February 20, 2023When I first started planning The Lost Daughters series, this was the first book I could see clearly in my mind. I knew that I wanted to set one of the books in Cuba, and I could see the historical part of the story as if it were a movie playing through my mind.
When I began writing, I thought that I was going to love the historical storyline the most, but I have to confess that I fell in love with Mateo as soon as I starting working on the contemporary story!
The series began with The Italian Daughter, The Cuban Daughter is book #2 in the series, and the next story will take my readers to Greece... so make sure you don't miss any of The Lost Daughters!

“Who would have thought something so little could have turned my life upside down.”
The protagonists from each timeline, 1950s Cuba and present-day England, are both derailed by little things. For one it’s a split-second choice that leads to the ultimate sacrifice and for another, it’s a little heirloom that sets the character on a different course in life.
Esmeralda Diaz was a good Cuban daughter; she’d never disobeyed her parents and never stepped outside of what was expected of her. When this wealthy society girl meets her chaperone, Christopher Dutton, he makes her question everything about her life. In a blink of an eye, Esmeralda has to decide what is more important to her - her family, or the man she’d fallen in love with.
Claudia is still reeling from a tough year, she’s lost her best friend and her grandmother, so when she meets Mateo and realizes that he understands loss, too, she lets down her guard. Together they learn that they can’t run from memories, they need to live in the moment and they can’t let their past define them. It’s because of Mateo that Claudia is able to give closure to her family’s past and is able to appreciate the legacy that had been kept from her.
In this novel, we see that food has the power to bring people together! Lane showcases the Cuban culture and their love of food and family. I wanted to grab a toast Cubano sandwich and settle in with this great read but when I read about Ropa Viega, I was driven to Google to see if I could find a recipe for it.
Lane also showcases what’s forbidden. For one it’s forbidden love and for another, it’s a forbidden legacy. The journey to attain love and legacy is what drives this book. It’s compelling and emotional. I appreciated the message that “it’s important to understand the past, to feel the connection to those who’ve walked before us.” In both cases, I felt the characters' anguish at the sense of loss. It took courage to step away from what everyone expected of her, but Esmeralda was willing to gamble. You’ll have to read to find out if it paid off. It also took courage to uncover the secret of the Diaz family, but Claudia was willing to gamble, too. Did it pay off? You’ll have to read to find out.

Another fabulous story in this series, set over two timelines and three countries this sees present day Claudia searching for the truth about her grandmother this takes her to Cuba and opens up a whole new world for her, will she find love and the answers she so dearly wants?
1950 in Cuba and Esmeralda Diaz is the apple of her father’s eye the eldest of four sisters the Diaz family are one of the richest on the island running a few sugar mills, when Julio Diaz takes Esmeralda on a trip to sign a contract in London she finally meets someone who just might change her mind on marriage, Christopher Dutton the attraction is instant from both but they must part until Christopher arrives in Cuba and one night will change Esmeralda’s life.
Present day London and Claudia has just discovered that her grandmother was born at Hope’s House, a home for unmarried mothers, she is given a small box that contains two items, a family crest and a business card this starts Claudia on a journey to hopefully discover the truth about her grandmother, what she doesn’t expect is to fall in love with not only Cuba and the people but chef, Matteo.
This is a beautiful story filled with emotion, romance and adventure as Claudia searches for answers and discovers herself on the journey, come along and meet the fabulous characters, there were tears and smiles from this reader, I loved Claudia and Matteo, I loved my trip to Cuba and I do highly recommend this one, I loved it.

Šeimos sagos - mano guilty pleasure. Šeimos paslaptys, santykiai, intrigos, dvi laiko juostos - visa tai, ką mėgstu, radau būtent šioje knygoje. Romano viršelis neabejotinai labai gražus, traukiantis akį ir "alsuojantis" Kuba, o geriausia dar ir tai, kad ir turinys toks pats geras! Nors kūrinio pradžia iš pradžių pasirodė kiek suskubėta, bet netrukus buvau įtraukta į istoriją ir labai man patiko, kaip autorė vaizdavo šalį, aplinką, pačius žmones. Jaučiausi lyg pati ten būčiau nukeliavusi.
Romane pateikiamos dvi meilės linijos ir dvi laiko juostos. Man jos abi vienodai patiko. Tiek Klaudijos ir Matėjo, tiek skaudi Esmeraldos ir Kristoferio meilės istorija, kuri mane tikrai palietė. Visi personažai įdomūs, skirtingi - nebuvo nuobodu skaityti ir tikrai labai patiko.🥰
Jei esate šeimos sagų gerbėjai, rekomenduoju perskaityti šią serijos dalį apie Kubą. Neabejoju, kad tikrai labai patiks!🥰

"Córka z Kuby" opiera się na podobnych schematach jak "Córka z Włoch", - akcja przebiega dwutorowo (kiedyś i obecnie), jest wątek kulinarny i pięknie opisana Hawana.To wszystko jest tak przyjemne i otulające, że bardzo miło spędzam czas z tym cyklem.
Druga część sprawiła, że pod koniec mocno się wzruszyłam. Smutny los spotkał jedną z bohaterek. Źle się o tym czytało w czasach, w których jest jak jest (nie będę opisywała o co chodzi, aby nie zdradzić Wam fabuły).
Polecam, bo to dobre książki na zbliżające się lato!
Druga część sprawiła, że pod koniec mocno się wzruszyłam. Smutny los spotkał jedną z bohaterek. Źle się o tym czytało w czasach, w których jest jak jest (nie będę opisywała o co chodzi, aby nie zdradzić Wam fabuły).

Ох, не знам какво да кажа за тази книга! Взех я заради корицата. ( Разбира се! ) И се заредих с желание да се потопя в екзотиката на Куба. Място, което примамва мечтите ми на пътешественик. До тук добре.
Историята върви в две времеви линии ( нещо , което често е причина книгата да ме изгуби за читател някъде по средата). Куба преди революцията на Кастро е рай на богати земевладелци с плантации, чиято стока се търгува чак в Европа. Там, където има много богати, има и много бедни, които са страдали и са искали промяна. Идва Фидел Кастро, представя бунтарски идеи, хората му вярват, той прави революция и обръща Куба на 360 градуса. Постепенно същите тези хора, които са недоволствали срещу богатите фамилии и капитала, се оглеждат и виждат, че нещата не са станали много по - розови. Само хората с парите, които са поддържали икономиката и чара на страната, ги няма. И така Куба живее в недоимък, кара стари коли, не от страст към ретрото, а от немай - къде и се лишава от доста неща, за да сложи храна на масата. Но пък музиката е навсякъде по улиците, хората са приветливи и усмихнати ( особено към чужденците, които оставят пари в заведенията и в семейните им домове, където наемат стая ). Разказа от 1950 година хич не ме заинтересува . То целият тон на книгата беше монотонен като рубрика в местен ежедневник. Но в съвременния разказ поне се описваше Хавана с нейните крайбрежни булеварди, плажовете с бял пясък и палми, рифовете, пълни с морски обитатели, които може да се наблюдават при гмуркане и, разбира се, кубинската храна , предавана чрез рецепти от поколение на поколение. Тона на това екзотично " пътуване " си го настроих аз сама, защото иначе и там всичко се влачеше на една честота. Не случайно, значи, корицата на книгата отпред е ярка и цветна, а отзад - сива и застинала. Така си беше самия сюжет. И това се оказва първото ми книжно разочарование за тази година!

Cuba, 1950. Sinds het overlijden van haar moeder voelt Esmeralda zich verantwoordelijk voor haar zussen en ze weet dat ze vanwege haar status op een dag met een geschikte man zal moeten trouwen, maar ze verlangt naar iemand die haar compleet weet te overdonderen. Als ze eenmaal halsoverkop verliefd wordt, weet ze echter zeker dat haar vader díe relatie nooit zal goedkeuren…
Londen, heden. Na een intens jaar vol ingrijpende veranderingen boekt Claudia impulsief een vlucht naar Havana nadat ze een geheimzinnig kistje met aanwijzingen over haar oma’s verleden in ontvangst heeft genomen. Door haar beeldende, vloeiende en levendige schrijfstijl neemt Soraya Lane je helemaal mee naar Cuba en ze dompelt je onder in een romantisch verhaal vol dramatische ontwikkelingen. De wisselende tijdlijnen en perspectieven zorgen ervoor dat je beide vrouwen, hun levensomstandigheden, hun dromen en de verwachtingspatronen waar zij tegenaan lopen steeds beter leert kennen, ze ontwikkelen zich en hoewel de connectie niet moeilijk te raden is, worden beide verhaallijnen ondanks deze voorspelbaarheid mooi opgebouwd.
De plichtsgetrouwe Esmeralda heeft haar hele leven netjes binnen de lijntjes gekleurd en haar vader nooit tegengesproken, maar voelt nu de drang om voor zichzelf te kiezen en moet de moeilijkste keuze van haar leven maken. Claudia heeft al belangrijke keuzes voor zichzelf gemaakt maar haar nieuwe contacten en de ontdekkingen op haar reis zorgen ervoor dat ze zich echt open durft te stellen en ze staat zichzelf toe om weer geluk te vinden. De personages zijn goed neergezet, je wilt het liefst in het boek duiken om alle heerlijke gerechten te proeven en hoewel ik niet zo gek ben op liefde op het eerste gezicht in verhalen als de auteur, voel je de chemie tussen de koppels en is het geheel meeslepend, liefdevol, warm en soms tragisch.
Dit is een verhaal over sterke vrouwen die hun hart volgen, over avontuur, moed, opoffering en verlies, over geheimen, geschiedenis en belangrijke relaties, over leven in het moment en dierbare herinneringen, over het vinden van magie, familie en liefde. Enkele gebeurtenissen hadden iets verder uitgewerkt kunnen worden om zo meer diepgang te creëren, maar door de vlotte stijl en de boeiende ontwikkelingen is dit een echte pageturner die je het liefst niet neer wilt leggen voordat je het boek uit hebt. Stop De Cubaanse dochter in je koffer, want dit is een heerlijke weglezer om deze zomer van te genieten!

De plichtsgetrouwe Esmeralda heeft haar hele leven netjes binnen de lijntjes gekleurd en haar vader nooit tegengesproken, maar voelt nu de drang om voor zichzelf te kiezen en moet de moeilijkste keuze van haar leven maken. Claudia heeft al belangrijke keuzes voor zichzelf gemaakt maar haar nieuwe contacten en de ontdekkingen op haar reis zorgen ervoor dat ze zich echt open durft te stellen en ze staat zichzelf toe om weer geluk te vinden. De personages zijn goed neergezet, je wilt het liefst in het boek duiken om alle heerlijke gerechten te proeven en hoewel ik niet zo gek ben op liefde op het eerste gezicht in verhalen als de auteur, voel je de chemie tussen de koppels en is het geheel meeslepend, liefdevol, warm en soms tragisch.
Dit is een verhaal over sterke vrouwen die hun hart volgen, over avontuur, moed, opoffering en verlies, over geheimen, geschiedenis en belangrijke relaties, over leven in het moment en dierbare herinneringen, over het vinden van magie, familie en liefde. Enkele gebeurtenissen hadden iets verder uitgewerkt kunnen worden om zo meer diepgang te creëren, maar door de vlotte stijl en de boeiende ontwikkelingen is dit een echte pageturner die je het liefst niet neer wilt leggen voordat je het boek uit hebt. Tai antroji "Prarastų dukrų" serijos knyga. Pirmoji skaitėsi lengvai bei maloniai, buvo smagu nukeliauti į Italiją. Šios knygos dėka, gavau bilietą į saulėtają Kubą.
1950-ieji metai Kuboje. Esmeralda Dias pametuso galvą dėl tėvo verslo partnerio iš Londono. Deja, bet jos tėvas niekada nepritartų jų draugystei...
Dabrtiniai laikai Londone. Čia Klaudija sužino, jog jos močiutė yra gimusi Houpės namuose, kurie buvo skirti vienišoms moterims. Viskas kas jai liko iš praeities - išblukęs herbas bei vizitinė kortelė.
Moteris pasiryžta išsaiškinti iš kur iš tiesų yra kilusi jos močiutė. Taip ji atsiduria Havanoje.
Tai buvo dar viena lengvai skaitoma, turinti lengvos intrigos šydą istorija. Čia nebuvo didelių netikėtų bei šokiruojančių siužeto vingių, tačiau istorija tikrai mane įtraukė, o ir ją skaityti buvo gera bei lengva.

Yet another great book in the series. I will not lie, I preferred the first one, but this book also had a great story and some nice characters.

Mit "Die vermisste Tochter" geht es endlich weiter in der Reihe um die verlorenen Töchter. Dieses Mal erhält Claudia völlig überraschend ein Erbstück ihrer Großmutter, das sie vor einige Rätsel stellt. Die Spur führt nach Kuba zu der Familie Diaz, denen in den 1950er Jahren eine große Zuckerplantage gehörte.
Kuba hat mir als Setting sehr gefallen, da es zum einen mal etwas anderes anderes und zum anderen hat die Autorin es geschafft das Setting sehr interessant zu vermitteln. Es war spannend, abwechslungsreich und mit einem sehr interessanten Flair. Die Atmosphäre war bunt und sommerlich.
Die Einblicke in das Kuba der 1950er Jahre war sehr interessant, allerdings war mir hier die Geschichte und insbesondere die Verknüpfung zur Großmutter ein wenig zu kurz geraten. Hier hätte ich mir manchmal noch tiefere Einblicke gewünscht.
Claudia zu begleiten hat ebenfalls viel Spaß gemacht, auch wenn ich mit ihr als Charakter nicht komplett warm geworden bin. Sie war mir manchmal ein wenig zu distanziert und hier konnte ich ihre Entscheidungen nicht immer nachvollziehen. Auch die Liebesgeschichte war mir ein bisschen zu gewollt und oberflächlich. Matei blieb dabei komplett blass.
Ich finde die Reihe und ihre Idee wirklich toll. Hier gefällt mir insbesondere die verschiedenen Settings und Länder, die man als Leser bereist.

„Dukra iš Kubos“ – pasakojimas iš dviejų laiko perpektyvų: viena iš Esmeraldos, gyvenusios 1950 metais Kuboje, kita iš Klaudijos, apsistojusios šių dienų Londone. Man dažniausiai patinka tokia pasakojimo sandara, visgi beveik visada simpatizuoju vienai iš veikėjų. Šį kartą įdomiau ir lengviau skaityti buvo Esmeraldos dalis.
Pats istorijos siužetas – Klaudija mėgina įminti savo močiutės paslaptį ir tai ją atveda į Kubą, buvo gana nuspėjamas. Gal tai neleido visiškai įsijausti į tekstą, nes puslapius versti į priekį sekėsi sunkokai. Trūko intrigos, kuri mane skatintų tai daryti. Esmeraldos paslaptis buvo gana lengvai įmenama, o Klaudijos personažas man pasirodė be cinkelio.
Čia yra ir meilės linija, bet šį kartą po kūną nebėgiojo šiurpuliukai. Nepavyko visiškai įsitraukti, nes ir Matėjus nepaliko didesnio įspūdžio.
Vienintelis dalykas, kuris, mano manymu, autorei puikiai pasisekė – tai aplinkos perteikimas. Skaitydama mačiau prieš akis aprašytas Kubos vietas, gana aiškiai suvokiau politinę situaciją, nes tekste buvo pateikta nemažai detalių apie tai.

Der zweite Band dieser Romanreihe entführt uns in die faszinierende Geschichte von Claudia, einer Londonerin, die durch eine mysteriöse Holzschachtel auf die Spuren ihrer Großmutter stößt. Die darin enthaltenen Hinweise führen sie auf eine Reise nach Havanna, wo sie die Geheimnisse ihrer Familiengeschichte zu ergründen versucht. Parallel dazu wird die Geschichte von Esmeralda erzählt, einer Kubanerin aus den 1950er Jahren, die sich während einer geschäftlichen Reise nach London in ihren Geschäftspartner verliebt. Doch wie sind diese beiden Erzählstränge miteinander verbunden?
Als Fan von Geschichten mit mehreren Zeitebenen war ich von der fortlaufenden Spannung des Romans begeistert. Soraya Lanes Schreibstil ist sehr anschaulich, er vermittelte mir ein lebendiges Bild von Kuba in den 50er Jahren. Durch das Buch erlangte ich zudem ein tieferes Verständnis für Kuba und seine Geschichte. Die Protagonistinnen Claudia und Esmeralda wirkten auf mich sehr authentisch, und ich konnte mich gut in Claudias emotionale Reise hineinversetzen.
Obwohl ich bereits viele Bücher mit ähnlicher Struktur gelesen habe, die ebenfalls auf verschiedenen Zeitebenen spielen, hat mich dieses Werk nicht komplett überrascht, da es wenig Neues bot. Dennoch handelt es sich definitiv um ein gutes Buch, das die Faszination für Geschichten aus unterschiedlichen Epochen aufrecht erhält.

The author has done it again with a story from the past of 2 young lovers, Esmeralda and Christopher who fall in love and 2 present day people, Claudia and Mateo who also fall in love in Cuba. Claudia meets Mateo in Cuba when she flies there from London searching for clues about her grandmothers past when she receives a small box with 2 items from an attorney on behalf of an orphanage. The description of Cuba has the reader longing to visit such a fascinating place. The lost daughters series are truly wonderful reads, that make you smile and feel sorry for what happened in the past. They are books you don’t want to put down till you find out what happens in the end. I can’t wait to read next book in this series, and hope author will write more!

Oh Boy! It has been a hot minute since I read a Historical Fiction book. The Cuban Daughter: The Lost Daughters Book 2 by Soraya Lane made me wonder why. It was her Historical Fiction books about World War II that got me interested in the genre in the first place. If you haven't read anything by her yet, please do yourself a favor and go to her book list and pick something out. She makes learning history enjoyable and her stories are really wonderful.
This story has two timelines. One takes place starting at about 1950 in Cuba and the other one is present day in London and a little in Florida. I love how the two timelines work together to bring you to the conclusion of the book.
The main characters in the present day are Claudia and Mateo. I loved both of them. In the earlier time period in Cuba we have Esmeralda and Christopher. Their love story will make you swoon. Well, so will the one between Claudia and Mateo. You want nothing but the best for these four. Life is filled with family secrets, love and loss, pride and mistakes.
This book was so hard to put down. I actually did right in the middle of it to help an author out doing a last minute beta read on her new novel. I was able to jump right back into this one and not miss a beat. This story was heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time. It made me mad and happy all at once. You have to read The Cuban Daughter to know what I mean.
Soraya Lane has once again turned out a novel that broke my heart and mended it back together again. It reminded me why I love Historical Fiction and that I have been away from it for way too long. Until next time…Happy Reading.

The reason I read historical fiction is because of books like this. Jumping between present day and 1950s Havana, I learned more about the culture of Cuba, and why so many fled their beloved country to never return. I especially liked Esmeralda and her sister's stories of growing up as one of the elite in Havana. I also read her previous novel, The Italian Daughter, which I enjoyed as well. I will be watching for the next book in the series. I definitely recommend!

This book is the first I’ve read by this author and I’m so happy to have read it. It’s book two in the lost sister series and I will definitely add book one to my TBR. If you haven’t read book one yet, don’t worry as it can be read as a standalone.
This book has duel timelines, something I’ve came to love in a storyline. This one we go between Cuba 1950 and modern day London / Cuba and Florida.
We have Esmeralda, the beautiful oldest sister out of 4 girls, daughter to the rich sugar tycoon. In 1950 in their culture everything was done so proper, no time alone with a man, coming out balls, arranged marriages and definitely no falling in love with a non Cuban man. This brings us to Christopher who is the non Cuban man, the man who gives Esmeralda butterflies and completely steals her heart. They meet on a business trip that she took with her father to London and let me tell you this trip changes her life in a serious way.
We then fast forward to Claudia who is trying to find family connections. I loved this girl, she really puts her heart on her sleeve and luckily has the support of a really close family. In searching for connections she finds herself too, and makes some life changing decisions.
I won’t say more as I really don’t want to spoil this book for you.
I absolutely loved this storyline even though it was heartbreaking at times. In the background there was so much hope for both of our leading ladies.
Loved the settings, loved the whole adventure side of the storyline.
Great easy read that will have you hooked from the start, I absolutely recommend you grab this book.

Niet alleen de prachtige landschappen en Havana worden zo omschreven dat je het gevoel hebt dat je er zelf rondloopt – ook de Cubaanse keuken komt uitgebreid aan bod. Claudia ontmoet Mateo, de eigenaar van een foodtruck. Wanneer er over zijn empanadas en ropa vieja wordt gesproken loopt het water me in de mond! Je wordt helemaal meegevoerd door de gedetailleerde en filmische vertelstijl. Ik wil naar Cuba!
Met De Cubaanse dochter heeft Lane weer een heerlijk boek geschreven dat je kan blíjven lezen, ik ben zo blij dat dit een serie is! I absolutely loved this second book in The Lost Daughters series.The Lost Daughters series centers around Hope House, a home for unwed mothers, with seven women receiving a box with clues that hint at secrets from the past. This story follows Claudia as she seeks to uncover the secrets that surround her grandmother's birth. Readers will travel between London and Cuba, in this dual timeline story that takes place in 1951 and present day.
I am usually more drawn to the historical story, but in this case I absolutely loved the contemporary storyline. I did not expect to fall in love with the Cuban setting, but found it enchanting. The author skillfully weaves historical details of pre-Castro era Cuba with that of present day.
Strong family relationships are central to both storylines. Not only did I fall in love with the Diaz sisters, but found I would love to step into Mateo's family kitchen. This is a story of love and sacrifice, and of choices that can change the direction of our lives. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I happily lost myself in the second book in the Lost Daughters series.
It has all the elements I look for in a good read: secrets, family history, searching, and romance.
I knew how the book would play out, but there’s comfort in the knowledge even when the “prince” turns into a croaker.
I was very taken with Mateo, I would “cook” in his food truck any time.
I’ve read quite a bit about Cuba in fiction but there’s always more to learn.

Another fantastic book by Soraya Lane! This is the 10th book I have read of hers and I can’t wait for the next one! In all her books, I learn new things which is always a bonus! Her books are well researched and the story that she weaves with historical facts is fantastic!
