It was unexpected to see that this book was actually a “fake” magazine with some manga interludes. I definitely did not know what to expect upon seeing just the cover (even though the under title explains perfectly clearly what the contents are).
I have admired Matsuo Hiromi’s work for a while, her art style is absolutely stunning, the colors and designs especially stand out for how creative, clean and well balanced they are.
Despite magazines being quite prominent in terms of how to get your entertainment back when I was younger, I never quite “got into it”, much less once I entered my adolescence. After reading “Rondo” I have realized that the type of magazine I would actually consume just does not exist other than as a fantasy work. My eyes felt both hungry and satiated by each page, my brain and wish to combine traditional with modern buzzed with inspiration. Every illustration was a work of art, carefully thought of and as such, a pleasure to look at and thoroughly enjoy.
10/10 Never would have thought that such an idea would strike a cord so deeply within me.
An astonishing artwork that remotely acknowledged the legendary B2B fashion magazine: Hanatsubaki by Shiseido Co. Adapting a format of mockazine, this book recreated the history of fictional fashion magazine: "Rondo". With a few short comic style stories as an interlude between the beginning of each new era, "Rondo" manifested the maximalistic Art Nouveausnique illustrative style of so many dazzling artworks from clothing to cosmetics, from furniture to hairstyles, from kimono to Cheongsam. Even the works of mock advertisements are simply stunning. Hiromi Matsuo is not only a talented illustrator, but also a visionary creator. I. Love. This. Artbook.
