I read the first book in this series, Last Breath, and gave it 5 stars so was really hoping that this one would continue the "5-star streak". I was a bit disappointed. Not that it was exactly a bad book...it just lacked the "reality" that the first book had. The main character, Kaylie, is not a police officer and she doesn't even have her degree yet in "criminal behavior" yet the Chief of Police calls her in to investigate the murders? Really??? My husband spent 10 years in two Florida police departments and 22 in years with a department in Michigan. When I asked him if this would ever happen, he looked at me like I had grown an extra head and then said .."oh, you're reading "cop fiction" again.". Kylie did scatterbrained things and was way too reckless when confronting possible murder suspects. I thought she had a latent death wish. I know that many authors like to draw a reading audience for their next book by leaving their current book readers with a cliff hanger...which I don't particularly like. This one has one of those...but then so did the first one. I want to know how the story that I'm currently reading ends and not having to wait sometimes a year or more for the next one.
After reading the first book, Last Breath and gave it 4 stars as I throughly enjoyed it. Therefore, I was really excited to continue reading the next book in the series and hoped it would be just as good. Sadly, I was disappointed and at times, bored. It's not a terrible book but it just lacked depth for me compared to the first book and at times, felt like there was unnecessary details that prolonged the story getting to the main point.
Kaylie is working hard in the FBI Academy to reach her goals but she is having problems with the physical part as she was never fond of exercising. Even so, she has been given an unusual chance to help in a case as there is a shortage of profilers in the state. It's a rocking start, her partner does not trust her and does not wish to work with her and the case is one of those difficult ones. She is under pressure from the personal side and also from her supervisor who is about to take her out of the case if it's not solved soon. Good story, entertaining, and it left unanswered questions for the following book.
I read this right after the first book, and it sure makes a difference. Last Chance will pull you in from the start and keep you glued to the pages! It has a lot of surprises, suspense, and some great writing. Kaylie gets pulled from the police training Academy to help a rookie detective solve a murder in Kaylie's neighborhood. Kaylie and Joshua do not get along for the most part, but do try to pull together to solve this murder.
The characters are interesting and I enjoyed the progression of growth of each one and in the different relationships in the story. The book took several turns I didn't expect. The ending was a bit anticlimactic, but wasn't bad. I wished there was a little more character development with the character that ended up being the focus at the end.
A strong female character , flawed still learning and not giving up. Life got in the way for Kaylie. What she thought was going to be a perfect marriage to the perfect guy ended up catapoling her into an entire different life.Fact paced and action packed.
Kaylie Brooks is determined to finish her training at the police academy so that she can realize her dream of becoming a profiler. An unexpected opportunity to help solve a Palm Beach murder finds her embroiled in a complex case, while facing the wrath of the Brooks' family.
Another book in the series gave more details and challenges Kaylie was facing in her new environment. The new character was interesting and am looking forward to learning about him.
Similar to the first book, lots of eye-roll inducing moments and unrealistic circumstances. It was okay, but doesn't make me want to continue reading the series.
Just... stupid. Kaylie has been at the police academy for all of what - a few weeks, and yet she's the only one available in the ENTIRE state of Florida to assist on a high profile murder case? Because she's an expert profiler?! .. even though she's never had a job in the field, hasn't used her psychology degree at all. She gets paired up with a detective, who might as well have waited in the car or back at the station for the entire case, as he essentially does nothing. Kaylie, not a cop... is the one asking the questions, chasing suspects, etc. Stated over and over, Kaylie feels she MUST solve the case. She alone. There's even a long, rambling scene where a suspect runs... the real cop chases him, but all Kaylie is focused on is how SHE can be the one to catch him, how she can get ahead of her "partner" and take the perp down. I have no interest in continuing this series, 2 books was more than enough.
