After a bit of an extended wait between issues, Saga is BACK, my friends! This issue is a bit of a bridge getting us from one idea to the next but there is still a few moments to gasp at and remember why Saga is a blast. There are a lot of BIG plans coming into motion on multiple plot lines, so while this issue is a bit less exciting than others have been, it’s bending towards big things to come. Also sometimes you have to be super distressed over losing a character…
But we have Petrichor and some cool back story which I am always here for, and the bizarre Amazon-esque factory done in classic Saga fashion rules. Well at least the dude high as shit does, the child labor less so.
But you come to Saga to be shaken up and it never ever lets me down. Excited for more, already don’t want to wait a month.

Well, that took a turn.
Squire is starting to become a very interesting character in ways that I never expected before and while it's fascinating it's also giving me some misgivings... and I don't particularly love it.
It's cool that the elements I had dismissed as red-hearings are coming back to be more important than originally expected, though I still don't like them one bit. Like many things in this series, it all just strikes me as something that will end in tragedy.
On the other hand, it's great to see world-building coming back into play after so long. How vast and bottomless this universe is was one of the things to capture my attention first and not exploring it in more detail would truly be a shame.
While things seem to be heating up again I just wish they could remain calm and happy but, alas, that is not the story we have been following from the beginning.

Saga #63
This issue starts with Hazel and Squire going to the lady who said she can bring their fathers back to life, in order to make sure she's telling the truth. After they find out that she does, they go on a hunt, to steal some of the overtly expensive dust needed for the procedure. At the same time, Alana is working at an Amazon-esque warehouse/factory and Petrichor continues her journey to get revenge for Prince Robot IV.
This was one of the best single issues of "Saga" I've read in a while. Possibly the best since the series went in the three year long hiatus. We can finally see how Hazel is evolving into the protagonist of the story, more so than her mother and we can also see how strong her relationship with her foster brother, Squire, is. Furthermore, this issue works as a subtle critique to overtly capitalistic companies, like Amazon, who oppress their workers and strip them from their rights, in order to maximize profits. Moreover, the dialogues and the narration are incredible as always, as well as the structure of the story. There are 4 or 5 stories going on, simultaneously, in each issue and somehow Brian writes them all in such a way that you never feel lost or uninterested.
The artwork by Fiona Staples is gorgeous as always. This series wouldn't be the same without her and she proves that with every panel she draws.

My god these kids make me nervous!
I really do wish I remembered more of the series, particularly pertaining to Petrichor, since I remember nothing about her. I read the series so fast that I think I would really benefit from a slow re-read.
Plus, I miss Ghus. I miss when they were an ever-growing gang and not just a small group of sad, traumatised beings.
Artwork always gets me, and these last pages are killer. Always a heavy blow at the end.
Also finding unexpected joy in reading the letter pages.
No complaints from me at all, just more of the same fantastic stuff.

Chekhov's arm-gun returns to the page - and the authors showed us exactly what they think of poor labour practices, just as subtly as normal.

A "decisive" new installment.
Kinda like the previous issue, this one also contains a lot of "set-up" for things to come. I appreciated that that seemed to be the theme this time around, as every group of characters we've been following makes (or thinks about making) what will surely be impactful decisions. Intriguing stuff. Let's see if some of those start paying off next issue!

The action is really starting to ramp up and what a cliff-hanger this volume left off on!! I can't wait to see if Hazel is able to bring her father back! More great graphics again as always. Love that these are always available on Hoopla too!

Some preliminary thoughts (before I write my full review for the volume):
- Hazel and Squire sneak off to confront Miss Vitch (while Alana is working a double shift) about the potential of bringing back their dads. The key ingredient is wormwood and they'll need a lot of it.
- Petrichor is on a revenge mission, hunting down The Will to avenge Sir Robot.
- Alana is slaving away as a line worker at a fulfilment centre (or more like an Amazon warehouse from hell).
- It's confirmed that Squire and Hazel are now 10 and almost 12 years old.
- Gwendolyn is working on securing a pact between Wreath and the Robot Kingdom.
- Wow, each issue ends with a literal bang!

We once again get glimpses into several of our favourite character’s storylines. I was happy to see some progress in the war talks too, which I honestly don’t know what the outcome will be. This issue was a little slower for me, but it ended in an exciting manner. I’m curious about what is in store for Squire in the future. I have some predictions, but they are a little worrisome! I’m excited to see how this arc will wrap up!

Always a great read!
Comics were always my quick fix to supernatural worlds. For the first time in about 20 years, I've been paying to read this spectacular one since The Atlantic recommended it!

Sometimes I wonder why I read the single issues - because they are always WAY to short. So many questions - so little answers. Can Dad come back? Can ANYONE come back? Is that THE Lying cat and is he really dead? SO many answers that we will MAYBE get in the next issue but who knows. It's Saga. They will probably have a call back to it 5 issues from now. Haha

December 30, 2023I like how this series is about a dystopian universe but also not really. Don't get me wrong, it still describes some dystopian shit, I just mean it's also realistic af. That Amazon warehouse, sheesh.
