There were so many things that made me really like this one. First off when I first started reading this I got hooked within the first few pages. But then it kinda went a little "meh" for me, but then it picked up. We start off with Alberic of Chester, who is a soldier for the King, and in aiding with a battle, has earned a knighthood and a holding. This holding belonged to one of the men he helped bring down, and had fought against the King. So he is ordered by the King, to take charge of his new holding, marry one of the daughter, have one sent to the Abbey, and the other sent to court. Easy enough right? Well the one woman he is drawn to Gwendolyn, is not your normal English lady. She is passionate and independent. Gwendolyn is outraged upon hearing of her father and brother's death, and must get her father's ring from Alberic so she can right a wrong. But what she doesn't expect to happen is to fall for Alberic herself and realize he was her destined match. What we have here is a love story that is set in the mid 1100's, with a mix of old legends and magic. Its quite different from what you assume from the synopsis...so don't let it confuse you. this is a story that slowly won me over, and at first I was going to set it aside, but I really wanted to give this one a shot. So glad I did because this story, while, it didn't WOW me, it did make a very good impression. I enjoyed seeing Alberic and Gwen slowly learn each other, about how love really works, and how you build on it. I am interested in the legend of this ring, really fascinating and has quite a bit of historical relelvance to it. Eager to see what happens to her two other sisters...definitely plan on reading more of Shari Anton. Its a slow and warm love story that worked its way to my heart, with a hint of sibling drama, fascinating intrigue and a dose of magic to keep you drawn to this pair....spellbinding to the end!

I was kind of disappointed by the way the summary tricked me. I was expected a Gwen to cast a spell to cast out Alberic only to realise too late that the ring was on his finger and that she'd have seduce the ring off of him.
The story I got was lovely and sweet but not really what I expected. It also took me days to read as the layout of the PDF I had was horrible, but that's not really the author's fault is it?
So, did I like it? Yes. Will I read the rest of the trilogy? Most Likely.

Lovely romance even though I wasn't sure if I liked Alberic in the beginning.

Suddenly inheriting a kingdom came as a shock to Alberic, a humble, brave, honorable and loyal knight; but the kingdom of Camelen is accommodating to their new lord and Alberic in turn is committed in learning the duties as lordship and getting know the land and it's people.
That's the easy part, but claiming Gwendolyn as his wife will be no easy task.
To let the man who slew her father and brother claim lordship over Camelen is outrageous, but Gwendolyn is left with no other choice. Or so it seems. In order to reclaim her father's kingdom her only hope is to invoke a spell using an ancient magical ring, but will it work?
A very sweet medieval romance with a touch of...midnight magic!

Pese a ser un libro romántico, también podemos observar en el acción, aventuras, magia, mitos y leyendas. Esto hace que se destaque de otros libros de este tipo.
Los protagonistas también son diferentes, el masculino es muy varonil pero acepta sus limitaciones y tiene la mente abierta a un mundo que el no conoce, es humilde y empático. La protagonista, Gwen, es muy valiente y persistente, además de que apoya a su esposo sí o sí.
Es un libro si quieres leer algo liviano y entretenido.

More of a 3.5 rating than a 3 but giving the book 4 stars would have been too generous. I felt like a lot of the intimate moments didn't go along with the overall storyline and at times seemed to take away from the historical fiction aspect of the book. Other than that it was still a good read.
