She told me she was hard to love. I told her that wasn’t true. If only I could make her believe that. Sarah’s trauma never fully healed, and now it’s back to break her all over again. So, I take her hand, ready to fight side by side with her. Until her pain becomes too much for her to bear, and suddenly I’m fighting for her. Her attention. Her love. Her mental health. Her. What happens when the person you love gets lost in a downward spiral? You stand strong and keep fighting for them, even when they don't know how to fight for themselves. At least, that's what I'm going to do. Because I've never loved someone the way I love Sarah. I've never been loved by anyone the way she loves me. And I am never giving up on her, just like I'm never giving up on us. We’re going to have our happy ending, even if we have to go through hell to get there. Heartbreak Like This is the sixth book in the Friends Like This series and the second book of Sarah and Joel’s story. This is a direct continuation of book five and all the previous books in the series. If you haven’t read them yet, head back to the beginning and jump on the roller coaster in Friends Like This.
Bethany Monaco Smith is a writer-mom. When she’s not busy hanging with her boys, she’s writing cozy small town romances with lots of heart, a bit of steam, and all the feels. She loves happily-ever-afters and cries at every emotional moment, whether reading, writing, or watching. Part two of their story so make sure you read the others first or you’ll be completely lost.
Sarah and Joel’s happy ending is well deserved! Angst city!! Definitely a roller coaster for with emotions. They both deal with very real issues so check trigger warnings beforehand. I loved how steadfast Joel is but happy his own problems were addressed and dealt with. Sarah, bless her, went through the gamut of problems and I’m so happy to see her come out on the other side.
One of my favorite parts was all the boys talking about growing beards. Lol I’m a beard girl so that was funny 😆 😆😍
I enjoyed this book and series! Make sure to check out all of Bethany’s other books and leave reviews! 💖💖

P.s- I really do want everyone to read this book but it deals with a ton of mental health issues, so please do check the trigger warnings before.
Wow! This book and Sarah and Joel’s story was just wow! I fall so fast and hard into these books and love to read this group of friends. I was frantically turning pages to get to the end to see what happened. Only to be super excited to see where this story goes next!
Holy Shit. This is the third book in 24 hours I have finished. I have read the entire series and I tried patiently to wait for this one. And I’m so glad I did but now what do I do!! Bethany you are a wicked genious and I shall sit here and wait for the next installment!!
Lately I’ve been just wanting to watch reruns of old shows that I love and reread books that I already know the ending to. My comfort blankets if you like. With this series it’s familiar enough to feel like a comfort blanket whilst also giving you all the feels! You slip right back into this friendship group and pickup where book no. 5 finished.
Sarah and Joel both have their own demons to face in this book - some in obvious ways and others more subtle. There are some very sensitive subjects so please do check trigger warnings if you need to. I really liked the fact that Bethany put a special message at the beginning of the book for those that might not even usually think to check the trigger warnings. And when the dedication reads “To everyone who continues to spiral up… even if you bounce off rock bottom first” you know you are really in for a rollercoaster ride.
Maybe my reviews of these are repetitive in that I say the same things about them but it’s because it’s true - no matter where the trauma behind the storylines comes from in these books Bethany handles the mental health representation with such realism and sensitivity. If you’ve ever felt even an iota of anxiety, depression and more then you will recognise those feelings. What I really admire is that the characters don’t just wake up one day and feel better . . . Just like in life these things take time to build up and time to heal from.
We can all be vulnerable at times and we all need some help every now and then, even the strongest of us.
Slipping back into this series is like a brand new season of an old favourite tv show (it always bring the One Tree Hill vibes for me and I love the pop culture references included!) I’m really enjoying seeing the group mature and face different challenges as they get older. Both personally and professionally. The scene where the men are discussing growing beards and moving in with their girlfriends is so accurate and funny!
Be prepared to truly have your heart broken with this one. But don’t worry, it’ll be healed by the end!
A roller coaster of feels as usual! But a MUST READ!!!
At this point we know that if Bethany writes it I'm going to read it, live in it, obsess over it and then I'm going to create all the things for it.
I'm still trying to process this book because it was a rollercoaster ride, full of all the feels. The amount emojis i sent Bethany when i early read this because i just couldnt put it into words... (theres a sticker!) This book lived up to it name! But don't let it fool you!! It's heartbreaking, yes! Bethany breaks you BUT then she heals you in the most beautiful ways!! She gives you a real life story. You can relate to both Sarah and Joel's characters, you can put yourself in their shoes. You feel all the feels and then some but then she gives you all that growth! The growth these characters go through. Sarah and Joel see it all in this book. And it tests their relationship in ways that it hadn't before. Not only with eachother, but with themselves and the ones around them. But their strength and will to fight is something I love about the both of them.
Of course I absolutely love that mental health has played such a big role in this series! It's not talked about enough.
Sarah and Joel were my couple! I knew I would relate to her story the most! I could out myself in her shoes and relate to what she was going through. & Joel will forever be my OG Bethany book boyfriend!! And I will fight for him! 😅😅
This book was about fighting through fears, anxiety, depression, grief and coming out on the otherside stronger and wiser! Healing!!! Growing!!! Knowing that you aren't alone and it's okay to ask for help! Also knowing when you aren't getting the appropriate help and seeking a second opinion.. leaning on your friends and family in times of need!!! The friend and family dynamic in these books! For that sole purpose I never want this series to end!!
Heartbreak like this is the sixth book in the Friends Like This series. I am always saying you don’t need to read books in order in most series, but I am not suggesting it here. The first few books were Aaron and Rae’s story and this continues Sarah and Joel’s story. I think at the least you need to read the couple’s books in order but you will get the most out of it by reading them all in order.
What I like about the author’s books is they aren’t just sunshine and roses and they take the time to deal with real issues in real relationships. I am such a fan of the chase and love those types of romances, but this one takes it a step further and shows how a couple makes it work. If you have triggers, I would suggest researching this book at the author’s website before reading as it deals with mental illness.
Sarah and Joel were side characters in Aaron and Rae’s stories, so I already knew and liked them. This one picks up directly from book five. I felt all of the emotions as I read about their journey and struggles. The book I read really affects my mood, so I was drawn in and a little sad when I read this one. Of course I love how the whole group of friends are always there to support any other in need. That is what makes this series extra special for me. All the connections and all the deep friendships. Not just the romantic love, but all types of love.
The other thing you get in this continuing story is checking in with characters that aren’t the MCs. And we also got a few more POV characters this time around. This always makes me happy.
If you’re ready for a read about a real couple and real life struggles, you should check out this one.
Sometimes you find stories that you don’t care what happens to the characters through hardships…but then you get stories like this, and you NEED to know every single detail. You find yourself craving every little nuance, even if it destroys little pieces of your heart along the way. Sure, you know darn well those little pieces are healed by the end of the story - but all those cracks and breaks let you feel all the feelings.
Joel and Sarah wormed their way into my heart faster than I could’ve imagined. I think there’s something to be said about characters you can relate to in multiple ways. Yes, we had Aaron and Rae, and everything they went through…but Joel and Sarah somehow have even more depth worth uncovering. The way that Bethany puts mental health out there, and doesn’t hide from it, is truly a testament to her writing. We left the last book on a cliffhanger, and started this one with a bang. Honestly seeing both Sarah and Joel spiral in their own separate ways gave light to how mental health can be different person to person. We also got further glimpses of Miles, and oof…make sure you read this one until the end for more on that.
I almost never write reviews that don’t just give little bits and pieces away…but this one is it. I feel I can say without a doubt that Sarah and Joel will forever live inside my mind and heart for a very long time. Thank you, dearest Bethany, for writing a story that tackles mental health without hiding from it. And for giving us all a story that can truly take you there.
What an emotional rollercoaster ride this book sends you on. Heartbreak Like this is the continuation of Joel and Sarah's story and boy make sure you have a box of tissues with you. Bethany Monaco Smith delivers a book that will have your stomach in knots, and tears rolling down your cheeks, but at the same time being hopeful, happy and loving the way that Joel cares for Sarah. He watched the woman that he absolutely loves deal with such trauma and heartbreak that he starts to suffer as well but puts his health and happiness on the back burner. The ups and downs that they go through just brings them that much closer. Yes, true love is pushed away but when that love is so strong nothing will ever truly let it leave. Was I an emotional wreck reading this book? Yes, but I would not change a thing. Is this a book that is impossible to put done? Yes, because it pulls you in and before you know it you feel like you are part of the group and want to do anything for Sarah and Joel. The ending had me needing Miles's book now. He has always intrigued me with his demeanour. Definitely pick up Heartbreak Like This, but be prepared to shed some tears and fall in love with Joel and Sarah's love story.
What an emotional rollercoaster! Sarah & Joel have loved each other for so long and are finally together, working on their happily ever after....but nothing worth having is easy it seems for these two. Sarah is thrown when her bio-parents suddenly re-enter her life and trying to deal with all that baggage as well as school, work, family, friends and Joel, it all become too much and she starts to spiral down. Joel tries to help Sarah as much as he can, but can feel her slipping away and ignores his own mental well-being trying to be strong for Sarah. When it all becomes too much and things come to ahead, they have to decide if they are going to do the hard work or stay in their own misery. The part with Sarah and her Grandfather having a heart to heart talk, moved me to tears and I loved the term they come up with to spiral up. The friends and families all rally and help each other out while still discovering new things about each other and really rooting for one another. There are some really beautiful moments in this book as well as some really hard things that could be TW for some. Overall, I loved it and can't wait for the next one to see what happens next!
I have one warning to give out for this book and that is have tissues to ready. “Heartbreak like this” focuses on Joel and Sarah and continues on from the last book. Bethany has yet again done an amazing job of not only intertwining each book as the character develops and grows but also brings the emotional baggage and stress that we all go through. I love it when I can read a book and it feels like I am pulled in the story, and this is something that Bethany does so well she writes from her heart and brings us on the journey making us feel that we are in essence that group of friends. These stories always bring a reality to them and in Sarah and Joel’s case it centers around the anxiety that they suffer, both from a physically obvious standpoint in Sarah and then later in Joel who has kept his concerns and issues close to his heart. This book has multiple POV which I love as we are not just focused on the story of Joel and Sarah but on the wider circle of friends and how their friendships are as strong as ever.
I have been waiting for this book since I read the last sentence of Together Like This. This book starts exactly where that one ends, so you do not miss anything. This book really pulled at my heartstrings. The emotions I felt while reading this one were all over the place. As someone that suffers from anxiety and depression, I felt for Sarah and Joel. I am so glad that they had each other and a fantastic support system around them.
I loved that all the friends were there. We even got to read some parts from their POV. I loved that Gram was still a part of this one in some way.
I am excited for Miles's book and I cannot wait to see what is next for this amazing group of friends!
This book is part of the Friends Like This series. Each book builds upon the previous one and are not meant to be read as standalones. Please make sure to review the content warnings before reading this book.
Sarah and Joel are together and Sarah has just graduated college when an unexpected person from her past makes an appearance. This is not a healthy relationship and that takes a toll on her - physically and emotionally. Throughout her spiral, Joel does what he can to support and love her.
"You are the sandpaper, though. You smooth those rough edges without trying to change me. And I love you for it."
This story crushed my heart, but then put it back together again.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, no one does friends to lovers like Bethany.
"I was afraid my rough edges might hurt you. I forgot you're my sandpaper."
Another super sweet read by one of my favourite authors ever!! So great to be back in the world of the IDA lovers exploring Sarah and Joel's romance.
This story was a lot heavier in terms of the topics covered around mental health and depression but it was written in such a beautiful and realistic way, you can't help but fall further in love with all the characters and appreciate they handle conflict and continually support each other. **SWOON**
Bethany's books always make you feel like a part of their world and I want to say I'm so proud of these characters and watching them grow together. There is something very special about the community that they have built together and it is an absolute treat to be able to read and be a part of their world.
I loved this book so much and couldn't put it down! Heartbreak Like This is a beautiful and emotional love story between Joel and Sarah.
Two of my favorite parts of the book were the "Blind Date with a book" Valentine's Day scene and the one where they're reading in bed together. I thought that both of those scenes were so cute. 🥰
And this was one of my favorite quotes from Heartbreak Like This; “I can neither confirm nor deny if a romance novel was involved. What I can say is the scruffy look is hot.”
I've loved every book that I've read in the Friends Like This series so far and can't wait to read Miles' and Amelia's book!
P.S. Make sure that you download and read the bonus novella linked at the end of the book. 🙂
Bethany has done it again! I am a big fan of continuing stories and characters and I can not get enough of this group of friends. This book more than the rest broke my heart with the family journeys that both Sarah and Joel went through. I cried with Sarah and Joel multiple times and I adored how strong Joel was for Sarah, even while he was hurting. The continuing development of the side characters is another reason why I love Bethany's writing so much. I love that we still get to see them grow and develop, even though they are not the mains of the story. We get our happy ending, but make sure you have tissues! It will give you ALL the feels!
I absolutely love this book. There was something so special about Sarah and Joel. I don't usually like tear-jerker books, but I feel in love with this one. Bethany Monaco Smith captured the beauty and tragicness of grief in this book. I felt the depiction of depression and anxiety in this book helped the story and character development. It's story that those with depression and anxiety can relate to. Smith, also, accurately captured the struggle and the difficult journey healing take us on. Both characters struggled and came out on the other side stronger. I love this book. I had to have tissues on deck while reading.
It's honestly hard to believe that I had never picked up one of Bethany's books before this summer, especially because I feel like they are so deeply ingrained into my heart now.
Heartbreak Like This picks up where Sarah and Joel's story left off, and from page one, I knew my emotions were going to be dragged through the mud before we found any type of peace (and I was right!) The amount of soul searching and shadow work that had to be done by all of our characters made me remember how ugly and lonely your early twenties can be, even when you're surrounded by people. HBL made me laugh, cry, UGLY CRY, kick my feet, and even read one-handed (iykyk), but the real surprise comes at the end. The real hallmark of a good writer is one that can keep you engaged through a multi-book story, and Bethany always leaves me wanting more. I'm ready to see what happens with Miles!
Books like this is why I love friends-to-lovers tropes. Heartbreak Like This, dives deeper into Joel and Sarah’s character and relationship. Unfortunately, it is anything but magical. The issues that arise cause so much heartbreak, anger, and sadness. Their mental health and individual strength are tested that you want to break for them just to see them struggle less. But in the end, each obstacle they overcome shapes them into human beings they are proud of. The real-life situations and issues really trigger you as a reader, and helps you connect with the characters emotionally. Overall, a great series, and a good read!
Sarah and Joel’s love story continues in “Heartbreak Like This,” and I have to say that I thought this book was both swoony and spicy, but also extremely angsty. Sarah and Joel both go through so much in this book; they had a lot of emotional, heartfelt, and angsty interactions that made me empathize with their situation. Sarah is so freaking strong, and I know she has a lot of moments where she deals with self doubt and anxiety, but she manages to rise above it, and I think that’s wonderful. As for Joel, I love how supportive he is of Sarah. He’s so sweet and kindhearted, and he always seems to know exactly what she needs from him. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series!
Sarah and Joel are couple goals. Yes, they had it rough with their mental health issues, ( great representation) but the way they love each other is so heartwarming. There were definitely hard moments, tears were cried and there could have been a hint of ugly crying at 1am. Bethany has become a writer I’ve grown to love over the course of this series. The way she delves into real issues with real emotions is something I appreciate. I am so invested in this little town of Ida. Ooh, almost forgot that cliffhanger. I did not see that coming. Miles, what a shocker.
Thank you Bethany for the arc and this is my (late, oops sorry) honest review.
This book had me in my feels BEFORE I finished chapter 1 and it kept me there for the rest of the book. Sad tears, angry tears, happy tears...all the tears! I love Sarah. I think I'm more of a Rae, but Sarah has moments that speak to me too. All of Bethanys characters feel so very real and I'd love to be a part of this 'cult' any day! Cannot wait to see what happens with Miles in the next book. *side note for Bethany, I do believe we need a novella like the other one!
This book like so many of hers that I have read has made me cry. Seeing the heartbreak and heartache that Sarah goes through and seeing how Joel struggles with his own demons while helping Sarah. This story is a great representation of mental health awareness and it proves it’s okay to not be okay, it’s okay to need and ask for help, that no one is truly alone.
Watching them struggle through to get to their happy ending made the possibly escaped tears all worth it. I swear every story I read just is 10 times better then the last!
This book will absolutely pull at your heart strings. You feel the heartbreak the characters go through. She’s so wonderful at making you feel exactly what the characters are feeling, as if you’re right there in their friend group.
This is a couple I’ve been watching throughout her series. They have both gone through so much, and deserve so much love. While it’s not an easy road for them, it’s amazing to watch how they navigate all of life’s ups and downs together.
Bethany sends you on a EMOTIONAL ride with this book. I'm just saying, it was heartbreaking but like sometimes you just need one of those books to make you feel better.
The storyline kept you guessing, kept you needing to read more and more and MORE until you were sad cause you were at the end of the story. Everything about this story made me feel connected with the story. The amazing details. The beautiful technique in the writing. The love in the relationship.
*Healing *Traumatic Childhood *Mental Health Awareness *Spicy
We finally get to see Sarah and Joel’s happiness but only after major downward spirals and a traumatic rock bottom, in true Sarah fashion. I absolutely loved this book and loved getting to see where all my favorite Ida characters are in life. Bethany does such a great job with this series and this book does not disappoint in the least. I had so many different emotions while reading it and felt right along with the characters. Well done! I CANNOT wait for Miles' spicy story to come out!!!
I liked the storyline, it was beautiful. I really like reading about this friendship group. They are close and its wonderful and endearing to read about such a closely bonded group of friends.
The story is so heartbreaking but so heartfelt. I love that the friends each have eachother's backs.
I liked the ending, where we got a few other POV, especially Miles's.
I'm so excited for his story.
I found the chapters to be very long and I struggled to get through it but it was such a beautiful story I couldn't not finish it.
This book is an absolute masterpiece ending for Sarah and Joel. Bethany’s rep for mental health, trauma and the devastation it can leave was so on point for what each of them had been through. I have been a fan of Bethanys since I read the first book in this series (and I have since read all her work) and each book keeps getting better and this just proves that point! I’m excited to see what is next for this amazing group!
I need the next book, stat! This one was incredible! I love seeing all of these characters grow and become closer with each struggle they face. I never want their story to end! Thank you so much for letting me continue to be an arc for you. I love your writing and continue to be in awe of what you write!
What an amazing conclusion to Sarah and Joel’s story. The title only tells part of the story. There is heartbreak, yes. But also love and amazing support through this group of chosen family.
Bethany Monaco Smith has never backed down from addressing subjects that others may turn away from. The way she addresses mental health in these books is inspiring.
