Let’s first take a second to appreciate this beautiful cover. I love how these colors are blended together, it looks so pretty on my shelf! Also, as a huge lover of maps in books I appreciate that there is one included. It really helps bring the story to life. I’m not familiar with that many steampunk books even though the concept and genre intrigue me. So when I read the synopsis for this one I knew I had to read it ASAP. I would have loved having this book when I was a teenager. The characters felt so fresh and relatable, especially Callie. She is definitely someone you can connect with and my heart goes out to her. While she was my favorite I did enjoy all of the characters and the growth they showed as the story continued. I can’t wait to see where the author takes them in the next book. Since I haven’t read steampunk in so long I was worried it would take me a while to get into the world but the author’s descriptions made it easy. I had no problem picturing and recreating the story in my head. If you’re not sure about steampunk and want to give it a try, then I definitely recommend you start with this one. It’s perfect for both teenagers as well as adults due to the wide range of themes it includes. Honestly, this book would make a great movie and I hope that it does one day. I'd love to see this story come to life on the big screen. Overall, this was a fantastic debut that I think everyone should try. It was well written, the pacing was on point, and is a book that you will want to finish the same day you start. The reader can tell the author is passionate about science. Even though I'm not crazy about science , his writing made me want to know more. I can't wait to see what the patrons in my library think. I'll be adding the book to the collection today!

⇢My thoughts
I really enjoyed this novel! First of all, I was ecstatic when I realized that this was a book within the steampunk fantasy genre, because the steampunk subgenre is something that I really enjoy, but don’t see nearly enough of. MORE STEAMPUNK PLEASE! (Also, go read this novel if it’s a genre that you’d like to explore!)
As for the characters, CALLIE!!! I loved her personality, and definitely found her the most relatable. I wish we got more of her perspective!
Next, the world building. Remember how I said I love steampunk fantasy? I also write for fun, and I was once considering writing something in this genre, but ultimately shelved that project because of the complexity of the world building. Creating a steampunk world is no easy feat! But the author accomplished it so well in this book. The world was complex but understandable, and it didn’t take me too long to be able to learn all of the terms and places in the book. (And the map definitely helped haha.)
Overall, I think that this book was as unique as it was because of the author’s unique lens in areas like science, spirituality, etc. Go check out the author’s full bio, but I definitely think his prior knowledge made this book seem more… authentic?

My first ever steampunk novel! Thank you so much to Derek Paul and Book Influencers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
A Machine Divine follows our two main characters, Asher and Callie, as they leave their hometown and head to the big city to pursue their respective fields of study at a prestigious university. At the same time, political unrest and chemical terrorist attacks force Asher and Callie to come together to develop a solution and try to put an end to the attacks.
The worldbuilding in this book was great - the author did an excellent job with the steampunk elements and I could vividly picture all of the cities, buildings, and outfits worn by the characters. There was even a sport played throughout the book which fit really well into the steampunk atmosphere - players wore metal suits with tube-like cylinders attached to their backs that players on the opposing teams had to try and unhook with long batons while navigating an obstacle course-style playing field. This sort of attention to detail really made the universe and the steampunk aspect feel quite cohesive, which I appreciated.
The book was told mostly from Asher's perspective which really allowed us to get to know his personality and motives. I do wish we got a bit more of that with Callie - she usually just seemed fairly unenthusiastic overall throughout most of the book and I would have loved more insight into her personality.
Overall, the initial chapters of the book were a little bit slow while we were introduced to the characters and the world (which can be quite common for any first book in a fantasy series), but once things started to pick up, the pacing improved greatly. Once the action really begins in the second half of the book, I couldn't put it down! This book made me think, it made me continually change my mind about who was a "bad guy" and who was not, and it also made me cry at some points, which is rare for a book.
I'm looking forward to seeing where Derek takes this world and our characters in the next book!
Things I loved about this book:
- Our MMC has heterochromia which is a trait I've always thought was incredibly fascinating
- Our FMC has a snow fox companion which gave me 'animal familiar' vibes (one of my absolute favourite tropes!)
- The steampunk vibe was super unique and something I've never experienced in a book before
- Vivid descriptions of buildings and attire
- Stunning cover artwork
Things I didn't love about this book:
- Upon arriving at university, our MMC immediately develops an infatuation with one of the women he meets in his new friend group based on nothing other than the fact that she's absolutely beautiful (and we very quickly find out she has literally been genetically altered to be attractive). It felt shallow, and for me, it was a bit of a strike against his character in terms of personality and depth.

- You enjoyed books like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games
- You love STEM
- You are an ACOWAR girly vs an ACOMAF girly (ie. love your books to have political conflict and turmoil)

I just finished A Machine Divine bij Derek Paul earlier and I have to say I don't give out 5 stars easily. To me, rating a book with 5 stars means I view it as a classic. A book that hits in all the right spots to leave a lasting impression and that I will cherish for a long time and recommend to others. A Machine Divine did that for me and I didn't expect this. It's an independently published novel, te first in a series I'm sure, and it's good. It is so good.
I will be honest that the first 30 pages got me wondering where it was going. The world in this book h as a steam punk setting and with it being pretty dialogue driven in the beginning, I was having a hard time picturing the world and characters in my mind. But that soon changed, as the world, the cities, the characters and the general life were shaping up. I started to feel for Callie, Nico and Asher, even Cloud, Callie's snow fox. Slowly but surely as a reader you are taken into their lives and this was so well done.
I loved it all, from the big game, the work at the university, to the indepth information and phylosophy that comes up. I loved the idea of the enhancement of a person, the steam punk details like little mechanical critters, up to the point where the action is building up leaving the biggest part of the second half to become an action packed rollercoaster ride.
The final 100 pages I couldn't put the book down. I had to read it, I didn't want to finish the story, but it just had me and pulled me with it. There were some minor details that had me in awe, wishing it were different, but I see where it had to be done for the plot. And in my eyes Asher isn't really the main character. Callie and Nico were too. The dynamics are incredible and for a debut I'm really impressed by this all. I just know there has to be a sequel and maybe even a whole series and I'll devour those books like this one. Probably much faster even. 5 full stars and one of the best reads of 2023 so far.

Never knew I needed a steampunk book before reading this.
A Machine Divine is a debut fantasy(I’d say more of a sci-fi) young adult book that follows Asher & Callie, two gifted teens from the countryside as they travel to a high status university in the capital. There they get entangled in malicious plots and secret societies.
I did take one star off because there was one death in this book that upset me, tw for animal death. There’s also a lot of drugs, some violence, poisoning & other death. I also wish we’d gotten more of Callie’s POV. It felt like we were in Asher’s more and I found her more intriguing. Another female character I really loved was Autumn! I loved the twists in this book and didn’t see them coming.
This book really reminded me of Arcane with the inventions, the steampunk, strange serums, etc! I really liked the sci-fi aspects and medical aspects and was surprised that I understood a lot of what was going on.
I am really excited for book two, the world building, characters and plot have so much potential for a series

It took me a while to come up with this review, but I’m going to go for 4 stars on this one. Let me start out by saying that for a self-published indie author, this book was written extremely well and the writer has obviously put a lot of work and thought into this book!
Now, onto the story itself: if you like Harry Potter, you’ll like this. There’s actually quite some similarities & I think the vibes are somewhat similar. Wether that is intentional or not, I don’t know, but this was a feeling I had throughout the whole book. And by the way, if steampunk scares you - don’t let it !!! I was a bit worried myself since I’m not huge on sci-fi and this kinda walks that line bordering sci-fi, but the way the writer wrote out the story works with this setting, and it is not overly steampunk. It’s an easy way to slide into the genre.
The one comment I have on the book though is the ending, which felt a bit rushed to me. Don’t get me wrong - the way the anticipation is worked up throughout the novel is really good! But I feel like at the ending we have two major characters that now share this bond because of what they went through in the end, however I feel like as a reader you don’t get quite enough time to let that bond develop and really sink in.
That is not stopping me from reading book 2 though! Which I cannot wait for! I recommend reading this if you’re looking for a nice, fun, easy & exciting read :)

I was allowed by @thebreakingpattern and @bookinfluencerscom . Review this book. And look how stunning this book is. The cover immediately appealed to me. I also found the story new and refreshing, I was not familiar with such a concept.
This book is a Ya Steampunk book, I had never read anything like it. The Ya steampunk theme is also related to loneliness, acceptance, and true friendship… I therefore definitely recommend this book if you are aged 12-22 and you like steam punk.
In the story, we follow Asher and Callie, who go from a small town of Vana to a university in the big city of Riali City. Asher studies bio & genetics here and Callie has a gift, with animals. When they arrive at university, they encounter new friends, uni life, dark secrets circulating in society.
This story started very slow for me, in the beginning I also thought it had cozy vibes. And even a little Harry potter vibes, this made it a bit more interesting for me despite the slow start of the story. I really liked the characters, and as you progress through the story you get to know them better and better. I would have liked to see more from Callie's pov, it was mainly about Asher. The story was very well written, Derek (the author of the book) studied biology himself. And because aspects of this profession come back in the book, you really see that he studied it. The further I got into the book, the more interesting and fun I found the book. I thought it was a bit rushed at the end, but what a plot twist. This made sc rushed pieces! Can't wait to read Derek's next book.

I never read a book by him before so i wasnt sure what to expect even tho this book feature 2 of my favorite Genres, YA and Fantasy as well as a new Genre i never read before, Steampunk but i have to say i really enjoyed this one from the beautiful cover design to the writing style, storytelling and imagination he brought into this book it was absolutely wonderful to read.
The Characters were so fun and interesting to read about. I couldnt pick just 1 as my favorite since i seemed to enjoy all the characters.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was in a FairyTale land while reading, especially when the scenery was described.
I do wish this book was part of a series cause i'd love to see where Derek would take the story next and what the characters would be up to next.

A YA Steampunk novel that takes place at the capitols university where there is an elite secret society and a chemical terrorist who is using advanced technology to kill those in power?? SIGN ME UP.
Callie and Asher leave their small town to attend university at the capitol where life not only moves faster, but the people around them are 180 of those they grew up with. You are immediately caught in the intrigue of the university and the students' adjustments to their new life. Asher tries to fit in by doing anything that his peers need from him. While Callie takes her time to adjust to her new world and would rather hang out in the animal sanctuary than go out to parties.
My favorite parts of this book were the in-depth science details that help us understand how the terrorist is able to cause the devastation that we are seeing in the book. There is also a good amount of political intrigue that helps move the plot along. Before this book, I had never read a steampunk novel so it was interesting to see the details that differentiated it from a typical sci-fi or fantasy book.
Getting into the groove of the book is a bit hard as you adjust to the characters and get the backstory of why it is such a big deal they are both going to the capitols university. I also found that some of the detail felt a bit overkill and it would be tempting to skim through them. However, I do not know if it would have been more confusing to not have it than to keep it in the book.
Overall, this is a great book to start out with if you are interested in steampunk! The writing was good and even though the book took a bit to get into you eventually do get caught up and move right along.

Overall, this is a great book to start out with if you are interested in steampunk! The writing was good and even though the book took a bit to get into you eventually do get caught up and move right along.

Fantasy isn’t my go to genre but this was such a fun read! Very descriptive…you can picture yourself in the book and visualize what’s going on. I love when a book does that. If you’re favorite genre is fantasy or even if you just want to dip your toes in, I suggest giving this one a go. Immersive and fun. Fast paced page turner. Happy reading!

Asher Auden is a biology prodigy who has the opportunity of a lifetime when he is accepted into a prestigious university together with Callie, a girl from his hometown.
Together Asher and Callie go to the university but they have two different journeys, Asher becomes friends with everyone and the most important students from the university, and Callie embraces her independence and chooses to be alone with her pet.
Asher is a genius a good friend and he is loyal. His only mistake is that he can't say no to his friends and because of that he has problems and he doesn't know how to resolve them. Callie is relatable and you can ask for her help and she will help you. She is a great girl.
The world-building was amazing and easy to follow. You can feel the danger and the tension between people from the university and how the great leaders of the world are afraid for their lives. I liked the world created by the author. The ending was mindblowing and full of twists.
I loved this new debut and I can not wait to read the next book in the series. I recommend this book to every fantasy lover.

“A Machine Divine” is a YA Steampunk Fantasy where biological engineering and robotic mechanical devices are regular everyday occurrences. Asher is a 17-year-old biology genius. Callie, meanwhile, has an affinity for trapping and caring for animals. When both are accepted to the prestigious Langford University in Riali, it is considered a prolific honor. From the agriculturally oriented Vana, it is rare for someone from their city to be given such an opportunity. When a chemical terrorist starts attacking school events and killing people, however, they will have to decide whether to hang back in the shadows and play it safe, or risk being targeted as outsiders and potential suspects themselves to save Riali.
“A Machine Divine” is a powerhouse. The urgency that underlines the pacing of the book, coupled with detailed descriptions of this steampunk-era nation and its different creatures, machines and cultures adds up to a complete narrative bursting at the seams to be told. I enjoyed the stark differences between Asher, Nico and Callie. Though all come from drastically different backgrounds, they work together trying to save the greater good. All three have different skill sets, prejudices, fears and motivations for their actions. While Nico's motives are ultimately set within promoting the desires of a top-secret society he was born into, it was still evident that he had his own thoughts and morals which made me sympathize with him and hope that in the end, he makes the right choices. Even some of the smaller side characters such as Roman, Autumn, Avee, Kiara and the various professors are each given starkly diverse identities, personalities and desires. This made for a cast that was easily brought to life in the mind as I read through the book.
As I continued to read further along in "A Machine Divine" it was harder and harder to put down, because I was so desperate to know what happened next. Readers will experience a myriad of emotions while reading Derek Paul’s book. They will feel the trepidation of being released into a foreign world starkly different from where one was raised. They will feel happiness as Asher and Callie find different niches within the university; anxiety at wondering whether Asher is perhaps digging himself a hole by supplying his new, wealthy peers with psychedelic substances to help gain acceptance the group; and, at times, profound sadness.
“A Machine Divine” starts off brimming with the opportunity for Asher and Callie to step out into the wider world and work to make their dreams realities. In the end, however, schoolwork and peer pressure pale in comparison to realizing that there are those in the world who will never accept you simply because you come from somewhere different, and that perhaps it is more important to stay true to yourself rather than compromise your beliefs to appease the wrong people. Too often, the ones we try so hard to please end up hanging us out to dry when lines become drawn and, for Asher and Callie, war creeps across the threshold.
I recommend “A Machine Divine” to any reader who enjoys YA fantasy and science fiction, and fantasy/science fiction in general. Can’t wait to read the next installment in what is sure to be a hit series!

Author Derek Paul brings his experience as a student of both molecular/cellular biology and creative writing to A Machine Divine, his debut novel. The protagonist Asher is a relatable teenager from a small town who is enamored with big city life. He’s quickly scooped up by a group of high class friends, who capitalize on his biology skills, though he still remains friendly with the only other member of the school from home, Callie. I enjoyed how vastly different Asher and Callie are, he a brainy awkward guy and she an introverted animal lover. As a YA novel, A Machine Divine definitely knows its audience and readers in the late teens/early 20’s will instantly relate to the characters and situations. Plus, Paul has all of his characters really going through it as they experience the hard truths of growing up. Themes of loss, acceptance, and growing up are very present and relatable to readers of any age.
A Machine Divine has an overarching narrative to tell, but sometimes the threads being teased along the way felt deceiving. Maybe this was me trying too much to read into what I thought were subtle hints of what’s to come, but after finishing the book, I think this is just Paul’s style of writing. I might have enjoyed the book a tad more if some of these threads had epic payoffs but this was purely me putting my own expectations on the book. Maybe if there’s a second book in the series some of the smaller storylines will be addressed.
For being the author’s first foray into a longform novel, I applaud Derek Paul for what he’s done with A Machine Divine. He has established an intricate and interesting new world populated with characters who are facing serious issues of war, spirituality, and prejudice. A Machine Divine is the perfect book for someone looking to dive into a steampunk-style fantasy world. I give it 333/5 - recommend!

A Machine Divine, by Derek Paul, is a new steampunk YA novel. When the story opens, teenage Asher and Callie, from the small town of Vana, have both been accepted in university in Riali City. Asher will study bio and genetics, with the unique abilities of genes in this world. Callie has gifts with animals, and animals here include sprites, snow foxes, and more. When they arrive in the capital, though, they will discover city customs, uni life, new friends… and dark secrets in their society.
So, you all know I love a good school story, and the elements of this fantastical steampunk world made it feel like Hogwarts or Professor Xavier’s School for the Gifted. This novel has a slightly slow start, with many, many scenes of Asher exploring his new school, meeting new friends, and adjusting to uni life. Normally too much exposition bogs down the story, but in this case, I enjoyed discovering the rules of the steampunk world, of the uni life, of the fantastical science behind Asher, Callie, Asher’s new roomie Nico, and their classmates’ projects. There’s a lively mix of familiar school locations, like labs, dorms, or cafeterias, and relatable teen moments, plus wild fantasy science. Without spoilers, there’s a little sneaky botanical gene splicing for some berries with, uh, recreational properties.
This wonderful steampunk setting in A Machine Divine, though, includes dystopian aspects and darker secrets. Without spoilers, social class and access to resources, wild genetics, steampunk science, and the unique personalities of our characters all come together to make an intriguing and surprising plot. A lot of the information that felt like world-building comes back as Asher discovers secret connections in his new world. Many things that Nico, and the other kids from wealthy capital families take for granted is new to Asher, with his rural background.
I really enjoyed how the characters’ personalities and skills came together in A Machine Divine. Without spoilers, I can at least say that there’s satisfying emotional growth with characters’ growing knowledge and understanding. It’s not exactly a coming-of-age novel, but we do get to see young characters discovering who they are and how they want to live. I can’t say I have read much steampunk fantasy before but I was intrigued by the premise of this book and knew I wanted to make it one of my October reads and I’m glad I did! The characters Asher and Callie were super interesting to me and felt well fleshed out throughout the book, especially Asher whose POV it’s from I do wish we got to see more of Callie and got a section through her POV. I enjoyed the pacing of this book, especially after the world-building in the first few chapters with an action-packed storyline exploring who is behind the chemical terrorist attacks which has expected consequences. The author wanted to explore whether the value of acceptance is worth the cost which is such an interesting theme for YA as lots of the audience are trying to work out how to fit in.
To sum up I’m giving A Machine Divine, 4* and I’m looking forward to seeing where Paul goes next after this incredible debut.

This book began as a fantasy woodland tale then later morphed into a world of metal and steel. Complaints? None.
Not gonna lie, I had my doubts in the beginning. Hell I almost DNF-ed the book at a time. But the story was too damn interesting to not pursue. (And pursue I did the way fangirls do Robert Downey Jr.)
Callie was my favourite character. She's taken 'action speaks louder than words' a tad too seriously. Because friends, Callie only speaks to deliver either a) quote with a deep, meaningful message behind it. Or b) to let the bad guys know that she's gonna whoop their butts.
There were many mystical creatures involved so there's that. And there were also cities based on machinery. I've never read steampunk before so the genre is lost on me. But hey, hello machines.
Asher, I believe was the hero of the story. He's kind of like, what I fear I'll be as a biologist. He's extremely smart, and actually concotes all these bio-stuff and while he does it with good intention, it's science. It's gonna be misused anyhow. There was an unusual amount of chemistry talk to the point where I was forced to look up Derek Paul. I was right, man's in research. (I see you Derek)
There were twists, secret societies, genetically improved humans, a university, a cool fictional game, fantasy creatures, c0caine-adjacent berries, hate crimes against a community and like 350 pages. Which I enjoyed nonetheless.
Man I really liked Nico. Idk hopefully he gets a deserved smack in the head in the next books. My favourite character is Liam. Thank you very much.
Hate Roman with a passion. The jury is out on the Autumn character. But hey I enjoyed all the long talks on spirituality, immortality and religion specifically between Prof. Redding and Asher

A quirky coming of age story set in a lively steampunk fantasy world.
I liked this one, but it’s a little rough around the edges, even for a first novel.
The blurb is slightly misleading: it technically does follow both Asher and Callie but it’s mostly told from Asher’s POV. While the writing is light and easy to read, the plot is a bit slow; it wasn’t until 50% of the way through the book that I really felt hooked.
Honestly, the pacing overall was somewhat uneven. The first half is filled with brief moments of excitement followed by longer segments where not a lot happens, interspersed with periodic chunks of info-dumping. In the second half, a lot happens all at once, leaving the ending feeling kind of rushed. Fair warning: a lot of plot threads were left hanging so this is clearly the start of a series. The world-building is interesting though; I'm hoping we see more of it in the sequel.
One thing I found really refreshing was the lack of a romantic subplot. It was nice to read something free from the forced entanglements that most other YA novels seem to fall prey to. I also enjoyed the author's descriptions of the various people and settings. The details were vivid and easy to picture.
My one other complaint is that the book could stand another round of copy edits. Most of the issues were minor but still distracting enough to disrupt the flow of the narrative for me.

Don’t get too comfortable with the happy steampunk uni vibes, stuff goes DOWN. The story ends in a wildly different place it starts.
And it got me. I was so set on the bad guy being this one particular character, and then it wasn’t! And who the bad guy is makes so much sense! But that part of the story can’t be over. No body, no death.
I haven’t read a lot of steampunk type books and I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would initially. I needed to know what happened next.
I did not trust anyone in this book. Everyone was sus. And those who weren’t as sus ended up looking out just for their own in the end. The secret society reflected the corrupt elite of their and our world so well. They thought just because they had the power, they could defy literally the laws of nature.
Asher’s science talk completely went over my head. But kid’s smart and if he can fix this one thing with Cloud I’ll forgive him.
Callie was my fave of the main characters. “Callie had no interest in sports” - me. For the first part she didn’t really do much, but she became really involved in the second half and I’m so intrigued as to where her story will go next. Asher has an obvious path forward in how he can be helpful in the war, but Callie not so much. It will be interesting to see if they continue along their paths of Asher getting involved closely with things and trying to make a lot of friends and Callie keeping herself seperate from everyone else.
Samira was only in the story for a hot minute, but I’m very intrigued by her and where she comes from, so it will be interesting to see where the story goes from here.

And it got me. I was so set on the bad guy being this one particular character, and then it wasn’t! And who the bad guy is makes so much sense! But that part of the story can’t be over. No body, no death.
I haven’t read a lot of steampunk type books and I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would initially. I needed to know what happened next.
I did not trust anyone in this book. Everyone was sus. And those who weren’t as sus ended up looking out just for their own in the end. The secret society reflected the corrupt elite of their and our world so well. They thought just because they had the power, they could defy literally the laws of nature.

Callie and Asher are given a rare opportunity when they are accepted to attend university in the nation's capital Riali. Asher is a brilliant biology scientist in the making and found the move from the small town of Vana as an eye-opener. He’s introduced and makes friends with some of the higher-ranking students with influential parents. Callie has a talent and gift for animals and is finding it hard to fit into a place where everyone is made from the same mold it seems. The two are on two different paths until a masked psychopath terrorist begins launching attacks on the capital. Asher is bent on trying to find a cure to the poison that the terrorist is unleashing on the city and enlists Callie as he feels she’s one of very few in the capital that he can trust.
Okay, so I thought this book was amazing! It was a great kickoff to my new year of reading. The characters were so interesting, but I found that I could relate to Callie so much more than Asher. Derek Paul has created this wonderful that is in jeopardy and you can’t help but be on the edge of your seat as you turn the page. I cannot wait to read the sequel to this book! Hop on amazon and get this book! You will not be disappointed!

This was certainly a fun read! I am no stranger to steampunk fiction (I have written one myself, after all!) BUT, I found this one to be unique and much darker than mine. I enjoy a bit of pizzaz now and again.
To be quite frank, I did have to get in the headspace of my science fiction-loving brother-in-law, but I enjoyed this book.
I’m very particular about how the narrator and characters speak in books, and I am quite pleased that this one had great pacing and verbiage for all the characters.
If you’re not familiar with the plot or the meaning of the book, the author describes it as follows: “A Machine Divine is a young adult, steampunk fantasy that explores whether the value of acceptance is worth its cost.”
Overall, this was a fantastic read (and it helps that the book looks pretty on the shelf too!) and it is a great example of a well-thought-out Young Adult Fiction book.

WOW. What a great contribution to the sci-fantasy genre. If you love science / academia, political intrigue, secret societies, and steampunk vibes, this book is for you. This book reminded me of Howl's Moving Castle in the best way - the juxtaposition of organic vs. industrial, human and machine. Vana is a place I want to be!
The ethical and existential questions this novel poses are so important - it really made me think and question as I was reading. Asher and Callie are a great duo as two sides of the same coin. The B-characters, especially Arthur and Dr. Jones, are super intriguing and I can't help but feel there is more to them to come in future novels. There are some great and unexpected character twists as well that I genuinely did not see coming.
Also - can we talk about the art and map?! They are awesome.
Highly recommend this novel - I could not put it down and I can't WAIT for the next book!

i loved this so much more than i thought i would!!
its literally the first steampunk ya fantasy i’ve read after the lunar chronicles and i was a bit skeptical but i’m so glad i did read it!
what i loved
- the characters <33 i loved the characters so much, especially the whole found family vibe the book gave! Callie was my favourite & i really wish we could have seen more of her POV (as majority was Asher’s)
- the plot & pace ! i loved how from the start of the book everything got straight to the point (i usually hate tons of descriptions & backstory) & this book was very quick paced but not too rushed to not understand what’s going on, so i’m glad i could keep up with it!
- the world building ! i found the world and place so freaking cool and i love that there was a map, the descriptions were not too heavy but just the right amount & depth
the reason i’m not rating this 5 stars is because of certain plot twists & deaths (which i think is preference) & because i needed more Callie 🥲

Book Review-
This read starts off relatively slow with introducing you to the world, and it takes a while to get used to it. But once you get the hang of the world and the changing character perspectives, you really start enjoying it. You start recognizing whose perspective this read is from and you delve into their character. All of them are smart and its really interesting to see their takes. Overall, I really enjoyed this read.
This book is something you will enjoy if you like politics and science fiction, a genre I don't admittedly read a lot of, but one I liked seeing here! While I could spot a few things here and there that put me off, there were a dozen others that drew me back to the book and kept me reading. I would recommend A Machine Divine to you.

I was really excited to jump into a sub genre I don't usually read, Steampunk. And A Machine Divine did not disappoint.
We follow Asher, a biology student, and Callie (and her companion Cloud) a talented animal trapper. They are both given the opportunity to leave their small, isolated hometown and attend university in the steampunk, industrial city.
I really enjoyed this book. The pacing was great and I read it quite fast. I felt from the start the character introduction was great and the worldbuilding was vivid and contained just the right amount of description. My only gripe was the lack of Callie point of views, but I still really enjoyed Asher and his character development.
This is a great introduction for me to the steampunk subgenre and look forward to future work this author releases. It was an enjoyable and quick read!

This was such a fun book! It was easy to read, and I had no trouble picturing what everything looked like. I thought the world was very interesting and I would love to see it on screen.
A Machine Divine touches many themes, such as acceptance, friendship, popularity, loneliness, science and spirituality, and the corrupt culture of societal elite, which made it even more interesting to read.
I liked Asher, but my favorite character was 100% Callie. It would've been great if there had been more chapters from her pov, but maybe in the next book.
I recommend A Machine Divine, especially to those who like YA steampunk fantasy✨

This is my very first Steampunk fantasy!! (Or Steampunk anything basically! ) and now I'm hooked! The way he has written both science and fantasy into this story is just..... 😍😍😍😍😍

I loved the characters! I looooooooooved the way he introduced them! This had so many twists! I didn't see most of them coming! But this one was a page turner and I only put it down once (albeit unwillingly) for family stuff.
The author has put all his heart and soul into this and it shows in the writing! The ending was 🤌🤌🤌 I can't wait for book 2!!!

Steampunk fantasy, amazing friendships, great plot twists and a secret society? That’s “A Machine Divine” to you. I really enjoyed this book and what I loved the most about it were the beautiful descriptions of the world the author has created - I felt like I was a part of the story and I could easily imagine the cities, the people. All of the details were carefully placed throughout the story so that it will transport you right to the gorgeous places.
The characters were nice and I loved watching them grow and become better people - especially Callie, she was my favorite.
If you’re looking for a book that is very enjoyable and easy to read, that will keep you on the edge of your seat and that will definitely make you root for the characters - pick this one up, you won’t regret it. Also, the gorgeous cover is a bonus!

Wow what a great book!
Im really in love with this steampunk book with the beautiful cover.
The element I loved the most in it was the Biology and the academy vibe. I'm a biology student myself so I felt really cool I could understand all the terms haha.
I also liked the little snow fox that was the companion from one of the main character. Like how cute is that!
The book is fast paced, full of actions and contains a lot of plottwists. A great book for a quick enjoyable read!
I would recommend this book to everyone!
