Years after Black Hammer and the rest of Spiral City’s greatest heroes seemingly died defeating the cosmic despot known as Anti-God, Lucy Weber, the daughter of Black Hammer, took up his mantle and carried on the legacy of her father.
Years after that, Lucy, and the world, have moved on. Living in the suburbs of Spiral City, Lucy is married and has children. But all is not blissful. Her marriage is falling apart, her job has reached a dead end, and for mysterious reasons, she hasn’t picked up the hammer in years. But, as her domestic life begins to crumble, the secrets of the last twenty years, and the reasons Lucy really gave up being Black Hammer, begin to resurface, threatening her family, and the peace she has tried hard to find for herself.

Jeff Lemire is a New York Times bestselling and award winning author, and creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder, Trillium, Plutona, Black Hammer, Descender, Royal City, and Gideon Falls. His upcoming projects include a host of series and original graphic novels, including the fantasy series Ascender with Dustin Nguyen.
I love the original Black Hammer story so much that I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this Reborn era. I should never doubt Jeff Lemire’s writing and ability to pick the artists for his stories, because I loved this one just as much! The cosmic and multiple dimension stuff, which I usually hate, still worked for me here. I’m very glad I got more Skulldigger, though I admittedly still am not satisfied with his story and I do want more. Crazy things have happened recently and I’m not sure how they will play out, but I’m looking forward to continuing on in this series!
I’m constantly impressed by how Jeff Lemire can pretty much single-handedly (along with his changing artists) create this constantly expanding superhero universe and make it this consistent. It should read like a derivative cornball mess but somehow it manages to feel original and read better than much of the superhero work that it pays homage to, and is still going strong as it chugs along.
In this lovely new library edition compiling the entire Reborn series, the story picks up 20 years after the events of the farm and the noble sacrifice of those heroes in Black Hammer: Age of Doom. Lucy Weber had taken over the Black Hammer mantle and became Spiral City’s only hero for sometime, until giving up her hammer and living the middle class life working in insurance. But things take a turn when another universal threat becomes imminent.
This is a riveting story that focuses on Lucy struggling with the fateful decisions of her past and what it means to be a hero again. It brings together a lot of the mythos introduced through the wide range of books so it’s a damn rewarding must-read for any Black Hammer fan.
The Black Hammer world is excellent. I’ve now read all three of the main story line books, and one of the ‘world of Black Hammer’ books (there are 5, that explore sub plots and characters, back stories, connected to the main story line). I just love the feel of this world that Lemire and Yarsky have created. It rests on certain super hero tropes, and yet mostly feels unique, layered, and interested. More please
This was pretty good and it continues the scope of the crisis events and is set 20 years later and kinda like Infinite crisis showing the great evil returning again but this time its another evil variant of the popular hero and I love it, Lemire really took the concept from these events in such a great manner and he is really building up to the end of this universe and I am so excited for it, I love the voice and feel and also the "Council of weirds" was a fun riff-off of Council of Reeds from marvel haha!
I like how it shows what happened in the past with Lucy and how it corelates to her present like meeting her husband, the thing with Skull-digger and what happened with Doc Andromeda that led her to not being the hero or retiring and what pulls her back to being the hero and I love the family element being added here, it does increase the tension but also amps up the emotions and all and like thats what you want as a writer and your readers can relate to that and I like how family-oriented Lucy is and her love for her family is everything.
The shots of Anti-God as he is resting in the center of the multi-verse is kinda scary lol but then again he is the end of everything and when the ending comes its so well built and yeah its "to be continued" but I like that each time the end happens, there is a big built up to the main event.. this event type stories can lose the human element but Lemire's writing is so terrific that he does these character driven stories so well and he is a master of it.. loved the way he explored every character.
It also sees the return to farm here and I like the twist here, can't wait to see how it continues but its like this circular storytelling where we arrived back to where we began and I love it, idk how many times I said it but yeah..
Also he tid-bit with Inspector Insector is so funny, its like such a silly cute idea, you can't help but laugh at that and thats just saying in a story this dark with the end of all existence at stake.. also Lemire's version of multiverse is kinda fun and a new interpretation but he connects it to the Para-zone and all the concepts he has established so well.. he really is bringing it full circle with this and I can't help but admire this brilliance!
