How To Survive An EMP Attack: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide On How To Stay Alive When An EMP Strikes the United States

Rate this book
An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a pulse of electromagnetic radiation that may not always result from an attack. Solar flares or significant volcanic eruptions are two examples of large-scale, natural EMPs. A lightning strike would be an example of a localized EMP only affecting the object struck. However, an EMP attack results from a nuclear device detonating in the atmosphere above the target or even a specialized weapon that emits a fluctuating magnetic field.

The immediate results would be similar in a natural event and an confusion, panic, and the disruption of everyday life. Nature wouldn’t maliciously do this to us, but an enemy would. The difference lies in what follows. Think about trying to buy toilet paper at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Now imagine the utter panic that would grip all the population centers affected by rolling blackouts, non-existent cell service, dead computers, and no way to get any information on the situation.

An EMP is not some magical destructive force we cannot understand. EMPs, like all forces of science, follow strict rules and are limited in their capabilities based on those rules. On the one hand, you have the size and intensity of the blast. On the other hand, you have the object in question, the electrical components that keep the device functional, and the intentional or unintentional shields in place to protect those delicate components.

In reality, an EMP won’t kill all electronics, depending on the blast's height or location. However, this guide will focus on the worst-case the typical everything-is-dead trope Hollywood loves to portray. Not because this is the most likely outcome but because if we prepare for the worst, we won’t find ourselves at the mercy of the situation.

If you have the expendable income, by all means, get the tools and the training to be as prepared as you would like, but bear in mind that an EMP attack may never happen. In recorded history, an EMP attack has never occurred to any human population, but I’m not saying it won't. In today's climate, an EMP attack is a genuine possibility. This brings me back to my point that a little bit of preparedness goes a long way in the event of any emergency.

Unlike in the movies, cars don’t swerve off the road into a lake when struck by an EMP. Sure, your engine and radio would die, but the brakes would still work, and maneuvering your vehicle to the side of the road isn't too tricky without power steering. Airplanes might suffer some damage from a large-scale EMP strike, but we can’t know for sure. As I’ve said we’ve never experienced one before. I do know that airplanes survive lightning strikes all the time.

Instead of fearing what you see in movies and TV, use this worst-case scenario as a blueprint for what you can do to improve your survival chances.
