On Call: A Neurosurgeon's Story of Serving God and Others

Rate this book
The inspiring memoir of how a boy who grew up poor in East Texas overcame countless obstacles to become an award-winning neurosurgeon and play an instrumental role in transforming a rundown hospital into a regional trauma and transplant center-and is still "On Call" after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Jim Moody's story is for anyone who has experienced physical, financial, or professional limitations, dealt with emotional pain when hurt by others, or wondered if God cares or even exists. Moody bares his soul about how God provided for and guided him through desperate times despite his doubts-and He will do the same for all who ask. The only requirement is a molecule of faith.

Dr. Moody’s book is very uplifting and inspiring. I was encouraged to keep after my dreams and found myself laughing out loud as he told stories of his encounters at home, while in medical training, of working near Elvis, and finding love. Most of all, his dedication to keep after his passion and calling to be a neurosurgeon and bring the top level of care to a poor neighborhood was remarkable in the face of so many people telling him to just settle. He pursued the path he felt God calling him to because he knew the work was bigger than what he could do alone or by his own strength.

I finished this memoir in 2 days. I enjoyed hearing so many details about Jimmy's, as my family liked to call him, life. I knew some as my grandfather was his half-brother, aka Junior in the book. Jimmy is just as endearing in person as he is in the book. As a teacher, I enjoy sharing stories of people who achieve success or overcome hardships in life. This is one I know will resound with some of them.
