Sutten Mountain #1

Rewrite Our Story

Rate this book
Cade Jennings was always there for me when I needed him—until he wasn’t.

I’d spent my entire life loving my best friend’s older brother. Every single one of my birthday wishes was spent hoping Cade would finally notice me.

And then one day, he did.

But not all love stories have happy endings.

It's been years since I left the small town of Sutten Mountain devastated and heartbroken. I’d used the pain to fuel a bestselling novel that solidified I’d never have to return.

Until tragedy struck, forcing me to face the man who shattered my heart.

I thought I’d be strong enough to see him again. I didn’t expect the angry, broken man staring back at me.

But the more time we spend around each other, the more I see glimpses of the man I fell in love with. His touch still owns me. His kiss still brands me. And even after all this time, the feelings I have for him still consume me.

Cade and I are unfinished business, and this time, he’s not letting me leave until we rewrite our story .

From the author of Black Ties and White Lies comes an all new series of complete standalones set in Sutten Mountain. Rewrite Our Story, the first book in the series, is a steamy, second chance, best friend's brother romance.

Idk how this books has SUCH high ratings. Y’all didn’t want to punch Cade Jennings every time he spoke?

It’s been a loooong time since a character has so totally and completely ruined a book for me, but this asshole managed it. All he did was verbally berate Mare and gaslight her, for the ENTIRE book. And the only time he said anything positive about her (up to where I read, at least) is when they’re having sex. Outside of that he’s all but calling her a selfish bitch the entire book

The entire conflict is based on Mare leaving their home town years ago after Cade broke up with her and never coming back. Cade reminds Mare - CONSTANTLY - that she abandoned them and basically calls her a piece of shit on multiple occasions for leaving him. He literally SAYS TO HER FACE that she should’ve known he was in love with her and not left.

This is, of course, FUCKING INSANE considering the day she left he looked her in the eye and repeated multiple times that he didn’t love her and that their relationship meant nothing to him, despite her quite literally BEGGING him to say he loved her. So, he’s saying she should’ve known he loved her despite him saying the exact opposite? She was 19 and and had never been in another relationship, how, exactly, was she supposed to figure this out? And he wasn’t willing to fight for them but SHE was supposed to? Bro you told her “I’m giving up on this relationship” and then got pissed when she said “ok me too then”

That’s not me exaggerating either. When you read the chapter where she leaves, he makes it very clear in his inner narration that he was going to say literally anything to get her to go. And then, of course, as soon as she’s walking away he’s all “if only she’d turn around!” Real convenient, huh?

Side note - he claims that he wants her to go so she can find success as an author, but not once in the nearly 300 pages I read did he even imply he had bothered to read her book, let alone compliment it. So you broke her heart for no reason, then?

The whole “if only she'd turn back” as she’s walking onto the plane is actually something Cade does a couple times. He breaks her heart at the airport and forces her to leave him, but as she’s actually leaving he goes on and on about how if she’d just turn around he’d take it all back! And then later, after they've had sex again and they’re both ready to start a new relationship, there’s a line about him being “ready to work for her forgiveness”. Cade consistently does this shit where he fucks something up, and then goes “ohh, I’d fix it if you gave me a chance!” which is like a horrible manipulation tactic. She’s supposed to believe that NOW, in the ten seconds that have passed since you broke her heart, you would… what, actually say lol nvm? Huh?????? And now, after she’s forgiven everything and said you’re good, NOW you say you’re willing to make it up to her? Really? You’re only saying you’d grovel immediately after she tells you you don’t need to grovel???? Come ON dude

Bottom line of this, for me, is that this book is 200 pages of gaslighting before they “resolve” their issues. Cade says over, and over, and over, and OVER again that it was MARE’S fault for leaving, SHE’S the one who never came back, SHE’S selfish, SHE should’ve known he was in love with her. The reality is that he *told* her those things. CADE said he didn’t love her, HE told her to leave town, HE’S the one who then treated her like she was literally evil after she just… did what he asked.

And I think the real worst part, the thing that made this book a DNF for me, is that Mare LETS HIM. Every time (and it’s *many* times) Cade says “YOU LEFT” she says “you told me to” MAYBE once, and that’s if she says it at all. He’s constantly gaslighting her and they’re just too busy having sex - sorry, “remembering their undeniable physical connection” - for her to call him out on his bullshit

My biggest regret is not DNFing this book.
The book had me for the first 10%, not gonna lie. I liked the prologue (I CRIED), and I liked ONE scene with Cade and his mom. That’s it.

Cade is actually the worst character I’ve ever read, and Mare should’ve been running for the hills. He’s a walking red flag, and not the good kind that fictional men should be!!!

Not a single person was on Mares side when their whole situation was CADES fault! “Mare never came back to town. Cade was heartbroken when she left”
He is the one that told her to leave, and broke her heart in the process, and turned everything around on her. “Punishing” her FOR WHAT??? And I swear to god, not ONCE did he say sorry for pushing her away. Because he truly thinks it’s her fault.

This book angers me deeply and I will do my best not to think about it anymore cause it ruined my day lol

Five years after leaving for Chicago, when Cade and Pippa Jennings lose their mother, Linda, Marigold Evans returns to Sutten Mountain and Jennings Ranch.

Despite the years that have passed, the pain of their breakup is still fresh for Cade and Mare. Yet it’s clear they still love one another deeply. However, there is a lot of pain to sort through, not to mention the literal distance.

Y’all I am so mad at these two for all the years they wasted. BUT, their love is e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. I’m talking #relationshipgoals here. Their story is full of emotions. You’re going to feel the feelings, but it will be tempered with a healthy dose of angst and spice, and even a few laughs.

I’m ashamed that this was my first read by Kat, but rest assured, it won’t be the last. I’ve got my clicking finger ready for as soon as the next book in the Sutten Mountain series is up. I mean, we’ve already gotten hints for Pippa’s story and I’m about it.

I picked this book up with pretty high expectations because a bunch of people I usually vibe with the same books were rating this 5 stars. I mean, what's not to love here? Cowboys. Small town. Second chance. Either going in with expectations was my downfall, or I read a totally different book than everyone else because.. I hated this book.

First of all, let's start with probably the worst Male love interest I have ever encountered in a book, Cade Jennings.

Every time this man was on page, which is often, he sucked out all the happiness and joy out of every situation. Hear me out, I don't mind a possessive and jealous MMC sometimes.. but Cade was just unnecessarily mean and an asshole with no actual reason.

In the past timeline (this is dual timeline btw), He was constantly hot and cold with Marigold, giving her mixed messages and the whole "we can't be together because you're best friends with my sister" lines, but the second another man shows interest in her he has a complete hissy fit and makes it Marigold's problem that he is jealous and insecure.

By the time we get to the breakup scene about why Marigold left in the first place, its so much worse than I imagined it would be. He treated her like she meant nothing to him to give her a "clean break". It's a huge pet peeve of mine when men think they know what's best for the FMC even though she is telling him with her words, and showing him with her actions that it's not what she wants. YET he does it anyways because HE KNOWS BEST, and then acts SURPRISED that she actually left and didn't come back.

The present timeline is not much better. This man has the absolute audacity to try and make Marigold feel guilty for leaving, for BELIEVING HIM when he callously told her he doesn't love her, and goes as far as to imply that his mother who DIED would have liked to see her come home before she passed. He is straight up MAD that she can't read his fucking mind and "just know" the things he NEVER says out loud to her. The amount of time he said he wants to "punish" her for not coming back, when HE is the one that pushed her away for "her own good".. I cannot. istg I'm not being over dramatic, I can't make this shit up. There is a scene where he literally gets mad at her for not turning around in the airport after he dumped her, because if she turned around he would have came clean about his real feelings.

I have a lot more to hate about Cade, but let's move on to Marigold.

Honestly? Her falling first is not my cup of tea in romances. I just don't want to see a girl desperately fight for the hero to love her in romance novels. I want him to be so gone for her first that he cannot even fathom leaving her, and to fight for HER first, not for the FMC to be desperate for his attention while he gives her a million mixed signals and treats her like garbage half the time. The amount of time the FMC said "I can't say no to him" should have been illegal, like GIRL you should probably just say no.

You can't even argue that she's an unreliable narrator since we get a dual POV and we get a front row seat to all of Cade's fuck boy thoughts that string Marigold along. In the end, I feel for this girl, I don't hate her, but I like my FMC's to be a little bolder, stronger, and stand up for themselves. Marigold is just a little too meek and lets Cade walk all over here, and we don't love that.

The weirdest part of this entire book is after hating the first 85% of it, all of a sudden that last 15% is great. Cade turns into an entirely different person (despite NEVER apologizing for his behavior) and is all of sudden so gone for her and so devoted to making it work. Marigold just accepts it because she is a doormat and will say yes to anything Cade says, but they were kinda sweet in the end. Especially when they were forced to go long distance for a bit while Marigold finished up her work in Chicago. Ironic that the best part of this entire book is when they weren't even together and had to be in different states for awhile.. but that facetime smut scene was.. top notch.

Despite the last 15% being pretty good, I still can't rate this book more than one star because it only makes me angrier that the author COULD have written a really good book but chose to sewer all of the characters before we got there.

TW for death of a loved one

I am a sucker for a small town romance, and Kat Singleton delivered on everything I love from that subgenre. This was definitely an emotional read since we alternate between flashbacks after Marigold's mom died and she starts fall for Cade and the present day where Marigold is back in town after being gone for years because Cade's mom has passed away. They are there for each other and slowly start to give into the attraction that they've shared since that summer they fell in love. I really enjoyed the alternating storylines and slowly uncovering what went wrong in the past and why both Cade and Marigold are so hurt now. And can we talk about how swoony Cade was?? Obviously he's never gotten over her and we see how truly in love with her he still is. And Kat definitely delivered on the spice! I do think the spice went on a bit too long and I wanted to get back to the emotions and story, which is why this didn't get a full five star, but I still really loved their love story and how they had their second chance. Be ready for the emotions and angst! Definitely pick this one up!

This is one of the most fucked up, emotionally manipulative, immature, absolute douchecanoes of a “hero” I’ve ever read.

I would have happily punched this dude in the dick for the FMC if these were real people. Thank god they don’t exist and I can toss this book in the trash

Ps - If one more fucking romance author writes her FMC as a romance author, I’m gonna lose my shit. It’s so lazy. So fucking lazy. We don’t care. Try just a bit harder to be original

Honestly if you are looking for small town angsty spicy read where there is no third act breakup, this is the read for you!!! That being said there is miscommunication which I gobble up like nobody’s business

It felt really refreshing to read a book where there wasn’t a third act breakup , because while I enjoy that in books it’s nice to have a break and read something different than that!

What is about bookish men named Cade that could literally have me melting like an ice cream cone in direct sunlight. Like Cade had such a dirty mouth , excuse me sir , I was blushinggg and giggling with the things he would say to mare. But also the way mare was like nope I’m not putting up with any crap. I was so here for how to the point she was. I really enjoyed the characters and their story, getting to see their past and present was perfection, I honestly found myself loving the past a bit more because I got to see mare and cade originally connect!

Overall a really enjoyable and first time experience read by Kat and I look forward to reading more by her!

easily convincing you this is the best second chance small town romance in a few things cade jennings did for marigold evans even though they broke each others hearts and havent spoken in years/didnt think they’d ever speak again:

1) built her dream house they spoke about when they were younger, and planted a field marigolds every year
2) kept a picture of her in his favorite hat that he wore every single day
3) got a tattoo of a marigold to keep her close to him forever

CADE JENNINGS THE FUCKING MAN THAT YOU ARE. this book was so unbelievably beautiful wow

this book made me cry like 50 billion times so make sure you have tissues or the sleeve of your favorite hoodie ready to collect your tears and snot 🤗

This has such great ratings among my friends and I love the cover. I was excited to read it. Honestly, I was not a fan of the hero and towards the end, there was too much steam and I ended up skimming/fast-forwarding a ton. It wasn’t bad, just not for me.

are you in need of a small town romance with a second chance, plenty of spice, and everything nice? Rewrite Our Story is such a memorable read, I’m looking at you Cade 😏

Marigold goes back home for the funeral of her best friend’s mom, where she reconnects with her bestie’s older brother, a love that broke her heart. Cade and Marigold push & pull at their connection, causing tension, vulnerable moments, and all the spicy moments.

I read Rewrite Our Story in 2 days, I could not put it down, it was not only a page turner, but it made me feel all the emotions. The characters were brought to life & I loved every single one. Highly recommend this book for your next small town romance read.

The only reason I’m giving it 4/5 stars is because I wish we got a little less spice (I know I know I can’t believe I’m saying this) but I think more intimate, like talking, dates, etc. moments instead of the spice would have amplified this story. But overall, I really really enjoyed myself with this one.

There’s just something about a cowboy named Cade.

This was good, not great, but good. It gave me what I wanted: a cute small-town romance. Nothing groundbreaking, but sometimes that’s enough.

I usually hate flashbacks, and there were a lot here, but surprisingly they didn’t bother me too much, so that was a win. What did bug me was how much she liked him right away. I get why he did what he did, but I couldn’t shake the feeling he only made those choices because he knew she was already head over heels. Like… why couldn’t he just communicate when she brought it up?

That said, they were still cute together. The house thing? Very thoughtful. And I loved how sweet he always was with her. His mom, though absolute MVP. That woman was dead and still carrying. Icon.

Overall, nothing particularly notable, but a light, easy, enjoyable read.

Edit: Lu reply to my comment and she told me that it was implied that he was celibate. And for once she WASNT.
h slept with more than one apparently. The last hook up was with a doctor. Good for her. Especially bc he was the one that broke her heart telling her that he wasn’t in love with her. She was heartbroken.

I skimmed through the book and I know h isn’t celibate. But I’m not sure if he is. He mentions that he has been only using his hands for way too long. So, probably he is. Can you tell me if you have read the book?
H has a gf that h is aware of before they start dating and way before the separation. H was the one that broke the relationship. I think he is 6-8 years younger and they start dating when she is 18-19. But he was with others before this. h was a virgin.

We are only five months into this year and I’ve just found my favourite read of 2023!!

I am convinced Kat Singleton can do it all. She’s given us hot billionaire fake fiancé’s and now she’s given us this!!

Rewrite Our Story is a Small Town, Second Chance, Best Friends Older Brother Romance, with the perfect mix of sweetness, spice, and angst.

The characters in this book were phenomenal! From the main characters Mare and Cade to the side characters, I loved them all.

Mare and Cade’s story is truly unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I seriously don’t know how anything will top this book for me, it was perfect!! If I could give it 100 stars I would!

While reading I could feel how Kat put her whole heart and soul into this book, it was beautifully written and I did cry multiple times while reading.

I love you so much Kat and I am so excited for what’s more to come from Sutten Mountain (especially a story about Pippa and a certain rich asshole).

rewrite our story had everything i love about a small town, second chance romance. throw in the best friend’s brother aspect AND the fact that he’s a hot cowboy!? what more could you ask for.

this was such a great story about two kids who had the sweetest friendship that eventually turned to more, but growing up and life changes got in the way. when a tragedy brings them together again, they never stop fighting for their happy ending. i loved cade and mare so so much 🥹 this was a fast paced, sweet and spicyyyy read. the tension, the angst, the years of longing! it was everything. already can’t wait to return to sutten mountain!

update 06/03 -- I was doing my monthly reading wrap up and I realized that this is not actually a 2 star read. New rating (yes I'm salty) 1 star | 3 on the spice scale.

original rating 05/26 -- 2 stars | 3 on the spice scale

*this review will be negative and it will most likely contain spoilers*

I thought this book was going to be IT for me. Small town second chance romance, past – present chapters, A COWBOY as the male main character, a splash of grumpy x sunshine, like some of my favorite tropes all tied up in a shiny bow. SPOILER ALERT I HATED IT. I thought about DNFing more than 5 times, but I stuck it out because it became a hate read.

There are so many things I disliked about this book. The characters, the plot, the whole issue as to why this is a second chance romance. It is written in present-past chapters, but the pacing is SO OFF. Like we go from a present chapter to a past one at the most random points, and at one point it is cause of a memory. It was just weirdly written, and it made no sense. The chapters are short though, so props to the author for that.

Let’s talk about Cade, the MMC. He’s not a grump, he’s just an asshole. The gaslighting, the hypocrisy!! Him during the past timeline? INFURIATING. Like he was angry at Marigold, the FMC, because she left for college AFTER HE PUSHED HER AWAY AND TOLD HER TO GO? BFFR. He goes to drop her off at the airport and instead of confessing his feelings he just hurts her even more and then has the audacity to think “I tell myself that if she looks back, then I’ll come clean.” DUDE WHAT THE HELL. You told her to go, you hurt her beyond words, and NOW you want HER to LOOK BACK? IT IS NOT HER RESPONSIBILITY. YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK. YOU CHOSE NOT TO TAKE IT. *yes, I am indeed irrationally angry*

Now onto him during the present timeline. Asshole, gaslighter, blames the FMC for everything, wants to “punish her” for “leaving” and “never coming back” AFTER he pushed her away. Again, BFFR.

Marigold, the poor thing didn’t know any better. She was in love with him since she was 10 years old, so she fell for everything and started thinking that maybe she deserved the way he was treating her – my girl you DON’T. What you do need is to run away and never go back. Stay in Chicago trust me you’re better off. And I also felt like she didn’t stand up enough for herself? Like honey.

Also – I do not particularly enjoy when a main character is a writer because it feels like the author is sort of inserting themselves into the book, and guess what? Marigold is a writer. And SPOILER ALERT guess what!! The name of the book she writes is REWRITE OUR STORY. BYE.

ANOTHER THING I HATED IS THE FACT THAT THE AUTHOR WROTE SO MANY SCENES OF THEM HAVING SEX WHILE THE FMC WAS A TEENAGER. Like ma’am I know she’s over legal age, but like it just felt so weird and icky?? Specially because of HOW it is written. Don’t get me wrong I love smut as much as the next girl, I just did not want to read so many scenes of them having sex while she was so young.

Now the smut scenes during the present timeline? Ooofff. Cade’s dirty talk!? Incredible (probably his only redeeming quality in my eyes HAHA) Like I’m giving this book 2 stars and one whole star is for the spice. Top tier spice in my opinion.

The ending was really cute though, and the letter Linda writes Marigold did tug at my heartstrings. I also did vibe with the author’s writing, and there’s no third act breakup so extra points for that.

ANYWAYS I’M DONE WITH MY RANTING. I do want to give this author another chance, but IDK if I will read the next book in the series.

4.75🌟.

What a poignant and beautiful story.
Even though it makes your heart weep several times throughout Marigold and Cade’s journey, it’s that kind of book which leaves an echo with you even after you turn the last page.

Let me tell you it wasn’t an easy journey, in the prologue itself my heart was broken and young Mare stole it immediately.
There were many many dreamy moments and I highlighted so many beautiful beautiful quotes. I will never look at a Marigold Flower without thinking about this book again.

I very rarely love a second chance romance because the hero always moves on sleeps with other people. But here, Cade Jennings devotion was a thing of beauty. He patiently waited for her day, months and years.

I thought I’ll never be able to pick a favourite scene in this book but the epilogue, yeah, that stole the show. I also loved the last chapter. It somehow felt right that they reach where all the heartbreak started. I know I’m being vague but I don’t wanna give even one tiny spoiler that’s why.

It took me time to connect with the book initially (up to 40%, so if you’re like me hang in, it’s worth it) maybe because this is a new to me author.
I’m also not a big fan of flashback writing because sometimes it gives me so much anxiety knowing they have already broken up and imagining all the worst scenarios.

Overall a very well written book with amazing characters and a deep abiding love.

Recommended, safe and KU.

“She’s my Goldie. The Sun. The stars fail in comparison to her but they sure do put up a fight.”

“That’s the thing about marigolds. They’re all beautiful.”

Oh man…I’m gonna need a second after that epilogue 😭 WHERE ARE THE TISSUES.

This was such a lovely story & I’m beyond ecstatic that I got the chance to read an ARC of it!

If it’s a steamy small town romance, I’m gonna read it!! That’s just how the world goes. ESPECIALLY if it’s a best friend’s older brother romance, with a dirty talking cowboy 🤤, & happens to have countless swoony moments. My heart is so full. Be prepared, you will be emotional on this ride!! This is a dual POV, with a past and present timeline! AND SHORT CHAPTERS >>

Marigold (Mare) comes back home to her small town after the death of someone very near & dear to her heart. What she wants, though, is to avoid her bestie’s older brother who she happens to have loved for almost the entirety of her life at all cost. He was there for her during the hardest time of her life, and now it’s her turn to return the favor. But now she has to do it with a broken heart. Both are grumpy & hesitant (as you would expect from a second chance romance), but walls are meant to be broken am I rightttttt?!

Two words: Tack. Room. Whewwww

Also, I am SO FREAKING PUMPED for Camden & Pippa. The build up is toooooo good, and gosh I’m such a sucker for enemies to lovers!! Bring it ON!!

Disappointed

Wasn't quite as good as the reviews. The sex scenes were uncomfortable and a little tacky and there was way too much of it. Neither were celibate while apart but they only loved each other. I was expecting more I guess from the reviews. But so much life wasted because one person made a decision for the both of them. I also didn't feel the love so much. It wasn't epic to me. Epic to me would be the one and only and no other but I know she moved on for sure and I think he did too. It sounded like it at least. Way too long separation for me. I didn't like the back and forth between the time periods and it annoyed me. Now this is an old lady's personal opinion so please understand that.

changing my rating to 3 ⭐️

now that I've had a chance to digest this book, all I really need to say is that I came to the realization that all cade (MMC) really did until about the 3/4 mark of the book was gaslight marigold (FMC) into feeling even more guilty for leaving Sutten and living out her dream than she already originally did. and the fact cade TOLD HER to leave and then was upset she never came back? please be serious.

all of this could have been handled with a little COMMUNICATION.

Saying I want you makes it seem like it’s just a choice. What I feel for you— how bad I need you— doesn’t just feel like a choice. It feels undeniable. Like fate.

4.75/5 - 3/5 🌶️

This book, Cade’s and Mare’s story was so delicately wonderful! A small town, second-chance story that was perfectly done. It had everything I could have hoped for• from atmospheric landscapes and grand romantic moments to unresolved feelings and angst. But most of all it had Cade… oh Gosh Cade! He was the most delicious, grumpy, boyfriend material, I’ve ever read in a mc. To say I am obsessed, will put it lightly.

The story was narrated beautifully in both the present and the past. As we moved on with the current timeline, moments and feelings from the past were unfolded. I feel that it was crucial to meet both versions of our mcs. Their story wasn’t easy• there were scars and bruises still lingering from the past, unable to even slightly heal. Because their love story was ever so consuming and bloomed from a young age, they had to suffer through the immaturity of their age and miscommunication. Witnessing them rewriting their story, was incredible.

I really loved Marigold. I loved her shyness, her banter, and her gentle heart. But I would drop to my knees for Cade. I freakin’ loved him. Yes, he f*cked up. But he also did the most loving, romantic things. His povs were everything. He had this grumpy, bittersweet attitude and such a filthy, addictive mouth. I adored him to bits.

Small town, best friend’s brother, second-chance, and CADE. Go read it. So good.
Can’t wait for Pippa’s story. I bet it will be explosive.

2.5⭐️ i love a cowboy romance as much as the next person, but something about this was just … off? i felt like the reason for cade being mad at marigold wasn’t really justified, and i also just didn’t really feel connected to either of them at all. i also felt like the book depended on the spicy scenes, which i just ended up skipping too bc i just didn’t really care. other than that, this book needed more editing. many sentences in the same paragraphs were just being slightly worded different, causing it to be very repetitive. the story was kind of just boring, and i found myself skimming and reading only the dialogue from about 60% and on.

i will never not eat up a small town, kinda cowboy romance book

➼ 3 stars
“I’m tired of pretending that my day doesn’t begin and end with thoughts of you,”

— the beginning was fun (given the circumstances) and the aesthetics and vibe of the book are so good and i loved it. the storyline was so good in the beginning and the way the story was set up had really good potential. it was easy to assume why the main couple broke up in the first place, from the given information and of the setup to their relationship told in both past and present timeline. i was not really a fan of why the main couple broke up, like i understood why and realistically it makes sense but like the way they talked about why she never came back until now made it sound like there was more. the last 10 chapters kinda lost me bc i was just bored. it was the same situation every chapter until cade’s dad was like “go get your girl” and “stop feeling like you owe me by being here” like yall are adults what are you doing???

— cade was a real dick at times bc the audacity he had to be BLAMING HER??? like sir she was just doing what you told her. if i were her, boy i would be yelling your head off if a man treated me the way cade treated mare at times. you can’t blame her and her feelings when you didn’t speak up about your feelings earlier. he was also kinda gaslighting her about how she was in the wrong and he didnt take any real accountability for his part until 80% in and even that was still like “oh but you never came back & i couldn’t handle it” MF YOU LOOKED HER IN THE EYE AND TOLD HER TO LEAVE WHEN SHE WAS LITERALLY FIGHTING FOR YOU TO NOT DO IT AND EVEN YOU ACKNOWLEDGED IT YOURSELF AS A LIE TF 🙅‍♀️ but i am also just a girl

— overall, this was a fun read. the storyline fell flat when you find out why the couple broke up and the spice (especially in the flashbacks) took over and then it was like this cycle of they’re in love and then they talk about how their relationship is going to work and then back again but i still had fun reading this book !

I am physically unwell after reading this book and I will be needing 5-7 business days to recover. I usually tend to stay away from extremely emotional and angsty books because I don't like feeling all the heavy emotions and feelings all at once. But I'm so glad that I picked this one up and applied for an ARC. Cade and Mare are the definition of "right person, wrong time". They're the definition of soulmates. Normally, I don't have the patience to read a book that alternately flips between the past and present. But in Rewrite Our Story, I found myself being pleasantly surprised and liking how we got an insight into Cade and Mare's past. The tension, pining and eventual heartbreak had me going on an emotional rollercoaster. Because it felt real. So, so raw and real. And I loved it. Every single second I spent reading this book was SO worth it. No regrets. The side characters were equally likeable and I found myself shedding a tear or two during the heavier, more emotional parts of the story. All I can say is that despite my heart being put through the wringer, I'm glad that Mare and Cade finally found their way back to each other in the end. Also, the smut in this book was SCORCHING y'all. There's just something about a small town romance MMC with a filthy mouth ya know?😏💦

*Thank you to Kat Singleton and Valentine PR for providing me with an ARC!

- miscommunication trope
- second chance romance
- small town romance
- unrequited love (initially) + mutual pining + angst
- best friend's brother
- slowburn
- death of loved ones, mentions of cancer, absent parents, etc so please check the TWs

I don’t think Kat is the author for me. Her book teasers suck me in and get my hopes up. It happened with BTWL and now it’s happened with this book.

This book starts so heavy with 2 big parental losses. And I do feel those losses shaped Mare and Cade…in a neutral way. Mare in her want to stay in Sutten but needing to leave. Cade needing Mare to go and follow her dreams, but also wanting her to stay.

Rewrite Our Story was supposed to be an epic small town, second chance romance. When in reality it’s just a book full of miscommunication. There is no third act breakup because they spend the whole book deciding if they want to be together

Let me preface this by saying that, while Kat’s writing style is not the style for me, she does appeal to a majority of others.

Some scenes were too drawn out for my liking. 6 chapters of Mare’s first time could’ve been condensed to 3 chapters. Some readers enjoy long smut scenes with a lot of talking…I do not. This book was sweet but it also verged on the too sweet with way too much pining for me.

Thank you Valentine PR for an ARC in exchange for an honest review

DNF at 53%. Unlikeable, weak characters. All the “punishment” Cade was inflicting on Mare because she didn’t come back to him is ridiculous. He pushed her away and then is pissed that she stayed away. Then when she comes back, he’s hot and cold. What a jerk. He wasn’t honest with her and didn’t tell her how he felt and made a decision for her and makes sure he hurts her so she leaves and then he’s mad. All the hurt they felt was because of him. She should run far away from him instead of being all turned on by his awful treatment of her. Not sure why this is so highly rated.

When I read Black Ties & White Lies, I said something to the effect that Kat Singleton gave us every single thing that would make a trope book like that stand out.

After reading Rewrite Our Story, I can confidently say she nailed small town, second chance romance. Because I finished this book unapologetically in one sitting as the sun came up.

📔 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼: Rewrite Our Story, book one in a new small town romance character series by Kat Singleton.

📚𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Second chance romance, small town romance, friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers, best friend’s brother, angsty romance, he loved her all along.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Marigold has loved Cade her entire life. And one summer, she gets what she’s always dreamed of: his love back. But when she leaves for college everything breaks down. Now, seven years later, Mare is back for the funeral of the woman who raised her, and she has to face the man who broke her heart.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Couldn’t. Put. It. Down.

You guys know I’m a straight sucker for second chance, and man did Kat Singleton deliver it with a punch to the gut. She did it with a dual timeline that made you fall in love with the pair, then the dual POV made your heart just break.

This book was so full of tension and unabashed spice. I was totally sucked in from the start, and man when I say Cade is all you’d want in a small town book boyfriend. He’s grumpy and possessive and then once the dam breaks and he speaks his truth, he’s one of the swooniest men I’ve read. Not to mention the mouth on that man!

One thing I absolutely love in a second chance is the “in-between” of things. Like what the characters do when they’re apart that shows their love has spanned the time. And I’m NOT going to ruin it because I want you to go all heart-eyes on your own, but Cade’s “in-between” was ✨chef’s kiss✨.

I also loved that there was no third-act breakup in this one.

This was a great start to the series and I’m looking forward to more from Sutton Mountain.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗲 l 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 5/5 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀: If you want more Kat Singleton, I highly recommend her rockstar romance Founded on Deception and her billionaire romance Black Ties & White Lies. If you want another solid second chance romance, check out the Last Second Chance by Lucy Score.
