“…and to those who shall inevitably yearn for the forbidden; we pray you may never earn your share of the wounds we who forbade it are burdened. Heed our solemn declaration, lest you discover the forbidden to be rarely so without reason...”

On the border of the Ameyalli forest resides an ancient tribe. They have long survived on their ancient rituals, worship of Mother Earth, and strict adherence to the forbidden.

Lia and Kai are siblings who dream of entering the forbidden forest during the allure of nightfall. Night after night, they gaze longingly at the dancing lights above it and the warm glow of purple coming from within.

When Lia finally breaks away from the village’s heavy hand and enters the forest, her dream is fulfilled. But at great

The tribe’s dark history comes to light, Mother Earth’s true nature is brought into doubt, and the Ameyalli tribe learns that nothing is ever forbidden without reason.

I don't normally do somewhat in-depth reviews but because this book literally has 0 reviews I thought it would be best.
Like when I saw 0 reviews on Goodreads and 2 reviews on Amazon it genuinely shocked me.

I spoke to the author at Comiccon in May and he was really kind and him talking about the book and what it was about is what convinced me to buy the book in the end and I don't regret it. He's a very kind guy and I hope the best for him in the future and that this book gets the attention it deserves.

There might be spoilers in the review from here:

The book itself gave off a Alice in Wonderland kind of vibe in the sense of mystery and adventure that it gave off and from the start I was intrigued by the forest itself and wanted to know more.

Throughout the book I really liked the relationship between Kai and Citizen and the characters work well together.

I really liked the queen of the forest but I would've liked more of her character I think she's really interesting and I just want to know more about her.

Lia was a good character but I think without her conversations with Candy she would've been a lot less developed.

I really like the interactions that we see in the forest from the Queen and her Subjects, to Citizen and the deer.

I think that whoever picks this up will enjoy reading it if they like Fantasy, Adventure books.
I also really liked the native american setting, I don't think I've read a book with Native American characters/settings before and I thought that was really interesting to read and somewhat learn about :)

I just finished reading this book at 1:20am and I have to say this was an amazing read. I don't even quite have the words to explain what a unique story this was (based on my history of consumption) and am saddened that it hasn't been read more. I met the creator at a convention once and they signed the book "thank you for coming back" and I feel like that, unknowingly, is so poignant after having finished the book.

The book cultivated complex feelings, I can't begin to explain. Definitely not an easy read or for the light-hearted. I have a soft spot for old folk, so this was challenging at times. I loved the imagery, the use of language, the universe.

It's a lot different from my typical indulgent read but it felt like a very wild break that kept me turning the page. I just wanted to know what happened next. It tugged on many heart-strings and I loved how clearly so much thought had gone into it.

At times was I confused? Probably, but I didn't mind. It was refreshing albeit heavy.

In regards to more specifics, I agree with other higher starred reviews listed. Of course there were some typos etc. but they didn't bother me personally and I think limiting a review by editorial mistakes is an unnecessary criticism of the self-publishing industry. The book was still brilliant.

I made a Goodreads account purely to review this book. Thank you Alexander Linton!

Loved it!

My personal opinion. It was not enjoyable and really took a long time to finish. It ended up becoming April’s book.

The spelling mistake and the choppy language made it very hard to read and I struggle to read as it is. But I have a horrible habit of never giving up.

The story ends on nothing. Nothing resolved. Nothing great open ended.

The whole story made no sense in my eyes, I couldn’t like the characters I couldn’t get to grips how long the main chunk of the story took. I was over all disappointed.

I got through it though. Yay me.

The story starts off a bit slow, but really picks up in the second half in ways you don't expect. Super interesting and unique worldbuilding and well-rounded characters - especially the main characters, Lia and Kai, who's developments I felt were handled really well and end in a satisfying way. There's some typos here and there, but for the most part they're pretty infrequent so it wasn't a huge bother for me personally.
Overall a pretty good book and I'm glad I stuck with it :) Would love to read more from Linton in the future!

Having the narrative be shared between several characters really helped create a fuller picture of the story. Beautifully descriptive. There was a definite Alice in Wonderland feel to it, but not sure if that was due to the choice of animal for Citizen and Candy (to reduce spoilers) as much as anything else.
Overall, I enjoyed the feel, world and overall narrative of the story, it was just too slow paced for me (personally) in the first half to get properly immersed in it.

A really interesting concept, and well executed story.

Bought a signed copy from the author who was outside the independent book shop in East Grinstead, can't resist buying from local authors and supporting others. Wasn't sure what to expect, but pleasantly surprised by the depth in this book. Would recommend, and will look forward to any future works from the author.

"We'll do anything to not be bored, right? I don't call that selfish, I call that living."

An engaging and at times stunning fantasy tale of family and community, of the shifting connections and motivations between friend and foe. Wonderfully innovative world building told through interlocking chapters and chapter headers, playing with time and place and point of view.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting, I enjoyed the relationship between Kai and Lia. The book was filled with beauty and a lot of sorrow. It was a good read other than the overuse of the word 'lamentations'.
