Murder on the Orient Espresso

Rate this book
When Chelsea moved back to Pine Grove, she expected relaxing afternoons on the orchard, fresh-baked apple pie, and time with family and friends. And she got all that. But what she didn't expect...

...was murder.

This time the dead body turns up at Pine Grove's new coffee shop. The adorable coffee shop, housed in an old train car, was eagerly anticipated by everyone in town. But the dead guy has tons of enemies, so there are plenty of suspects.

And Chelsea is one of them.

Chelsea's aunt Miss May is ready to help solve the mystery, just like she always is. And their bottle-blonde bestie, Teeny, never backs down from an adventure. But the local chief of police is determined to lock Chelsea up, and the killer seems determined to strike again.

Will Chelsea and the ladies solve the mystery in time? Or will Chelsea end up in jail...or worse?

Chelsea needs a new car. The old blue pickup KP happily gifted her when she returned to Pine Grove is beyond repair. Chelsea and Miss May head to the dealership to see Scott Adams for a deal on a new car. Scott Adams is cranky, rude and won't give Chelsea any trade-in value for her truck. While his business partner, Niles, is much nicer, the whole experience leaves Chelsea with bad vibes and her pick-up truck. When next Chelsea and Miss May see Scott Adams, they're with Teeny at Brian's new coffee shop for their morning Joe. Scott Adams arrives and makes a scene because Brian doesn't have Scott's muffin. Brian tries to appease Scott by giving the man free lemon bars, which Scott binge eats ... and then promptly drops dead, presumably of a heart attack. The trio of amateur sleuths aren't so sure the heart attack was natural, especially when a mysterious caller, claiming to be from the hospital, claims Scott's family had a history of heart disease. Chelsea fears the caller is the killer and if they don't figure this one out fast, the killer could come for them next! They seem to be getting nowhere in their investigation. None of the suspects will confess! They don't even have a good motive for murder quickly. Can they figure this one out before this is their last case? Meanwhile, Chelsea is reeling because her ex, Mike, has moved to town with his new fiancé and Wayne is pressuring her to pick a wedding venue a year in advance!

This was actually a decent story. It's much better than the earlier ones. I had a pretty good idea who the murderer was right away but as other suspects emerged, I wasn't 100% sure. I didn't have a solid motive, just a slightly hunch, so figuring it out was hard. I just went along with the sleuths and followed their clues. My hunch was only partially correct but I was right about the murderer. The cozy is decent too. It's winter and there's not much going on at the farm right now and Miss May is trying to figure out how to stay busy in the off season. There's some romantic comedy moments for good measure and of course Teeny's antics and her amazing cooking. I need a recipe for peanut butter pie! Nevermind a slice... or two... I want the whole thing!

Chelsea has come a long way since she first moved back to Pine Grove. She's matured so much, she hardly babbles now. She can even lie easily while investigating. She's still a bit of a scardy cat but I can't blame her for that. The patented Chelsea kick is still around and still weird. ESPECIALLY when the killer has a gun. Her personal life is looking up. She knows what she wants and is eager to marry Wayne. She handles her first encounter with Mike very well and it shows how much she has matured. I'd be teed off though, like Teeny, and feel like slapping him. Mike sounds like he's matured too - maybe- but Priscilla sounds awful.

There could be a double or triple wedding in the next book! Sensible Miss May is being wooed in a very cute way. Teeny threatens to kill Big Dan several times but she doesn't mean it. He's not a match for her. He's not too bright or talkative or sensitive. He's kind, which I gather her (is it THREE?) ex-husbands were not! We learn a lot more about her background that even Chelsea didn't know. Did you know Teeny is not her real name?

Scott Adams is a tyrant and a bully. He's horrible to his assistant, Bertha, for not bringing him decaf coffee. He's rude to Chelsea and "tells it like it is" to everyone else. They seem to appreciate his honesty at any rate. Miss May says Scott Adams is a pillar of the community and once was a basketball star. He's a different man now, changed, and completely selfish and arrogant. His behavior towards Brian, who is trying to run two shops at once, was uncalled for. Brian shouldn't have had to put up with that. If I were Chelsea, I would have called Wayne!

Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny have to pump the new coroner for intel. Aidy is a young, perky woman, not at all what they expected! She can't be bought or bribed but she does accidentally reveal one important fact- Scott's heart attack was not natural! So who murdered him? Someone very clever. Someone who was distant when Scott dropped dead, thus creating an alibi! It could be his brother, Heath, a drunk, angry mechanic. He claims he misses his brother yet he also hated his brother at the same time. They seem to have been close once but money got in the way and Scott treated his brother like dirt. That would be a good motive for murder. I would suspect Heath if Scott had been killed by a gunshot or hit over the head or pushed in the chest or something more physical. I'm not sure Heath is clever enough for poison but maybe he had help?

Scott apparently left behind an ex-wife and a kid. Rain and Owen were estranged from Scott and it sounds like Rain wanted nothing to do with her lousy ex. Scott didn't have a relationship with his kid at all which is terribly sad. The sleuths uncover more motives for murder and fear a teenager may have murdered his own father! I hope not. That would be terrible. I suspect perhaps Rain and Heath may have been working together to murder Scott, perhaps to split his money? The sleuths are thinking along the same lines. Rain seems clever enough to poison someone.

Owen is a star basketball player on the high school team. His coach, Coach G., is under suspicion for murder as well. It HAS to be him! He has the most motive of them all- so far. He seems weak and whiny yet he meant well when he did what he did. Miss May is willing to forgive him for the first offense but not for murder. It would be a shame if he did kill Scott.

There may only be one more book left in the series. I wasn't crazy about the earlier books but the last few have been better. I'll have to read the next one at some point.

This latest adventure of Chelsea, Miss May and Teenie was full of surprises and fun with a side of a few murders. The girls run into some new roadblocks to their investigations and Wayne is trying to plan a wedding. Chelsea’s ex is causing her problems too and she finally is able to work thru some of her self doubts. A very good read all around and some hints for the next book.

I love Chelsea, Ms May and of course Teeny. They really keep this story hopping. Yes, someone is murdered, but what happens when you run into your ex…who left you at the altar? And it’s complicated. Especially when there is another murder. You’ll have to read the story to find all the answers.

Chelsea thinks her old truck has finally died. So, she heads to the only car dealership in town, Adams Automotive. But when the owner, Scott Adams, is rude to her and she also observes him being rude to one of his employees, she and her aunt Miss May leave. When they are having coffee at a new local shop, Scott Adams is there also, and after a nasty conversation with the owner, he retires to a back booth. But not for long... he keels over from what appears to be a heart attack. But the ladies -- along with their best friend Teeny -- think he's been murdered, and want to investigate.

Which is exactly what the police don't want them to do. Especially Detective Wayne Hudson, Chelsea's fiancé, who wants to plan their wedding instead. Apparently, someone else doesn't want them to investigate either, when they receive a telephone call that is supposedly from a hospital doctor telling them the death was natural, as Scott had hereditary heart disease. But did he? And was the call legitimate? Of course, the only way they will know is if they investigate, right?...

To make matters worse, Chelsea's ex-fiancé Mike has moved to town with his new girlfriend Priscilla, and the last thing Chelsea wants is to see the dirtbag who left her at the altar. But she knows she can't avoid him forever, but she can try.

When the ladies start looking for people who might have had it in for Scott, they find there are plenty of suspects. But no one wants to seem to talk about him, not even his ex-wife. With little to go on, they keep plugging away, garnering what information they can from those who knew him. And when they get closer to the killer, they just might be too late...

I love this series and every time a new book comes out, I know that I must read it. I love all the characters (well, almost all; Sunny is not my favorite person -- or Chelsea's, if it comes to that). At any rate, I love the small town of Pine Grove, New York, where people live quiet lives (albeit with a side of murder now and then) and seem happy to do so. It would be delightful to visit the orchard, and pick out your own Christmas tree.

Chelsea and Miss May are not slouches in the amateur detective department, either. Teeny has more enthusiasm than actual logic, but she's fun to listen to. Between Chelsea and Miss May, they always come up with the right solution, even if it does take time to get there. But without time, what would we have to read? The plot is excellent, as always, and Chelsea is finally coming into her own, with no stuttering and actually being able to think fast when needed. She's a complicated woman, but aren't we all?

In the end, when the murderer is discovered, I figured it out a tad bit before Chelsea (but then again, I always say I read a lot of mysteries on top of watching true crime shows on TV), yet the climax is definitely worth it all, and I even read it twice. This is one of the best in the series, and highly recommended.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author and BookSprout, but this in no way influenced my review.

Another incredible page turning cozy murder mystery that sets our fun trio of sleuths, Miss May, Chelsea and the irascible Teeny! While sitting in the new cafe in town, the trio are discussing Chelsea's need for a new vehicle. Her truck is running on borrowed time. So they went to the only dealership in town, Adams Automotive owned by Scott Adams. To add to this, her ex-fiance who left her on the alter has now moved to her town with his new fiance. Stress much? They told Scott Adams, the owner, who was rude and pushy they would think about the purchase he was even ruder. While getting back in Chelsea's truck, one of the other sales people, Niles, tried to smooth things over. They left and went to the Train Car Cafe for more coffee. While talking, Scott Adams comes in and begins a tirade since they didn't have the coffee he wanted or the bun so instead, he was given a lemon bar. After he started eating the bar, he dropped from his seat and died. It turns out he was murdered so, Miss May, Chelsea and Teeny are on the case, with the clandestine help of Chelsea's fiance, Detective Wayne, since the chief, Flanagan, has it out for Chelsea. Basically, she's jealous of Chelsea marrying Wayne. We are taken very deep into the investigation with so many potential suspects and a second murder, will they girls be able to solve this one before the killer goes after them? Add to that, Wayne is trying to find an appropriate venue for their wedding in a couple of weeks. The ending is GREAT! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Murder on the Orient Espresso (ARC)

The Apple Orchard cozy mystery by author Chelsea Thomas is one of my most favorite cozy mysteries. Amateur sleuths Chelsea, her Aunt Miss May and Teeny are my absolute favorites. I especially adore Teeny for her awesome, witty replies.
Chelsea's truck is giving her trouble. Accompanied by her Aunt Miss May and Teeny, she visits Adams Automotive whose owner Scott Adams manages to infuriate them. The trio visit Train Car Coffee, a coffee shop, where in a turn of events, Scott dies. He seems to have died of natural causes, that is, a heart attack. But the popular sleuths of Pine Grove believe otherwise.
The deceased had plenty of enemies and the Police Chief seems quite intent to pin this murder on Chelsea. Someone warns her to back off the investigation. 'I loved everything about this book. Excellent plot, awesome narration, fun and loads of humor, make this book highly irresistible and can't think of taking eyes off reading even for a minute.
I highly recommend this book to all the cozy mystery lovers which would be available on Amazon on June 3, 2023.

Once again Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny find themselves investigating another murder. It seems that Scott Adams, owner of the dealership in town, died of an apparent heart attack at the Train Car Coffee. Was it from natural causes or was it murder? There are many people that don’t like him which adds to the suspect list.

Chelsea’s former fiancee’, Mike, who left her at the alter has moved to the charming small town of Pine Grove along with his new fiancee’, Priscilla. This is very awkward for Chelsea and Teeny can’t seem to help but make comments about it at the worst possible moment.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this book as the three amateur sleuths interview possible suspects.

As with the previous books in this series, there is a lot of humor that will keep you reading, wanting more and laughing out loud. Even the names of the chapters are full of whit and puns.

Although this is book nineteen in the series, it can be read alone but I enjoy reading them in order.

Enjoy the adventures of these three remarkable women as they solve another mystery.

I can hardly believe it’s already book number nineteen in this wonderful series! I have fallen in love with Chelsea, Teeny, and Miss May. After Chelsea hits a pothole in her truck, she takes it in to the local mechanic at Adams Automotive to have it fixed, but finds that Scott Adams is a huge jerk. When the trio runs into him again at Train Car Coffee, things continue to deteriorate. After the barista doesn’t have any bran muffins for Scott and substitutes lemon bars instead, Scott clutches his chest before falling down dead.

Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny are determined to solve the case and uncover who would want to kill Scott, but there is more than one possibility. Murder on the Orient Espresso is another great addition to this series and I loved reading it. As usual, Chelsea Thomas has created a delicious plot and peppered the story with wonderful characters. I can’t wait to read book number twenty.

Okay, don't mess with people's coffee, that is just really rude. Our heroine would never do that, but not everyone agrees, so it looks like she is going to have to solve this one for her own sake.

This is book nineteen in the series, but it is written as a standalone. All the essentials are covered early on.

This is a clean cozy mystery filled with plenty of humor and all the little elements you would expect from a cozy mystery. If you are looking for a gritty realistic action book with hot romance, this is not it. But if you like small towns, interesting characters and the occasional witty banter, this one should do the trick. The story is well written with an easy to follow plot, but that does not mean an easy to solve mystery. There are enough twists and turns during the investigation to keep the reader guessing until the end and only a little bit of drama. Overall it was a pleasant and relaxing read.

Highly recommended.

I like the title of book 19 in the Apple Orchard Cozy Mystery series--Murder on the Orient Expresso. The sleuthing trio of Chelsea, her aunt Miss May (Mabel Thomas), and their friend Teeny (Caroline), have another murder to solve in Pine Grove, New York. Scott Adams of Adams Automotive, recently died at the new business in town-- Train Car Coffee. Does his death have something to do with him wanting the board to approve an emergency authorization to replace the high school basketball coach mid-season? Is his ex-wife, son, or brother somehow involved? While the women are out looking for clues, Chelsea's balding ex, Mike Gherkin and his new fiance (Priscilla) have bought a house in Pine Grove. Talk about an uncomfortable situation for Chelsea to have to deal with! I really enjoy the major and minor characters in this small town. Detective Wayne Hudson, Big Dan, and John Wentworth are interesting and patient boyfriends. The author makes it easy to visualize the businesses that the women frequent in the small town. I'd be happy if this series lasted for several more books!

Murder on the Orient Espresso is part of a series of books by Chelsea Thomas, but it can be read on its own without a problem. This is classic "cozy mystery" set in a charming town with interesting characters that all have a back story. The 3 self-proclaimed detectives go behind the backs of the local police department to beat them at their own game. This book is no different from the others in the series. There's a mysterious death & lots of suspects. Chelsea, Miss May, & Teeny have a unique relationship that is fun & funny. They are out to prove that the apparent fatal heart attack of Scott Adams is actually a murder. He had a caustic personality that created many shaky relationships. The 3 detectives go through many investigations & interviews, sometimes dangerous, to get the killer. All the Apple Orchard Cozy Mysteries are creative, thoughtful, & great ways to relax with a good book. Enjoy all these mysteries.

The gang takes up the hunt for a killer when the victim happens to drop dead right in front of them! Who did it and why? How did they murder someone without being at the scene of the crime? Not to worry, our trio of sleuths are on the case.

Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny are up to their eyeballs in suspects, and snow, it is winter in New York after all. Oh, and Chelsea’s ex-fiancé has the nerve to move (with his NEW fiancé) to Pine Grove!

Read this fast, fun mystery as it takes you from a car dealership to ice cream (with lots of sprinkles) and coffee shops (also with lots of sprinkles) then on to the high school basketball game. How are they all connected? You have to read the book to find out.

I love the crazy antic of Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny! I. This book we catch up with familiar townspeople and get introduced to the younger residents and their parents! Worst of all Chelsea’s ex who stood her up at the alter is now living in Pine Grove with his new fiancée!
Amidst all the new people the gang solves not one but 2 murders. Dan even throws an epic party to celebrate the ladies! I love that Wayne is the enthusiastic one planning the wedding and not Chelsea! Teeny is her usual funny self back with another new sensational dish for Grandma’s! I enjoyed this book and am anxiously awaiting the last book in the series. I have read all the books in this series and when u think it isn’t possible each book is better then the previous one. I highly recommend this book, this author and this series!.

Wow, I can’t believe this is book 19 in the series, another great adventure with Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny! I so enjoy these characters, including Teeny’s fractured sayings and love of sprinkles! Chelsea hits a large pothole with her truck, ‘ole blue, which does some major damage. So she takes it to Adams Automotive where the owner, Scott Adams, is pretty rude to her. The ladies run across Scott again a little later at Train Car Coffee, where he proceeds to pitch a fit because they are out of his regular bran muffins. The shop owner comps him a couple of lemon bars, but as he’s eating them, he clutches his chest and falls down dead. Is it a heart attack or murder? The sleuths have their work cut out for them this time, as Scott has so many enemies there are plenty of suspects! Another murder in Pine Grove is bad enough, but the man who left Chelsea at the altar has moved to town.

Another installment of Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny adventures of investigating a murder. The dead man had no small number of people who heartily detested him, so there's plenty of sleuthing ahead.

Chelsea and the gang are at it again, solving a murder in the quiet town of Pine Grove. This time a rude car dealer keel's over while enjoying his cup of joe in the Train Car Cafe. They soon discover that there's a bevy of suspects who really couldn't stand the man but who really did it? Chelsea, with friends and fiance in tow, navigates the humorous trail from corpse to conclusion while steering clear of her ex-fiance with his new fiancee and the over-focused chief of police. Will she successfully clear herself and prevent another murder? You'll just have to read this cozy mystery to the end to find out! This is a fun little cozy and I enjoyed it.

Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny are back again. This time Chelsea takes her truck to Adams Automotive for some repair work and the owner, Scott Adams is rude to her. Later, at the Train Car Coffee, the three ladies witness him being rude to the owner, who gives him some free lemon bars. While eating the lemon bars, he collapses; dead. Was it natural or murder? The chief of polices suspects Chelsea; but there are plenty of people that didn’t like Scott. Can Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny solve the case before Chelsea gets arrested or another murder is committed? Enjoy the usual antics while the team solves the case.

An unexpected murder while getting their morning coffee puts Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny right back in the middle of another murder mystery. The local car dealership co-owner dies mysteriously at the new coffee shop. First ruled a heart attack it then becomes apparent foul play was involved. The suspects are many and while they all have a reason to want Scott Adams gone Chelsea and Miss May aren’t able to pinpoint any of them for the murder. An unexpected revelation about the local high school basketball coach finally leads the ladies to figure out why Scott was murdered and by who. Looks like Chelsea's truck isn't the only thing that is dying in this installment when the arrogant co-owner that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way dies in a coffee shop of all places.

With her ex-fiance Mike in town with his new one and her current fiance Wayne rather having her wedding plan than be involved in another murder investigation, Chelsea has her hands full trying to weed out suspects and juggle her personal life.

Another Apple Orchard winner from Thomas that is making me hungry for more.

Who Killed Scott Adams ? . . .

Chelsea is back in Pine Grove and has another murder to investigate! She had an encounter with a rude car dealer. The man, Scott Adams, dies at the Train Car Coffee Shop, assumptions being that he died of natural causes from a heart attack. But Chelsea has her doubts and she, Miss May and Teeny begin to investigate. There are many suspects to talk to, but none seem to want to give her any information. Will Chelsea follow the clues and find the killer before the Chief of Police locks her up?

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. And the humor will have the reader chuckling all the way to the end.

Missed Ms. May, Chelsea and Teeny and very happy to read about their adventures again. In this story, Chelsea is in desperate need of a new vehicle. Her beloved Big blue was past any further restorations. Will Chelsea find a car or truck she will love as much as her old truck; or will the killer stop killing long enough for them to be caught. It is a race, new vehicle, or new killer, which will it be? Highly recommend this series to all mystery lovers who love a good story and several hearty laughs.

Wow! First book I have read in this series and what an amazing story. When Scott dies in the coffee shop of an apparent heart attack, the crime-sleuthing trio of Miss May, Teeny and Chelsea have their doubts about the cause of death. So many suspects in this page-turning story. I sort of guessed who it was, not long before the murderer was hinted at. You can read this as a stand-alone book.

I have read most of the books in this series but this one was one of my favorites. The storyline was engaging and the mystery kept me guessing until the end. The regulars in the series were fun, funny, and quirky enough to be recognizable and the supporting players fit right in with the Series denizens. I missed KP and the orchard bake shop but I’m looking forward to them showing up in the next installment.

A good cozy that had me guessing to the end.
I did wonder if the girls weren't a bit sloppy in their sleuthing--- snow on the ground, walking to the back of the house--didn't they think the police would question their tracks? Was Heath's death murder or medical?
It was a good story and there were several surprises at the end. I did enjoy reading it and I would recommend it.

Entertaining cozy mystery.

Another entertaining and fun book following the adventures of the terrific trio - Chelsea, Miss May and Teenie. As always, they investigate a murder with reckless abandon and comfort food while getting themselves in and out of trouble. Lots of humour and brilliant writing make this a book not to miss.

I read this book as part of an advance reader team and am providing my honest opinion.
