This was a new author for me, but I thought the ARC description sounded worth trying. It is a fun amateur detective story that has an unlikely heroine, Tootsie Goldberg. The book opens on the morning of Tootsie’s 50th birthday, when everything changes for her. The classic radio station where she works is being sold and all her friends and co-workers are now unemployed. There is something shady going on with the sale. This stirs something in Tootsie looking at how unfair the situation is for all involved. Now Tootsie is on a quest to figure out how they ended up in this situation. Also, there is the relationship with “Black Windbreaker” who starts out as a security nemesis for Tootsie and becomes so much more as she continues to dig into the sale of the radio station. Its a cute story that takes some twists to get to the end.
This read like dime-store drama at best. A wealthy 50-year-old woman gets ditched by her lottery-winning husband for a younger model—but don't worry, she gets half. Then her radio station job goes up in smoke after a chauvinistic new owner fires everyone. Beyond the real tragedy of mass layoffs, there wasn’t much mystery to hold onto.
Enter a younger cop (cue the ooh la la) and our heroine decides to play detective, ignoring all rules and common sense. Is she arrested? Nope. Does her boy-cop protest? A little, but mostly shrugs. She somehow solves the case with illegally obtained everything, leading the villain to monologue himself into handcuffs.
They save the town, ride off into a HEA, and I yawned my way through the last page.
The book started out really slow but got better as it went on. I found the main character, Tootsie, getting on my nerves a lot. How she landed a hot, younger man is beyond me. She did everything possible to push him away, was extremely rude, and had no filter. I grew tired of hearing how her body reacted at the slightest touch from Black Windbreaker as well. Who gets that worked up so easily? I was kind of hoping Tootsie would have been hit by a bus instead.
The editing of the book was atrocious. So many missed words and errors. Probably won't read another Tootsie book.
Do you like to laugh? Then grab When She Gets Hot starring the hilarious reluctant activist Tootsie Goldberg and sexy cop Black Windbreaker, aka, Steve. I never laugh out loud when I'm reading but the quirky, smart-mouthed Tootsie had me chortling all the way through this madcap story with a touch of mystery. The characters--main and secondary--are so vivid they leap off the page with their delightful flaws and distinctive voices. Black Windbreaker is hot, hot, hot. Highly recommend!
This book just wasn’t for me. I wasn’t really a fan of the age gap (personal preference). The kindle version of the book had a number of punctuation errors that was a bit off putting. I can definitely see WHY others would like this, and suggest people give it a read for themselves. Just not for me.
Really cute story about a grandma detective. I’m honored to know the author, and I can easily see who she used as inspiration for a lot of the characters. It’s an easy read and well worth taking the time for a great story. Looking forward to the others in the series!
This was a fun read with a feisty and loveable heroine, Tootsie. I loved how Tootsie stood up for her friends and for what's right. This book has twists and turns, memorable characters, and even a little romance.
This was a cute rom-com to start the Tootsie series. There were some funny scenes and I liked the way the relationship with Tootsie and Steven developed. This was a light and easy read.
