Anne Schaeffer’s cookbook lives up to its name: it contains everything a new cook would want to know about slow cookers. Be it a guide to slow cookers, good safety, suggestions for accessories, recipes for stocks and staples, and some pretty unexpected recipes — they’re all here.
But long-time slow cooker lovers will find plenty to like here, too. I adored Crab Chowder with Roasted Veggies, Turkey Pot Pie in a Bowl, Veggie and Hummus Pita or Teriyaki Pork Wraps. There are even recipes for Grilled Steak Sandwiches and Orange Cheesecake! You couldn’t ask for more.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
This cookbook is excellent. Not only are the recipes easy to make with ingredients that you can readily find in most stores, there are ample pictures throughout the book depicting the foods. It's a well organized cook book as well. In addition to offering scrumptious recipes, the author also provides basic crock pot knowledge and instruction at the beginning of the book.
I haven't been able to make any of the recipes yet but I have several highlighted to cook in the near future. My crock pot is one of my favorite kitchen appliances and I use it at least once or twice each week. Therefore, this book will be helpful to provide me with a new recipe here and there.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
I really wanted to like this cookbook and there were certainly parts that I did. My family and I have a very busy schedule and we find it hard to get a nice healthy meal on the table before our 3 year old son needs to go to bed. I was hoping to learn how to utilize my crock pot more as I can get it going in the morning, go to work, pick-up my family, and have dinner ready when we return.
I found myself bookmarking six recipes, but I have only tried one so far, which was the Hearty Ham & Bean Soup. I admit that I did omit the ham because I didn't have any and I was really interested in the bean part of the soup. I had a dry bean soup mix, which I was wanting to use and have had a hard time finding a recipe for, so I was very excited for this one. Besides omitting the ham, I followed the recipe exactly. The end result for me was that my bean soup was more of a bean mush. The beans had become so mushy from absorbing all the liquid that it didn't resemble anything like the picture in the cookbook. My only guess is that it was cooked for too long.
The pictures in the book are one of my favorite parts. I always hate it when a cookbook does not include photos because I want to see what the food I am thinking about making is going to look like. It drives me nuts when there are no photos. The instructions are easy to follow. Each recipe tells you the approximate serving size, but it does not include any nutritional information.
Not including the nutritional information was one of the things I did not like about this book. The biggest pet peeve for me was that this book uses a major short cut and that is that it uses a lot of canned soups for the bases. This was driving me nuts because canned soups are not always the healthiest and its not that hard to create a soup base on your own that is a lot more healthier than what you would get from within a can.
Rating: 2 out of 5 because of the pictures. I wanted to like this cookbook but it is just not the right one for me and my family.
Simply Delicious Crock Pot Cookbook is an appealing and well written collection of recipes by Anne Schaeffer featuring crock pot preparation. Due out 29th Aug 2023 from Fox Chapel Publishing, it's 168 pages and will be available in paperback format.
The crock pot/slow cooker is a workhorse in most western kitchens. The author utilizes basic, readily available ingredients into appealing and appetizing basic "family dinner" dishes. This would make a really solid housewarming gift for newly fledged kids living away from home or newlyweds, as well as a nice go-to for working families who need dinner prepared by the time they get home from work.
Recipes are arranged thematically: soups & stews (the bulk of the recipes), breakfast, sides & snacks, main dishes, dessert, and meals for two. Recipe ingredients are given in a bullet-list sidebar, followed by step-by-step prep instructions. Ingredient measures are provided in imperial (American) units only. The recipes require items which will be easy to find in virtually every local grocery store. Nutritional info is not provided with the recipes.
The book is abundantly and well photographed in color throughout. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate. Although the bulk of the book follows the crockpot style of protein/veg/stock for a hearty soup/stew type dish, there are a gratifying number of variations. The author has also included a number of steamed dishes including a nice orange chocolate cheesecake (with two servings).
Four stars. Well done collection. The author has a clear no-nonsense style of writing and has previously published several other thematic cookbooks.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Synopsis (from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.) ********************************************************* note: the book that comes up on Netgalley via the ISBN is a different title and the cover has a different colour scheme from the one presented on Netgalley (same author though) ********************************************************* There's nothing better than coming home after a long day to find dinner already done! Perfect for family dinners, poker nights, watch parties, and bonfire bonding, this essential cookbook features 101 delicious slow cooker recipes that are easy to make, take minimal effort, and can either feed a couple or a big crowd. This collection of crock pot recipes includes ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert to satisfy any appetite or occasion! From breakfast burritos and blueberry cobbler to jambalaya, beef stew, barbecued ribs, and so much more, Crock Pot Essentials has all the inspiration you need to make the most of your slow cooker. Home cooks of all genders, ages, and appetites will love the delicious, easy recipes inside Crock Pot Essentials!
I love my InstantPot and one reason is the crock pot/slow cooker function. (Like Kleenex and facial tissue, Crock Pot has become synonymous with the word slow cooker.) The recipes are well-written and easily understood and if you cannot find something here to cook and adore, well there is something wrong with your palate as they run the gamut. And they make lots of leftovers as leftovers are the best meal ever...and if you don't agree with that comment, then you (and my ex) are in the same weird boat because who wants to cook something new every night? HIghly recommended: I can see this book flying off our shelves as crock pots are an excellent way to cook in the summer without heating up the kitchen! #shortbutsweetreviews #shortbutsweetreviews
Crock Pot Essentials: 101 Recipes to Make with Your Slow Cooker by Anne Schaeffer is currently scheduled for release on August 1 2023. There’s nothing better than coming home after a long day at work, and dinner is already done! This book features 101 slow cooker recipes that are easy to make, take minimal effort, and can either feed a couple or a big crowd. This collection of crock pot recipes includes ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. From breakfast burritos and blueberry cobbler to jambalaya, beef stew, barbecued ribs, and so more,
Crock Pot Essentials caught my eye because I use my crock pot almost every Thursday. With two picky eaters in the house, my rotation of meals feels pretty boring to me, so I am always looking to try a new recipe or spice combination to liven things up while still getting everyone to eat. I appreciated that vegetarian and other dietary notes were made for applicable recipes and there were some substitution suggestions included. I also liked the serving suggestions, like some sandwiches recipes following the soup recipes they would pair with nicely. . One note- if you have made the switch to metric measurements you will have some converting to do, since all the recipes are in imperial measurements. I did find some recipes in the book, particularly for pot luck meals and lazy days at home, that I might try. I did also find a few things that I might use to add a new twist or flavor to things I already make. This is a solid collection for those that might be new to using their crock pot- but for long time users this is a book I would check out from the library rather than adding to your cookbook collection.
Looking for new recipes to make in your slow cooker? Crock Pot Essentials: 101 Recipes to Make with Your Slow Cooker Cookbook of Fast and Easy Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert Ideas with Minimal Prep and Quick Clean-Up by veteran cookbook writer, Anne Shaeffer, is full of appealing, innovative recipes that will inspire cooks to pull out their slow cookers again and start cooking.
This excellent cookbook covers some of the basics of slow cooking, and includes an excellent chart to customize your recipes to the slow cooker size. Since there are dozens of sizes of slow cookers on the market, this is especially helpful.
There are over a hundred recipes in this book, with several mouthwatering soups, and includes sandwiches and wraps to accompany them. There are also several accompaniments to go with the other recipes such as quick breads. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by easy instructions. Most of the recipes have minimal ingredients to make for minimum hands-on time to put dishes together. There are beautiful, professional photographs of every dish, which makes this a 5-star cookbook for anybody who cooks.
One bonus is a chapter on meals in the slow cooker designed for two; this helps small families, and the recipes, such as Bacon-Apple Chicken and Shrimp Creole are mouthwatering. This cookbook is highly recommended and will help cooks prepare more innovative and delicious meals.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I love my Crock Pot so when I saw a Cookbook with more recipes I quickly requested it!
This cookbook lives up to its name. Simple, delicious and easy recipes! It begins with an Introduction about your Crock Pot and other kitchen accessories and food safety tips. The book is divided into Six sections - Soups and Stews, Breakfast, Mains, Sides and Snacks, Desserts, and Menu for Two.
Each recipe includes a picture of the finished product which I love. I can't wait for the Fall weather to try some of the Soups and Stews which are always a hit with my family 🍜 There are many of the traditional soups and stews but one that I will definitely try to make is the, "Beef Chipotle Chili." My mouth just waters writing about it! 😋 I like just how easy some of the recipes are and I'll be hosting a Barbecue/Cookout this coming weekend and I'm going to make the, "Creamy loaded corn" recipe.
There's just too many good sounding recipes to mention but if you love your Crock Pot like me I wholeheartedly recommend this Cookbook!
Thanks to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for granting me access to this Advance Reader Copy.
Thank you NetGalley, Anne Schaeffer and Fox Chapel Publishing for the ARC of Crock Pot Essentials. This is my personal review. I am a cookbook fanatic! I love having a variety of cookbooks to browse in and find my next delicious meal. Crock Pot Essentials is a great addition to my collection. The cover grabbed my attention right away. This cookbook has photos in it that will make your mouth water just looking at them. I love having my house filled with great smells after being out all day and knowing that dinner is almost done when I get home. I found so many recipes to make in this cookbook. Everything from Sausage and Egg Bake for breakfast to Turkey and Wild Rice soup and ending with Deluxe Brownies. All the recipes are easy to make, and the variety will please your whole family. The publication date is August 1, 2023. This will make a great gift for the upcoming holiday season.
Get your crock pot ready! Here come 101 mouth watering recipes, all guaranteed to delight your friends and family and save you time in the kitchen. Anne Schaeffer’s well organized cookbook begins with a few basics: crockpot size to adapt to recipes, tools and food safety. Then it’s on to the recipes! Soups and Stews begin. My favorites are French Onion and Tomato Basil Soups. Breakfasts, Sides and Snacks (Loaded Potatoes!) and Mains follow. The best section is saved for last. Meals for Two includes all the other categories and provides just what it says. There are easy to make dinners that are excellent for a single cook or an senior couple. Leftovers can be frozen and saved for another meal. This section is worth the price of the book as most slow cooker recipes serve a family or a crowd. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Fox Chapel Publishing and Anne Schaeffer for this ARC.
I love using my crockpot all year because it is easy and doesn’t heat up the kitchen on warm days. This book has provided me with so many new and delicious recipes—just what I needed to perk up my repertoire. Everything from breakfast, soups, snacks, mains and meals for two are covered in this book. The author has taken great pains to provide step-by-step instructions that are adaptable to all skill levels. There are loads of color photographs and in-depth advice on how to adapt a recipe to your slow cooker size—amazing! There’s nothing worse than trying to figure that out on my own. I’m so excited to try the Teriyaki Pork and the Canadian Bacon Chowder. My thanks to #AnneSchaeffer, #FoxChapelPublishingCompany, and #NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This will be a great cookbook for some cooks. The recipes are easy and there are colorful photos for them all. It wasn’t a good fit for me since there is no nutritional information for the recipes (an automatic deduction of a star for me) and most of the recipes use packaged, processed ingredients like cans of soup, jars of sauces, frozen readymade ingredients and so on. I prefer to cook simple recipes from scratch. Most of the recipes are SAD (standard American diet) types which will please most American readers but not those who follow special diets like gluten free, paleo or vegan. It will be a great book for those who want “homemade” meals with little work though.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book via NetGalley.
Everyone can use more crock pot recipes and these are great. We sometimes fall into a rut when we cook dinner and we need to add some variety on occasions. These recipes will be added to the family rotation very quickly. Whether you are looking for something for a regular Tuesday night or for a special party you will find what you are looking for. It might be hardy soup or stew for a cold winter night or a breakfast casserole you will love them. Have you ever made a cheesecake in your crock pot? Now you can you have the perfect recipe. There's nothing better after a long day at work than coming home to the smell of dinner already cooking. So pull out that crock pot and get started on tomorrow's dinner.
Crock Pot Essentials truly lives up to its name, providing an essential collection of slow cooker recipes that offers a go-to for easy and delicious meals. Coming home to a ready-made dinner is a game-changer, perfect for busy days or gatherings with friends and family. The variety of recipes, from breakfast to dessert, ensures there's something to please every palate and occasion. I particularly appreciated the thoughtful organization and layout of the book, making it a breeze to find the perfect recipe. The inclusion of cooking for two was a fantastic bonus, catering to different needs. This cookbook has simplified my cooking routine and introduced me to unique dishes I hadn't tried before. A must-have addition to any home cook's collection!
As an avid crock pot user, I own plenty of cookbooks to go along with it. I was intrigued to check this one out, as you never know what you’ll find.
It’s starts with your usual guidelines to safe crock pot cooking and then we dive into recipes including veggie, beef and chicken stock, appetizers, mains, desserts, snacks…and they’re clearly labeled if they’re vegetarian which I found to be helpful! Every single recipe included a photo as well, which is not common in cookbooks in general and I absolutely love that. The visual aid makes me want to cook the recipe so much more than an ingredients list ever will.
I feel this would be a solid addition to any crock pot kitchen!
I just reviewed Crock Pot Essentials by Anne Schaeffer. #CrockPotEssentialsFoxChapelPublishing #NetGalley [NetGalley URL] To say I'm excited about this cookbook is an understatement! This is going to be my go-to during football season. What's better than putting your meal in the crockpot on Saturday morning, then having it ready in time for the football game later that night? I can't think of anything. There are so many good recipes in here, and they will be easy enough for my teenagers to make, they both love to cook. The added charts in the front for serving size and crockpot size are something I didn't even realize I needed to make my life easier until now. This is a must buy cookbook!
I have a crock pot and I rarely use it and there are so many interesting and enticing recipes included in Crock-Pot Essentials. Guess who will be using their crock-pot more often these days. There are so many great recipes in Crock-Pot Essentials I don’t even no what to try my hands at preparing first breakfast, lunch, dinner, meals for two, and/or desserts. I had no idea that so many food items could go into making a great crock-pot meal. Love how the book is broken down into different sections with such easy-to-follow recipes and colorful illustrations.
I received an ARC via NetGalley Fox Chapel Publishing Cooking, Food & Wine and I am leaving my review voluntarily.
If you are looking for the perfect yet simple cookbook this book is it. I am always looking for crock-pot meals that are easy enough to do and still satisfy the family. The beginning of the book has great guides to help even a novice get started. There is a page with temperature guides for meat and a chart to help you convert times and temps for your size of crock-pot. Throughout the book are suggestions for what to make to pair with recipes. Our favorite was the Savory Beef stew. Just the right amount of ingredients to keep it simple yet flavorful and easy instructions to follow. We really enjoyed this cookbook.
If you’re looking for some yummy recipes to have for dinner, then you’ll love this cookbook. I especially liked that they’re recipes to cook in your crockpot. My favorite recipe is the Savory Beef Stew and my husband especially enjoyed because it calls for ketchup instead of canned tomatoes. Then, there’s the Cheesy Potato Soup. This is so good, but I think I might make it with potato chunks next time. Grab your copy and try to decide what you want to make first.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
An excellent cookbook! The basic crock pot instruction at the beginning of the book makes this very accessible to people new to the appliance, while the conversion charts are handy for all users. I personally always have an issue with crockpot recipes, as I have a rather small 4.5 quart one and it seems all the recipes are made for bigger ones. The conversion chart was enlightening for me. I haven't been able to make any of the recipes yet, but I have bookmarked several and look forward to them!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is the perfect cookbook for those new to a slow cooker. It teaches you the very basics and then provides delicious recipes. There are no hard-to-find, expensive ingredients and everything we tried so far was delicious. And who doesn't love being able to do minimal prep, dump ingredients in a pot, let it cook overnight or while you are at work, and come home to a delicious, hot meal?
Mouth-watering pictures, great recipes! What else could you want?
Thanks, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are mine and freely given.
This is a must-have to make use of our pots with so much variety, I love the design of the pages with amazing photos and appetite the book starts by teaching us to make stocks. The recipes are easy to follow and I can't wait to try some fav like lasagna and mac and cheese. Great for someone like me that doesn't cook but loves to eat great food. Gives me lots of ideas for different times of the day.
2.5 stars! It’s not really the correct season to fire up the crockpot but I’m always looking for recipe inspiration. Unfortunately, the pictures in this weren’t great and so much of enjoying a cookbook for me is drooling over the photos. That said, I’m excited to try the loaded tater tot “bake” and creamy broccoli cheese soup. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
Absolutely delicious looking meals! We love our crock pot. It's so easy to prepare meals in, walk away and do whatever it is you need to do, and come back to a delicious meal. Schaeffer presents a very good book here. Things that I have never thought of trying in a crock pot. Well written, easily understood recipes, and excellent photos. This is a book everyone should have in their kitchen. I really look forward to trying many of them.
This is a decent variety of recipes and most seem to favor simple and easy to obtain ingredients. However, there's nothing here to make this book stand out against other crock port books. Photos are kind of flat compared to other cookbooks I've read
Overall, this would be a good book for someone just starting out. Students, newlyweds, etc.
Thanks to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for granting me access to this Advance Reader Copy.
I am always looking for new recipes for my crockpot because I love using it for dinners and holidays. This cookbook had a lot of good recipes and I loved the photography! Stuffed Peppers in a crockpot? Yes, it worked and it was delicious! I thank Netgalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this cookbook.
I read this cookbook for free thanks to NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book had a lot of really good recipes. It was heavy of soup recipes. I found a few ideas that I will try with my family. There were a lot more I want to try, but my kids are very picky eaters!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. I found some recipes I definitely want to try. I also liked that you could scale the recipe to the size of the Crock Pot a person has. I like that the vegetarian recipes were marked so you wouldn’t have to constantly be flipping through the book.
I like the layout and the recipes are easy enough to follow. The pictures of the finished food are clear and look delicious. I also really like how there are recommendations of recipes that go well together. And the recipes for 2 are great.
Definitely recommend for anyone with a crockpot who doesn’t always have time or energy to cook dinner.
As someone who is busy and struggles to prepare easy meals at the end of the day, I rely on my crock-pot A LOT and I'm always looking for new recipes. This book has great options for new crock-potters and seasoned users. Now that fall is coming and the weather is getting cooler, I'm ready to dive in and try some recipes from this book.
