On the Isle of Kazola, peace has always been protected by The Onyx Guard, an elite force of genetically modified soldiers.
Kasha has lived her life in the Onyx Guard. But when she is passed over for an advancement and forced to follow the Alpha promoted in her place, she must find a way to put her anger aside and work with him.
Because their team is on the hunt for Elliot Wells, an elusive killer who has terrorized Kazola for years. And there is more to his twisted deviance that meets the eye.

This New Adult Paranormal Fantasy & Romance tale takes readers on an epic journey of found family, a swoon-worthy rivals to lovers slow burn, and a unique twist on werewolves and vampires that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
Kathryn Marie began writing at the young age of thirteen, when she was stuck in bed recovering from spinal surgery. Ever since then, she’s loved creating stories and characters for others to enjoy. When she is not at work or busy writing in her home office, Kathryn can be found spending time with her wonderful husband or friends, experimenting with new makeup techniques, or watching reruns of her many beloved TV shows.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of this wonderful read. Definitely add to your collection! I will be purchasing a copy for mine.
Let's talk character development because that sells me on a book. Kathryn Marie did a wonderful job of portraying Kasha (FMC) to the reader. You start off with the understanding that something major has happened and it has very much affected Kasha's present world (it left me with a sinking feeling as went on the journey with Kasha). It is huge and I think the author handled it beautifully. Kasha was both a strong and vulnerable character as you watch her build back after some extreme past trauma.
Nolan, Nolan, Nolan. I need more Nolan. I also need his POV. I really loved how his character was written, as an MMC that knew when to shut up and show support and when to push for more. I am really excited to see where their relationship goes in the next book.
Also, I kinda loved the paranormal urban vibe the book has. I loved the way there were factions that ran and protected the country. I also loved the addition of a serial killer mystery to investigate. I am a sucker when a book can deliver fantasy/paranormal vibes, romance, and a thriller/mystery all at once.
*I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*
4.5/5. This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, and it won’t be the last.
Captured by Chaos was a fresh, modern take on werewolves and vampires, woven into an urban fantasy world. I did struggle a bit at first getting all the terminology down since a lot was thrown out at the beginning of the book, but eventually got the hang of it.
In terms of pacing, this book has very little fluff. Pretty much everything that you read pertains somehow to the main plot, but I did find that things slowed down for me towards the middle.
The cast of characters is what really kept things interesting for me! There are so many terrific dynamics between Kasha and her colleagues, family, friends, and other connections in Kazola that make this feel like a very fleshed-out world. No one was there for convenience. Everyone played their part and kept the story moving along so well. Plus, it’s hard not to fall in love with so many of these characters!
I got to beta read this book, and it was fantastic! Kathryn Marie knows how to weave action, a swoony romance, and emotional trauma into a story you can't put down. If you love unique worlds with shifters, BA heroines, sweet heroes, and mystery, you should add this to your TBR. (Note: there may be a trigger warning due to mention of assault, but this book was written so well, I didn't find it triggering at all, personally.)
IM OBSESSED! I had the privilege of both beta and arc reading for this masterpiece and both times I was absolutely blown away. Marie has an incredible ability to write PTSD/Trauma beautifully and Kasha’s story moved me to my core.
I had the pleasure of ARC reading this book and I’m so glad I did. If you’re looking for a paranormal romance with wolf shifters and vampires, a badass FMC and another book boyfriend to add to your ever growing list of them this is one to pick up. There are some heavy moments in this book related to trauma but the author handles it beautifully. Make sure to check the trigger warnings prior to ready. Kasha is an amazing character who has gone through unimaginable trauma and heart break. Seeing her tackle all of this, admit she has problems and finally opening up to healing was an amazing journey. There is no overly explicit sexual scenes but the tension makes it all worth it. That cliffhanger has me ready for book two!
DNF at 42% I just couldn’t connect with the fmc. Maybe my expectations were too high, I love books that address mental illness and trauma but this wasn’t it for me. Also, I understand keeping suspense and keeping back details of what happened in the past but it felt like too much withholding to the point I didn’t even care to find out what happened.
CAPTURED BY CHAOS was a super interesting and unique first installment of The Kazola Chronicles. A blend of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, the story starts off with our MC Kasha being passed over for a promotion as an alpha. There’s some tension and some backstory, naturally, and Kasha doesn’t really know what to expect with the new alpha, though it is clear that her emotions can’t get in the way of doing her job because a really important, dangerous mission has just landed in their collective laps. I loved the world of shifters and vampires that author Kathryn Marie created with this story. Both are different than any I’ve read about before and I really liked that uniqueness. Also, I love the world and how the different beings coexist. The highlight for me though was definitely the characters. I adored Kasha and her strength and resiliency. She’s been put though quite a lot, she’s endured trauma, and I really loved seeing how her past has shaped her present. Bottom line — a fantastic series starter that will appeal to fans of shifter romance, rivals to lovers, slow burn romances, and urban fantasy packed with plenty of action and danger. I really enjoyed this one and I will certainly be continuing on with the series when book 2 is available.
Very confusing in the very start, I had to double check and make sure that I wasn't accidentally reading a second book. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The Grumpy FMC was a nice change from the normal grumpy/Sunshine characters. The pain was palpable throughout the book, in a good way. The way the panic attacks were written was a good representation. I also loved the way the trust issues were portrayed. The twists near the end were very nice, I didn't see them coming honestly. Very excited to read the next one.
This book absolutely destroyed me! I went through literally every emotion there is while reading this! The story was so well written and the world she created was amazing! I've never been so intrigued by a werewolf/vampire book in my life and she did it so well! The fact that Kathryn was able to have me guessing everything every page blew my mind! I couldn't put it down and I already NEED book 2!!
Kasha is an amazing badass FMC and she has went through it. I'm not gonna spoil it at all but I know exactly what it feels like to be in her shoes and Kathryn wrote it and kashas character perfectly. I don't think I've ever related to a character so much before. And Nolan...don't get me started on him. He is absolutely swoon worthy and I swear I would do anything for a man like him! So tender, badass, dedicated, and there's more but I can't think of anything but yes please!
There really isn't a lot spice in this book but the moments that happen are just as good as if it was filled with it! The buildup to those scenes are amazing and leave you wanting so much more!
Now there are some triggers that could be a problem for some people. There are mentions of sexual assault/r word as well as spousal deaths. There is violence as well as parts about suicide so please take the warnings!
Now if you aren't one to be triggered by anything make sure to get this book on release day because you will NOT be disappointed!!
Tiktok influenced me to buy and read this book. I’m glad I did. At first, I had a little trouble wrapping my head around the world and it’s intricacies. But then, it started to make sense. Kasha is a shifter and serves as a guard and policewoman of sorts. She and her co-workers are guarding a secret of rebellion against their original alpha. Kasha is furious when she finds out she has not been promoted to Alpha and a stranger is the new alpha. As she works through that, a serial killer enters the scene. Kasha also is working through great trauma. So, it’s a lot. I liked the bonds between Kasha and her co-workers. At times it Kasha’s actions and trauma were repetitive, but that felt true to life. Bottom line, I am excited for the sequel, coming Fall 2023. I think it was a good book. The world-building was interesting. The author took tropes and made them her own. The twist was one I did not expect. And I want to continue reading the series. Looking forward to more from this author.
This plot was ridiculous, and the writing was awkward. Save yourself!
I texted a friend “I just want the plot to actually plot.”
FMC actually says “you will not get away with this” so cue eye roll.
“Everything was heavy. My mind, my muscles, my entire self.”
“A noise gained on us, closing in around whatever disgusting place they had taken me. My skin prickled as I used all my strength to focus on what I thought I was hearing. Finally, I confirmed exactly what it was: footsteps.”
First and foremost, I want to clarify that this review is unbiased and honest. I would like to express my gratitude to author Kathryn for providing me with an ARC for review.
The story takes place in the fictional country of Kazola, where non-human species known as Shrivikas and Varg Anwyns reside. The narrative revolves around solving a murder mystery involving a serial killer, while our female protagonist Kasha battles her own anxiety and past traumas. When she learns that she won't be promoted as an Alpha and a new Alpha named Nolan is appointed in her place, she develops an instant dislike for him without any valid reason. However, as they team up to investigate the case alongside their team, Kasha starts to uncover more about Nolan, including his close friendship with her brother Ollie. Gradually, she realizes that she has been unfair to Nolan, as he has always treated her with kindness. As they delve deeper into their relationship, Kasha opens up about her own secrets from the past, and their bond strengthens, eventually leading to romantic feelings.
One aspect I appreciated about this book was the author's writing style, which was engaging and easy to follow. The portrayal of Kasha's anxiety and panic situations resonated with me on an emotional level. The pacing of the story was well-balanced, and the revelation of the murderer at the end came as a shocking surprise. The character development was well-executed, and the story didn't feel dragged out. I am eagerly looking forward to witnessing the further development of Nolan and Kasha's relationship, and I'm genuinely excited to read the second book, given the well-crafted cliffhanger that left me eager for more.
Overall, "Captured by Chaos" was an enjoyable read with its captivating writing style, compelling characters, and an intriguing murder mystery. I can't wait to continue the series and explore the next installment.
Intricate mysteries, deep secrets, lost pieces of a puzzle that seems almost impossible to resolve. This is what the Faction of Seathra holds for us, triggering our minds to analyze, calculate, and ponder even the grittiest of details, for nothing is to be regarded null in a crime scene.
I loved every single aspect of this book. The air of mystery. The evolvement of the relationship between Kasha and Nolan — oh, i adore Nolan! The one perplexing case occupying the Hierarchy's time and effort. Every single bit of it was sheer perfection that it left no room for boredom at the slightest.
The character development felt so realistic, especially Kasha's. The way the trauma cast upon her by her past is portrayed feels so meticulous that it was so obvious it's being narrated by someone who had experienced these sore emotions firsthand or is some psychologist to master such precision.
The twists got me gasping, and looking back at every single event that has taken place, it all seemed to make perfect sense when combined. All pieces fit perfectly. There's a detective lurking deep inside the author, that I can tell for sure.
I just wish the ending was more satisfying. With the whole plot being flawless, I felt a desperation to reach an actual end, and though I'm aware this is the first book in a series, I just felt the cliffhanger was too much of a cliffhanger, if you get what i mean. I would've also admired more depth on the concept of telepathy; how do they specify the person they want to communicate their thoughts with?
A fascinating read, a depiction of the power lying within overcoming one's tragic past, not letting it define you but rather guide you. Can't wait for the sequel!
Kasha’s whole life is the Onyx Guard, a group of genetically modified soldiers protecting the people of Kazola, but when it comes time to pick a new Alpha she gets overlooked for an outsider. She doesn’t have time to stew over the High Faction’s decision though because there is a serial killer leaving a trail of bodies all over the Isle.. Kasha is forced to set aside her anger and work with her new leader, while simultaneously trying to heal from past trauma.
This book gives: -paranormal urban fantasy -reverse grump/sunshine -rivals to lovers -slow burn -mental health rep -strong FMC -found family -thriller/mystery
It took me a little while to get into this book but once I did, I really enjoyed it. There were so many great aspects to this story.
The mental health representation is done really well in this book. The main character, Kasha, experienced a very traumatic event in the not so distant past and the pain is still so fresh in her mind. We are taken along for the ride as she fights to heal and move forward and it was incredibly moving to read.
The faction that Kasha works in felt more like a family unit than a workplace. I loved how much they supported her and had her back when the new guy shows up.
I’m a big fan of true crime shows so I loved the crime solving/hunting a killer part of the story. The mystery and plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing and flipping the pages.
Probably my favorite part of the whole book was the relationship between Kasha and Nolan. Even though it starts out hostile, on Kasha’s part mostly, it quickly transforms into something supportive, patient and understanding. It’s probably the healthiest romantic relationship I’ve ever read in a book. Nolan is the absolute elite book boyfriend. He is super supportive but also not afraid to set boundaries. Kasha has moments of weakness that he could have easily taken advantage of but he doesn’t and I absolutely adore him for it.
If you like paranormal fantasy, urban fantasy, crime solving thrillers, strong female characters, and/or any of the other tropes mentioned above I highly suggest you check out this book!
Holy Goddess. This book. I had no idea that I needed this book especially right now. It literally was the PERFECT read for what I have been going through lately. I truly felt Kasha's pain and the therapy sessions were so well-done. I haven't read many stories where there is therapy FRONT and CENTER (apart from The Starchaser Saga and Shatter Girl) and this one...PERFECTION!
Nolan. Oh my Goddess, Nolan. I simply just love. That is all. There is nothing more to say. Well, there is a lot more to say but do I dare spoil it? I mean, I could...👀 He comes into the Faction completely UNAWARE of what's happened and yet he treats everyone so nice despite their unwillingness to trust him (granted they did have a terrible alpha before, so makes sense.) But I loved THAT moment when it finally became clear he did not know and that he was GENUINELY trying to get along with everyone. I mean, they are a pack; which is basically another family so it makes sense he would want to get to know everyone!
The whole time he is literally trying to win everyone over. To prove to them that he is NOT like their previous alpha (without even really knowing the full details) and when Kasha decides to trust him with the knowledge...MY GODDESS, HIS REACTION🥹🥰 JUST PURE CHEF'S KISS!
The worldbuilding. The characters. The Murder Mystery Plot. Everything about this story was ABSOLUTELY amazing. This right here is why I love werewolf stories. This one beats every werewolf book I have ever read (which is a lot by the way). It is so uniquely different and perfect.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This story follows Kasha the Beta of her Faction of the Onyx Guard, the ones who maintain the peace in their country. Their Alpha recently left and instead of Kasha becoming the next Alpha, they recruit a new Alpha outside of their faction called Nolan. While trying to get used to this new Alpha, a criminal is running rampant murdering people within their area who has been going from Faction to Faction and has yet to be caught. Thus, Kasha and her team, along with the new Alpha have to stop him before he moves to another Faction.
This book was just oh so good! I love a good mystery, and I enjoy listening to true crime, and so when I started this and realized not only is this a beautiful blend of urban fantasy, but it’s also a mystery! I figured it out pretty quick from the get go, but there’s so much more going on!
The romance, the ROMANCE is so sweet and adorable, a rivals to friends to lovers slow burn romance. Kathryn knows how to write a sweet cinnamon roll male character and Nolan is just oh so sweet! I adore him and need to find my own Nolan! The way he encourages and pushes Kasha to be her best, rather than coddle her, and helps her through fighting her personal demons is so sweet.
Kasha is also a great character! She’s such a strong and yet vulnerable character after what she’s been through. She’s smart, at times sassy, and relatable.
I changed my rating to 4.5 ⭐️ because I REALLLY love this book, but I just got frustrated when it seemed everyone just coddled Kasha all the time. I know she went through something horrible! But Nolan seemed to know how to have balance between making sure she’s okay and then pushing her to get out behind the wall she’s built, which is why I love him so much!
I’ve been really enjoying fantasies that have elements of mystery or true crime in them! It’s such a great blend and if done well, works really well!
I highly recommend this one! I received a gifted copy from the author(thank you so much Kathryn!). All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.75 Stars As member of the Onyx Guard, Kasha is a group of genetically modified soldiers who police their lands. Part wereeolf and part vampire, they are feared and revered wheerever they go. Growing up with her father and brothers in the guard, Kasha works her way up the ranks to become beta to the alpha of their local guard. When she is passed over for an advancement, she is forced to work with the new alpha and through her trauma, hurt and anger over the past year. Little does she know that the guard will be called to investigate a serial killer who is all but impossible to trace making her work closely with her fellow guard and their new alpha.
This was a very different and unique take on vampires and werewolves and the politics that all have to endure. Kasha has been through a great deal of trauma and suffers from PTSD but she is bolstered by her fellow Guard members who are unconditionally loyal and supportive of her. There are twists and turns that are very unexpected and maybe one or two that you may or may not see coming. But it was a really captivating read.
The romance was a reverse grumpy/sunshine and a slow burn. Noah, the MMC and new alpha, is fiercely protective of his guard members and smart enough to know when to push or back off. There isn’t any spice but there is quite a bit of tension and a sweet and healthy relationship blossoming into something more.
I really liked this one! I'm not normally a huge fan of books revolving around mysteries, but this one was a sure exception. Because I loved it!
My favorite thing about Captured By Chaos was definitely the characters. Although the insta-love between Kasha and Nolan did bug me a bit at the beginning, the actual relationship was so slowburn that I grew to love it. I can't wait to see how it further evolves in book 2.
I also can't wait to spend more time with Kasha. I loved her as a character. She was wickedly smart, proving to me just how useless I would be in a criminal investigation. Watching her open up to Vanessa throughout the book was touching, I loved seeing the normalization of therapy in a book.
My one problem with this one would have to be that it wasn't long enough. We were just getting somewhere with the mystery, what do you mean it's over now??? I want Book 2 now!!
Thanks to Sapphire Ink Press for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
I received an eARC of this book and I really enjoyed it - I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
Kasha is a kickass, tough as nails woman who isn’t afraid to trust her closest friends and feel her feelings. Nolan is a cinnamon roll MC - from the first moment I knew he was going to be my favorite.
The whole secret that Kas keeps from the past year got a little under my skin about halfway through the book, it was a central part of the story but it was always just teased instead of even hints being dropped. It got a little frustrating. HOWEVER, while there were some plot holes and having to plod through many of the same scenarios repeatedly, this story has so much potential and Kathryn does a great job of setting it up.
The murder mystery portion was interesting and kept the twists coming, I’m interested to see how that investigation and the threats evolve in the next book.
Kas & Nolan’s relationship is extreeeemmmeeellllyyy slow burn, but oh so sweet. Hopefully it will pick up momentum in book two.
Many thanks to Kathryn Marie for the eARC - it was fun & I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I really enjoyed this book, I binge-read it after putting it off for a couple of days because I didn't have the motivation but once I started reading it I couldn't stop, I'm pretty sure I haven't even gotten up for a bathroom break, this book just sucks you in, I loved how Kasha slowly but surely got better, she's still not there but I believe that she will, I enjoyed reading all the advice both her therapist and Nolan gave her, reading mental health rep in books make me feel seen and I loved her friendship with her team and Ollie, it was cute and realistic at the same time, I'm not sure about Caleb if he doesn't have a good reason and doesn't grovel forever, I'm never gonna forgive him, I wanted to murder him, like how can you choose your friend's side instead of your sister's, where the fuck is the loyalty in family and trust. Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens in book 2, hope they can catch that psycho and reveal what he meant because I'm dying of curiosity.
This is like if true crime and fantasy had a baby. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book. The description of how the fmc was experiencing/ living with her trauma was so spot on that I could relate in ways I never have with a book before. The factions found family was an amazing dynamic and banter was on point. FMC’s setbacks, triumphs, plot twists in this story line were so based in reality but with the addition of for lack of better terms werewolf’s- varg anwyn, vampires - shrivika, and ibrudowyn - super soldiers. Such an interesting world and system in this book. I love how it wasn’t just a one plot lined book, there’s romance, true crime, not a sense of ‘let me fix you’ but a sense of I will support you while you heal yourself, family drama, found family, grumpy sunshine, slow burn, enemy to lovers, and how they touched on not just the fmc dynamics but those around hers. I can’t wait to read the next book. Also f Logan.
This book was an unexpected delight that I read in one day! Captured by Chaos is a romantic paranormal fantasy with a “catch the killer” spin. I really enjoyed all the different aspects of the story … the criminal investigations, the trauma recovery, the tension with authority/family, and the respectful romance … they all kept me turning pages, eager for more of Kasha and her journey.
The heavier elements in the book didn’t overwhelm me and I felt they were handled very well. There was a hopeful undertone to the overall story that made it easy to read, even with some heavier themes. (Do mind the content warnings conveniently listed at the front of the book, though!)
I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series!
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Set in a fantasy world with werewolves and vampires, Kathryn has made them unique and different. Kasha is an amazingly strong FMC that's dealing with some trauma and family issues. I loved the mental health rep! It's written so well and it feels authentic to the character!
Nolan is our dreamboat MMC and he's total book boyfriend material! Their banter is perfection and that slow burn!!
The side characters are great! And I love this found family Kasha has!! They're funny, supportive, and loyal!!
Also, they're chasing down a serial killer which adds this thriller mystery aspect! This keeps you on the edge of your seat!! Kathryn's writing is fantastic and just sucks you into the story! I couldn't put this one down and read it in a day!! I'm so excited for Book 2!!!
A wonderful enemies to lover fantasy with a dark mystery brewing underneath.
This was a really great read. I enjoyed every second of it and am honored to have been an ARC reader. Thank you.
The build up of the relationship is a fun time. You see it coming from the beginning, but that just makes it more satisfying when it happens. What I loved most, though, was the traumatic backstory of the main character, Kasha. It's deep, it's personal, and the author did an amazing job handling such a sensitive topic.
The twist ending was a little disappointing for me. I felt betrayed, but not in a way that I also felt blown away. I think the author could have sprinkled a few more hints through the book, and then maybe it wouldn't have taken me so off guard.
Otherwise, definitely a good read. I would highly recommend it to friends.
I picked up this book at Boston Fan expo because it sounded interesting and I really enjoyed speaking with the author at her booth. I am SO glad I did. I’m relatively new to reading this genre but this book checked so many boxes I can hardly wait for book 2. Every word and moment of world building was intentional and purposeful. It made the enjoyment of the story as a whole even better. The character development was incredible. At no point did it seemed rushed or used only to push the plot along. A beautiful and intriguing story. I’ve already pre-ordered the next book and I’m thrilled that stumbling upon this booth at Fan Expo gave the opportunity to dive into the world of Kazola.
What a wonderful read. There is a little bit of everything in this glacial burn shifter romance. A murderer on the loose, betrayal, deception, team family dynamics, cast of wonderful side characters, an element of mystery. It’s so hard to write female leads with PTSD that still have that strength of character about them and I think the author navigated that so well. I did feel like I was missing the first book through most of the first half so that was a small drawback, but I really didn’t want to put it down Kasha & Nolan are fire. Pacing and writing were on point for me. I highly recommend
I really enjoyed this book. The main character, Kasha, was easy to relate to and like. her growth throughout the story was visible and I found I had become emotionally connected to her by the end of the book. The rest of the characters were great as well and I loved seeing how Kasha interacted and developed relationships with each one. The pacing was good for me, fast and always with something happening. The world was unique and I found myself able to become fully immersed within it. I would definitely recommend this book for lovers of urban, paranormal fantasy.
