What Happens When You Break

Rate this book
Maya Turner has spent most of her life hiding in the background. The only person who ever made her feel seen was Colton Grant, her brother's best friend. That is, until he leaves town after her freshman year of high school.

Twelve years later, Maya's engaged and living across the country. Until she needs to return home and face what she ran away from. Who she ran away from.

But the years have changed him, just like they've done to Maya. The once sweet, caring man is now angry and hostile. And he's living on her family's ranch. Always there. Always watching.

Fighting the spark between them seems impossible to resist, but is it worth throwing away the life she built for herself? What happens when they give in to their desire? What happens when they break?

I really gotta stop jumping at EVERY book booktok tells me to read cause sometimes they ain’t it. At first I was like wow I really love this book it’s giving Beth Dutton and Rip energy. Then it became cringe and then it became annoying. The fake wedding? What the fuck? For what? Also like why do we always have to end romance books in a pregnancy. Be for real.

I read this book in a whopping 5 hours. Colton and Maya had this addicting relationship I couldn’t get enough of and the setting was perfect. If you’re looking for a sophisticated romance, this isn’t your book. It reads very much like a fan fiction, take that as you will. If you want something fun, full of drama, and easy to read give this book a shot!

Story time TikTok was more interesting

I first heard of this book through one of those “story time” TikToks that talked about the scene when Maya comes home and I was intrigued by the premise. When I got to that scene and things were different than the story time, I brushed it off as the user misremembering and kept reading thinking it would get better if someone decided to make a whole TikTok about it. After getting about halfway though the book and the plot not really living up to my expectations, I went back to the TikTok and realized it was actually the author who posted it and not someone who genuinely enjoyed and was recommending the book in a fun way.

That being said, I didn’t hate this book, but it could really use a good edit to clean things up. The cowboy language didn’t do it for me, but that may be a preference thing. The steamy scenes felt rushed and awkward most of the time. The storytelling was all over the place and cringey when it came to miscommunications, the timing of events, etc.

The point at which I almost DNFd (and probably should have) was when I got to the “two tear cake” spelling error (one of many), but I kept going just to see the resolution.

Maya and Colton clearly have so much chemistry and the basic story line is there, but it was really hard to get past the juvenile writing. If there was better smut, it would be easier to swallow.

Small town, country romance filled with
OTT drama, spice, and a few truly touching moments. The conversation between Maya and her father, sitting on the porch, had me in tears. The special bond between a father and daughter is beautifully captured here.

Also.... I quickly realized that I do NOT want to see southern-twang in writing again. Ever. 'Hey darlin' . Eeew 🤮

I think we were all mislead by the same tiktok user.

Sorry to yuck your yum, but liking this one is a red flag

My brain deteriorated and not in a fun way

1. The “baby girl” of it all.
Part of it is that I generally don’t like pet names. Part of it is that I don’t get the appeal of “baby girl,” like am I supposed to find it sexy that he has known her since she was “baby”? Why did they make a 5yr age gap feel HUGE?? The whole infantilizing an adult woman was super weird. It was just non stop baby girl. It felt silly. I see your “baby girl”, and I raise you “don’t put baby in the corner” (obviously far superior age-gap romance + baby nickname).

2. Girlie, I don’t want to come for you, I have the insta-love bone to pick with most romance storylines, but would it have killed you to develop their backstory. Like SHOW ME don’t TELL ME that they have had this shared history. Why did I read 300pgs to not find any real substance (harsh I know, but no ragrets, this is my truth). There were a whole lot of single tears falling down faces —they were really in their feels, realizing things, at all times, the book was a bingo board of trauma—, but still, somehow not enough to make their backstories or lovestory credible. Most of the book was sex, and it just felt 1 dimensional because there wasn’t enough detail in the relationship to fall back on. The book was essentially a lot of miscommunication and heavy handed passion (I know that your selling this really hard, but WHY exactly are they into each other?), and somehow still, more tears.

3. The general store in the small Texas town only selling cutoff booty shorts 🥴 Coming from someone who is often in a small Texas town, cut it out. Also, she’s only staying for a couple of weeks but has to buy multiple pairs of “cowboy boots in different colors” (but of course, to match her “various flannels”). Like, ok bling bling, go off. Honestly, the disparity between the parts that were detailed and the parts that weren’t, is confounding.

4. the casual homophobia that just kept coming up. Just because you have a token gay in the general vicinity of the plot doesn’t excuse your toxic masculinity everywhere else. Especially when you don’t address it!! Like am I supposed to find it attractive that when the MMC feels threatened by another love interest he resorts to insinuating someone is gay? Like it’s just glossed over. Here’s an idea, gay people aren’t a punchline, call him out when he uses slurs! Or maybe don’t resort to dated stereotypes that reinforce discriminatory beliefs. Please, give the modern, “hyper-masculine”, cowboy some credit. **update: Omg lol, published in 2022! Yikes

5. the least suspenseful fake wedding to ever exist…. Literally yawn, could not be bothered. I think that this plot point was supposed to be the draw of the book, but let’s skip over it.

6. My last straw was the damn horse’s name Turant?! As in their couple ship name (i.e.♥️Turner + Grant♥️). NO. That’s jail for animal cruelty.

(At this point she abandons the numbering)

There is also something seriously fucked with happily ever after, unexpected pregnancy narrative. Boring.

Honestly, the most gripping scene, which coincidentally also had the most limited description: MMC’s near fatal car accident when he was almost killed by a telephone poll going through the windshield (?!?!). I KNOW. So many questions and no answers. Though, there is a 50/50 chance I got all the details to that accident wrong, because I was feverishly skimming most of this book.

Overall, finishing this book was a poor judgement call. If you feel like picking it up, consider putting it back down.

I rated it a 1 but it’s really a 0.25 because it cost me some monies.

This book, what can I say it a small town/country, brother best friend, child friends to lovers romance, this book was very good read, I read it with a few hours without stopping and that's when I know that it was a 5 star read for me.

Gosh I just adored this book! It gave me all the feels the entire time. Perfectly played out. Didn’t move slow and didn’t move too fast. It was so perfect. From start to finish I couldn’t put It down. I have read some of her other books, and it’s always the same thing also. I can never put them down. Finished in one night!

I ended up DNF-ing this at around 55%. First of all, while I really enjoyed the premise of this book, the writing was just not for me. The spicy scenes felt super rushed and pretty awkward, and I wasn’t a fan of either of the MC’s.

A lot of it was pretty cringe, so I took a bit of a break (5 months), and when I was finally about to get back around to reading it again it was no longer available on KU. I’m sorry, but I’m not gonna pay $4 to read a book that I’m not sure would’ve gotten more than 3 stars anyway. So I decided to cut my losses and DNF it.

Like another review commented about on here, I first heard about this book from a TikTok and decided that I liked what I was hearing. But as with their story, the book was pretty different than how it was described to viewers.

she cheated. i get she doesn’t really like her fiancé and she’s questioning if she should marry him. but that doesn’t make it okay. she’s cheating on him with colt. there was no build up to them either. they literally had sex in chapter 4 it wasn’t steamy and it wasn’t hot. it was very rushed and random. they literally hugged and he made her wrap her legs around his waist in the hug and then they kiss out of nowhere??? i get her fiancé cheats later in the book and she pretends to be hurt when she never cared at all but it’s just boring. i will never understand the appeal for authors to write cheating tropes. no one gets it. no one understands the pain of it.

DNF. .5 ⭐️ I don’t know what the hype with this book is!!! Maya was extremely childish. Both her and Colton had terrible communication. For maya being a prosecutor she sure had no back bone with her decisions.

First of all her and Colton hooked up way too early. While she was still engaged. Then there’s Colton believing Abby and then proceeded to sleep with her when he “knew” that she was mayas bff

This whole book just felt super childish

well I finished it

This book was just too much. Every trope possible rolled into one, mixed with excessive grammatical errors, run on sentences and too many monologues. Also the scene you read the book for happens in the first five pages basically and the rest of the book is just a rollercoaster of drama. 0/10

1.5 stars from me. I, like other readers, was bamboozled into reading this via a booktok. There were components of the book that could have made for a great read, but it was overshadowed by grammatical errors, aspects of the story that made no sense, and a series of events so unbelievable that it was painful to read. I should have checked the reviews before I started reading this one.

First of all… I read this book in my head in a country accent. I’ve never been to the south but I’m 92% sure nobody talks that dang tootin’ cheesy. This book was fine though I don’t like the cheating trope. Both main characters were immature and if you like a slow burn this book is not for you. But nevertheless, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in less than a day. I wouldn’t go running to my friends recommending this book but 🤷🏻‍♀️

I loved this book so much. The story line, the insane amount of spice, Colton's love for Maya. It was all so great. Claude was a great throw to the story though. Him being there added so much even though he had such little presence. I loved the way Colton didn't hesitate to go find Maya after her realized he had missed her "wedding" and he needed to go win her back. The ending was super sweet, him asking her to marry him properly and then the birth of their sweet baby boy only a month after her dad passed.

enjoyable book, but no accountability

Before I start spoiling things, overall I enjoyed this read. I stayed hooked and wanted to know what came next. It also has good spicy scenes if that’s what you look for.

Spoilers ahead:
What I did not like about this book is the zero accountability on anyone’s part and some hard to believe items. Maya goes to New York and not one family member ever visits her there? Unrealistic. She cheats on her fiancé and never once has any repercussions for that behavior. If anything she feels justified because she later finds out her fiancé was cheating on her. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Her childhood best friend betrayed her and there was never any confrontation with her or book karma (other than her ending up trashy). Then the mother, she’s seen as a hero but I can’t help thinking how selfish she is to go through her daughter’s phone, contact the fiancé without permission and take control planning a wedding “so her dying husband can walk you down the aisle.” Even if that is something she desperately wants, that’s a conversation to have with the bride. And when she finds out BEFORE the wedding that her daughter hates the fiancé, she still wants her to go through with the deception. This family is so immature.

then onto some quick things but speak to deeper issues: they’d have 5 margaritas and still get behind the wheel of a car. Drunk driving crash again with no accountability. And they referred to the fiancé as “fruity” A LOT because he wasn’t “manly” like the hero and brother. Slur might be a strong word, but I’ll use it anyway: that word is used against lgbtq people often and the fact this book takes place in small town Texas just gives me the ick. Not small town Texas, but the eye roll that small town Texas throws around words like that. It’s like the author thinks it’s okay because she wrote a gay couple into the story, so that makes it okay. It’s kind of like “you hit like a girl”…. It implies being a girl is a bad thing. Calling the fiancé fruity implies being gay or not as burly is a bad thing.

Ugh. Again, I enjoyed the read but was frustrated there was never any accountability for these people.

To be honest…I skimmed the last half of the book.

The first half, I relatively enjoyed. The writing style wasn’t to my liking. I really wasn’t a fan of the overtly southern slang. As much as I know there are people with southern accents out there, I always feel stereotyped being that I’m from the south when I read them for some reason. It wasn’t necessarily a deal breaker, it just didn’t add any points in the stories favor and I couldn’t really “fall” for Colton like any other book boyfriend, even though he was a sweetheart.

And as much as I wanted Maya and Colton to be together, I can’t condone cheating. And that was my biggest problem with the book. That Maya kept up this farce of a relationship with her fiancé when she fell out of love with him long before she returned to Texas. That she didn’t end it on the premise of fulfilling an idea for her father that she later disputed anyway. Again, it’s authors wanting to create conflict for conflict’s sake. It’s one thing if it flows with the story, but this did not.

Had there not been the cheating factor or had Maya at least been honest with her fiancé from the start, I would have enjoyed their relationship so much more. I also wish Maya would have felt a little more mature. I very much felt like she took things out of proportion. For example: Getting upset with Colton for being with her ex - best friend when he had no idea of their history and they weren’t even remotely together. He has a past which he is allowed. And I felt like that concept was hypocritical considering she was literally engaged for the entire duration of their relationship.

So to sum, I’m never one to discourage others from reading a book because I believe you should form your own opinions, as everyone is different, but personally, I would avoid this one.

I have to say I’ve never read a cowboy romance like this one. This was so much better than expected. I’ve been wanting to read this book for about a year, I’m so glad I did. I loved how complex Maya was, the situations that kept being thrown at her I don’t know how she handled it. Colton was such a good MMC, I’ve never read a cowboy like him *swoon*. Let’s just say he has a way with words. There was never a dull moment in this book, something was always happening. I absolutely loved they were soulmates that had to find their way back to each other. I’m telling you what you need to drop whatever cowboy romance you’re reading you have to read this book.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BREAK

I went into this book mostly blind. One quote on a FB page and I had to read it and I was not disappointed. It was sexy and sweet. Colton was the cowboy dream and Maya was one of those strong female MC’s that was still a relatable human. I loved it so much and the plot was just as good as the steam. The only downside was the spelling/grammar mistakes were more often than I’m used to seeing-just extra words or the wrong you/you’re or missing apostrophes in conjunction words but the story itself was amazing. I usually read dark romance so this was a cute light story that brought me out of my reading slump. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quick fun read with a deep plot and an intensely magnetic couple that you can’t help but root for despite the impossible circumstances.

I want to start off with saying I have never written a review before because my grammar isn’t the best and I never am able to get my thoughts and opinions together. Well GL Strong is a newer author but she definitely knows how to make you feel what the characters feel. I love how the point of view goes back and forth between characters. I feel like that always makes a book better. I am not much of a romance person but the past few months I have not being able to get back into reading and felt no desire to start a new book. When I saw this on tik tok I was definitely skeptical but once i picked it up I couldn’t stop. I would describe this book as a perfect Hallmark story with a little extra spice. I also feel like each person reading it can relate to this book in their own way. It definitely makes you want to feel loved like Colton loves Maya.

I think this book needed more editing. The plot felt rushed. We barely learned anything about the main character in her daily life before she flies back to Texas. Many of the characters felt quite flat, like they were little more than a stereotype, but it could have been fixed with a bit more back story for each of them. There are also a number of spelling errors throughout, including “doofus” spelled “dufus”. It completely takes me out of the story when I read those errors. I found the way the accent was written to be distracting as well.

I found this through BookTok. I hope the author finds a new editor who challenges her to improve her writing.

oh my heart!!

Maya is back home in Texas, soaking up every moment with her father that is dying. When she finds herself face to face with Colton. The first love of her life.
The man she spent her childhood swooning over, her brothers best friend, is front and center with her family. Only problem? Her fiancé waiting for her in NY.
Colton has always love Maya, but being his best friends sister, she’s completely off limits. But sometimes that fire inside cannot be ignored. Trying to find their own way through these burning and wild feelings brings them so much…now can they find their way together? Or will she marry her fiancé and walk away from Colton for good.
