In high school, Eliza felt like a square peg in a round hole. Though part of her wanted to fit in, the other part knew perfectly well that her penchant for killing zombies, vampires, and werewolves precluded any notion of a normal teenage social life. Apparently her boyfriend held similar feelings when he dumped her. It wasn't really her fault though. She'd been born with a condition that gave her ample ability to slaughter monsters and pretty much anyone else with relative ease.
Something resided deep inside her.
Something paranormal.
Something powerful.
Something called the Wend.
Whenever the possibility of danger became a probability, the Wend rose up and took over. Because of this ability, Eliza was recruited by an organization called Blackstone. To make sure she agreed to join them, they gave her an offer she couldn't refuse. Blackstone was tasked with defeating the Grimm; bad guys from another dimension who were bent on destroying this one.
Author Trafton Crandall has written an action packed hang on to the seat of your pants teenage fantasy novel that should not be missed. Written in first person, it jumps from one death defying thrill ride to the next. Coupled with interesting characters who express the full gamut of attributes, like loyalty, betrayal, self doubt, and even puppy love, Blackstone should not be missed.

This book from an unknown author was not what I expected, Why? Because for years I stayed away from science-fiction novels and female protagonist, after all, they have disappointed me time and time again...

Blackstone was a novel proved me wrong time and time again. The female lead Eliza was a headstrong, confident and arrogant but don't let those traits steer you away because along with her journey she gets a reality check. From her arrogance, she learns that Eliza is not always right and she grows into a young woman I have grown to love!

The characters she meets get just as much screen time if not more as the pace picks up from chapter to chapter. I finished this book on a single day.....A-SINGLE-DAY and after I was finished left me with an empty hole in my heart. The thirst for reading more of Eliza and her journey to saving not only humanity but figuring her place in the world is never ending and I look forward to the next installment.

Anyone fans of Starwars with a sprinkle of Harry Potter and a dash of guardians of the galaxy should definitely check out this action-packed humorous masterpiece!

As someone who felt like an outcast in high school, and lets face it, most of my life in general, this story instantly spoke to me when Eliza Grant felt the same way. The story is a beautiful blend of science-fiction and fantasy that keeps my love for both of those genres happy at the same time. You can guess some of the inspirations the author had throughout reading the book. There are subtle references to some science-fiction greats that are fun to come across! I didn't fully know what to expect when I first started reading, but as I continued, I found myself wanting to read the next chapter, and the next, and pretty soon I found myself wanting to read more of the series. This was a fun introduction by author Trafton Crandall and I'm looking forward to reading more!

Some spoilers follow so please read the rest at your own discretion.

The main issue I had with the book is that an explanation was not given concerning the age of David. David appears as the same age as Eliza and the others, yet he claims to have trained recruits for twenty years. The makings of a relationship between Eliza and David would be odd considering Eliza's age at the time. Essentially David would be nearly forty years old (37-38) while Eliza is 17. That didn't sit well when I got to that portion of the book. Now with this being a series questions can be answered over multiple books of course, however, given the age and implied age of characters, this was one that would have been important to be answer.

The second issue I had with the story concerns chapter thirty. I assume that is some kind of clone of Eliza's Uncle Paul, yet an explanation was not fully given. I was left wondering exactly who this replica of Eliza's uncle was and why he wouldn't have recognized her if he was intended to be a perfect replica.

A minor thing is that the beginning of the book seemed a little too much like an advertisement. There were a lot of name drops for popular establishments which I get connects the story to the real world, but at the same time it seemed like the advertising in movies where the camera has to focus on the Burger King wrapper of an already eaten burger.

The glaring question concerning the characters ages of the intended love interests leaves me wanting an answer to that question. That put a rather looming spoiler on an otherwise enjoyable book. I would have gone below three stars if I hadn't enjoyed the rest of the book. I know its a series and the age question will probably be addressed in a future entry, but it is something I would have liked answered when it was presented.

Title : Blackstone: A Young Adult Sci-Fi Fantasy Adventure: (Eliza Grant Book 1)
Author : Trafton Crandall

Trafton Crandall's Blackstone: A Young Adult Sci-Fi Fantasy Adventure is an exciting and action-packed book that transports readers to a world of aliens, superpowers, and hidden training programs. Eliza Grant, a 17-year-old high school girl who finds out she is the last Guardian Protector of the Earth with the ability to control the Dark Energy of the Universe, is the protagonist of the novel.

The engrossing and captivating writing style of Crandall enables readers to relate to Eliza, the main character, right away. Eliza's voyage is suspenseful and exciting, making it a compelling page-turner, from the lively and amusing opening scene in Central Park to the difficulties she encounters at Blackstone.

The Grimm, hostile shape-shifting aliens from another universe, bring an exciting and ominous element to the story, setting the stage for action-packed scenes and pivotal encounters. The interdimensional portals and Blackstone's training program provide intricacy and depth to the plot, and the world-building is excellent.

Eliza herself is one of my favorite literature characters. She is a sympathetic and independent lead character who fights with the pressure of her obligations as well as the difficulties of growing up. Her quest for self-discovery and resolve to defend the defenseless make her an engaging figure to follow.

The sci-fi and fantasy components in Blackstone are expertly woven together, making it evocative of well-known series like Star Wars and Harry Potter. While some of the events may be beyond the pale of belief, Crandall's storytelling prowess and sense of humor keep the novel enjoyable.

I wholeheartedly endorse Blackstone to readers who want action-packed, otherworldly stories with a dash of romance and a strong female lead. The first book by Trafton Crandall is very promising, and I can't wait to see where Eliza's adventure takes her in the coming books. This exciting and inventive journey will surely appeal to young people and enthusiasts of the genre.

Trafton Crandall’s "Nobody Asked Me if I Wanted to Save the Universe" takes readers on an exciting, intergalactic journey through the eyes of Eliza Grant. Grant is a 17-year-old high school student who isn’t just dealing with normal teen issues, she is in fact the last Keeper of the Wend, with the fate of the entire universe on her shoulders.
From the very start, the book hooks you with Eliza's wry, humorous voice as she navigates being both a high school student, and a powerful 'Guardian' sworn to fight interdimensional threats. Recruited into Blackstone, a top-secret government school training young warriors like her, she finds herself in a brutal training regime designed to prepare her to take on the Grimm, terrifying shape-shifting aliens who want to destroy the planet.
What makes Crandall’s work shine is the strong, relatable heroine at its core. Eliza’s journey is not just about mastering superpowers or fighting evil - it’s about growing into herself and confronting the fear, doubt, and loneliness that come with being thrust into such a massive responsibility. Her wit and determination make her easy to sympathise with, and her emotional struggles bring depth to the fast-paced, action-packed plot.
The world-building is equally compelling, blending elements of high-octane science fiction and fantasy. Blackstone, the secret government school, is a richly imagined setting that brings together advanced technology, magic, and a cast of unique characters, each with their own abilities and secrets. The Grimm, the novel’s primary antagonists, are both terrifying and fascinating, adding an element of constant tension.

An exciting and epic adventure!

In "Blackstone," we are thrust into the extraordinary life of Eliza Grant, a seemingly typical 17-year-old high school student whose reality is anything but ordinary. The book opens with Eliza's relatable musings about her life, however, beneath her average exterior lies a powerful secret: she is the last in a long line of Guardians known as Keepers of the Wend, tasked with wielding the Dark Energy of the Universe to protect the innocent and combat evil.

Eliza is recruited into Blackstone, to confront the shape-shifting aliens known as the Grimm and the fun begins! The writing is sharp and engaging, effortlessly pulling readers into Eliza's world where danger lurks at every corner.

But "Blackstone" isn’t just about the adrenaline-fueled battles; it also explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the complexities of growing up in a world where normalcy is a fleeting concept. The romantic elements woven into Eliza’s journey provide a heartwarming counterbalance to the action, offering moments of lightness amidst the chaos.

For fans of series like Star Wars and Harry Potter, "Blackstone" is a compelling addition to the young adult fantasy genre. This book is a captivating page-turner that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. With its blend of thrilling action, rich character development, and a dash of romance, it is a must-read for anyone looking to escape into a world of adventure where ordinary teens become extraordinary heroes.

We start with a Zombie chase. My daughter is watching yet another something, a film or over extended American series, with zombies in it, on Netflix at the moment, the walking dead are a well-worn trope.

Anyway, thankfully this is not a sassy teen girl verses zombie apocalypse escapade, but more a science fiction, fantasy, Harry Pottery amalgamation, with perhaps a touch of the Matrix and Ursula Le Guin, well, for the latter, very loosely.

Our protagonist, Eliza Grant, perhaps a little unoriginally, the guardian of a superpower, in this case the Wend, is recruited by a future CIA or MI6 like organisation, The Blackstone. There follows, some high octave high jinks where we cross dimensions (Another science fiction staple (and yes used by me in my novel Woken!)), that house a zoo of weird beings, mythical creatures and aliens, and, of course, we have life or death encounters asunder.

An old fogey like myself prefers something a little more sedate and intellectual these days, but, if I could travel back in time to my teen years (Heaven forbid!), I am sure I would have lapped this adventure up quicker than a cat could demolish a saucer of milk. Sadly, my teen years were full of Agatha Christie and the horror of Stephen King and James Herbert, where were you in the 1970’s Trafton Crandall?

An epic read!

A story that would have you on the edge of your seat. The author clearly focused on themes relating to determination, courage, trust, compassion, friendship, family, sacrifice, and discovering one's destiny and path. Eliza Grant's journey was rough and grim from the start dealing with flesh eating zombies to aliens feeding off the dark aspect of humanity. Eliza's heart knows no bounds when protecting those who can't fend for themselves including baby dragons.

The plot unfolds as we witness Eliza Grant's growth from her training at Blackstone and mustered against trials with the aid of her loyal friends and family Paul, Marry, David, Nicole, Carrie, and Thomas and Colonel Nash. Eliza's biggest challenge when she is confronted with her hopes and fears in order to be prepared for unknown threats. Yet, she takes her role seriously as protector of her world and never backs down from any challenge even when billions of lives are at stake and saving others close to them.

If you are looking for a book to pick up full of action and adventure, this one I would recommend to my friends. A fantastic read!

This story has everything: zombies, dragons, high-tech gadgets, magic powers, other worlds, aliens – the lot, all packed into an action heavy tale.
It begins with Eliza Grant, an 18-year-old girl with tons of attitude, who is being looked after by her uncle after the death of her parents. Eliza is also being trained to use her powers by a non-human character called Mary when she slips into another world as she sleeps.
Things start to become serious when she is picked out for a special training school for new recruits – Blackstone – to help fight dark forces which are overtaking the world, and then her life becomes strange and wonderful.
The clever writing includes many myths and legends, universal truths, and positive and negative character traits.
At times it felt like a video game come to life, as I was drawn into the different scenarios and landscapes, especially during the training scenes at Blackstone, so many different abilities and creatures!
A clever and entertaining book for YA, with a few twists, too.

Epic journey filled with magic, mystery, and adventure.

But it's not just the world-building that shines; the action-packed plot kept me on the edge throughout. Every twist and turn left me eagerly flipping the pages, desperate to uncover the next clue alongside Eliza and her friends.

Overall, Blackstone is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of both sci-fi and fantasy. With its engaging characters, intricate plot, and imaginative world-building.

Compelling Adventure

This book surpassed my initial expectations. Eliza, the main character, exhibited a formidable blend of determination, self-assurance, and hubris. She's just on the edge of unlikable, which is something I seek in a book.

Through a series of humbling experiences, Eliza is forced to adapt, leaving arrogance behind. By book's end, her journey from obstinate confidence to a more nuanced and relatable young woman is well drawn.

Crandall's deft narrative construction ensured the supporting cast of characters received plenty of space to develop while still the plot surged forward, gaining momentum with each chapter.

I found myself engrossed, finishing the book in two days over three readings. It's a great read for all ages, and especially good for the YA crowd!

I was looking for a good Sci-Fi book when I stumbled on “Blackstone: A Young Adult SciFi Fantasy Adventure” by Trafton Crandall. Don’t let the “Young Adult” part of the title fool you…this is first-rate Sci-Fi for everyone, teen or adult! The story follows 17 year old Eliza as she battles zombies and aliens to save Earth! The action is non-stop, and the story is surprisingly nuanced. The characters are well-developed, and the plot intriguing. It’s an injustice to say this book is only Sci-Fi and Fantasy…it is also a good thriller and has elements of a mystery as well. If the reader has a sharp eye you will also catch some subtle social commentary as well! Overall, this is an excellent book and you will enjoy reading it. This book is also the first in a series, and I can’t wait for the next installment!

Saving the Universe Was Not on Eliza’s To Do List

Eliza Grant was just trying to survive high school. Now? She’s fighting aliens, mastering ancient powers, and training to become a Blackstone Ranger Earth’s last line of defense against the shape shifting Grimm.

As the last Keeper of the Wend, Eliza wields dark cosmic energy and carries the weight of a forgotten legacy. Recruited into Blackstone, a top secret government school for extraordinary teens, she’s thrown into brutal training, dangerous missions, and a war she never asked to fight.

Packed with action, sarcasm, romance, and intergalactic threats, Blackstone is a wild ride for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Star Wars. Because saving the universe shouldn’t be part of junior year but Eliza’s not exactly normal. And neither is this mission.

A well-written page turner that has a dash of Harry Potter, mixed together with Twilight and Kingsmen for good measure. The story is told in the first person as we follow the young Eliza Grant, who is the keeper of a mysterious power called the Wend. Along the way she is dubiously recruited by the shady otherwordly organisation known as Blackstone.

As we follow Eliza, she soon finds herself in a battle of survival that across many dimensions. Along the she encounters some interesting characters, both mythological and extra-terrestial.

Full of well crafted characters, Blackstone is an exciting story that will keep the most ardent fantasy entertained. I am to curious to find out if there we will get to see more of young Eliza, if we do I would certainly give it a read.

A definite roller-coaster of excitement. Eliza Grant is a loner with a special power--she controls the dark power of the Wend and sneaks out at night to fight evil, but a secret organization, Blackstone, is watching and recruits her by kidnapping her only living relative as an incentive. What a start!
This story is non-stop and has it all, powerful aliens from other dimension intent on killing all life on Earth, secret societies, betrayal, lots of jealous conflicts between the new recruits, and did I mention dragons.
This is book one of I expect many, but doesn't leave you hanging at the end. Can't wait for what adventures are coming next.
An enjoyable page-turner and perfect for young adults of all ages.

Coming-of-age in Style

I must admit Blackstone is not the type of book I usually read. However, someone recommended the novel, and I decided to try it—and I’m glad I did.

I was fascinated by the craftsmanship of the author, who skillfully weaved a multi-layered story that develops on different levels—the coming-of-age of a troubled high school loner and social outcast, Eliza Grant, who, to survive those traumatic and confusing teenage years, creates an alternate universe populated by flesh-eating zombies, magic, aliens, beam traveling cars that can reach London from New York in ten minutes, and larger-than-life villains intent on destroying the world. It can also be read simply as an action-adventure modern-day romp.

Crandall’s creativity is outstanding, mixing and matching genres—thriller, dystopian, young adult—in a captivating potpourri of action sequences. I liked many things about Blackstone, including the easy-to-read first-person narrative, the descriptions, the characterizations, and the banter—but I enjoyed the author’s boundless imagination the most.

The narrative is an astonishing work of fiction, an action-packed zombie land with a twist with lots of plots. Reading this story was like looking at a movie. These creatures are dead, feast on human brains and flesh, live like humans, and feed and make a community to live in.

The characters are vivid and scary, and some with a sassy attitude. It is an outstanding Sci-Fi with creativity and a page-turner indeed. The Aiens to reach London was an adventure you will want to read.

Take a zombie journey. You can't go wrong it's a masterpiece. I highly recommend this book; buy your copy today.

I'm amazed at how much I enjoyed this story. Most books in the fantasy genre tend to include creatures with crazy names that I can't pronounce. There are no wizards or dragons in this book, but everyday people, maybe a few aliens, who try to save the world.
The fantasy is entrenched into the everyday world, making it more believable. I love the author's descriptions of scenery, including my favorite stomping ground, Central Park. I'm sure I've seen zombies in the park masquerading as people.
Eliza grows and matures from her harrowing experiences, making this a perfect coming-of-age tale.

We soon learn that she is chosen to be the keeper of the Wend, a supernatural power that allows her to kill all manner of other-worldly creatures. She has received training whilst she sleeps from an instructor named Mary, but she is ready to graduate to a new school for gifted students such as herself called Blackstone. Fast-paced Fun

Let me get some of stuff I didn’t like out of the way. At times I felt there were a lot of disparate threads, and elements that slightly confused me. However, these did contribute to a sense of a large, vibrant, dangerous and fascinating universe, for anyone brave enough to explore it! It feels like the book is blending sci-fi with supernatural elements, which has certainly been a winner for me in the past, and I found myself hoping for Eliza to have victories in the course of her adventures.

All in all, it will be fascinating to see where this story goes!

This is like if Starship Troopers focused more on the heroine and was a bit more realistic. I say that as an utter compliment! This was a fun, entertaining read. The heroine is fabulous and the book is well-written. It's a coming-of-age story that leads us to ask about what the cost of life is as these teens grapple with their own reality. Overall, a great read for younger readers and older. It broke up my day a bit and got me out of a lull.
