As summer settles over Airlie Falls, Texas, baker Rosie Hart is gearing up for the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations. Orders are coming in fast, but when someone calls in an order for a mud cake, Rosie feels uneasy. After a series of confusing phone calls, she comes to the chilling conclusion that the term ‘mud cake’ is in fact code for a ‘hit’—someone is ordering a murder!
As the dough for her Apple Custard Brioche Bread rises, so does Rosie’s anxiety. This isn’t like any of the cases she’s solved before. This time she has to save someone, but first she has to discover exactly who she’s supposed to be saving—and more importantly, who wants that person dead.
With her commitment to the town’s week-long festivities, trying to control her nonagenarian friends who’ve just discovered the home shopping network, determining if a long-lost child has indeed resurfaced, and not to mention an Elvis impersonator on every corner, Rosie’s wondering if she can really unmask the person with murderous intent before they take matters into their own hands.
I am loving this series so much and I think this one is the best one yet, this time Rosie gets a phone call requesting a mud cake but is it for a mud cake or something more? Come along as Rosie works through many clues with the help of her friends to uncover a killer and more.
It is coming up to the fourth of July celebrations in Airlie Falls and there is a lot of baking to be done for Rosie but one order in particular for a mud cake seems more than that and when she meets the receiver of the cake things move along quickly, when that person is hit on the head with Frank investigating, it appears that the mud cake order is for a “hit” and Rosie is determined to keep the victim safe.
This one had my head turning in all directions as there appears to be more than one victim and so many suspects that Rosie is working overtime with working things through and keeping one would be victim safe, her fiancé Jonah and best friend Midge step up to spend as much time with Rosie as possible to keep her safe these are dangerous times with what appears to be a lot of money involved as Rosie investigates the Clymont family.
Of course her friends at Riverbend are up to no good this time they have found the shopping channel but they are always a help to Rosie with information and with so many activities for Fourth of July including an Elvis impersonation contest, things are really getting hectic, will Rosie find the killer or killers in time before someone else loses their life.
I loved this one, I laughed, I cheered them on as I read this one in one sitting there was no way I was putting it down till Rosie worked it all out because I didn’t and the ending oh it bought tears to my eyes so beautiful and fitting, I can’t wait for the next book. I do highly recommend this book and series it is fabulous.
My thanks to the publisher Tule for my digital copy to read and review.
Dial M For Mudcake is another delightful cozy mystery by Kaz Delaney. I received an arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review. This is the 6th book in the Hart of Texas Murder Mysteries. As the book begins, we are close to the big Fourth of July celebration in Arlie Falls Texas. The story features Rosie Hart who has a successful dessert business. Rosie receives an odd phone call about having her make a mud cake. The caller’s voice is distorted and they argue over the cost of the cake. He finally agrees to her normal price of $15 and reluctantly gives her a first name. Then he requests that the cake be delivered to a deserted location to a woman wearing red. Rosie delivers the cake to a woman who is subsequently attacked. She gathers information from the lady and shares all about what has happened with her best friend Midge, her fiancé Jonas and his mom as well as the chief of police she has assisted in the past.
Rosie learns that the woman stands to inherit a large amount of money when her elderly aunt passes away. She starts asking about the family members and their stories from people she knows. Then, they go to the aunt’s house to talk to her and discover she is dead and it appears to be foul play. They meet her housekeeper who provides additional information. Rosie is told to always have someone with her when she is investigating for her safety. It was realized that the mud cake request was really a request for a hit made on the woman she met. Rosie and her friends along with the police chief start reviewing all the suspects and are unable to determine who killed the aunt and tried to kill the other lady. As they work through the clues and realize the killer, it becomes a race to protect the innocent people.
As in past books, Kaz has created quite an interesting mystery to solve with the addition of delicious recipes. Each time I think I know who is the killer, something else happens and I know I’m wrong. The characters are quirky and fun to read about. Rosie is such an interesting and loyal character. She and Jonas and Midge get along so well and are all very likable. It is quite comforting to pick up the books and see all your well known and well liked cast of characters. I also enjoy seeing how Arlie Falls celebrates each of the holidays. This is another 5 star book I highly recommend.
I’ve really enjoyed Kaz Delaney’s Hart of Texas series and Dial M For Mud Cake has been a lovely addition to the set. Set in quaint Airlie Falls, Texas, the stories are filled with the warmth and support of a small community. Dropping a food parcel or a baked treat into a neighbour in need is just as prevalent here as the gossip that seems to be a key part of every small town. Considering the number of murders Rosie Hart has managed to solve, it’s actually a wonder that the people she lives with are so nice, and yet they are. Thiss the story unfolds the town’s preparations for the Fourth of July public holiday well under way. I loved reading about the food stalls, parade floats and contests that were to be held. While all these preparations are going on, however, Rosie has a muder to solve and a second murder to prevent. There were so many possible suspects and so many reasons that any one of them could have been responsible that it was a wonder she succeeded in her task. I always try to work out who the killer is before Rosie, but this time I was flummoxed. The story has me guessing to the end.
If someone calls you trying to order a mud cake… hang up!
I really enjoyed the beginning. I laughed out loud.
There was a LOT going on in this story. If you read enough cozy mysteries there always seems to be moment when the amateur sleuth goes off by themselves and gets into trouble. Not in this one. Rosie has a fantastic support system and she was smart enough to not evade them. Jonah was more present, taking time away from work to accompany Rosie as she search for information.
The aunties are always a hoot! Never let it be said that just because you are up in age that you cannot be cunning. The table lamp incident was hilarious.
At times, it felt like too many characters in a scene. There was not as much baking in this one with Rosie’s awesome assistant Allie keeping things running while Rosie was out detecting.
There was a subplot or two, too many in my opinion but I am glad that the author didn’t leave/forget them at the end.
Dial M for Mud Cake is part of The Hart of Texas Murder Mysteries by Kaz Delaney which just keeps getting better and better. I am not sure if a “mud cake” is a fictional term that is used in this story only but it is one that is new to me. I do know that it made for an extremely interesting story.
Baker Rosie Hart has never baked up anything like this order is for but she is certainly on the case to prevent it from happening. A bit different from the previous mysteries this is still a fun cozy read. The crew are all there in rare form this July with Elvis impersonators joining in the story too. Rosie has her hands full with a murder to solve before it happens. Read today for pure entertaining escapism.
4.5 Stars An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved the sixth book in the Hart of Texas Murder Mysteries series by Kaz. Rosie Hart and her friends are again plunged into a mystery when Rosie receives a call from a man ordering a mud cake which happens to be code for someone ordering a hit on someone! As Rosie and her friends dig deeper into the mystery it became harder to tear myself away. I love this series and each mystery which is played out. The small town of Airlie Falls, Texas feels like home and it’s always so much fun to reacquaint myself with the locals. Thanks to Tule Publishing and Kaz Delaney for sharing this wonderful story.
This is book 6 in the Hart of Texas series. Rosie and the bakery staff are preparing for the 4th of July celebration in their small Texas town when she gets a strange phone call ordering a mud cake. It turns out this is and old time code for ordering a murder. With her intrepid group of seniors anxious to help prevent a murder, not solve one the gang starts investigating. I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series and I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had. The group has some fun characters.
A fun mystery with all kinds of suspects mingling together and adding suspense to solving the case. Rosie the baker with an inquisitive mind. Jonah, her steadfast boyfriend. Midge, her journalism roommate. Frank, the trustworthy sheriff. All the relatives of the Clymont family are considered in on or creators of the crimes in order to inherit a pot full of money. A really cute book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I am honestly not much of a mystery reader but I really enjoyed this book. It was such an entertaining read. I look forward to reading more by this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A special request for a mud cake baked by Rosie leads to attempted murder, murder, family secrets rife with greed, stolen fortunes, secret babies, and a deadly killer determined to gain ill gotten gains at any cost. The gang is back and it’s nice to see them all working together to save a friend. Frank finally gets to see the whiteboard!!
