2023 San Francisco Book Festival WINNER - Science Fiction

"Prepare to be swept away with this riveting, character-driven sci-fi thriller. This exceptional and one-of-a-kind, sci-fi journey is a must-read for anyone seeking a thrilling and meaningful story, as it is truly–like many reviewers have said–a 'page-turner.'" (Amazon Reviewer)

Everyone remembers exactly where they were, the day the ships came.

What no one knew back then, though, was that there were people who were already expecting them.

Scottish psychologist Elspeth McGann thinks her patient Lester Rains-a suave, enigmatic man who claims to be have been alive for 2,000 years and to be part of a team of extraterrestrial 'farmers' waiting on Earth for an alien harvest-is a delusional schizophrenic. But when vast ships suddenly appear over Moscow and vacuum up 50,000 people in a matter of hours, she realizes she must track down the elusive Rains. In her search, she stumbles upon a group who are already trying to track down the farmers. This band of renegades is led by Cassius C. Trenton, a former NSA analyst who has been on the run since he broke the code on a mystery transmission beamed into space from Earth years ago, and which bore a single, chilling Ripe.

With the aliens set to return, and some world leaders complicit in their plans, Elspeth and Trenton must seek out Rains and find a way of escaping the impending apocalypse, a hunt that takes them from Edinburgh to the White House, only to discover the harvest is just the beginning.

I have always been fascinated by what you might call the pathology of ideas -- how they mutate as different societies inherit, steal or are infected by foreign concepts, customs and gods. How a Disney character can become an icon of Islamist martyrdom, how we invent gods because we are afraid of dying, then end up dying for these invented gods. Having seen at first hand, and all too often, the most extreme results of these ever-warping ideas, I sat down and tried to write about them in "Spiders of Allah," the result of seven years covering conflict across the Middle East. Because the history of the region stretches back so far, the ideas that have come out of it have had millennia to warp and twist. You can see front lines that date back thousands of years, and which are still being fought over, affecting people's lives around the world. And what really fascinated me was, what if many of these central ideas are not only absurd, but extremely dangerous?

After Spiders was published, I covered the Arab Spring, and for a while there on Tahrir Square and Benghazi, I was hopeful the rational might sweep away the power of the supernatural. Unfortunately, the subsequent chaos in the region has shown the abiding power of religious division, sectarianism and the deep-seated power of hatred and fear.

Fun, fast read.

Lots packed into this. Over the course of reading it, I gave a brief overview to three different people, all who said I convinced them to check it out. Anne Rice meets Jason Bourne meets Prometheus. Very enjoyable.

I just can't with the slow pace of this novel. DNF at 15%, because I'm bored, by the MC, by the plot, by most of all the glacial pace of the plot. Maybe this appeals more to people newer to science fiction, I don't know. It's just not working for me.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Quite a mind blowing book! With the aliens already here, humans are ripe for the picking, being used in many unpleasant ways. Well written and fast paced.

Should have DNF'd

Ripe started out with an intriguing plot, one that seemed to promise exploration into Science Fiction territories not usually travelled. Aside from the plethora of grammatical errors, the writing is truly awful.

I am reminded of certain stages in my youth when getting high and going to comedy movies was the height of hilarity. And as an adult, viewing the same movie, finding no humor at all.

This book is written by someone on drugs for people on drugs who will never see it sober. I should have DNF'd it halfway through.

Well I can see why this book is polarizing. I thought it was well written though sometimes complicated enough to be a bit hard to follow. The first half kept me very involved and moved quickly. The second half is where I think some readers were bogged down. It still worked for me but I did think the ending came somewhat abruptly, enough that I thought it might turn out to be the first I a series. Either way I did enjoy reading this so take what you will.

This book had such a unique storyline. One I had never read before, in science fiction reads. it was clever, and meticulously thoughtout and detailed. The only negative was I didn't feel that extreme detail carried through to the end. The only solution was to have a sequel book.

I absolutely loved the plot but the author lacks mileage to wrap up the story perfectly. All in all I enjoyed reading this book and that's what counts.

There have been other concepts about aliens harvesting humans. "Jupiter Ascending" has that concept and some of the same themes.
"Ripe" begins with 40,000 people being taken away from Moscow by alien ships. The author begins to unfold a complicated relationship among the "farmers" and humans and others. It seems the approach of the book attempts to be a mystery story rather than science fiction. But the devices the author uses to reveal the mystery are formulaic and frustrating for the reader.
The anticipation is the world-wide harvest approaching soon, but first we must live through Apocalypse Now where the characters must hold up in a secure house but can move freely through the city. They are hunted but can show up freely at the White House.
The post-harvest story descends into confusion, character degeneration, and attempts to conclude in a shoot-out. The victory is secured by the semi-allied farmer by the surprise intervention that he was secretly planning that just happens at the right time.
Like Jupiter Ascending the alien world is a caricature that descends into irrationality. The book has an unsatisfying ending that seemingly promises the answers in the next episode.
Usually books I finish I give a 3 because they kept me till the end, but I gave a 2 star because thae average for the book is over 4, and it doesn't merit more than a 4.

This was a neat twist on the age-old tale of hungry aliens coming to gobble us up. Really enjoyed the story and was impressed by the author's imagination and writing. I particularly enjoyed the "sleeper" agents scattered through history, had a kind of Highlander feel about it.. Terrific sci-fi thrills and chills.

I would class this as horror sci-fi, a genre which focuses on dangerous possibilities and especially monsters from outer space. It's not one that I usually read, but this book had some other interesting (though very unrealistic) ideas so I decided to give it a try. I was put off by the monsters and the general dark tone of the book, but the plot was pretty suspenseful, and the characters were moderately appealing and realistic. The cliffhanger ending pissed me off, but if the next book in the series is available I might read it.

This was a wildly fun book with a different twist on “first contact.” With a good balance of humor and terror, Ripe has written a book you can’t put down or can’t stop thinking about. Fun characters full of personality, doubts and attitude leading them all to be a group of misfit heroes. There’s a sequel and I can’t wait for it to come out!!!!

im not a huge aliens fan in books as sci fi is not my go to to read but this wasn't a horrible read. I was really drawn in for the first 85% ish of the book but I must say that that ending was kinda bleh. like it wrapped up too well and too quick.

This was an enjoyable sci-fi alien read. I enjoyed the hidden alien story as well as the end of times invasion that occurs. Once I hit somewhere around 20% I did not want to put it down. Very enjoyable and fast paced. The descriptions of a human's desire to believe and hope for more despite some pretty red flags is quite interesting too.

Between the title and premise, it sounded really silly. But it’s so well written that Hider pulls it off and I was sucked in from page 1. It might drag a bit after the ‘main’ event but honestly I was just happy to have more of the characters and world I didn’t mind. It’s a really fun book and I hope there’s a sequel down the road.

It was 'alright' I guess
Turned into a bonkers episode of doctor who towards the end and I loved it for that.
Suffered from bad editing, unnecessary characters being introduced and FFS Dale! don't go with them Dale you idiot!

Ending felt like a poorly timed cliff hanger double episode
*sings the doctor who theme tune*

Clearly, the time is ripe for such a fantastic sci-fi book honed with political satire. After the Spiders of Allah and Cronix, I didn’t quite know what to expect from James Hider. This was superb! Ripe is set in modern Edinburgh and Washington DC and Moscow plus rural Virginia and France, and the time frame goes from pre-Roman times to a not-so-distant future. That’s when the alien Maut overlords are due to show up and harvest volunteer humans in order to bio-tweak their artificial intel. Weird hierarchies abound. Turns out, some aliens were already here! Human and supra-humans interact in a scarily convincing way, both in the flesh and online. We follow a psychiatrist, her patient, a newspaper reporter and small town editor, military vets, a trucker, and politicians of all stripes just as the end of times for Earthlings becomes overdue ---well, everywhere except a possible sanctuary in Hawaii. By the time half of Earth’s urban population disappears, the chaos is inescapable. Hider describes it well:
"Not only was military discipline shot, but civilization itself was gone, collapsed not with a bang or a whimper, but with a president of the United States getting French-kissed by some extraterrestrial bug. " To avoid spoilers, I will say no more. You'll be grabbed by this tale.

Kindle Unlimited always gets me with these books that need an editor! This story was super interesting in theory, but stupid errors, inconsistencies, and overall poor writing ruined it.

Decent book

It was well written at a slightly fast pace. I did enjoy the idea of harvest and all. The idea of who the alien is and the reason behind the mission isn’t common. Plus, the chase of the idea of survival intrigues me with the mystery behind it. While 300ish pages isn’t enough…I think the author could push it more to 500 at least to stretch the horrors. Also, the author got it right with two characters' POV in parallel throughout the story. Unlike many other books where there are too many characters with endless dead-end subplots.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital ARC!

Okay, so I'm very late to finally reviewing this. It's very late; my bad.

I actually thought this was going to be more horror than it was, and I kind of wish it was a horror. The premise would make a great horror, and I'd love to see this turned into one.

The plot of this overall starts pretty well - spaceships turn up over Moscow and suck up the population before disappearing. Obviously, the world is freaked out, and everyone wonders what's going on. No one knew this would happen, but a Scottish psychologist is suddenly reminded of the client she'd seen previously. He'd given her a whole story about how he was centuries old and was created to monitor the human population for the aliens. He then tells her that they're coming and warns her. Obviously, she doesn't believe this given her work, but now suddenly she's given proof that it was all true and she wants to find him.

My main issue is that this all starts pretty tense and interesting - the set-up is great, and Rains (the strange man) is interesting. But then it doesn't really do much after this in terms of the pacing - if anything, I kind of lost interest. I didn't hate it, though the ending was a bit of a wet fish to me, but I also didn't love it. I'd love to see this author dive headfirst into the horror world, as I can see some great potential here for the future!

In general:
Ripe by James Hider is a gripping, fast-paced sci-fi thriller that blends apocalyptic alien invasion, artificial intelligence, and ancient immortals with unsettling realism. Tense, creepy scenes and believable characters keep the pages turning, while the clever use of real-world references makes the story hit close to home. The concept—aliens possibly "hacking" our world—feels disturbingly plausible in the age of AI. Unique among alien invasion tales, the story is thrilling, thought-provoking, and full of twists you won’t see coming. Though the ending is abrupt, it leaves you craving more. This is one sci-fi story that might not be fiction for long.

Don't quit too quickly:
It started great. Then slowed down for me and I almost put it down at about 20-25% into it. I am glad I did not. The story was great! And Original! So keep reading.

The abrupt ending:
I had to think about this for a while. The story arc of this book was completed. However, the final actions of the book set you up for the next book, making it feel like the story was not complete. But I am glad I read it, it was well worth the read, and as I said, no storylines were left hanging.

Overall:
It was something different. It was excellent. Strongly recommend it.

Ripe is based on the premise that aliens have decided humans are ripe for harvesting. They are taking people by the thousands, but that is only the beginning. We follow a psychiatrist, her patient claiming to have been alive for over 2000 years, a newspaper reporter, and more on their quest to stop the terrifying events that are unfolding globally.

Ripe was a good book, not my favorite, but good. Honestly, it just wasn't for me. I felt the plot dragged in spots and I had trouble with suspending my disbelief. However, if you are an avid lover of sci-fi, aliens, and global catastrophe, this may be the book for you! The writing was good and once the book got going, it was fairly interesting. Overall, it just didn't work for me and my interests but I feel it could be a knockout for those more immersed in the genre.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all views expressed are my own.

Awesome sci fi

An alien AI fleet has been sent to collect the people of Earth. While some are willing to take a trip on a spaceship, others are sceptical of the reception once inside. A team of human looking creatures, sent to Earth thousands of years ago, are the Farmers, whose job it is to get the human race ripe for cultivation. Long story in between, but a really well written and thought out one gets you from beginning to end in an exciting fight for survival.
I will say this, though. I hated the ending. I hope there is a sequel., because the book just sort of stops. I was honestly shocked when I got to the last page and saw The End. I see no second book by the author continuing the story, nor a NY inkling there is more to come. This book was a solid 5 stars up until the last two words. I seriously wanted to drop it to 2 because of the dissatisfaction. However, it is, like I said, well written and thought out, so 4 stars for that.

A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:

This is a great first-contact story that goes off the rails and falls into crazyland by the end. But it's fun the whole way!

The book is divided into "parts", switching between two characters' point of view. All the main characters have had some supposed interaction/sighting with aliens/ufos which take on a whole new meaning when, one day, 50,000 Russians are sucked up into spaceships. So, naturally, there's a bunch of scrambling to try to figure it out as society collapses around them.

For the first half, the story seems almost reasonable. But then, why stop at one alien species? And before you know it, it's like a scene out of Idiocracy, but with an alien queen instead of Terry Crews.

But the ending... bleh. Sure, it leaves it open for another book, but it was a few chapters short of being satisfying. I don't need all the loose ends tied up, but surely one or two? But still...

Read it!

I have a complaint.
Can ALL authors ( particularly male authors) please stop saying things like 'She wasn't in bad shape, considering she was pushing 40. The line in this book went something like that and I almost quit reading because it pissed me off. For anyone interested, 40 plus is when women truly come alive and we feel our very best, we do not decline, quite the opposite actually. It would be nice if authors had it right for once.
Mr James Hider lost a star for that.
Anyhow, I loved the book. I loved the writing and I absolutely adored the plot. I liked that we were the ones being farmed. It would teach us a lesson. I wish this was a movie or series and I'll definitely be reading more from the author. Brilliant science fiction and I didn't find it slow at all, like some have. Highly recommended.

This is one really strange book and story it borders on the really bad exposition heavy sci-fi cliches to really interesting narratives about some of the characters.

Its got it all in here like highlander, body snatches, day of the dead, independence day, close encounters, alien, aliens, etc etc so many things rammed in. Elspeth is an awful character complete fridged female just there to play dumb damsel in distress even tho she is supposed to be clever. At times it trudges really dull exposition then it abruptly concludes even killing off people in the space of a few pages having important sequnces realayed in a sentence and the ending is just......is that it?!

Weirdly ive scored it three stars as its stillgot hooks that make you come back to it and the multiple sci fi troups are tried and tested and quite fun.
