Civil War had raged on the Al-Shan Archipelago for the past four decades, only recently coming to an end with the enthronement of the new Emperor.
This is not his story.
The Blood Demon, renowned general of said civil war, was tired of all the fighting and politicking that had described the last four decades of her existence. All she really wanted to do now is to go out into the world and see the many lands from her father's stories.
Thus she retired, and went and did exactly what she wanted.
This is the story of what happens when you toss a (retired) war machine with somewhat lacking common sense into an unsuspecting world at peace.
An enjoyable light novel, with occasional gritty Parts. The story of a retired General, who, tired of decades of war, wants to explore the world as her deceased father did, seeing the wondrous sights he described to her when she was young. This is the story of her journeys, with the occasional chapter set in her past, explaining the ptsd she suffers from, and battles of the war that she wishes to forget. It is a story of people she meets and places she visits, food and drinks she tries among other races, and small adventures she has along the way. I am looking forward to the next book, in order to find out more about the world she lives in, and the beauties of it.
I think there is a story here. It is for me just truly overshadowed by the horribly poor execution and obvious lack of competence on part of the author. I found it impossible to enjoy this book and I really made an effort to ignore the many issues with it, I just didn’t manage it and felt nauseous throughout the read.
A shame really, for I think this could’ve made for a good story, I really like the premise, were it not for every paragraph, if maybe not every sentence, having something just so wrong with it. I had never thought I’d end up thinking the word rancid and many of its synonyms to be an applicable descriptor for writing. Imagine drinking a glass of milk that kept fluctuating between tasting fresh and rancid on the tongue. That’s the closest I can get to describing how reading this felt mentally. I took breaks when it manifested as a physical sensation.
So this book is needlessly long and horrendously boring. Entire chapters pass where next to nothing happened. In fact the span of several months can pass in a single chapter in which nothing of note actually occurred.. oh and when something does happen? It usually involves the main character torturing someone in graphic detail. Seriously it happens multiple times.
I found a lot of it interesting, but nothing was really cool enough to keep me on the journey. The whole thing has a vacation catalog type vibe, which is fine for nice areas and when she's solving some problems. Once she hit the "City of Sin" area it took a weird turn where she just ends up spectating this place that shouldn't exist. I feel like so much justification was shoved at me as a reader for this area, but honestly nothing in my options is going to change my stance on it. The story would be better off without that stop.
Nothing really wrong, but also nothing really good either.
The pace is very much a slice of life, very slow and detailed. This type of story relies on its characters and their interactions. This is where it falls flat. The main character is interesting in design but boring in actuality. She is bland in her reactions. The day to day is overly detailed with little real content.
The story follows a retired general after a vicious civil war. Excellent world building, the MC is far from perfect, has committed what would be considered horrific war crimes by some. The author actually captured the feel of someone who experienced war.
