Boston Preternatural Investigations Unit #3

Green Rath: A Cait Reagan Novel

Rate this book
Two thousand years before Cait Reagan was a twinkle in The Morrigan’s eye, Weyna played handmaid to that very same Goddess in the year leading up to the Second Battle of Maighe Tuireadh, where the Tuatha de Dannan faced the forces of Fomori in a climactic final battle. But when Weyna stuns the assembled Gods and Goddesses by taking down the greatest fighter the Óșeni have ever known using a technique she never learned, she sets in motion a series of events that will ultimately lead to the discovery a long-buried secret two millennia later.

In the present, Cait's sister, Aoife Reagan, a former member of Ireland’s Tacaíochta Faoi Arm, the Garda version of SWAT, is drawn to Boston for the funeral, only to find that it’s not going to happen. Cait died, but it didn’t take as Cait returned to the ranks of the undead somewhat posthumously. Unfortunately, Cait's soul has decided to go on walkabout, and she remains in a strange sort of stasis.

In the meantime, Liz believes something larger is at work, and she has concocted an insane plan to draw out Cait’s killer and lead them one step closer to whoever is behind him. Aoife will impersonate Cait, leading the would-be assassin to believe they’ve failed. Now she just has to convince Aoife to be the bait, impersonate a nine-year veteran of the police department, and do it while chasing down a vicious creature of myth that is running loose in Boston and could destroy half the city.

EDITED to review the audio version of Green Wrath, narrated by Abbey Craden.

How can an author shoot a five-star book further into legendary status? Get the best to narrate. Green Wrath, with Abby Craden taking the wheel and bringing the Reagan sisters, Liz, Marcella, and Morgan to life, is a whole new dimension of Sapphic perfection. It’s not often I’m keen to listen to the audio of a book so soon after reading it, but this is one of those exceptions. Make sure you check it out.

Warning: If you haven’t read Blood Rituals (or listened to it – Abby Craden;) or Black Mirror, skip this review until you have. It will contain some spoilers.

Green Wrath introduces Aoife, Cait’s sister, and I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this. I certainly wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Cait. She and Liz had finally gotten their act together, and they were building a sweet home life. Then, boom. These cliffhangers can really mess with a person’s head. Aoibh Wood knows what she is doing, though, and her work is masterful.

Liz, Marcella, and Morgan convince Aoife to impersonate Cait, who they believe will return to them. The underworld is still in turmoil, and the team fights to keep the city safe while hunting down the man responsible for trying to end Cait’s life.

Green Wrath cuts between two time frames. Modern day; Aoife, and two thousand years in the past; Weyna. Weyna is the Morrigan’s daughter, so clearly, there is a connection between her and Cait. Her path seemed to be decided for her until she stood up for herself, changing her course of life dramatically.

Aoife slots nicely into Cait’s world, and even though they have had completely different upbringings, there is no denying they are sisters. Emotionally, it is a struggle for Aoife, who has always felt like her life came second to Cait’s, but with Morgan sticking close by, she begins to see her worth.

Wood brings an originality to the world of storytelling that is truly refreshing. Her characters are relevant even as they are creatures of myth. They have their baggage and desires, their need to succeed and be a part of something bigger than themselves, and it’s impossible not to become invested in their journey. The narrative unfolds in a way that keeps the reader guessing and glued to the pages.

At its core, this entire series is an epic in every sense. Wood has created a world that is immersive, intricate, and utterly captivating. It’s a journey you won't want to end, and thankfully, it hasn’t just yet!

It’s a personal bias that I didn’t want the limelight shifted on Cait’s sister but oh well. I guess she needed her story told too. But my loyalty was with Cait the whole time. I still really enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed the historical POV. I just couldn’t stop devouring it. Just one more chapter…until it’s bloody 4:30am.

An Exhilarating Journey

Cait lays as dead in a catatonic state with her soul traveling through past lives merging and also growing into a well disciplined fighter and powerful leader while her sister, Aoife, takes her place in the present to flush out Cait's killer. Aoife comes into her own power and falls in love, having been perfectly matched by Marsella, the matchmaker and they settle their personal conflict.

Meanwhile in Cait's soul walk dream, prophecies play out as worlds, times, and peoples forge connections between past and present tumultuously whirling toward each era's cataclysmic Armageddon while marching toward the future where light and dark will ultimately clash once again with a hope to finally vanquish Mother Darkness and her forces.

This is an exhilarating journey with colorful, well developed characters populating both worlds as the author draws us through an intriguing and powerful history and backstory taking place in one timeline of the past where Cait's soul is traveling and simultaneously, we embark on a second adventure in the present timeline where Aoife comes into her own.

You quickly become invested in the stories of both worlds, stories that are part of the whole singular story and its outcome. We hear various POV's and become immersed in the battles, explorations, and investigations. And there are surprises and winsome dates along the way as well as angst and tension, and even sexy times.

Aoibh Wood engages the reader and draws us along to a phenomenal conclusion, which as usual points the way toward the next suspenseful journey in the upcoming book while Abby Craden's narration makes Green Rath come alive, so you feel like you're right there with the characters in the middle of all the happenings.

I'm grateful for the Audible ARC and happy to leave a review. I'm immensely enjoying the Cait Reagan Series and highly recommend reading or listening to them for yourself.

Oh my, where to start. The third Cait Reagan book is incredible and has a lot going on. However, with everything that goes on, the story flowed incredibly well for me. I absolutely loved the writing and thought there was great balance throughout. The description and intricacies of the storytelling are perfect and at times verge on poetic as the world and character experiences the reader is immersed in come to life.

Aoife comes home to Boston to mourn her sister but learns the plan is for her to cover for Cait’s absence after she was attacked. With this plan comes her need to deal with feelings about her sister that she buried after being whisked away to Ireland as a teen. Learning about Cait’s life in order to pass as Cait comes with challenges and revelations, but the support of Cait’s found family and Cait’s PIU team help her settle in. Like Cait, Aoife also becomes more than who and she was. While on this journey to find Cait’s killer, save Boston from a sea monster, and the world from the bigger darkness that lurks, Aoife finds more than she ever thought possible.

Weyna/Skaja’s story takes us back in time to the last time the Black gate was opened. She struggles to live up to her powerful Goddess mother until she takes a different path. She discovers a fight and fierceness she didn’t realize she had and, joining the warrior ranks, becomes a leader her people need to fight the army that seeks to overrun them into darkness. Her story covers love, loss, family, and duty. Her character development, as well as those of her supporting characters, is well written, balanced, and provides a history and insight into who and what the Reagans and team will face. I can’t wait to see what more comes from her knowledge and experiences in helping Cait and company fight the forces of Mother Darkness (and perhaps humanity as well).

If I thought that things couldn't get some complicated and interesting... well, we have book three, Green Rath.

It can be strange, reading the next book in a series, and finding that most of it is from a different characters pov. Given the events at the end of Black Mirror, and that Cait is currently in a coma, it's to be expected, and while I was a little uncertain, I have to say that the story was really well done. Aoife is a very interesting character (and her relationship with Morgan is cute), and she ends up being thrown into so much. She is very much her own person, fitting nicely into the world and all that is going on.

Weyna's sections are also very very interesting. There's a lot of background here, and you quickly get glimpses of other aspects as well, and it helps bring certain parts of the story together, even if it a sub story of its own. It certainly will have an impact on the series moving forward as well.

Like all of the previous books, I really really enjoyed it, sucked into the story and fully engrossed. It really is a great series, and Green Rath adds a lot to it, while adding just as many mysteries and twists of its own. Fair warning that it again finishes with a cliffhanger, and this time I'm going to have to wait till next year for Sisters of Darkness to be released so that I can see what happens next. Looking forward to it.

Wow Fabulous Novel !

I don’t usually leave reviews But wow oh wow ! This book & the others in the series before it are so worth while reading ! There’s so much going on but it’s done in such a way that you don’t pay attention to it going between past & present then you get to the point where there’s an aha moment of complete realisation that’s so worth reading & waiting to get to !
This Author Has a mind blowing creative mind ! Her books are so so worth reading you will fall in love with all the characters ! I’ve lost many nights of sleep reading this book it’s been so so worth it !

Amazing, Fabulous, Fantastic, Read ! Well worth the money actually the author should be charging £12-£15 for This book ! I’d happily pay £50 for each book !

You really need to read this series ! You’ll be missing out which would be a shame especially if you want to escape for hours at a time from life. ! The Authors words pull you into a different world where you see & smell the sounds all around you as described.
I wish I hadn’t needed sleep just so I could stay in that magical world for a lot longer !

Aoibh Wood is a Genius Author !

Great addition to the series.

I definitely had no idea that this wasn’t the end book of the series. I got stressed at the end because nothing was solved and I was afraid of a rushed ending, which would be awful in a 3 book (so far) series.

Other than that I enjoyed book 2 much more, but this book was great. Lots more characters, and multiple POVs. It gave me a little bit of whiplash but I got used to it.

Spoilers below:
I’m still so bummed that we never got a love scene with cait and Liz. Cait has literally slept with everyone, but not her girlfriend/love of her life/perfect woman. I rooted for Liz and cait from the end of book one and still nothing. I’m afraid that ship has sailed but what a disappointment for me.

I really like these books. The world building and beautifully diverse characters are awesome. I just hope the 4th book doesn't also continue on with the whole sexual assault theme. Its overused and has no significant relevance to the furthering character development. The main characters and their significant traumas has already been established in the first book. To be honest i feel a bit bludgeoned by the continued references and mentions of a horribly traumatic event and has nothing to do with the current plot or any of the romantic side plots through three books.

Aoife has rushed to Boston because she's been told her sister Cait is dead... which turns out not to be true. She's reverted to her vampire state, and is in a coma. Now Cait's colleagues are asking her to pose as her, to hopefully draw the killer out.

At the same time Cait finds herself living a past life, with connections to events now.

Good solid read. I liked Aoife, and she interacting with the existing cast was interesting. There WERE a fair bit of minor editing issues, which annoy me.

Finally finally 🙌 I was counting down the days to get stuck into this and it didn’t disappoint. I love everything about the crazy worlds created. There was something going on with ever chapter, very gripping. I did miss Liz abit in this one but it was good to learn more about Morgan, who I couldn’t bare in the last book. I also learned I now have a thing for grey skinned, silver haired, muscle bound ladies 🥰

3.5*

The writing is great. The characters are great.

I enjoyed the story, there wasn’t enough Marcella or Nastasia for my liking. Their characters are probably the most complex and interesting of all.

The storyline with Doyle seemed to get lost a little? Which was a shame. There was an awful lot going on, I had to backtrack every now and again.

I’m intrigued by the ending, and the next book in the series.
