I lost him once. I won’t let him be taken from me again without a fight.
The voice on the other end of the line is one I’d given up all hope of ever hearing again…Devin.
As a boy, I loved him like a brother. As a man, my feelings are far from brotherly. Despite the years apart, everything in me aches to hold him, touch him, taste him. Is it possible he feels the same?
Right now, he’s hurting, and I swore I’d help. He needs me, but as I watch over him, I feel so helpless. Drugs have stolen so much of his life, and as they work their way out of his system, I vow never to let anyone or anything hurt him again.
If only that was a promise I could keep.
But Devin’s past comes back with a vengeance, and this time, I’m not going to sit back and wait. This time, I’ll do whatever it takes to get him back where he belongs.
In my arms and in my bed. Forever.

When I read the first book I make comment in the review that there was way too much background to get through before the story really started...but it was the first book and we hadn't been introduced to any of the character as of yet...so I was wanted to give the second book, Seeking Sanctuary a try hoping to meet some of the folks that we had met before, plus learn a new couple's story... and I was not disappointed. Romeo Alexander has written an emotional and exciting story that will hook you from the start. It was easy to become immersed in the story and root for Devin and Chase to overcome Devin's years of drug abuse and find their way together. Chase and Devin were best friends, but then Devin left town and the two didn't have any contact with each other until Devin at the end of his rope and the lowest point of his life knew he had to get help or die...he called Chase. It was short notice, but Chase was there, without question. wasn't easy, seeing Devin a shadow of his former self due to drug abuse...but Chase put him in the car and took him back to Fairlake...his home and now it will be Devin's home, with him. Both guys were likable, each in his own way and together they take on the fight against drugs. This was not easy and didn't happen overnight...but it was portrayed realistically by the author. It was in no way sugar coated, and just like in real life, there were ups and downs. There was such a strong emotional bond between Chace and Devin. As a reader, you could feel the tension between them, but the author never let us lose track of the love. Towards the end of the story the author kicked up the heat and suspense. Actually, I had waited for what happened to happen about mid-away through the story and just when i thought that Devin was lucky and was going to dodge that bullet and then...Wow.
I porażający.
To też niełatwa i emocjonalna książka.
I'm not sure what I was expecting from this book but I very much appreciated the clear Content Warnings inside.
This let me know from the start that the romance in this narrative would be coupled with serious subjects and things wouldn't have a smooth ride.
I still loved seeing Bennett's ex friend with benefits Chase get his happy ending - after a whole load of troubles - with his childhood best friend Devin.
"Seeking Sanctuary" is an easy five-star read or listen. I listened to the audiobook, so that's what I'll be reviewing today. Please see the blurb for a detailed summary of the plot. BE SURE TO READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS and know that there are mentions of SA, DV, murder, detailed scenes of drug abuse, and on-page violence.
First things first, we have to talk about the narrator. I feel like Michael Dean can be a bit polarizing due to his inflection and pacing. He often draws out words and shifts his tone in a very dramatic way, even when the scene does not necessarily call for drama. To be honest, I had a really hard time listening to the first book I purchased with him as the narrator. But over time, his voice has grown on me. Plus, the way he changes his tone between characters during dialog makes the conversations easier to follow. Definitely listen to a sample before you buy the audiobook!
On to the story itself. I had a hard time putting this one down once I finally got into it! This is a grumpy/sunshine(ish), hurt/comfort, second chance MM romance. We start off with Devin hitting rock bottom and reaching out to his long-ignored former best friend Chase. Devin has gone from one trauma to another his whole life and is now trying to dig himself out of a hole. Chase has been dealing with his mother's death and the sudden abandonment of his best friend for years when Devin comes crashing back into his life. I liked how realistic their relationship felt. There was no insta-love or lust (which, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of). The build-up to their romantic relationship was gradual and kept pace with them building trust with one another again.
The characters were beautifully fleshed out and easy to root for. Except for Bennett, but that might just be me. Devin and Chase's chemistry was believable, and the steam was...delicious. This book is not for minors or the faint of heart.
Overall, I would recommend this book to MM readers who love a good friends-to-strangers-to-friends-to-lovers romance.
“Chase, Chase, Help Me”. “Devin, where are you”, “I’m on my way”.
As soon as he heard that plea, there was no way Chase wouldn’t rush to his childhood friend. Both of them had grown up in a Trailer Park and suffered horrors, even in their home, especially Devin.
It was Chase who had made life tolerable for Devin, their feelings for each other got them through all sorts of trauma. But Devin still ran away from his friend and left with another guy. Chase still hurts.
Now years later, when Chase finds Devin in an alleyway being beaten up he just dives in and rescues his friend and takes him to his home. Shocked by his physical state he sets out to fix him up and save him from his demons and his addiction.
I loved the relationship between Chase and Devin, their childhood friendship had grown to much more for each of them by the time their finished High School, but was never spoken about or acted on.
Chase had never forgotten his friend, and when he brings him home to heal he vows to never let him go again. Until someone from Devin’s past come knocking on Chase’s door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not your average MM Romance, it’s a gritty story of hardship in childhood, parental neglect and abuse, alcohol and drug addiction. But it is also a story of childhood friendship that stands the test of the hard times, separation and finding each other again in times of desperate need.
So, I really love Chase. Devin - I can’t find anything about him to like. He’s selfish. And as someone who comes from a family full of addicts, the author gets it so wrong on a couple of fronts.
1. You should never detox unless you are under the supervision of a medical professional. Chase was not qualified to help Devin ween off of hardcore drugs. 2. I understand not wanting to go to rehab but thinking you can do it without any medical or psychological help is just asking for trouble. 3. Devin drinking alcohol - making excuses that it’s different from the drugs he took - so many things wrong with this thought process. His father was an alcoholic. He should know better - Chase should know better. 4. Devin and Chase having sex within hours of Devin being released from the hospital for dehydration and diarrhea- seriously?
And then the last hour…it was just…not anything I could take seriously and it also made me hate Devin even more.
Listen, I get this is fiction but there’s just too much irresponsibility from the author.
Not sure what I want to read right now (reading slump mixed with mild seasonal depression). However, Romeo Alexander's "Men of Fairlake" has been on my TBR list for a while now, so I figured I'd start there. The third novel is "Seeking Sanctuary." ["I lost him once. I won’t let him be taken from me again without a fight.
I avoided reading this one for a bit, only because I knew how hard it would be. From the previous two books, to the sheer agony of the trigger warnings below. Then when I did start it, I couldn't stop.
This one was haaaard emotionally and mentally. These aren't particularly my triggers, but they were descriptive, on the page, and in depth.
But their hard times and their struggles made their love story all the more beautiful and emotional and strong. They had to fight their demons, both new and old, separately and together. This novel wasn't slow burn (the spice was strong), but those nightmares came to life near the third act really will leave you feeling hallow.
Trigger Warnings: explicit violence, abduction, drug abuse (vivid descriptions), withdrawal (vivid descriptions), implicit rape, domestic violence, child abuse, rape, on-page killing, and more
4.5 stars Please take note of the trigger warnings in this book, such as drug abuse, violence, mentions of rape, child abuse, etc. Due to the above, this book has a heavier, darker vibe, it is a heartwrenching, emotional h*ll that the MC's have to wade through before there can be hope, acceptance, healing, peace, a long awaited, enduring love, and HEA. Thankfully this book is well written, and therefore there are quite a few laughs, good natured grumbles, and good friends that help balance out the darkness. Devin is desperate and has reached his lowest point when he reaches out to his childhood best friend for help. Chase, the grumbly man with the huge heart, races to get Devin despite not having heard from him in years, and unaware of just what he is about to be dealing with. The author does a good job of touching on some of the struggles and demons Devin will battle while trying to get sober and eventually comes to terms with the reasons behind his using in the first place. During this time, Chase is beginning to see glimpses of the man he used to know and could never forget, and is starting to realize that some of the feelings he had at that time, ran deeper than he thought. Devin and Chase deepen their connection, even as there is a lot of emotional upheal in their lives, eventually acknowledging their feelings of love towards one another, and beginning to work on moving forward. At this point, Devin's past returns, bringing danger, suspense, and violence with him. The result is another awakening for Devin, who realizes he needs some professional help to help his sobriety and his mental health, and causing him to take some necessary time to heal. The epilogue is nice, but for me, I would have liked to see a bit more of Devin and Chase being happy together. Overall, this was a captivating story that I would recommend as long as readers are aware of the heaviness and darkness throughout this book, as well as the possible triggers.
What a struggle Chase was a brilliant mechanic, well a very grumpy mechanic. Everyone knew him and he was less intimidating now he had been a tear away when he was younger but he had lost his mum when he was young. But now he kept his head down got the job done. But when he gets a phone call from his childhood best friend Devin asking for help. Chase knew he was gonna go and get Devin. Devin had broke Chase’s heart when he left. It had been the worst decision of his life because he’s then boyfriend was a drug dealer who got him hooked on drugs and then even pimped him out. But he had finally had enough of the abuse he knew he had to get out of there so he rang Chase for help. but of course he had to have one more high before Chase arrived. Chase could not believe the state of his best friend, Once he got him in the car he blacked out for 17 hours he slept and woke in Chase’s house. Chase had gone through his bag to get the dirty clothes out to wash and that is when he found a very large bag of Oxi Wow can these two get Devin off drugs?? Also when they finally admit to their feelings for each other they are in such a good relationship supporting each other talking, keeping communication going great passion but then something happens that puts Devin’s life in danger can he be saved?? I’ve got to say I really struggled getting into this book which is a first for me with a Romeo Alexander book. And I can’t put my finger on what it is I like the storyline I like the passion the connection and the struggles that they’ve both been through . But if I’m being honest, for me this isn’t the best book I’ve read by Romeo.
Chase has had feelings for Devin for a long time which went from brotherly to something more. But Devin let his drug demons steal so much of his life away when he ran off with his boyfriend. Now he is ready to ask for help for his addiction and calls Chase whom he trusts. Without hesitation, Chase is there for him. Devin starts to clean up and get the drugs out of his system, but then his past comes back to destroy his efforts.
Cop friends Bennett and Jesse stopped by the garage to tease Chase about the betting pool Bennett started for how long it would take him to get the vein on Chase’s head to stand out. As they chatted, a call came on their radio that they all recognized. Mrs. Jensen, Chase’s neighbor, reported 3 men leaving Chase’s address and dragging Devin who was barefoot and appeared beaten up as they pushed him into a black Lexus. And Chase’s front door was broken. Chase had been out of the house for less than an hour when this happened. Bennett tried to reassure him they would get Devin back as they joined the pursuit. And when Chase spotted a black Lexus down the street, he leaped into his vehicle to quickly follow as he called Bennett and told him where he had seen the car. As Chase got closer, the driver of the Lexus lost control, side-swiping Chase and ending up on the grass before hitting a tree. Head soaked with blood from being shot during the pursuit, Chase ran toward the crashed Lexus as Devin fought off his kidnapper. Chase dove into the fight as he recognized the kidnapper who just pulled out his gun and aimed at him! Will Chase survive what happens next? Or is it too late to keep his promise to fight for Devin and never give him up again?
The pain and struggle the author lets us feel in this story line is real. This struggle with addiction is no easy task, and relapses are common. Was Chase’s love strong enough to make the difference this time? Grab your copy and see where the story takes us.
Have I mentioned that I love the Men of Fairlake series? So I was really looking forward to this book and I was not disappointed. Romeo Alexander has once again written an emotinal and exciting story that had me hooked from the start. He has a wonderful writing style that allowed me as a listener to become immersed in the story very quickly. Chase and Devin were best friends when Devin left town and the two didn't hear from each other for years. When Devin needs help on short notice, Chase is there, of course. And it's not easy, because Devin is a shadow of his former self due to drug abuse. I really liked both of these guys, they are likable, each in their own way and they take on the fight against drugs. This is tough and was portrayed realistically by the author and was not angsty either. And just like in real life, there were ups and downs. What I also really liked was the strong emotional bond between the two. As a reader, you could feel the tension between them and it was super to watch Chase and Devin's relationship grow stronger and stronger. Towards the end, the author kicked it up a notch in terms of suspense. Wow. A very entertaining and enjoyable book.
Michael Dean is a fantastic narrator who did another great job here. He gave each character an individual voice that I as a listener could immediately relate to, and he does an incredible job of portraying the emotions of the protagonists, bringing the book to life. I'm really looking forward to the next volume!
One of the best books is one that leaves a mark on you long after you've closed the last page. And this one has definitely gathered countless emotions that cannot be forgotten. All the beautiful and the ugly, the rejection and the doubts, the fear and pain, the love and forgiveness, blend together in shards that cut so deep, they scar the soul for life but in the open gapping wound blossom the seeds of new hope and a chance of new life. Someone like Devin - recovering addict - know how much in blood and flesh costs a chance like this, a thread of new life stretched so thin, it's almost transparent in its delicate fragility. For as long as he could remember, his life is running, hiding and learning the art of being invisible to be able to survive. Until one day that isn't enough and he has to jump blindly in the dark, put the last crumbs of trust in his best friend and believe that would be enough not to crash and burn. And this is the story of Devin and Chase - like an ugly duckling turning into a breathtaking swan, their bond heals, develops and grows in strength and depth.
Chase and Devin were childhood best friends, the one constant good thing in their lives, both with traumatic baggage from their youth. When Devin left for a new life with his boyfriend, Chase was left alone for years. But when he gets a call for help from Devin from out of the blue, Chase answered the call immediately, bringing Devin home, and being the support he needed to fight his demons and work toward a better life. The love the two had always had for each other was still there, and it evolved into more for both men. All did not go smoothly, and Devin’s past caught up with him, creating more challenges, but eventually they got their HEA.
This is one of my favorite authors, and this book is as good as the others. The characters are well developed and complex, the things that Devin went through physically were realistic and fit perfectly with family members who went through the same things. Plot kept me going to find out how it all worked out in one sitting. An enjoyable read.
🖤Hurt comfort with a side of action 🖤Childhood best friends to lovers 🖤Mutual pining 🖤Grumpy/Grumpy 🖤Size difference 🖤Morally grey characters 🖤Addiction, withdrawal, recovery 🖤Forced proximity 🖤Small town
Wow, what a ride! I was waiting for Chase and Devin's story since book 1 and it was even more exciting than expected for me. Chase has been my favourite character in this series from the beginning! I really loved it because not only it has all my favourite romance tropes: hurt comfort, childhood best friends, grumpy MCs with a good heart, size difference, forced proximity... 🤩
But also in addition to the beautiful romance between two grumpy soulmates, it has some of the elements I love the most in Romeo's stories: the amazing character development of a broken MC, some breathtaking action scenes and thrilling moments.
It's a rollercoaster of so many emotions. From the heartbreaking journey of Devin's addiction, of which we have some glimpse on page, to the reconciliation with Chase and some super sweet flashback, to the shocking withdrawal and their domestic moments, some super h🔥t scenes, to some thrilling and emotional twists, their hea is hard earned.
Chase intrigued me when he appeared in the first book in the series and I wanted to see him get his HEA. His friendship with Bennett hooked me in and getting glimpses of his future in that book were tantalising. Devin's history was so heartbreaking and watching him struggle hurt, just as it did seeing Robin slowly come back to life in Handle With Care after all the horrors he'd been subjected to. Together, their reunion and subsequent daily life dealing with all the problems that addiction and withdrawal threw their way drew me in. There were also obviously feelings between them that needed to be addressed and the two threads were woven together to produce a powerful book. Bennett is my favourite character of the series and, as Chase's close friend, he appears here and I couldn't have loved him more for how important his role was in their story. Romeo treats all these difficult subjects with respect and sensitivity and I find myself drawn in to his characters and their worlds, unable to look away even through the tears I can feel welling up.
This wasn't an easy story to digest while reading, but it's probably one of the more realistic love stories you'll ever read. It dealt with drug use, abusive relationships and severe self esteem issues. However, it also dealt with a love so deep that you'd do anything for the person just to keep them safe and in your life. It was good getting a few cameos from the couples in the first two books. We get a lot of Bennett in this book, although he does appear to be the glue in this little town of Fairlake. I enjoyed seeing him in the line of duty in this book especially when it was such a benefit to our main couple, Dev and Chase. Loved the teaser at the end, as I truly thought this was going to close the series. But I see there's at least one more story set in this little Colorado town. Which is good because I don't feel ready to leave the town yet and all the zany characters who live there.
Chase and Devin’s story is one with depth and baggage and subject matter that isn’t easy to navigate, and all and all it makes for a moving read experience. There are highs and lows, darkness and painful experiences, hope and healing and a process that is both about a relationship and about more than that as well— it’s hard to describe without spoilers, but well worth experiencing. I’d recommend reading the blurb for an overview of the content: this story deals with violence, drug use, and kidnapping along with a friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort, second chance romance that takes shape in challenging circumstances and is ultimately, I think, stronger for them.
I liked the book and the message it portrays about 2 men who struggle with addiction or anger. My biggest problem with the book is that chase literally keeps comparing devin to Bennett inside and out of bed. Then everyone they’re intimate together chase will somehow compare Devin to past partners he has had. In real life this is probably one of the reasons why people are hesitant about individuals who have lots of partners because no matter what your only as good as the last few partners your compared to. The romance was rushed I mean they both loved each other since they were kids could’ve built up to it. In my opinion I think chase and Bennett would’ve been better together.
This is a great book to read. This book is about a man names Chase who stayed in Fairlake and became a mechanic. While his best friend Devin left town after graduation with David and has not heard from him in years. Devin calls one day for help and Chase runs to get him. Chase is helping Devin to ween off of the drugs that he has been on for years. Devin wants to get clean. After being clean for three months, and in a good mood Devin answers the door not looking to make sure it was Chase, it was not it was David back to drag him away. Will Devin get away from David again????? What will Chae do when he finds out Devin has been kidnapped?????.
Chase might be grumpy but when it comes to those he loves, he is the best. Devin has been his best friend and secret love his whole life but he took off running away with a man he knew would hurt Devin in the end. Devin comes back an addict and running from the man who abused him in every horrible way. This story takes you through through the ringer with drug addiction nd the struggle with getting clean, years of running from a past that always seems to catch up along with physical, mental and sexual abuse but also showing compassion, regret, friendship, sacrifice and most importantly Love. You don't want to miss this story even though you think you already know it from the first 2 books in the series. You don't!!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This book is not the romance I was hoping for. "Seeking Sanctuary" is a romance, but it's most about the struggle of an addict to overcome drugs. The two men were childhood friends when one of them decide to move away. He gets hooked on dugs and calls his hometown friends to come get him. Then the struggle begins for both of them. This story does have the Happy ending for the two men and there are sex scenes, so I'd say this is for 18+. I personally couldn't get interested in the story and struggled to finish it.
Devin knew he loved Chase in school but nothing happened and he thought that Chase was straight so he left with David. David got him hooked on drugs and used him as well as abused him, finally had enough and called Chase to come get him. Devin refused rehab trying to get clean on his own so Chase helped him get clean and a job. David found him finally and did quite a bit to him before taking off with him, Chase saw the car go pass the garage he worked at so he started after them since the cops went a different direction, they got caught and Devin rescued. Good book!.
This was so real to me that I could picture everything in my mind playing like a movie. So real like the feeling of grass under my feet when I'm barefoot in a field. The emotions were raw and overwhelming but in the best way. This showed the good, the bad, and the ugly sides one might see when dealing with an addict. This is without a shadow of a doubt one of my favorite books of 2023 to date. Truly a hurt/comfort book and it will be gracing my bookcase with the rest of the books when book four is completed.
Romeo is really coming for the feels in this series!! Each book has hit me in the feels in different ways. I have been so excited for Chase and Devon’s story and it did not disappoint! I am always a sucker for best friends to lovers, so another reason I have loved this series lol My heart hurt for Devon and Chase as they dealt with their own demons and each others demons. And my heart rejoiced as both characters experienced great growth which is a hallmark of Romeo’s story telling. Devon and Chase’s hea is hard won, but worth it.
Excellent story highly recommend!
Be mindful of the TW list: violence, drug abuse, withdrawal, implied sexual assault, domestic abuse and abuse of a child.
"This is a dream I thought I’d given up on, come true.”
I really loved this book. I absolutely loved both Devin and Chase. They were very well developed characters, and Devin's struggles with his addiction were very realistically written. I loved that for all of Chase's grumblings about being abandoned and ignored, as soon as Devin called him for help, he dropped everything to go to him. Devin's fight with his demons isn't only drug related though, and when his past catches up with him, can Chase get to him in time? The story was compelling with danger and suspense. I liked the supporting characters, and the chemistry between Chase and Devin was scorching! I was hooked! 5 stars.
This was a tougher story than most.Ddrugs and violence lead.ing to recovery and acceptance.
Chase and Devin, like others in this series were best friends, then one was gone, lost, but never forgotten. Devin calls Chase to save him. An addict trying to make things better, but that is difficult when all you want is your next fix to go numb.
Devin has been in love with his "straight" friend Chase since forever, Chase, not all that straight. realized after Devin left, that he felt the same way.
Ups, downs, the psychotic ex returning, drugs, car chase, gun shots, terror, love all explode in this story. And Bennett and Isaiah try to help in anyway they can.
3.5 stars and I rounded up. Unfortunately I had a lot of similar experiences with drug addiction that affects the ones' you love. It is not easy (as portrayed in this book) and very often ends up with the addict beyond help and the loved one trying to help with as much horror as the addict himself. I applaud this author for giving a fairly realistic view of what loving an addict entails.
Unfortunately,most of these stories don't end as well as this one did, and a lot of the story is just boring repeat, rinse, repeat and I have to admit this one got a little boring at times (the nature of making a novel). But kudos to anyone who tries to take on an addicts pain, God bless you.
I absolutely loved this book! I thought that with the trigger warnings that this book would be harder for me to get through, but the love that chase and devin have for each other makes this book completely worth it. The support that they give each other warms my heart as they both work through their shared issues and trauma. And while I hate that devin feels he needs to spend some time away from chase in the end, I totally understand and feels that it makes him appreciate the life that he has with Devin that much more upon his return. So yes I loved this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!!
The books we’ve all being waiting to happen in this series. Chase and Devin have been talked about in a round about way since the first in this series. Even with triggers and the little bit of back story you get from the other books, I felt unprepared. My heart was shattered for most of the first 75% of the book.
This also the definition of sunshine and grumpy love story! So cute!.
