Cliff Jacobson is one of North America's most respected outdoors writers, wilderness guides, national and foreign consultants, and is the most published canoeing/camping writer of this century. He is a professional canoe guide and outfitter, a wilderness canoeing and camping consultant and the author of over a dozen top-selling books on camping and canoeing— numerous titles have been translated into Spanish, German, French and Turkish with sales approaching one million copies.

An accomplished canoeist in his own right, Cliff was recently recognized by the American Canoe Association (ACA) which presented him with the Legends of Paddling Award and inducted him into the ACA Hall of Fame.

Read the first 30% then let the library have it back. Worth finishing if I ever decide...to strike off on an Arctic expedition.

(Yes, the subject matter is much more adventurous than the title suggested....)

It's well written, though, and an intriguing window into a world I'll likely never take part in. Worth it for character fodder if nothing else.

No stars yet? Why? This was a great book for me, a neophyte canoeist. He has decided opinions on gear and methods that, true enough are self serving (a la Piragis catalog) but come on, how helpful are a person's reflections on gear etc. Americans are gear hounds any way and I appreciated his recommendations. The book is a collection of pearls of hard won wisdom and therefore I rated it very highly. Hope the aficionados find it as helpful as I did. Thank you Cliff.

The most comprehensive book I've found. Great for planning a trip, reviewing basic skills, and researching gear.

The holy book for those who paddle. An incredible reference guide for issues such as gear, repair, packing, and on and on. It's a big book, so just don't bring it on the river. Ok, Todd?

This book is still somewhat relevant almost 38 years after it was written although I read the Expanded and Updated Edition that published in 1989. The original was published in 1983.
