Food is their love language, but can they follow a recipe for romance?

When an unexpected and forbidden attraction starts to simmer between judge and contestant on the set of a TV baking competition, both women must decide what they're willing to risk for the ultimate prize in this debut rom-com.

Tori Moore, popular high school chemistry teacher, avid home baker, and soon-to-be empty nester, auditions for the American Bake-o-Rama TV competition at the urging of her twin teenagers. If she somehow makes it all the way, the prize money could allow her to finally open her own bakery. But still reeling from her divorce and being naturally risk-averse, it’s not just money that’s standing between Tori and her dreams.

Once on set, Tori catches the eye of Kendra Campbell, the notoriously ruthless celebrity chef and Bake-o-Rama judge. Kendra is desperate to save her restaurant and expand her Chippy Chunk cookie empire, and the show is her ticket to financial security. But she’s been told to soften her approach in order to appease viewers seeking feel-good entertainment. After years spent fighting for space in a male-dominated industry, Kendra finds it challenging—and surprisingly rewarding—to make the shift from harsh critique to encouragement.

Tori, drawn to the uncompromising way Kendra moves through the world, senses a tenderness beneath her tough exterior. She and Kendra find it increasingly hard to keep their distance amid six weeks of cooking challenges and kitchen disasters. For both of them, the best prize of all might just be love.

Sparks fly in this delightful debut lesbian rom-com set in Sonoma wine country that’s as warm and satisfying as a chocolate lava cake.

You know how most foodie romances are like 5% food and 95% romance?

This is the exact opposite. And as a person who likes foodie things and takes them seriously in books, it was actually incredibly refreshing. Would I recommend this to someone looking for a romance? Maaaybe not (not because it's bad! It's just so very light on that content). But I will say that I planned to read like three chapters of this and ended up reading the whole thing because I was so grabbed by the cooking show element in a way I almost never am. So if you want a book that's actually very much about being on a cooking show, I definitely recommend this one!

This was very different from what I expected, and another case of a "romcom" where the romance aspect is more of a subplot. At this point I'm BEGGING publishers to market their books honestly. Because this was actually a pretty good read, but I kept waiting for the romance to become more prominent, and it was just barely there.

Like I said, this was a pretty good read. It's hard to dislike a book featuring a baking competition, and the competition is described in a lot of detail. Quite frankly, I found myself a little bored at times, and this felt like too long of a read. But I did like seeing so much of the competition at the same time.

As it is, this was very middle of the road for me, and I'm disappointed that the romance wasn't more present. This would have added some much-needed variety to the baking competition plot as well.

Okay I will preface this by saying Love at 350 was completely different than what I thought it would be but not in a bad way. By reading the summery and how this book was marketed I was fully expecting so much more romance so that’s going to be my base.

It is about a teacher who’s an exceptional baker and cook and whose kids sign up for a bake-off competition without her knowing, where she finds a spark with the competition’s cutthroat judge.

I loved both Tori and Kendra a ton. Tori is an angel come from heaven, she’s so good and kind and is just an incredible human. I loved every second of her. Kendra is so talented, feels deeply for things that matter to her and is so gone for Tori.

I loved the aspect of the baking show, the depth the author brought to the book and just how accurate it was!

I feel as though the romance and the bake off plot could’ve been balanced better without taking anything away from each other. 1/5 of this book is the romance and the remaining is the competition. As I said, I absolutely loved the bake-off but the romance lacked completely. I struggled to feel the chemistry between them most of the time. Especially since they barely had any time together all throughout the book which was incredibly disappointing. Unfortunately I didn’t like the romance at all but the bake off and the amazing cats of characters made up for it.

So if you’re looking for a fun cooking competition with fun twists and great characters along with a pinch of romance, then this is most definitely for you! I really encourage you to try it out because remember this is MY opinion and you can end up absolutely loving it;)

If you are a rom-com and food competition lover like me, I highly recommend getting ready for this delectable debut from Lisa Peers! Love at 350° features queer female characters in their 40s which I loved, and the baking show competition aspect was chef's kiss. 💋 I highly enjoyed both Tori and Kendra's viewpoints and Tori actually gave me Elizabeth Zott from Lessons in Chemistry vibes due to her teaching background and chemistry approach to baking. There is so much talk about food and sweets that it will make you crave everything! It was also a bit like being behind the scenes on a competition show and that was interesting as well.

I literally listened to the same narrator almost twice in a row thanks to this book, and Barrie Kreinik was as fabulous for Love at 350° as she was for the other book. She makes a great one-woman show when it comes to narrating multiple characters, and I thought she captured their essence perfectly. This was a really lighthearted read, but at the same time it is about pursuing your dreams no matter what point you are at in your life and that is a message we could always use more of. This was a super quick and easy read that I would recommend to all rom-com lovers!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

As much as I enjoyed the competition and food aspect of this, there was nary a rom nor a com to be found. I couldn't get behind the feelings they had for each other because there was very little development towards their relationship to make me believe it

I have found myself in a very specific niche of LGBTQIA chef romances, and TBH? I’m not mad about it. Love at 350° by Lisa Peers on a one that I’m so happy to add to my read-and-loved list! It follows an amateur baker onto the set of a baking challenge, where she rekindles her dreams and kindles a whole new love. It was such an interesting concept and well executed. Tori and Kendra are great main characters and you can’t help but keep your fingers crossed for them. Even though this book was fairly lighthearted, it touches on some very real every day struggles AND does a great job at recognize that life doesn’t end at 40. All told, it’s an excellent romance that I was so happy to add to my list.

Special thanks to Net Galley and Random House for providing an advanced reviewer copy to me in exchange for my honest review and opinion!

This was descent. It’s suppose to be a foodie rom- com; but it was actually pretty light on the romance. It was mostly a fan fic for “British Bakeoff”; which in not complaining… LOVE BAKE-OFF. But it was a little surface level and lacked uniqueness and character. I will say it was fun reading about all the food though! Made me very hungry the whole time… 🎂🍰🍪🍩🥖

I'm a sucker for reality television baking show romances and this debut by Lisa Peers was such fun!! Tori is a recently divorced chemistry teacher whose two kids sign her up for the show, Bake-o-Rama without telling her.

When she gets selected Tori decides to compete on a whim and finds herself making new friends, gaining a newfound confidence in her baking abilities and falling for one of the judges along the way. Highly recommended, especially if you like sweet, dual POV, Sapphic romances with characters that are super likable and relatable.

This was also great on audio narrated by one of my favs, Barrie Kreinik and perfect for fans of books like Love and other disasters by Anita Kelly, Chef's kiss by TJ Alexander or Rosaline Palmer takes the cake by Alexis Hall. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy and @prhaudio for a complimentary ALC in exchange for my honest review!

This book was marketed as a rom-com. It's barely a romance and it certainly isn't funny. I love a book with a cooking or baking competition in it but this one is not it. I don't mind the lack of romance really because the cooking competition part is always interesting to me but I want publishers to do better with their marketing. Yes there's an HEA and yes there is some flirting but overall, it's very very very romance lite. I was completely disappointed with the book.

Don't go in expecting a rom-com. This isn't it.

In her debut novel, Lisa Peers delivers a heartwarming tale set in the unlikely backdrop of a reality baking show. Tori, a high school chemistry teacher, finds herself thrust into the spotlight when her kids secure her a spot on the show. On set she meets Kendra, a judge known for her tough critique. Despite the immediate chemistry between them, a contract clause strictly prohibits any personal interaction outside the show, adding a layer of complexity to their budding relationship. It's a forbidden romance at its finest.

Peers navigates this unique setting with a blend of charm and authenticity, making it hard to believe this is her first novel. The narrative is filled with delightful moments, engaging characters, and, of course, an abundance of amazing culinary creations. It really felt like an extension of watching GBBO, which is one of my favourite things to do.

Tori’s character is instantly likeable, her passion and warmth radiating off the page, while Kendra's character evolves throughout the story. However, those expecting a conventional rom-com might find themselves slightly off-kilter. The romance here is subtle, with most of the emotional connection developing internally due to the constraints of their professional relationship. This approach, while intriguing, might not fulfil those craving a more overt romantic storyline.

Despite the light touch on romance, the novel concludes on a hopeful note, suggesting the possibility of a deeper relationship in the future. Love at 350° is a delightful, easy read, perfect for those seeking a lighthearted novel with a hint of sapphic romance.

I look forward to reading more from Lisa Peers in future.

If you like The Great British Bake Off then you will love this book!
Tori is a high school chemistry and enters a baking competition at the insistence of her twins. Winning the prize would mean she could pursue her dreams of opening her own bakery. Kendra is the ruthless celebrity judge who is trying to soften her approach and expand her cookie empire. As Tori and Kendra spend time together over the competition they realize that money may not be the ultimate prize.
First of all this book will leave you hungry! Second it is just such a cute story and I loved how sweet it was with just a bit of sabotage thrown in to up the drama a bit. I loved getting to see behind the scenes of a big production and how things work. I thought the chemistry between Tori and Kendra was believable and them leaving notes for each other was adorable. This is definitely a slow burn book though and more bake off than romance. A great debut novel and can't wait to see what is next for Lisa Peers!

I wanted to read an engaging novel with some romance, and that’s exactly what I got.

If you read reviews you’ll notice the warning that this is less a romance and more a story about a television baking competition, and while that’s absolutely true, I felt the romance here much more than I do in actual romance novels. I’ll take this over a lot of other romances I read, to be honest. At least there’s chemistry with the leads and, because they aren’t allowed to be open about their feelings (because of the TV contract), Lisa Peers has to work harder to earn it. And, okay, sparks fly a little too quickly and you have to wonder how much Tori, baking show contestant, and Kendra, chef judge, know each other, but it somehow worked for me. Plus, the drama around the competition was excellent.

It loses points for ending way too quickly and for how quickly the romance moves with so little interaction. I would have loved a GBBO-style epilogue where we get updates about what all the contestants and judges and the host are up to. But alas…

A British bake off inspired, forbidden- queer romance?? This was definitely heavy on the food scene, which as someone who works in the food science industry, I am here for. The romance was a slow slow burn because Kendra and Tori were on a contract to not fraternize between judge and contestant. I enjoyed their flirting throughout and it was mature. Overall, if you love British Bake Off with a side of romance, this is for you.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC!

I have a lot of feelings about baking books as a professional baker and there are a lot of things that make it a good fictional baking book in my opinion. This book has almost all of those. The baking and the baking competition are front and center in this book and everything was very well done. It is very reminiscent of the great British bake off So if that is not your jam, this book's not going to be for you.

If you're slightly obsessed with the great British Bake off and all things baking, this book is probably going to be for you.

Now that I've noted how prominent the baking in this book is, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the baking has overtaken the romance. For me I was fine with this. I liked the slow burn I liked the last minute figuring out how they were going to be together and I liked that they both had things in their own lives to focus on. However, this is marketed as a rom-com which it is not. It's more like a slice of life baking competition with a romance subplot. I was here for it but if you are expecting a romance to be front center, you might be disappointed.

I really especially loved Kendra. So many women in hospitality are treated like Kendra where they are either infantilized and patronized or we are called bitchy or bossy or cold. It is in fact possible to be a badass woman in the kitchen and maybe it's people's perceptions that need to change. I cannot count the amount of times that men have told me that I am too severe and that I need to be nicer when in reality I had the same level of severity as the men in the kitchen but they are allowed to have that and be respected and women are not for some reason. So I really appreciated Kendra and her no nonsense attitude and respect for food and baking. I liked that she was able to explore a little bit of a softer side but also was shown the respect she deserved by those who mattered.

I like Tori too. I liked her relationship with her kids but she was a little bit more forgetful for me. It was fine but she wasn't my favorite character.

So in summary, I'm definitely going to recommend this book to people who like baking books but also to folks who are looking for love stories that have substance to them where the romance isn't front and center but a little bit more subtle. This book also has no explicit scenes which is something that too much of the book community frowns upon but I think books with no explicit scenes or fade to black have their home in the romance world as well and should be celebrated just the same.

this book was LITERALLY SO GOOD.

it had the slowburn and angst that makes you keep flipping the pages to see the couple end up together. it had twists and turns and a lot of baking knowledge. like, this shit was fucking good. there was also SO MUCH LGBTQ+ representation which makes it even better.

my only complaint (and i’m not even knocking any stars off because i loved this book) was that there was so much pining and yearning for not very much romance at the end. BUT i loved this book a lot and the premise and all of the characters.

3.25 stars.

"Love at 350°" by Lisa Peers is a solid 40s-somethings sapphic baking show novel that certainly made me very hungry, but made me slightly less enthralled with the romantic aspect. What this book does well is describe the baking show proceedings, cooking and baking preparations, and the various types of foods to be prepared in great detail. It is also full of reality show and in-real-life character drama. This story is very reminiscent of "The Great British Bake-Off" combined with books like "Chef's Kiss" by TJ Alexander, "Fake It Till You Bake It" by Jamie Wesley, and "Sugar and Spice" by Kimberley Kincaid. What this book is light on is romance. While the attraction between main characters Tori and Kendra shows up at some point, on Kendra's part, it feels like her feelings go from 0-100 rather quickly. Their potential love story takes a backseat to baking show shenanigans. It might be because their potential romance is "forbidden" because they each signed contracts that don't allow contestants (Tori) and judges (Kendra) to fraternize for at least a year after the show has wrapped. As a result, they are forced to communicate by passing notes to one another. This slows down the pacing a lot, in my opinion. We have to keep waiting for all of the reality show stuff to stop for Tori and Kendra to even have the slightest communication together. There is also a mysterious element involving another one of the contestants, Natalie, who leaves quickly, doesn't communicate with the bakers, and has an unpleasant disposition. I loved that the characters were in their 40s, more of that in the romance genre, but please, let there be ACTUAL ROMANCE in more mature character novels! The writing is fine, but it feels like this book was mismarketed in large part. It wraps up nicely, but I feel a bit duped by this one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lisa Peers, Random House Publishing Group - Random House, and Dial Press Trade Paperback for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for my review.

This is a really cute novel about Tori, a teacher and single mom with twins who loves to bake; her kids enter her in a national cooking contest which could win her $100,000.00 and a chance to be on the show. Exited and scared, she goes in with exuberance and skill, only to be tempted by Kendra, one of the celebrity judges on the show. Tori has recently gone through an unexpected divorce from the woman she loved, so this feeling too is sudden but not entirely unwelcome! My mouth watered through most of this book as the recipes sounded so good. Tension between contestants was high and there were several complications, but I loved the storyline and its clever characters!

The reality cooking show trope feels pretty overdone, and unfortunately, this book didn't quite break the mold for me. While I appreciated the focus on diverse foods and the queer romance, the story itself was rather boring and largely forgettable. I seriously considered putting it down multiple times, and it was a real struggle to get through. The ending did redeem it a bit, leading me to conclude that while I liked the book, I certainly didn't love it.

I have read many a foodie romance, and it's the sub-genre that I never know I would love so much but I was thrilled to pick this one up during a recent library haul. After loving so many recent releases from The Dial Press, I had high expectations for Love at 350° and it did NOT disappoint.

"My theory is that to have the best results, I have to focus on who I'm baking for: my kids or my best friends, a weeding or a birthday party. Maybe I could simply make some stranger's day brighter because they are something I baked. Whatever the occasion, I believe that connection, that why, is what catalyzes the ingredients and makes something not just good but utterly delicious. I want to test that theory as a contestant."

One of the things I loved most was how Tori, a high school chemistry teacher was nominated for American Bake-O-Rama by her twins, and found her passion through science + baking, and found herself during her time on the show. The slow-burn romance may not appeal to those looking for a steamy romance, but for me the author gave us the perfect amount of heat for these two women to fall for one another.

Kendra was certainly the grump to her sunshine, and I couldn't get over how well-written her character was written. To be a female in the industry, and how she handled each step of her career was insightful and inspiring to read.

I was entertained with each chapter, and adored how focused on food the story was because it seemed so relatable for their experiences on the show. I loved that Tori + Kendra's personalities showed through their cooking, and how well we got to know the other contestants, judges and crew as the story went along. The love her twins had for her was adorable, and I loved how they pushed their mom to go for her dreams most of all.

"You and I are a lot alike. For us, baking is more than just something we do. It connects us to the people we love. It shows we care, and that's why it makes us happy.'

A fantastic start for reading love stories this February, I highly recommend anyone with a love for cooking pick this one up!

If it isn't clear by now, I love a baking trope. I see baking or a bakery in the synopsis or food on the cover, and it is immediately marked "Want to Read." It's honestly a problem, but here we are.

Mileage will vary with Love at 350⁰, as the romance takes a backseat to the baking competition aspect of the plot. The lack of a romantic focus made it hard for me to connect with the main characters and root for their connection. If you require spice, look elsewhere. There is nothing beyond a little bit of kissing.

I enjoyed the baking show aspect. I found the ins and outs of the show to be interesting, as I have always wondered how these types of shows work. I enjoyed the side characters from the show and wish we could have gotten a bit more of them.

If you enjoy "women's fiction" with romance as a subplot instead of the main focus, this will probably work for you. Love at 350⁰ is also perfect for fans of Sapphic Romance, The Great British Bakeoff, The Food Network, 40ish Year Old Main Characters, Squeaky Clean Romance, and No Third Act Breakup. There are mentions of past traumas, like divorce.

Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Random House, and Dial Press Trade Paperback for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a cozy easy read that I genuinely loved and finished in a day. It’s like watching the great British baking show but from behind the scenes with a forbidden slow burn romance. Oh and did I mention it’s gay??? It’s cozy, feel good, lighthearted, and fun. I really loved the concept and execution of this book. My only tiny criticisms would be that it might be a little too slow burn (and I LOVE a slow burn so don’t get it twisted), the ending happened quickly, and I kinda hated (and cringed) that one of Kendra’s main character points was that’s she almost exclusively wore baking graphic tees with bad puns. I also enjoyed the secondary characters but wish they would’ve gotten slightly more page time. There was also a little plot twist I didn’t see coming which was delightful as well. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would def recommend it to anyone who loves baking and/or gay (kind of romance?) books!!!

2.5 // this was fine!! I wanted a lot more romance between the main characters, but because of their judge and contestant relationship on the TV show, they have to be very secretive about their mutual attraction and mostly communicate through notes for the majority of the story. The book was VERY focused on the competition, which I liked, but it felt more like a general fiction book than a romance. I would have liked to see a bit more romantic chemistry between the characters rather than just longing.

I'm in-between a 3.75-4 so I'll just roundup for Goodreads purposes.

This reminded me very much of Sadie on a Plate by Amanda Elliot just a queer version and I enjoyed that book too. I will say, I loved the ending a lot more with Love at 350. I thought it ended perfectly and left me very happy.

This is very light on romance, no sex scenes, and just 1 kiss at the very end.

I consider this clean romance and clean language.
