Retribution was a powerful weapon.
Once Upon a Legend was an enchanting tale that was woven together beautifully. It was impossible not to be fascinated with this magical world. With a retelling involving the Ladies of the Lake, it made me feel like I was watching a movie play out in my head. One that at first glance may seem like a Disney tale, YET as this story unfolds you see just how much darker, grittier and so much deeper this story goes. There was murder and so much unknown laced in the pages, it felt as though plans were in place for something bigger than them. So if you adore young adult stories that feature lore, magic, sword fighting, traitors, friendship, and the sparks of something more, then this is definitely the book for you!
I shivered, an icy blast of wind sprayed over my face. The white light from the blade, like a thousand diamonds blessed with inner fire, beckoned me to reach out for it.
Idrisa was fierce, determined and brave. She was raised in the Dumont Orphan School and the friendships she created meant the world to her. They had been with her since the beginning. So as we watched her train and go through the motions of being at school, I loved that she learned from her mistakes and pushed herself to be better. Idrisa was someone we could definitely look up to. When her school was invited to a birthday gala for Prince Merrick, Idrisa's whole world was going to change forever. At the gala, the goddesses of the lake gave Idrisa the sword. The one the King desperately wanted. And with that fear in my bones, I had no clue where this story would go.
“Do not fear when the time comes. If you risk everything, you will gain what you seek.”
Prince Merrick seemed to radiate pain and sorrow. He missed his mother with his whole heart and soul. Yet life continued and surrounding him were his brothers, father and the expectations for all of them. As we watched Prince Merrick, the tests he was put through seemed unfathomable. He showed us he was honorable, true and someone we could trust....or so I hoped. Especially when his father, the King, imprisoned Idrisa after she obtained the sword. I hoped those chain of events would be the fire that would light him to live again. Because he had so much potential, and I loved the spark between him and Idrisa!
“Family is not only created by blood, but within the heart. Forever may our bond be strong. And like the stars, may our light never die.”
The side characters in this book filled the pages with their passion. Rocco was one I was unsure of. He was so protective of Idrisa and I was beyond grateful for that. But his words weren't for me. That's because I had already fallen for the prince so easily. Yet I have a lot of guesses for his future! And Knox, who helped the prince, was someone I adored. But on the other side, I hated the evil characters! They felt like sociopaths who had no moral ground to stand on. What they would do in the name of what they thought was right or what they wanted *shudders*, there was no line for them that they wouldn't cross. So hold on, because not everyone we care for will end up safe.
One of us had to die, and it wasn’t going to be me.
Magic, sword fighting, darkness, betrayal, truths, and a slow burn romance filled Once Upon a Legend. The twists in this book were fabulously done! The why and also who someone was, my mind was blown. I didn't see those coming. And I loved that alliances were made with those that were unlikely, it left me so excited to see how that will pan out! This story was skillfully crafted and I loved that we even got a chapter or two from characters I didn't even think we would. The way it added to the depths of this story were magical! This story closed with leaving us at a good stopping point, but I'm excited to see what happens next. And I just have to say that even though this story is young adult, I think it would be a great read for middle graders to pick up too!
I am worthy. I am deserving. You can’t take away who I am.

The language used in the whole book appears to be very intentional, clear, and colorful. It creates a world that is a mix of myth and real, relatable emotion, thus, making every chapter captivating. Characters become the same way, influenced by the decisions they take and the realities they discover. The mood of the story is a nice mix of awe and tightening of the chest. The story ends up making you feel like being part of the world, caring for its people and wanting to know what is even beyond the last page. It is a nice return of fantasy that seems to be both current and ageless

There’s a legion of darkness full of enemies & beasts lurking, magic wielders coming of age while learning nothing is as it seems, & truths shared that will change everything! Careful who you trust!! Once bewitched you may not be able to break free. I am so excited to read more of this series! Too many possibilities to know which way Ting will take us.

Review :
This is a YA Fantasy with elemental magic, a chosen one, love triangle tropes and also have animal companions, faes and lots of mysteries.
The book starts with Prince Merrick of Dumonia and he's just lost his mother and going through the pain as well as the things his mother told him before her death plaguing his mind. Then we meet Idrisa, an orphan girl, who's starting to feel magic within her. A magic which is banned from the common folk, only the king of the kingdom and his heirs have the magic left within themselves. At this time the kingdom decides to celebrate Prince Merrick's birthday and all the common folks are invited to join. In this celebration things happen, and it makes Idrisa the owner of the most powerful sword forged by the Lady of the Lake, as well as into the prison later.
And we go with this magical, fairytale journey to see what happens to Idirsa, to Merrick and how they overcome all their obstacles and unearth the mysteries and restore the peace in the kingdom.
I absolutely enjoyed the book. It is a true YA Fantasy. The author did an exceptional job to introduce the world and the magic system as well as a good introduction of the main characters and the minor characters, so that we don't have the slightest problem later on.
The story is told from both Idrisa and Merrick's pov, so we get to see both the sides and the intricacies and the journey of both of them.
The story has friendship, young love, battles, mysteries, betrayals, twists and turns a perfect book, if you also like to read, easy, fast paced YA fantasy books. Definitely recommend.

Oh wow. This turned out to be a surprising read for me. I expected a middle age-esque kind of setting and while it somehow collided to that, there was also some magic and a lot of twists.
Think of Game of Thrones x King Arthur kind of mash up. Idrisa, the FMC, grew up in an orphanage with several other children. Unbeknownst to her, she was selected to be the King Arthur of a sword blessed by the goddesses called Calibur. Said sword was highly coveted by the Emperor.
Prince Merrick, still wallowing in grief with the death of his mother discovered conspiracies upon conspiracies done by his father, the Emperor and his evil aunt (which kinda reminds me of Maleficent for some odd reason)
Idrisa and Merrick's fate started to intertwine when both realized their magic reacts to each other. Now, they have to learn how to navigate the newfound knowledge while learning the violent history behind it.
The twists were interesting enough for a first book, will definitely look forward to book two.

I thought the premise and the storyline of this book were extremely interesting. If I could get my hands on the sequel right now, I would read it instantly because I’m really invested in the story and I’d like to know how it turns out. The character growth was so well done, as each of the two main characters slowly came to terms with their destiny and what they had to do. The side characters were also easy to like and the villain was so well-written.
My only complaint was that sometimes, the shift between the perspectives of the different characters felt repetitive, as we had to read the same scene but from different points of view. Also, sometimes, the dialogue felt awkward, but still, overall, I thought this book was a very enjoyable experience and I would recommend it.

I thought the premise and the storyline of this book were extremely interesting. This book was absolutely fantastic! It is an incredible story filled with well developed and captivating characters playing parts in a world full of mystery and prophecy, crammed with action and touching moments.
This story takes place in the mystical realm of Dumnonia and has elements of magic, friendship, betrayel, mythology and action. I absolutely love the world building and inhibition of supernatural powers. While it provided history in depth with richness, it was a bit slow paced to my liking.
Overall, I was totally enamored by the entire book and can't wait to delve more into this series.

OMG, what an amazing new world this is to explore with new characters that I am in love with!!!
The characters are awesome!! Getting to know each character has been so enjoyable and I crave to know more about them!!
The storyline was remarkable!! It's so full of action and edge of your seat suspense!! I literally didn't want to put this book down!! And that ending...I was so caught up in the story that I didn't see the ending coming!! Ting has built an incredible new world for us to explore and enjoy and I highly recommend this read!!

Well, as usual, Mary Ting has gone above and beyond with this new one. A fantasy and the start of a new series is sure to be a huge hit. Her books are so easy to read and follow. Her story flows in such a way as to keep the reader turning pages. I love everything she does and this is no exception. A great story with great characters!

Once Upon a Legend has an amazing story line that kept me interested the entire time! I absolutely loved this book, the characters, and the world Mary Ting has created! I am exited to read more stories written by Mary Ting! This really is a must read and has become one of my new favorites!

Wow... Wow... Wow! What a captivating read! Mary Ting has, again, created another enchanting fantasy that whisked me away to this world of secrets, lies, and magic. From the beginning, I was completely absorbed into this beguiling story, and followed these characters' journey and adventure. Once Upon a Legend is a gripping and enchanting twist to the stories of King Arthur, Excalibur, and the Lady of the Lake. This definitely gave off the same kind of enthralling action and adventure vibe like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films... That's what came to mind as I took a moment to take in what I read.
Told in multiple POVs (point of view), the story gave off a well rounded perspective of each character's parts they played as the "prophecy" unfolds... and secrets are revealed. Great characters and the "dark ages" settings made for a wonderous and adventurous epic tale of magic and romance. But... What gripped and squeezed my heart was the cliffhanger ending.... Gah! 😧 Just when they will get answers to all their questions... Ugh! To build up all that excitement and anticipation from the beginning, the book ends with a cliffhanger!!! 😖

Mary Ting does it again and leaves me begging for more. Arthurian legend but put a girl in it, add more magic, some draca, mix, and you get a beautifully thought out novel of finding strength from within and fighting for what is right.

However, she and the other orphans are given that privilege, only to end up in the midst of more evil than they can imagine. Idrisa is called upon by the Ladies of the Lake and given and incredible gift, one the evil king wants for his own. Idrisa and her allies find danger, intrigue, lies, and betrayal in the king's castle, but their savior may be the most unlikely person in kingdom.

Mind blown! What an amazing origin story to a legend we all know and love.
The details in the world building are amazing, I can see it all so clearly in my mind. The characters are fantastically written, instantly attaching you to some and instantly knowing some are evil to their core, and a few to keep you guessing as well. A story unlike any other with twists and turns to keep you on your toes and always stupefied to see what befalls these amazing characters. A cliff hanger that leaves you satisfied but still hungry for the next book in series. Absolute perfection, everything you could possibly want in an escape from reality.

Mary Ting has bewitched me with her amazing story. It had magic welders, beasts, and nothing is as it seems. I really couldn't believe the how much this story had going on, but it didn't ever seem like too much. I loved the story line and the characters. I loved how fast paced and the multiple povs. This story has so many twists on King Arthur, Excalibur, and Lady of the Lake. I really couldn't put this book down once I started it. Once Upon a Legend literally was made up of some of my favorite childhood stories. I really do thing Ting put a little something for everyone in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy, adventure, myths and love. I absolutely adored this book!!!
