Clarissa Smith grew up along the Quebec/Labrador coast in the 1950's and 1960's. Broken Wings is her true story of life in the harsh and unforgiving land with its own wild beauty. Its a story about love, hate and abandonment, but overall its about the fragility of life. Broken Wings is Clarissa's telling of a promise to her dying mother that she couldn't keep. Her story is one that you will never forget. Its both shocking and heartbreaking in its naked honesty.
Although I read this book over five years ago, it has remained the most memorable and most heart-wrenching memoir I have ever read. I remember reading all night, as I could not put it down once I started. For a memoir, it was unusually suspenseful. Especially compelling were the life or death challenges the author faced as a child during the 50's and 60's along the harsh Quebec-Labrador coast. Carissa Smith's forthright story includes abandonment, neglect, death, births, domestic violence, near-death experience, extreme poverty, hunger, despair, sacrifice, and the impossible promise she was determined to fulfill.
