly flawless. She had me in a chokehold from the very beginning. Not to mention her character development is on point. There are two that stick out the most to me, Maybelle and Juliana.

Maybelle starts out following the rules set forth and holding all the stars in line. Only to find out what she has been told is all a lie. (My mind was blown on how deep the deception went.) She transitions into this epic rebel leader with incredible powers, fighting for a free world to being encamped with all the white stars. I have so much respect for May. I was sobbing for her by the end.

Juliana has the biggest character arc and so much more to come. She starts out as a privileged brat, daughter to blue stars or doctors/research, to being coded a white star. She’s abandoned by friends and family into an unknown world. Once she reaches Abredea the adventure begins. The amount of heart it took for Juls to unlearn the lies she’s been taught and fight for justice is nothing short of amazing. Did I mention powers? My mouth dropped at the end with the big dark secret reveal.

Read if you’re a fan of:
✔️epic world building
✔️unique power systems
✔️dystopian society
✔️dark secrets
✔️time lapses
✔️dual POV

If you love dystopian worlds then this an absolute must read!

First of all, I have to mention that I absolutely love books that are told in different timelines, especially when one is set in the past and another in the present! Second, I love multiple POVs, there’s nothing like a story that’s told from different perspectives. Third dystopian books/stories/movies in which we have separated districts or cities have always pulled at my attention. And maps! I can’t even explain how much I love maps in books. Hope and Lies definitely delivered when it comes to all of the things above mentioned. Also, I have great respect for authors who list the trigger warnings at the beginning of their book.

The book starts seventy years in the past, here we follow Maybelle’s story, and in the next chapters we are introduced to Juliana and Cho, whose story is in the present. Following three different timelines might seem like a lot to some but as you read it becomes so much easier, we learn about the world through the characters. And even though this book has an amazing world-building I have to say that the characters are this book’s biggest strength.

I enjoyed reading this book so much I struggled when it came to putting it down. There are lots of twists and turns which make you want to keep reading, even at the very beginning we have a little twist when Maybelle is betrayed by someone she trust a lot.

If you like all the things I mentioned then this book is definitely for you. But before picking it up make sure to check the trigger warnings.

Thank you so much @telepathy.booktours and @chlyn.author for having me on this tour!

I haven’t visited the dystopian era for so long and this book took me back and made me relive some of my favorite moments as a teenage girl. I’m a sucker for good dystopian books and it has been so long since a book reached my expectations. But this one? EXCEEDED. EVERY. EXPECTATIONS. I HAD!

An awesomely done debut novel, “Hope and Lies” is definitely gonna be the next big thing out there! The book is quite lengthy but don’t let that scare you away; it’s gonna take you on a ride and it’s gonna leave you wanting more! The character diversity and the representation in the book is top tier and I also absolutely loved the whole setting and the world building! This is the perfect mix of romance and fantasy and superpowers! The author’s writing style is very impressive especially since this is her first novel and this is definitely gonna be an author I go back to every time I need a good dystopian to read! And let’s not forget to mention that this book is the reason I am getting out of a terrible reading slump! I am definitely going to reread this before book two comes out and I cannot wait to see what this author brings us!

Let me just start off with saying I LOVED this book! If I’m being honest I was not really in the mindset to start a dystopian book and wasn’t sure how this read was going to go for me. With that said, I am SO glad I gave this book a shot b/c this is an instant 5 star read!

The character development, diversity, and the world building are exceptional! I absolutely devoured this book (and sitting at over 500 pages, it is a lengthy book). The blend of romance, suspense, action, superpowers, and political (caste) intrigue is so well done. This book has a bit of everything and will keep you engaged at every flip of the page.

Told from 3 different POVs/timelines I absolutely love how the story and plot eventually tie together at the end. There are just so many characters to love (and hate) and I was thoroughly invested for the whole ride. (Juliana is so amazing, Jane is the best, Daisy must be protected at all costs, and helloooo Tony)! Honestly I’m attached to so many…thats some seriously strong character building!

The writing is just so well done, I cannot believe this is a debut novel! This story gripped me from the start, kept me in a choke hold all the way through, and now I’m deeply invested in the rest of the journey! Needless to say I am anxiously awaiting Book 2 in the Abredea Series!

Hope and Lies by C.H. Lyn is a thrilling dystopian fantasy that could best be described as X-Men meets The Hunger Games. In the world of Pangaea, people are assigned to a caste on their twentieth birthday in a process called the “Coding”. This novel follows three different characters as they discover the dark truth about their society and rebel against the current caste system.

Like many novels where there’s complex world-building, it took me a minute to really get into this one. But once I did, I was absolutely hooked! The stories were so compelling, I could hardly put this one down and I flew through the 500+ pages. (Do NOT be intimidated by the page count, I promise you that you’ll blow through it quickly.) I thought the world that Lyn had crafted was deeply interesting and the characters were all lovable and easy to root for - super important qualities to have when you’re reading a dystopian novel like this.

Thank you so much to author C.H. Lyn for gifting us a copy of this gripping story! Now please hurry up and finish writing the sequel!!!

I just finished this and I really enjoyed it! I loved the Pangaea world.

The characters had me hooked, this is perfect for found family lovers. I had flashbacks of Hunger games and specks of divergent but with superpowers. There are bits of romance moments but that is more of a side plot, hopefully we see more in books to come! I loved seeing the growth in the characters, the rebellious ways of the team brings them all together.

The topic of grief is definitely something we look at with a heavy heart. This harsh reality really helped the story flow and give that strength to get them thru the obstacles. The author keeps us hooked with the elements of superpowers in this dystopian world, which I absolutely love! It was great to see the details on this main event in the story.

I am looking forward to learning more! Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.

This was an incredible dystopian fantasy! This is the first book in the Abredea series and I flew through it. Don’t let the page count intimidate you, as it’s a pretty quick read. The world building, plot, and characters were all perfectly executed and this made for a remarkable read.

This book is told through multiple points of view and has a split timeline, which I really enjoyed. Sometimes stories that are formatted this way can be hard to follow, but that wasn’t the case here at all. The author did a really good job at connecting the stories and being able to figure out how they were related was a fun element as a reader.

I really enjoyed getting to know the characters throughout this book, as they all grew so much as the story progressed. I feel so invested in each character’s story and I can’t wait to see where they all end up as the series continues.

If you are a fan of dystopian fantasies you should definitely give this one a read, you won’t regret it!

The first book in a series that has me waiting for the next instalment!

This new to me author wowed me with her ability to write fantasy in a way that immerses you into Pangaea. From cover to cover I really felt like I was along for the journey with these amazing characters!

H & L has some amazing tropes such as found family, a romance sub plot and dystopian elements. Lyn effortlessly blends all these elements in a way that keeps you wanting more, this is a longer read but I was constantly locked in unable to look away, I never knew what was around the corner or what the MCs were up to next. This is definitely a book you should read when you know you have time because you’re going to struggle to put it down for even a second.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

"There is no order without caste. There is no peace without order."

THIS BOOK.

I initially started reading this book digitally, but switched to my paperback copy once I realized how badly I needed to flag every last part of it. If you know me, you know that I don't typically bother with annotations... They're more work, and slow me down from reading a book. But this book gave me all the feels, and so I had to flag it.

Can this book be binge read? Absolutely. I almost did. But for me, I felt it deserved to be slow read and thoroughly enjoyed, and with tabbing it, my time was much more limited.

Here's the important part though: I have thought about this book every day for the past month, regardless of if I had the time and ability to read it. It is a well thought out and intricate work of art. The connections that I made towards the middle and end of the book that were alluded to in the beginning of the book were mind-blowing. At one point, I almost started the book over from the beginning, because it's that well planned out. The multiple POVs all on the same but different paths converging together? Chefs kiss.

The long and short of it: if you like dystopians, government conspiracies, found family, multiple POVs and a story of finding oneself, then you need to read this book.

From the very beginning, this dystopian had elements of the story that reminded me of Hunger Games and Divergent. I enjoy venturing into the new realms of dystopian novels and this one did not disappoint! It is a bit confusing in the beginning learning how the sequence of events converge. Just to warn readers that this book is a bit lengthy but well worth it. The main theme is a society on a mission to seek peace and order, and as a result castes are created. As special abilities emerge within a small group of people in the castes, seeking justification is sought out but efforts seem to fail. The determination is quite evident and they are seeking for their place in the world!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Hope and lies by C.H. Lyn was such a good book. I was so exited to read it and it didn’t disappoint. The writing of this book was amazing and the tropes were some that I really enjoyed. Even tough I don’t particularly like books in 3rd person point of view I found myself enjoying this book a lot. The characters were really good and they made the story even better. I really cannot wait to continue this series and see what else C.H Lyn writes.

3.5 stars! If x-men and red queen had a dystopian baby this would be the book. We follow 3 main characters with tons of fun side characters as we watch various forms of rebellion on multiple timelines. I was a little weary as I began the book in trying to keep all the different characters separate and figure out what was happening. But I grew to absolutely love the characters. I loved their growth and the way the story unfolded and eventually all wove together. I’m excited to see where book 2 goes!

If you like dystopian reads, this has all the elements you’ll love - corrupt governments and warring caste systems. There are three distinct stories, each with their own characters. I love that each story is told separately leading up to their initial entwinement. I haven’t read much dystopian but this one did not disappoint.
Each storyline is full of colorful and fun side characters which keeps the storylines more interesting. It’s a well written book that bounces the reader between future and past.

*received as an arc*

This book made me remember why I loved dystopian novels. It was so amazing. The twists and turns of this book were so well thought out and well written. The way they approached grief in this book was so well done. I felt the grief alongside them. It does take a minute to fully get into the swing of things, but that's just because there is so much information that you are trying to absorb. I loved all of the POVs. I don't think I was bored during any of them. And I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes.

To start off I loved the multiple POVs and timeline jumps! The different districts/cities with fences around them along with the caste system reminded me of The Hunger Games/Divergent series and I was definitely interested from the get go. I’ve been reading a TON of fantasy books lately and having a dystopian book in the mix gave me a good refresh that I didn’t realize I needed.

While the book is a little on the bigger side, i personally think it’s worth the read and can’t wait for another!
