The Pallas Group Solutions Contractors have put the hurt on Chinese operations in Mexico. In the aftermath, alliances shift and powers that hadn’t appeared to be involved before start to take a hand.
In a world of unrestricted warfare, PGS has to adapt.
While the Chinese covert war has changed axes, Chris and his fellow contractors head south to deepen the disruption, entering into the Northern Triangle of Central America.
But their involvement is no longer as clandestine as they’d hoped.
And new foes are joining with the old to come after them.
Peter Nealen is a former Recon Marine, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, and something of an aspiring renaissance man (emphasis on aspiring). He has long been a reader of history, philosophy, folklore, science fiction, and fantasy, and is the author of the American Praetorians series of paramilitary thrillers as well as the Jed Horn series of supernatural thrillers.
Peter Nealen's new series continues. If you're familiar with his other series, you have an idea of what to expect: realistic, prescient plots, private military contractors, and some of the most intense action scenes you will read. This series adds some new elements to his writing, as his contractors become increasingly entangled in a dark web of political corruption, legal and financial warfare, foreign influence operations, and a vicious, multi-layered network of cartels, gangs, mercenaries, and assassins working on behalf of unknown actors stretching from the DC to Central America. There's an almost Ludlum-esque level of conspiracy and paranoia to this series, which really sets it apart from other the author's previous series. Although the action scenes are the best you'll read, the most gripping part of this book was the undercover subplot and the growing mystery, which shows how much this author has evolved his craft. Most highly recommended.
Peter Nealen's third entry in his Brave New Disorder very-near-future speculative series, Silver or Lead, picks up soon after the conclusion of the second novel, The Dragon and the Skull. Chris and the A Team are in Tennessee, where an apparent suicide covers a nefarious and grisly attempt at economic warfare, while Nick, Doug, and the B Team are in Honduras, following leads about the shadowy Chinese-connected entity attempting to force American companies into continued business with the PRC.
If you've read any of Nealen's works, then you know what to expect: kinetic action, a demonstration of the litany of research Nealen does when he crafts his works, harrowing odds that separate his books from his contemporaries in the genre, and solid characterization that give a glimpse at the characters as men rather than as operators.
We're three novels into the series and we still haven't had a solid look at the main enemy. That is by design. This is next-generation, asymmetric warfare, fought through proxies, abuse of the legal system, cyberwar, and economic leverage. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we never see the enemy in the clear throughout the entire series. It's intriguing stuff and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Highly recommended for action fans and for those learning about the measures--both actually applied and theoretical--the Chinese government applies to the West in an attempt at global dominance.
The detail and realism that Mr Nealen puts into the story is amazing. I am really enjoying this series and look forward to the next book of the series!
