Tabby Fowle knows the legend. Hell, everyone does. As a child, she—the last of the Fowle bloodline—was warned to stay far, far away from Foul Meadow. She was warned of what would happen if she ever stepped foot into that place of rot again. She promised her grandmother to never go there and had no intention of ever breaking that vow.
UNTIL NOW.
As the traveling lamp lights, so must the three hearths, and the Blood of the Fowle will summon the ancestral ghouls from their centuries-old graves.
With her film crew in tow, Tabby returns to Foul Meadow. She sees dollar signs and, with her family name attached to the project, she thinks—no, she knows—this’ll be just the ticket she needs to fame and fortune. At the very least, it’s what she’s managed to convince herself and her team of.
Unfortunately, video cameras are no match for a demon’s thirst for vengeance. After nearly two hundred years of waiting, the Odious Ghouls have finally been summoned and will—once again—‘gild the land ‘i their crimson plague.’
From the author of Malevolent Nevers and The Glowing Trilogy comes this campy, monster-fest, deriving inspiration from both 80’s era creature-flicks & the contemporary found footage sub-genre.
Tom Rimer is the author of THE GLOWING Trilogy, MALEVOLENT NEVERS, ODIOUS GHOULS, and BUOYGEIST. His work can also be found in a number of anthologies - including 13 Tales to Give You Night Terrors (2015), The Nightmare Never Ends (2023), Dreamcaught (2025), and Samhain Screams (2025). He is a member of the HWA.
Yuck! Lots of slimy, rotting ghouls amongst these pages!
I love the premise: a film crew with ties to cursed land head out to create a found footage film. They definitely end up with more than they bargained for.
The characters were fairly well written; I despised Tammy, and loved Skip & Peg. The other characters were just more filler. I’m curious about the Fowle ancestors’ background, why were they shunned from the village initially?
This book was a spooky, gory read, so expect lots of body parts flying through the air!
Thank you to the author for a copy to read & review!
Odious Ghosts can only be described as a branch of trauma horror – well I am thoroughly traumatised, and I read a lot of horror! This is sick and twisted. Tom Rimer is a horror mastermind.
Odious Ghouls. What does those two words mean to you? What is the image that is conjured up when you picture the context in which they’d exist. I went blind with this one. I really enjoyed Malevolent Nevers released by Tom Rimer last year, so I had full confidence that this was going to float my darkened heart. When family elders warn you to stay away from hallowed ground, you better just believe them. When hell threatens to walk the earth due to your family curse you better take note and listen or otherwise end up like our fabled characters.
Tom Rimer has created Odious Ghouls with a touch of evil, a sparkle of gore and a dusting of murderous spirits. Kind of like a Mary Poppins on crack.
I didn’t know what to expect, like I said, I went in blind. I can’t thank my early self for that decision enough – it made the punch all that more potent, my jaw feels slack just thinking about it. One minute the characters are having a dander around the woods and the next the gory action begins, one minute they’re having a nice drink around a campfire and the next the bloods flowing like the river Nile. Tom Rimer leads his readers by the nose. There’s no better way to upend characters lives by introducing appearing/disappearing houses that harbour axe wielding maniacs.
Tabby Fowle needs to make a decision. Life hasn’t panned out the way she expected. Her foray into Hollywood has fallen flat on its face. She has her team, but the award-winning film has evaded her, until now. She knows the legend. She’s been warned about it her whole life. Her grandmother tells her to keep away from the meadow, known as, Foul Meadow. If a Fowle lights the hearth of the houses, then hell will be unleashed upon the earth. Their plague will become our own. Ominous thoughts. She decides to ignore this though and asks her team to join her on the shooting of a film that will make them, its their golden ticket and they all readily agree.
I truly enjoyed the narrative style. The going back and forth between the three main characters, the sense of urgency never left me as I found myself racing to find answers, to root for characters, and to cry when the delightful Mr. Rimer killed off someone I was hoping would make it till the end. We were met with secrets, deceits, and bloodshed. I felt like a stray bullet – I was hitting wall after wall; I was dizzy with excitement and anxiety. Every step I took, introduced me to yet more surprises. One scene left me shook and that was with Metal (a character that is complex in his many strands of humanity.)
Kids, heed your elders. Oh sure, they may send you socks for Christmas or yell at you to get off their lawns but when it comes to old family curses, they know what they're talking about. Even with a lifetime of bad dreams about this place, Tabby gets a little too big for her britches and ignores the warnings when she grows up. She puts her film crew and the very likeable Skip, in danger with no hesitation. I don't like her much. Lots of character, action, violence and gore. These ghouls are indeed odious.
This one was a lot of fun. Tom Rimer nailed that 80s VHS horror vibe, with foul creatures, buckets of blood and a lot of wit that brought me a chuckle along the way. The names in this are brilliant, and Skip Alden turned out to be a great character. The pace is fast. The second we get to Fowle Meadow, it never drops.
If you're looking for a fun & fast-paced story with some demons & ghouls and cabins in the woods, then this story is for you! This was a fun one. I enjoyed the fact that the story was told from multiple POVs, kept it interesting. Definitely action packed, you won't get bored with this story!
I enjoyed this book. The author keeps the chapters short and gives the characters their own point of view, which I love. You also don't have to wait a long time for action. It had an old bloody horror movie feel mixed with The Evil Dead vibe. I can definitely see Bruce Campbell playing Skip!
For transparency sake, I'll be upfront that Tom and I have a series we do together on Found Footage on my channel and we've become what I consider friends. But it didn't start that way. I was a fan of Tom's writing before we became co-hosts. I've read his Glowing Trilogy and Malevolent Nevers. So when he said this was inspired by our favorite subgenre of horror, I was more than a little intrigued.
I was given the opportunity to read this early, but I just finished my second read of my physical copy I ordered upon release. Here are my spoiler free thoughts on Tom Rimer's fifth book 'Odious Ghouls'.
For starters, this book moves similarly to his others. It is fast paced and moves like a movie. Which, if you've read other things I've written, is something I'm a fan of. The story doesn't lull and the gore and scares don't really give you a break. Another consistency is the characters. They'll make you laugh, they'll annoy you, and you'll find yourself picking a favorite.
What is different about this book is the overall feel. This dives into a much deeper story and gets pretty dark. There is a lot more body gore and violence than in his previous books; and that is far from a complaint! There were scenes in this book that reminded me of The Blair Witch Project, Outlast, there are even parts that made me think of the horror game The Evil Within. This feels like you're reading a found footage movie and I loved the clear calls to the subgenre.
Tom is a consistently entertaining writer. I recommend Odious Ghouls, and everything else he has written. I can't to see what he does next!
Has to be the novel Demon Wind was based on. I know that doesn’t make any sense but time travel is real, k? K. So, yeah, this totally felt like the far superior and better put together version of Demon Wind, but thrown in a blender with the Evil Dead movies. Tom Rimer writes characters in Odious Ghouls that instantly draw you in; you’re invested in what they’re doing from the first time you meet them. This is what makes this book so much more than just an ooey gooey carnival ride (which, it totally is an ooey gooey carnival ride). Rimer manages to change his writing voice throughout the book too, matching the tone of the scene. In the quiet moments, his writing is thoughtful, in the action scenes his writing is fast paced. Totally recommend this for fans of the late 80’s VHS tapes with demon in the title; Demons, Night of the Demons, Demon Wind… Demon Knight(not the 80’s I know)… you get it. K thx.
This is a fast read, I mean like razor sharp, action packed. I didn't know quite what I was getting into when I started it, but if you're squeamish, I'd say give this a pass. Now, I'm not a fan of found footage on tv or movies ( all that bouncing around makes me motion sick) but reading it is absolutely perfect. This is a new concept, a found footage book, at least to me. If you're looking for something to zip through, something with 80s vibes, and blood and guts, pick this up for your summer beach read.
Absolutely loved this book! Based on a found footage theme it provides the reader with a full back story without losing the excitement of the main story. It is quite fast paced from the start and becomes non stop once they reach the meadow. Strong story line and great, well crafted characters made reading a pleasure. Horror, creepiness and gore is in abundance and not used as “shock tactics” but enhancing the experience. All in it was a fun read and can’t wait to read more from this author. As a side note - had I seen this book in a store I would not have given it a chance because of the cover which for me does not do the book justice - just my opinion. I received this book in exchange for an honest review
I absolutely loved this book. The start reminded me of Blair Witch Project or another found footage type story, which I loved. I love how it turned an old family legend into something so much more. This is definitely something I would recommend to anyone looking for a fast paced book that takes you for an enjoyable ride. I did receive a free copy for a review but everything I have said is my personal opinion. I will be recommending this to a few friends.
Woah! What just happened? I was hesitant to read this horror novel because it is not my usual type of literature, but I'm glad I did!
Undoubtedly a page-turning, unsettling, and twisted tale that increased my anxiety. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation! The characters captivate you right away. They stayed in my thoughts clearly. The characters Skip and Peg were my favorites. I didn’t like Tabby from the start. There are a lot of tense situations and I could visualize every detail. Each chapter is brief and is based on a different character’s point of view. The action doesn’t take long—FYI, there’s a lot of gore!
You won’t want to stop reading once you get going! This is unlike anything I’ve ever read. My stomach churned throughout the book, yet (gasp) I really liked it! I believe I see a sequel in the future. Tom Rimer is a master storyteller. He (cough) helped me overcome my aversion to scary literature. I whole heartily endorse his book.
✨️Titled: Odious Ghouls✨️ ✨️Author: Tom Rimer✨️ ✨️Ratings: 4/5⭐️✨️
Wtf did I just read?
What a wild ride! This book was not what I was expecting. It was so much better! Scary af, gory as well. My heart was pounding hard throughout the book. I hated Tabby from the start, and that didn't change throughout the book. The cover is simply gorgeous 😍. And that ending... could we have a sequel to the book?🤔
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this but, man, it was a greatly pleasant surprise once I started.
Tabby is the last of the Fowl family line. She's been told to never step foot in the meadow of the family property from a young age.
But she and some fellow friends trying to make it big in Hollywood decide to make a documentary about her family and its history, picking up an older man to work a camera along the way, and they proceed to defy what she's been taught her entire life. They are going to the meadow to perform a "ritual" for the sake of fame, never believing it will work.
But, of course, things go from bad to absolutely horrifying as they soon realise that they've made a grave error.
This book rips along with the pedal to the floor and never lets up until the last page is turned. Tabby becomes sort of possessed, three houses are explored and each hold secrets and evil more terrifying than the last.
The family curse is real and ready to have its bloody revenge on anyone that dares enter its hunting grounds. Who will survive this onslaught and who will be torn apart by these odius ghouls? You'll have to read it to find out but with a great narrative and fast paced story and characters you'll love (or sometimes despise) finding these answers will be a pleasure!
This is a fun novel that will have you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it!
Set in rural Massachusetts, Odious Ghouls is a sick and scary tale. A homage to 80’s style horror, Odious Ghouls sees a group of filmmakers journeying to film a documentary. And before long they encounter horrors one can only find in their worst nightmares. As he previously did with Malevolent Nevers, author Tom Rimer shows he has a knack for delivering creepy imagery and scares galore. If you’re in the mood for something scary, read this book.
I read this book in one day. When I wasn’t able to read, I found myself constantly wondering what was going to happen next. I cant really explain how much I loved this book, but it’s a lot. It had everything you look for, characters you can relate to and visualize, believable characters, gore and horror and a sense of foreboding and gloom throughout. I wish I could read it again and again, for the first time, every time. Super enjoyable!
3.25 rounding down to 3 for GoodReads. Super fun, rompy story that plays off of some favorite tropes! With just a little bit of polishing, I would've given this book a higher rating. I am someone for whom misspellings or grammatical errors really take them out of the story and this book did not have many but it had a few that really took me out. This is the first novel I have read by Rimer and the writing was okay but nothing spectacular. This novel keeps a fast pace from just about the beginning and does not let up. I loved the different kill scenes and ghouls featured in this one. The setup is such an intriguing one and anyone who loves found film would get a kick out of this novel. The end both wraps up the story and leaves that one little window open for more just like all good horror does. Super quick read that would be really fun around Halloween times.
This was a well written fast paced novel with a ton of action. This is extreme horror, so it’s bloody and perfect for people who love 80s slasher movies
Happy Belated Release Day to Tom Rimer and his newest creation, Odious Ghouls! This book is packed full of gross monsters, decaying flesh, and nasty liquids I can't even fathom the smell of.🤢 Just to prepare you for what you'll find, I had to save my favorite line: "Her head, now completely bald, wiggled as squirmed as she'd donned a macabre crown of leeches and grubs." Ew. So much ew.
Tom does a great job of setting up the personalities for the characters, and it doesn't take long to sort out who you're rooting for in the story. I was shocked as I was reading through, because as soon as I realized sh!t hits the fan, I glanced up at the page number and it was EARLY. Well guess what... hitting the fan that early means a lot more monsters, and a lot more destruction.
As a huge found footage fan, I love how he was able to translate that into a book. The story gets so intense, you forget there are even cameras involved. The questions that normally plague us, like "Why are they still holding a damn camera?!" don't even apply! It's a win-win: character introductions without the awkwardness that is rather prevalent in found footage, you have a front seat to the action, fantastic mental images of all the monsters, and all the dread and cringing that go along with this kind of plot. Learning about Tabitha and her film crew's return to where she grew up is absolutely fascinating, and hooks you as the history of the family unravels.
If you're looking for a unique take on old family legends, found footage style, and saving the world from the gates of Hell as motivation to keep pushing and survive, then this fast-paced tale will be right up your alley!
I received a digital copy of Odious Ghouls by Tom Rimer in exchange for an honest review.
Prepare to be immersed in a spine-chilling world where ancient legends come to life in Tom Rimer's "Odious Ghouls." This thrilling tale blends the eerie atmosphere of 80s creature-flicks with the contemporary found footage sub-genre, resulting in a campy and entertaining monster-fest that will delight fans of horror and nostalgia alike.
The story revolves around Tabby Fowle, the last descendant of the Fowle bloodline, who becomes tempted to revisit the forbidden Foul Meadow—a place enveloped in legend and secrets. Rimer skillfully weaves together the elements of folklore and the lure of fame, creating a captivating premise that hooks readers from the very beginning. The promise of ancestral ghouls summoned from their graves adds an ominous layer of anticipation, setting the stage for a suspenseful journey.
One of the highlights is the author's ability to transport readers into a world brimming with macabre wonders. Rimer's vivid descriptions breathe life into the nightmarish creatures that inhabit the pages, making them truly come alive in the reader's imagination.
Overall, "Odious Ghouls" is a highly enjoyable read that serves up generous helpings of blood-curdling encounters and heart-stopping frights. Tom Rimer's storytelling prowess shines through in this engaging tale of supernatural vengeance and the consequences of tempting fate... 😈
This was a fun read. Despite being warned a child, Tabby takes her camera crew to Fowle Meadow where she expects to find great shots to be used as found footage. Instead, she is faced with ghouls and discovers why she was warned away from the place. The characters experience many terrors, and horror and gore are abundant. The story is relentlessly fast paced and has lots of gore while still maintaining a connection to the overall plot. This was a great, fun read and I would definitely recommend it!
I was not quite sure what to expect from this book, but I definitely got more than I bargained for. This book starts out with a bang and literally does not let up. The action and gore were great. I loved the character Skip, and absolutely hated Tabby (before and after). And the ending was one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. I could easily see this being a movie. I can’t wait to read more by Tom Rimer.
