It could have been very good but too many inconsistencies for my tastes.
The hero and the heroine are one and only and childhood sweethearts, during prom night the heroine sees him with one of their friends and finds out she’s pregnant. She leaves the town as fast as a rocket and never comes back for eight years. Truly. Really. I swear. Without even having a talk with him and that what first left me dumbfounded. I mean, her boyfriend of forever is talking with a friend and said friend says she’s pregnant and she immediately thinks it’s the hero’s ? While the hero and the friend tries to tell her it’s not what you think? I don’t know. Really? Where’s the trust he deserved? Not once did he tell her it was his child! She never gave him the chance to explain and disappeared like she never was there. What kind of dumb behavior is this. So, the supposed big secret was imo no secret at all. But the worse comes later. Since the hero can’t find the heroine he accepts to be a father for the child who basically made him lose the woman he loved. wtf? I thought there was a big secret like the kid was his father’s or some mob boss so the mother would have been protected only by him and he felt duty bound to take care of the child but nope. The kid is some bloke’s who is never explained who he is, and ow bar friend is not threatened in any way. Btw, her mother knowing she was pregnant, already left, so why the hero took care of this fuggin kid well, it’s a mystery to me. The heroine comes back in town with a friend of hers, after eight years, and she’s still a mess, and after some time the hero eventually spills the beans. I understand he was angry because the heroine left him without giving him a chance to explain, I would be too, but why did he keep the secret with all the town? Is it fair that everyone thinks the heroine has been cheated on and the child is the hero’s ? I hated this. It has no sense, he could have helped the friend in any other ways and there were other friends of theirs who were ready to help her, so why did it have to be him who was the only one who was in a relationship? Imo the hero should have never have accepted to be a father for a child who caused him to lose the heroine, especially since he was not his child, and going on with the pretense seemed to me a lack of respect and consideration towards the heroine. Surely if he had been clear and everyone in town knew the child was not his, the heroine would have known it much sooner and they would have never been separated for all those years. There’s also some kind of mob boss who could endanger the heroines friend, but we never know what happened to that kind of story. I think it’s in another book. I honestly didn’t understand all this mess, why did ow want to hide her sons fathers name? Why did the hero accept to be a father and not some other friend? Did he try to look for the heroine or did he simply let her go after she left town? The book had potential but it was mostly wasted. One thing is very good, safety. Both were celibate.
