Monstorm: A Charity Anthology of Horror

Rate this book
Storms are the epitome of nature at her most primal, savage, and untamable. They inspire awe and terror in equal measure. When storms unleash their fury, nothing and no one can stand against them.

Hurricane Ian was such a storm. When Ian ripped into South Florida in the fall of 2022, homes and businesses were reduced to piles of rubble. Cleanup and recovery were slow, and as of the printing of this book, there is still much to be done to get things back to normal for those in the region whose lives were turned upside down. This book contains 20 stories by seasoned genre veterans as well as fresh voices and represents the horror community’s response to hurricane Ian. There are stories about storms, the devastation they can cause, and what they reveal about the people who live through them, stories of tearing wind, driving rain, blizzards, hurricanes. These are stories of terror, but this book is one of hope, produced to help raise money to support those who, in Ian’s wake, need help most. The proceeds from this volume will go directly into the hands of the local All Faiths Food Bank, which serves the areas most affected by Hurricane Ian. Storms will always come. What matters most is how we respond to them.

This book is a terrific anthology of twenty storm-related short horror stories that will give you the chills. As someone who experienced Hurricane Ian firsthand, I could relate to some of the stories. I highly recommend this book because it is outstanding, and the proceeds go straight to charity. Kudos to the authors and everyone involved.

Having survived a direct hit from Hurricane Ian in 2022, I truly thought nothing could possibly be any scarier than that. Then along came Monstorm...

The stories in this collection attack from all conceivable angles, what might just go wrong during a storm or subsequent weather event. Both triggering and cathartic, the stories in this anthology force you to stare your fears right in the "eye" and see just how much worse things can get.

This unique collection was thoughtfully put together and features some of the area's most talented writers. And bonus: proceeds benefit Hurricane survivors through local area food banks. I highly recommend this book!

This is a charity anthology published by Madness Heart Press to benefit those affected by Hurricane Ian. There are 20 stories relating to different types of weather by several authors I had never heard of before. This is why I love reading anthologies, because I get introduced to new authors with amazing talent that I never knew I needed to read. All of these are good, but there are some gems in the group.

These stories are powerful. They evoke so much emotion. A few even left me stunned. Several made me say, “Wow” to myself when finishing the story. This anthology is loaded with great writing and worth the time to read. So whatever your pleasure, wind, rain, floods, lightening or snow, these stories are sure to please. Go get your copy and help support those victims of Hurricane Ian!

The first major storm I experienced as a Floridan was Irma, and suffice it to say, if you’re not afraid of storms, you probably should be. If all of the natural reasons to be cautious if not terrified aren’t enough for you, then Monstorm, edited by Josh Strnad and Matt Masucci, will give you a whole new heap of unnatural and supernatural reasons to add to your list.

What surprised and pleased me most about this collection (aside from the fact that sales of the book go towards supporting the All Faiths Food Bank) is both the quality and diversity of stories it contains. It opens with Donna J. W. Munro’s “Floods and Melancholy” which delves into the connection between weather and witchcraft. Derik Cavignano’s “Temple of the Righteous Harvest” gives us a storm cult story with a touch of “Rosemary’s Baby.” While cosmic horror isn’t typically my preferred subgenre, Michael Schuhler’s piece was fantastic and memorable, and the same goes for Owl Goingback’s twist on the old “deal with the devil.” The collection is not without playfulness as well – Sarah Licht’s “gotcha” at the end of her “Archival Data Set 27-1” did, in fact, get me and Christine Morgan’s reimagining of the biblical flood story was cleverly done. True to its title, Douglas Ford’s “Gatortooth Sam” delivered a nice bite, “The Wind” by Lisa Morton put me (as I assume was intended) in mind of Ray Bradbury’s story by the same title, and KC Grifant’s “What Storms Bring” resonated deeply, reminding me that many, maybe most of us here, are only ever really one terrible storm away from losing everything we know – including our own identity.

I could go on, but it's hurricane season here and the clouds are darkening; the rain intensifying. I’ll probably lose power soon. That’s okay, I’ve got everything here I need to make it through the storm, including bottled water, a full tank of gas, flashlights, snacks and the perfect reading material.
