With two of the Five compromised, I had no choice but to go on the offensive. Hiding out — even if I was pretty much in plain sight these days — in the tiny corner of peace we’d carved for ourselves in the Pacific Northwest was no longer an option.
But the person or persons responsible for dragging me away from the life I’d fought to build, to protect? Well, they would regret every moment that I had to divert my attention toward them and away from what I truly wanted. They would regret forcing me to once again become the cold-hearted, sociopathic, genetically constructed magical abomination they’d bred and trained me to be.
The Collective was already done.
I’d destroyed them more than eight years ago.
But apparently, some of those who’d survived now needed a reminder of their demise.
When it was done, I would walk away with everything that was mine to have and to hold. And what I couldn’t outright destroy? I would absorb or claim for myself.
Because Emma Johnson was stronger than Amp5 had ever been.
Endings and Empathy is the sixth and final book in the Amplifier Series, which is set in the same universe as the Dowser, Oracle, Reconstructionist, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series.
Meghan Ciana Doidge writes tales of true love conquering all, even death. Though sometimes the love is elusive, the vampires and werewolves come out to play in the daylight, and bloody mayhem ensues.
Oh Amp5/Emma, how I'm going to miss you! This last book is Doidge's Amplifier series (although #27 in the overall world series) is a great conclusion. All of the books are excellent, but I admit I had a hard time getting into this one at the beginning trying to remember who's who and what and why. This series must be read in order. Highly recommend anything Doidge writes.
This book is all mashed into what feels like one big scene. When I read the previous short leading up to this, I knew this would be a battle, but I didn't realize it would take up the entirety of the last book in the series.
Emma is going to save the rest of the five, of course. It doesn't matter who captured them or how dangerous it is, the whole team is going to get back together again. It was a little strange how we ended up here, what with Bee and all her weird baggage, but that was the least of my concerns. There is a lot of danger in this book, but in true Emma fashion, she bulldozes her way through it all. We get the final piece in the Collective (I think?) and round out the family that Emma has built for herself and her friends.
While, yes, there is action and adventure and rescue and horrible things, what ended up standing out most to me is the almost epilogue we get. Emma and co settling in, becoming what constitutes "normal" for them, and giving us a little glimpse into what might just be the rest of their relatively uneventful lives. As the last book in this series, it definitely checks all the boxes, tying up loose ends to varying degrees of satisfaction.
I've taken my time reading this book, as it's the last book in the series.
But I'm hoping , like Jade, we'll meet again, in a book somewhere down the line.
A rescue mission leads Emma back into the grasp of The Chemist, one of the Collective.
She realises that one of her team/family is the one who took the other two family members, the only way someone could capture them.
Emma gives herself up and is whisked away, having all manner of things done to her.
But, whilst her magic starts to override the drugs being pumped into her, she sees a small child, Six.
This leads to Emma fighting to take him with her, when she's finally rescued.
But he has a nasty kick to him, only Emma can help with.
The ending to this book is perfect.
I LOVE this series and it's wonderful characters, that have gone from, well automatons, killing for the Collective. To people learning to live and love themselves and others.
I love this author and I have every story in my library she has produced.
I enjoy all of her characters, the ones I would like to live near, and the ones I would not want to meet, and feel a bit relieved when they die or can no longer cause trouble.
Her world has drawn me in since the first cup cake was offered and I am always ready for another story about any of the characters she introduced me to or anyone I have yet to meet.
It all ends here (in a good way). The final book in the Amplifier series brings it all to a head. Facing unexpected enemies and finding family. Emma is determined to finish this once and for all. Confronting one of the main creators of the Five, brings her up against past and a future generation of the Collectives work. An amazing finish to an amazing series that left me a blubbering mess at the end. 5 stars without a doubt.
An incredible ending to a series that took us on a wild ride! This book closes out Emma’s emotional, violent love story in a way only MCD can write. Truly perfect, wrapped in a beautiful bow. And the ending… squeee! Pretty sure Meghan is magic because her words weave a spell that won’t let you go. This is a must read series.
A bittersweet read given this is the end of an excellent series. I enjoyed this book and loved the happy ending with Six joining the family. Lots of action packed scenes but also some uncomfortable ones that I had to skip, however overall an enjoyable book. Highly recommend.
I was so torn with this book. I desperately wanted to read to find out what would happen with the characters I have grown to love. Also, I didn't want the story to end because I am so engaged with this world and the characters feel like family. I will miss them so much. The ending was so hopeful and in many ways it was a new beginning.
Although this may be the last of the series, I don’t think the characters will disappear. It’s nice how Meghan introduces her characters throughout her other Books. I enjoyed all the situations floating around encouraging each character. Family, or keep your friends close and enemies closer? Greatest ending.
Emma is possibly my favorite heroine in MCD's Adept Universe. Her growth through the series culminates in this final book perfectly. Usually I'm sad and disappointed when a series ends, but this book makes that impossible. Thank you Meghan for giving Emma, Aidan, Christopher, & Samantha their perfect ending in a real way.
I know the power Emma holds, but this time I was fearful most of the book. Meghan kept me guessing, never knowing what was around the corner. It was wonderful having the team together. Happy Tears and some spice mixed in makes for another amazing book. Now, I need to go make some tea and have some gingersnaps.
This was a great ending to the series. We didn't get an out and out happy ending but that was OK. If anything this book proved that anything you throw at Emma and Aiden and their family will be taken care of, mostly with extreme prejudice. My major gripe with the story would be that we didn't get as much of Emma and Aiden as I have gotten used to over the course of the series.
This is a great ending to the series, and wonderful realization of a fantasy complex family with all the slightly disruptable relatives to complete the series. The combat sequences were a bit long for me in the beginning of the book, but the other scenes paced well. Excellent series - read it and you'll have the urge for afternoon tea as well!
Just finished and now I am sad because I want MORE! As with all MCD’s stories, I was completely immersed in that world…making it hard to resurface into the mundane…yet I am so happy with the “endings”.
The best amplifier book by far. What a beautiful and challenging story brought to its best conclusion. Sad to see the end of her series but happy to let Emma get some breathing room to just exist.
I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the others in this series. I’m not sure what it was that didn’t quite do it for me. I think I enjoy reading about Emma dealing with life and home than going on some mission.
There are more big surprises in this book. In the hunt for Bee the rest of the Five find more than they bargained for and lose something precious. I had to read the last chapter early to make sure it turned out okay
A superb ending to an amazing series. The power of love and family, choice and autonomy all wrapped with magic, action, sadness and all the annoyance of siblings. I'm very sad to see this series ending. The growth of Emma and her family has been a joy to read.
Yes I like this series but I was not the biggest fan of this one. I hated the main story. Hate books that make the Fmc have no say/choice and hep prisner. Just hate that vibe . But overall love the series
An amazing ending, …… always so well written, and executed. I will miss all of these characters. I trust Meghan to give us a peek of them every once in a while.
Wow. Blown away by the ending to this series. I want to see more of Emma and Jade together because that is an explosive friendship waiting to happen. I love this so much.
Loved it. So sad that this is the last book of Emma - as far as I know. But I understand her arc is finished. Still feels like saying goodbye to a good friend.
