I've always crushed on my brother's straight best friend. But when I start tutoring him, an undeniable spark ignites between us. Can I win his heart?
Axel Sandstrom
I’m the lead guitar player in a punk-pop band and I get hit on a lot. But I’ve got a big problem—a crush on my older brother’s best friend, Remy. Of course, he’s straight. So instead of having him, I’ve become the king of hookups. I’m used to hiding my feelings behind teasing and innuendo. But that only drives him further away from me. When Remy decides to go back to school, my brother asks me to tutor him. After spending time alone with him, it’s pretty obvious he’s not as straight as he says he is.
Remy Hall
Axel makes me feel things. Tingly things. But he’s also obnoxious and my best friend’s younger brother. I should stay away, except that I need him to tutor me. During our tutoring sessions it’s impossible for me to deny my attraction to him. But the bigger issue, is my all-consuming fear of being close to people. After the deaths of my younger brother and my dad, I don't want to get close to anyone. But Axel makes me want to try. He might have the conviction to yank me back to him, kicking and screaming, as I’m about to fall off the edge.
Come Closer to Me is the second book in the Rock U series and is part of the Mesa Boys universe. This novel features bisexual awakening, hurt/comfort, and a rocker in love with his brother’s best friend. It guarantees an HEA and has no cliffhangers. It features a bad boy who goes after what he wants, and a man who’s hiding his attraction to men and shies away from love. Each book features a different couple and can be read as a standalone or as part of the series in order.
Christie Gordon is the author of steamy, heartfelt gay romance novels that explore the emotional journey of men discovering themselves and finding love. It all started when she stumbled upon MM fanfiction by accident—and let's just say, it was love at first read. Inspired by the genre's mix of passion and complexity, Christie transitioned from reading about men in love to writing her own stories. After taking fiction writing classes at a local community college, she published her first MM romance novel in 2009 with a small press, and she’s never looked back. When she’s not writing, Christie watches boys-love dramas, creates digital art, or is serenaded by her snoring one-eyed rescue pug. A graduate of both Electrical Engineering (BS) and Business Administration (MBA), she spends her "day job" navigating the high-tech world, but her heart belongs to the characters who live in her books. Christie currently resides in the Phoenix metro area, though she’s also lived in California’s Bay Area and Minnesota (which probably explains her deep love of pumpkin spiced latte coffees and hockey). She’s also the proud mother of two young-adult sons who provide plenty of material for stories—usually in the form of chaotic shenanigans. But no matter what, Christie’s always up for a new adventure, whether it's on the page or in the real world.
This is book 2 in the Rock U series and this book is about Axel and Remy.
Axel is in a band, he plays guitar and he’s very much gay, out and proud. He’s in love with his brothers best friend but he knows nothing will happen between them but it don’t stop him messing with him and trying to charm him with his flirty ways! When he offers to help Remy with his college work, the best he was hopeful for was that they could at least be friends, but being around Remy stirred up his feelings more and he’s starting to feel like Remy might not be as straight as he thought.
Remy, dead set on being straight (we won’t mention the fumble he had with a guy in the past!) he feels uncomfortable when he’s around Axel because he’s always trying to hit on him and it’s starting to give him strange feelings. But Remy is not cut out for loving anyone, his past trauma has seen to that, but when a freak accident happens will he finally realise what he’s about to loose.
Great 2nd book about coming out, found family, coming to terms with past trauma and seeking the help needed to be healthy. Lots of spice which I’m here for! Loved the relationship they developed, looking forward to the next book and secretly hoping we get an MM book for Leo!!

2024 AUDIOBOOK (10h42m), Narrated by Finnley Cole: 4.5 stars 1st person, past tense, dual POV Axel Sandstrom (23), senior at ASU studying business with a concentration on business analytics Remy Hall (27), security installation, studying business with a concentration on business analytics at ASU part-time This narrator continues to do an excellent job narrating the series. The voices for Remy and Axel were subtly different, Remy was softer while Axel was a little gravelier, which I thought suited their characters. I did find them similar enough that if I had left the book and come back to it I would have to double check whose chapter I was reading, unlike with Devin/Brandon. I love the emotion he imbues into the characters, especially during intense scenes and had me tearing up at certain points. I listened at 1.15x for reasons and it sounded great, I might even try that again since slower speeds sometimes allow my mind to wander.
I was given an Audible code and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
2023 ORIGINAL REVIEW: Note: There is a short prequel to this series called The Perfect Front Man (Rock U #0.5) that contains background for this story and insight into Axel's character (it is also told from his POV). While it isn't necessary to read to enjoy this book, I highly recommend doing so. On a Different Mission (Rock U #1) is a good read as well, but does not need to be read first, though it will help you enjoy the Rock U world a little more.
Axel Sandstrom has been in love with his older brother's best friend, Remy Hall, pretty much since the moment he realized he was gay. Nothing can ever come of it though because Remy is straight and would never give him a second glance. So, Axel teases Remy with sexually charged double-entendres every chance he gets and has one-night stands with men that look an awful lot like his grey-eyed, wavy brown-haired crush. Remy is oblivious to the real reason Axel teases him, but wishes he'd stop because the responding flutters in his stomach are confusing. Even if he's never really had a girlfriend before, he knows he likes girls, though there was that one time... In either case he's pretty sure his traumatic childhood losses mean he'll never fall in love, with anyone.
I was pretty excited to read Axel's story since I had read the prequel and was dying for him to get his HEA. He's such a great and self-assured character. I love how he lives life to the fullest, single-mindedly going for what he wants and he wants Remy. When Remy was off-limits, he respected that, in his own way, but the moment there was hope he was all in. Remy was a little more difficult to get to know as a character, both because this is our first real introduction to him as a character and because he's not nearly as boisterous and confident as Axel. He's had to work through some trauma and he's naturally more reserved. I would have enjoyed a little more of an awakening from his POV because it kind of felt like they got together out of nowhere, but that kind of suits him too.
I loved that Axel said those three little words first and that there was no expectation to have them returned or awkwardness when Remy couldn't say them back. I loved the scenes when the band was performing - I have to go add a bunch of old favourites to my Spotify playlist now, lol. I was pleasantly surprised that the fallout from the forth quarter twist didn't result in Remy spiraling too badly and that it galvanized him into realizing the depth of his feeling for Axel. This was a pretty perfect read for me.
I can't wait to read Caleb and the rest of the guys' stories (I hope Samuel gets his own HEA at some point, even tangentially).
I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.
To be honest I don't really like the author's 'voice' and to be very honest I'm basically skimming the book at this point. The dialogue just feels ...wooden and stiff. I cannot pin point it but the MC's feel much younger and inexperienced than what they apparently are or should be. They almost sound like teenage girls😐 The dramatic scenes (shooting/hospital/recovery) were pretty detailed but not much better written. Perhaps this book was early days writing for the author. *Many beers 🍺 were sipped in this book. On many pages and in almost every discussion. Editing and proof reading would have caught all this sipping 😊
After reading the first book I was so looking forward to axels story with Remy and seeing how he would manage this. Axel is an amazing character and the ending twist was just mmmm.. I want to have a story about Silas ...

Anyway, if you want a book soooo hot that will make you melt on your siege, sweet, hot, and at the same time a little dark, I just suggest you dive into this one. Where you will discover a character who is slowly advancing in his new path of his bisexuality and a character who finally his dream becomes reality and will have to try to control his emotions more slowly in order not to scare his Lover-Boy.
I was pessimistic about this story. Although this is my favorite trope, this author tends to set up rather dark subjects, and I don't often read this darker genre. But the author surprised me and made me discover that her art is to tell a story that is simply beautiful and yes with a dark twist, but that adds to the story, that makes it more real, more vulnerable too, but so much more lovable.
This story is delectable from beginning to end. The chemistry is at a insane level. It's soooo hot in here. And so well written, too. I fell in love with all of these characters who finally show themselves in a more vulnerable, real state and prove to us that their dynamic is resistant to all the bad things. A strong bond that connects them to each other and holds them together.
I love their strong family side, but I would have liked to have more involvement from Rémi's sister on several subjects (his bisexuality, his struggle with love and the people around him, his worst nightmares coming true, etc) especially after knowing that she had studied psychology. (I think some phone calls or texts between siblings would have been perfect, but no she was not there).
I also have a hard time understanding why putting all the action in the last few chapters. I would have taken a lot more of the story from there. How did they all get out with their ptsd? The physical healing but also the emotional side. The struggle to live with his brother, etc.
Although what I would have liked was not there, the rest was more than present. The chemistry, the emotional outbursts, the camaraderie, the bonds between them, the understandable family, full of love and amazing friendship and brother.
I recommend it to everyone. Don't hesitate. Just grab your own copy!

Book: Come closer to me by Christie Gordon (28/04/2023).
Come closer to me is the second book in the Rock U series and features how Axel Sandstrom, a college senior and the guitar player of Knot Me finds his HEA with Remington Hall, an older guy who don't like to get closer to people because he's afraid of lose them for death (caused by past similar traumas) and he's brother best friend.
The way how it started with Axel provoking and Remy running from it, the study sessions (a little bit intimate to me, i confess), the way they built they own lovestory in they awkward way and how Remy let Axel slowly in into is heart and break all the walls he built around that and when he noticed he loved Axel as much as Axel loves him were my highlights in the story, of course without forget all the snarky, sexy, funny, tense and romantic moment they stared together.😊
The book is good in delve in all the rock band vibes, college too, all the tension and exciting moment between the characters, how Remy's insurance are described and treated and that scene on the guitar store (was a master trick but please Christie don't play with my emotions like this again 😭) that lock me in the book and wrapped and raced my heart while it was rolling makes this the perfect read for the MM college boyband romance lovers.
The 23-chapter narrative plus an epilogue is narrated in the first person and gives us a great understanding of its situations and events in its 258 pages so you will not have a problem on understand nothing.
My first college boyband MM read and my only criticism is that Christie almost killed me in the last 50 pages and made me almost cry and now I'm almost crying cuz I need more of my babies but I'm really excited for Caleb's book.
In the terms of saying what I would like to see more I'm going to say nothing cuz the book to me is perfect the way it is, and maybe i should start definitely now Devin and Brandon's story and I'm almost jumping in the walls thinking in who's gonna be Silas love interest. 😭💔
(I'm going to stop writing because this review is turning out to be longer than expected and I don't want to risk giving away a spoiler).
Then Come closer to me is the perfect book for you if you like college boyband MM romance, a brother's best friend tropes, a little bit of angst, a relationship with two guys who strangely fit so well, a dash of drama, some hot provocations between the MCs and how they can be the best thing to each other even when they think they are a not compatible match.

Wow this is a fantastic read. This is the second book in the Rock U series and we met another band member called Axel. For me I would say read the first book in the series to get the best out of this one but you can read it alone you can but for me glad I read the first book.
Axel is a guitar player in up-and-coming band and he has had the biggest crush on his older brothers best friend Remy, But the problem that he has is that Remy is straight. But that doesn’t stop him from teasing him, flirting and talking in double meanings. Remi’s life hasn’t been easy he lost his brother and he lost his dad when he was younger but without knowing it, his father had changed his whole outlook on life. He was a firefighter and he would come home with some distressing stories about who he had saved that day or hadn’t saved. And that made him very scared to get close to people. Yes he has his best friend Leo who he trusted 100% and Axel who had grown up with both of them. When Remy goes back to school he starts to have a problem with one subject and who would’ve had this class before and Aced it? yeah that would be Axel and thankfully he had offered to tutor him on a Wednesday night. But that meant they were alone, what would happen?? Axel made him feel jittery, tingly and he didn’t understand it. That is until they kiss and Remy has to accept what he is feeling. It’s obvious Axel’s got feelings for him and he shows it every day Right there is so much more going on in this story but I just don’t want to give a lot away. I have got to say I don’t think anyone could dislike Axel. The way he feels about Remy is what every person hopes of finding in a partner he is adorable one second then the next a pain in the butt but in a way that is extremely lovable. He’s got so much to prove with Remi he needs reassurance he needs support and that’s exactly what he gets. Learning that he is bisexual has opened a whole New World to learn about, but when he accepts what he feels for Axel he goes for it he wants everything that Axel wants. The passion that they share is just off the charts. They have such a strong connection they make an adorable couple really enjoyed this read I received an advance reading copy and this is me leaving my honest review.
The long awaited book has finally arrived! Since reading the prologue to the series I couldn’t wait for their story and the author did not disappoint!
Our boy Axel has always had a crush on Remy his brother’s best friend but now it has evolved into a profound love but Remy is straight or is he…?
Tutoring lessons leads to so much more but Remy has built so many walls around his heart- Will Axel be able to break them down brick by brick….?
I loved the teasing and flirting Axel used to camouflage his feelings towards Remy. I loved how accepting Remy was of his attraction to a man and everything he wanted to try- that is how they discovered their kinks…. I loved how the possessiveness and jealousy was the catalyst to a move being made…
The support of the characters of the band members and Axel’s brother was so endearing not to mention the closeness of their families…
Too many tragedies in his life has caused Remy not to get too close to anybody except his mother, sister and best friend but perhaps a near tragedy will be the catalyst to end his phobia…
I love all books written by the talented Christie Gordon and always look forward to be entertained with an engaging storyline and wonderful characters!
I voluntarily received an ARC for my honest review.
I love reading into a series following characters introduced in an earlier book, especially ones such as Axel. He made such an impression in Devin's book (Rock U #1) that it's great that he was given what he deserved as a love story. Axel even mentions his crush on Remy to Devin in that book.
Axel has loved his brother's best friend, Remy --who he had assumed was always straight--, for a good half decade or more, and Remy never had a clue. Although he had his own feelings of general discomfort about Axel, Remy thought Axel's silly taunts and antics toward him were based on animosity, not attraction. When the truth is revealed, Remy reevaluates his feelings, and their romance grows swiftly from there. Many spicy scenes bring the couple together as Remy appreciates his newly understood sexuality and the growing love he shares with Axel. I love how the story plays out for our MCs. Throughout most of the story, there is some light angst throughout from anxiety about the relationship on one side or the other, but nothing too drastic. Remy needs to emotionally work through several tragic memories from his past that hinder his overall ease and comfort about their relationship.
*Minor spoiler* There is no third act breakup, but the chain of events that does occur in the third act is very intense and stress-inducing. It will be a definite trigger for anyone who struggles with guns and what they can do.
Audiobook Update: Finley Cole provides a sweet contrast between the two MCs to easily follow in the story. He's able to easily bring the story to life using the author's descriptions. His voicing is clear and consistent for each of the characters as the stories continue. The intense scenes in the third act are far more tense when processed through audiobook. When reading to yourself, you inject your own inflection and feelings to an intense situation. In audiobook form, you have no control over the way the narrator reads through the situation. Finley Cole did a fantastic job navigating through the events of the story and led us through to its resolution.
I received this audiobook as an ARC and am providing my (delayed) honest opinion.
I’ve been waiting for Axel and Remy’s book since we got a teaser for it a few months ago. Christie’s boys did not disappoint. I loved so much about this book that trying to figure out how to summarize it was a bit of a challenge!
Remy has identified as straight, even with that one time with a guy at the frat house always floating around his head. With the painful losses of his father and brother front and center in his mind, Remy has no desire to find love because if he doesn’t love someone, it won’t hurt if he loses them. All of his best friend’s brother’s teasing is getting to Remy in more ways than one and he’s starting to wonder if that time with the frat bro wasn’t just a fluke. Axel has identified as gay, crushing on his brother Leo’s best friend for years, even going as far as to hooking up with guys who look like Remy. Axel has loved Remy for so long that he has no desire to fall in love with anyone else that isn’t Remy. Since he doesn’t think he has a chance with him, it seems hookups will be his forever go-to.
After some tense times together where Axel helps Remy with one of his courses and Remy goes to see Axel’s band only to come face-to-face with one of Axel’s past lookalike-to-Remy hookups, the two men decide to explore this attraction. Axel has loved Remy forever, but Remy tells Axel he needs more time. When a dangerous situation threatens to take Axel’s life, will Remy wake up and smell the red roses or will it be too late for him to profess his undying love to Axel?
Axel has loved Remy, his brother Leo’s best friend, for years, expressing it and keeping Remy aware of him through constant teasing. Remy is straight, has never picked up on the reason for the teasing, just feeling constant annoyance each time Axel does it. When Remy has difficulty with a class he is taking, Leo suggests letting Axel tutor him since he has had the same class previously. Frustrated, Remy gives in to the tutoring, discovering that Axel is different in this situation, and is really helping him. He also is discovering an unexpected attraction to Axel, one which he questions and tries to clarify in his own mind. Due to past trauma from the death of his father and brother, Remy is fearful of getting close to someone then losing them, so he has never been in a relationship. Axel has never had a relationship, either, since he has loved Remy since he was in high school. As the two try to navigate growing feelings for each other while facing their reservations and fears, there is that promise of a future together, helping them through an unexpected challenge. The character development of Remy and Axel continue throughout the book as we learn more about each one as the story progresses. Both characters are complex and seem very realistic in their feelings and reactions. The situation also seems true to life, with questioning of sexuality as unexpected attractions occur in the book. Supporting characters also play a large part in the story, setting up for further books about those complex characters, also. This was an enjoyable read, keeping me interested in finding out what comes next and how Remy would face his fear of possible loss in order to embrace his love for Axel. Read and reviewed as part of an ARC for the author.
I've been waiting for Axel's book ever since I read the short story The Perfect Front Man. And luckily, his story didn't disappoint!
Axel is a cheerful, fun young man who likes to enjoy life. He's been helplessly in love with Remy, his brother's best friend, forever, but he knew it was impossible. After all, Remy was straight, right? But that didn't stop him from teasing him every chance he got, as he consoled himself with hookups that turned out to be very much like Remy, while he focused on his band and his studies.
Remy did not have it easy, having suffered two great losses very young, which made him avoid all kinds of emotional attachments which caused that his relationships with the women he dated were unsuccessful. The great fear of his, the trauma that followed him everywhere, was losing someone else. He considered himself to be straight, despite having briefly experimented with another man and that the sex with women he dated was not really satisfying, something he believed was due to said emotional distance. But he couldn't explain why Axel's teasings made him feel nervous, getting under his skin, making him "feel". Something that scared him.
But Remy needed Axel's help to pass some courses and every time they were together it was more difficult for him to deny the attraction he felt for him, beginning to explore that side that was asleep inside him.
Things happened, things that forced him to face his fears and traumas and decide if it was worth continuing to deny his feelings for Axel, instead of fully enjoying them.
I was given an advanced copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
Come Closer to Me is book 2 in the Rock U series. It’s a brother’s best friend mm romance. Axel is smart, gorgeous and confident. He’s a guitarist in the band Knot Me. He has friends and hook ups. But he loves his brother’s best friend, Remy. Remy is handsome, responsible and resilient. But he’s suffering from traumatic loss of his brother and father, making it nearly impossible to become attached to someone romantically for fear of losing them. Axel teases Remy with sexual innuendos, trying to flirt and express his feelings, even though Remy is straight. Remy is uncomfortable because Axel’s teasing makes him have butterflies in his stomach. But the more time Remy and Axel spend together, the more confused Remy is and the more confident Axel is of his feelings. This sweet story is a beautiful example of how love can conquer fears. It’s emotional and heartfelt. There are some spicy first times and some romance, with feelings never before experienced. The storyline leads you through a building of a relationship, where fears and past traumas are obstacles. I loved Axel. He was confident and flirty, but ultimately caring for and patient with the love of his life. Remy had my heart breaking for him and all he had dealt with and what continues to be a barrier to him finding love. The characters are all so complex, with issues that are compelling. The love they show for each other makes them all so lovable and has me rooting all of their HEAs. Come Closer to Me is such a great read and I can’t wait to read on in the series!
Axel was a character I wanted to get to know since he was mentioned in the first book in this series. This book had a few different tropes; Age gap, brother's best friend, bi awakening, and first times with a man.
Axel is part of an up and coming band who's been in love with his brother's best friend for years. He never thought that Remy would ever spare him a glance, he teased Remy but nothing will come from it, right?
Remy is Leo's best friend, and Axel is Leo's brother. When Remy starts taking a class that he doesn't quite understand, Axel offers to tutor him. That is the moment these two realize that maybe Remy isn't as straight as he thought he was.
I think this book was really well written, the background descriptions was really cool! You could almost see Axel and his band rocking out on stage with how much detail were in those scenes. I enjoyed the side characters; Caleb, Milo, Silas, we got to see Devin and Brandon, along with Kaiden and Jaimie. It was cool 'seeing' them again in this book. The strong friendship that Axel has with Caleb and Silas comes through in this book, especially after what they went through together only made their friendship stronger.
I appreciate the fact that Christie didn't completely rush these characters, cause I think if she rushed Remy's character it wouldn't have done him justice. He needed to take things slowly, even though Axel wanted to step on the gas. I was laughing at Axel's actions, he had no qualms about being boisterous and loud about who he wants and what he likes.
It was awesome to read a book about characters who come out to their family and their family was completely supportive, it was refreshing to read about that outcome.
I do want to note that if mentions of shootings and recollection of deaths is triggering for you, I recommend proceeding with caution. This book is low angst, sweet and steamy.
*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
This is the second in a series but can easily be read as a standalone, there is a little crossover with the first book but it can be easily followed on its' own.
This is Axel and Remy's story, we met both in the first book, Remy briefly as he's Axel's brother's best friend and roommate, and Axel's crush for years. When I started the book, I wasn't really sure that I liked Axel all that much, he pretty much wound Remy up constantly, even when he was asked to stop, just to get a rise out of him. It got quite annoying, honestly. He did grow on me as the story went on though, and I got to know him better. He's pretty much full-on though, and was all in with Remy right from the start, pushing perhaps a little too hard at times.
This is Remy's first relationship with a man, and I did like he and Axel together once they got there. Remy was understandably reluctant at first because he's got a lot to deal with in his past, and coming out to everyone on top of that. I get that Axel didn't want to hide and these two just worked so well together, they brought balance to each other and there was a fair amount of heat there too. It was all going so well, and I was around 2/3 in but had a real sense of foreboding as it was going too well almost.
Once I got past the initial part with Axel and Remy and into the bones of the story, I really enjoyed this and look forward to more in this world.
I’m enjoying this series by Christie Gordon. It has just the right amount of angst, humor, and feelz. I also enjoy the trope of best friend’s brother. Mixed in with a bit of unrequited love.
Axel has a problem. He’s in love with his brother’s best friend. They’ve all known each other since childhood – Remy and Leo used to let Axel hang out and, as he matured, Axel discovered both that he liked guys and that he really liked Remy. Problem? Remy’s straight and not interested in his best friend’s little brother.
Leo asks Axel to tutor Remy in a class Remy’s already failed once. Axel steps up and does it. Happily. Then…things develop into more. Remy feels like he needs to hide the relationship from everyone which bothers Axel. Everything gets resolved eventually, though. There’s more drama, for sure, much as there was in the first book. That also got resolved and I got my HEA. I will say I found way less pop-punk band in this book than the previous. I did get to see Devin and Brandon, though, so that made my heart happy.
Finnley Cole is doing a great job narrating this series and I’m thoroughly enjoying his performances. Can’t wait for the next one.
In book 1 of the series, you get a hint of Axel's crush on his brother's best friend. In "Come Closer to Me" you get a better idea of Axel's crush for Remy and what is holding Remy back from it all.
Remy's past is the catalyst of why he avoids relationships and getting close to people. While Axel avoids real relationships since he can't be with the one he truly cares about. Without spoiling too much, one thing that cracked me up was, well, let's just say Axel had a specific requirement when choosing his hooks ups. So brilliant and nutty at the same time!
This book had a little bit of everything: anxiety, angst, denial, acceptance, even suspense and drama. I like how this book unfolded. The only thing I wish it had was a better resolve for Remy by getting counseling help for him too. I felt like there was a big build up for him to seek help as to why he was the way that he was, but instead it took an unexpected event for him to be better. Other than that, I enjoyed this book a lot. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 stars The Rock U series is a spin-off of the Mesa Boys series, and this second book of the series is pretty good. It was a pretty good story overall, especially since the MCs were less immature than they often were in the Mesa Boys series. They were still awkward with each other at first-- especially since Axel has loved Remy a long time while Remy is coming to terms with being bisexual, and neither has had a real relationship before-- and it still held a level of insta-love, as Axel confessed his love after a few weeks of them dating and Remy confessed his when they'd been dating a month. As was the case for the first book of this series, the interior monologues of these MCs weren't as awkward (maybe cringey is a better word) or dramatic as the interior monologues of most of the MCs of the guys in the Mesa Boys series. In any case, I have hope that this series will feel less like a YA romance series masquerading as an adult romance series unlike the Mesa Boys series. It's not just the presence of open-door sex scenes that separate YA romance from adult romance for me but also how the characters think and behave. So, I'll have to see how the series goes from here, but so far, so good on feeling like I'm reading about men in their twenties rather than high schoolers.
"After you, Lover Boy" has now become my go-to phrase when interacting with my husband after reading this second installment in the Rock U series. It comes up in all the right places in this one, and is kind of the straw that stirs the drink. Great takeaway.
Axel has been jonesing for his best friend's younger brother Remy for as long as he can remember. We spend the first 85% of the book establishing/defining their eventual relationship. It's fun to read how things evolve around the two guy's issues. And you wonder if it's going to be Samuel or Chrissy/Bubbles who causes the angst in the last 15%. Turns out that we get a surprising plot twist that nobody saw coming that lays the groundwork for a nice HEA.
I have to say that of all of Chrstie's books, the smexy quotient is really good this time. And one side-note. We all know how focused Christie is on cars. In gay culture, tops drive Jeeps and bottoms drive Honda sedans. So Axel and Remy have to switch cars, girl.
Love this book and love this series. Can't wait for the next one. Four Stars!
This is an extremely slow burn with angsts for days but the payoff.....So worth it!!
I am going to be a little vague with this review because it's such a well crafted and heartfelt story that I would hate to spoil it. I really adored this though, I was such a fan of both characters and the struggle for each of them was real. There are some trigger inducing subjects in this book, for me they simply added that much more to this story, these character and this relationship even though some won't agree. I am such a sucker for unrequited love, hurt/comfort and all of the other little tropes sprinkled throughout this read. The relationship development between Axel and Remy was fantastic, from the friendship to the first times and everything in between, I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed. The more I read Christie Gordon the more I adore the stories this author writes, they keep getting better and better.
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
Come Closer to Me is a good coming out, older-brother's-best-friend story. It's full of hot times and Axel is constantly teasing and flirting with Remy who he thinks is straight. There's an OMG scene near the end that I didn't see coming but maybe I should have?
This is the second book in the series and the second book I've read by Christie Gordon. It's also the second book I've listened to performed by Finnley Cole. The narrator's voice was pleasant to listen to and the pacing was good. The only problem I had was keeping track of which character was speaking. The book is first person POV with the chapters alternating between characters. I couldn't tell any difference in the voices for each character which caused me to have to restart a chapter at times.
A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
Sometimes, you have to just ask! Axel is the lead guitarist in his band. He gets approached by men and women groupies a lot. But, he's strictly gay. He has been crushing on older brother, Leo's best friend Remy since they were younger. He crushed on Remy secretly because Remy is straight. He treats Remy like a 10yo crushing on the young girl in his class. Remy, notices but is uncertain of his reaction, so he avoids Axel. When Remy returns to school, he realizes he needs help in a class and Axel becomes his tutor. As they get to know each other perspectives change. Good story. Axel and his band members are a fun group of guys. Remy carries a heavy burden from his childhood that still influences him in his current life. The author does an excellent job, leading our characters through the challeng of communicating performing self inventories. Good story, well done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"Come closer to me" is the second book in the Rock U series but you can read it as a standalone. In this book we follow Axel who has been in love with Remy, his older brother's best friend, for years. When Remy needs a tutor for one if his college classes Axel offers to help him and he finds out that his crush is not as straight as he thought. I'm so happy Axel got his guy and found his happily ever after. I was rooting for him since book one. They were really sweet together. I loved how Axel teased Remy and Remy was adorable when he was flustered. His bi awakening story was very beautifully written and realistic. It was a wonderful contemporary romance. It warmed my heart and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series. I'm really loving the found family theme. I had a fantastic time listening the audiobook, I loved how the narrator voiced Axel and Remy and brought their beautiful love story to life.
This book was a very sexy romance but it had pretty intense emotional drama as well. Axel has been in love with Remy for years but with Remy being straight, it's all just fantasy for him at this point. When Remy needs help passing a class in college, Axel uses that excuse to push Remy's buttons...much to Remy's dismay. You see, Axel makes Remy feel things that he probably shouldn't feel as a straight man. As Axel wears Remy down, these two decide to see how things go for them as a couple. Axel is all in, but Remy has some emotional trauma that won't allow him to get too close to anyone. I loved how Axel was so devoted to Remy and would wait forever for Remy to fall in love with him, if needed. These two were very hot together and the way they supported each other during rough times was incredibly sweet.
Remy worries, because of some of his life experiences, that if he gets close to someone something will happen to them. So he tries to avoid Axel, who teases him but the reason he is bothered by that and he goes out of way not to be in Axel's presence is because he is attracted to him. Axel is so drawn to Remy. He teases him, he wants to be in his presence, he wants to help him. They dance around one another for quite a while, but as Axel is helping him with his class, Remy starts to let down his guard a bit and they grow closer. A traumatic event occurs that tests them and Remy comes to realize the depth of Axel's commitment to and love for him and finds his bravery to embrace his love for Axel in return. There is sadness in their story but also healing that leads to a brighter future for them both. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After a good first book in this series, we get another book just as good.
We meet Axel, the lead guitar player and Remy, who lusts over Axel. Life would be good apart from Axel Remy's best friend and younger brother, who he has now offered to tutor.
I found it to be well-written and thoroughly enjoyable.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book/audio to anyone who enjoys a good romance novel.
The narration was good. Finnley Cole's clear and concise delivery made the listening experience enjoyable. I did speed up the narration to 1.15 on Audible, but this is normal for me.

The waiting game Axel was playing while he waited for Remy was difficult. Their build up was slow but still entertaining to watch. The love story has it’s sweetness, the m/c’s bring the story to life. All the supporting characters add their own form of support to the story. One thing I found a bit off putting was the gunman and the political agenda the author brought to the pages. Not a fan of any author stigmatizing those they disagree with as a radical group. Bad apples exist in every walk of life. I’d say be careful discriminating because no one likes being the victim of such a horrible act. That being addressed the characters were strong, the storyline interesting and the HeA well deserved. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
