Understand Islam --  the fastest growing religion in Canada With the arrest of a Muslim terrorist cell in Toronto, Canadians are questioning the validity of a religion that seems to condone violence to meet its ends. These criminal elements are challenging our way of life. They are challenging our tolerance and acceptance. Their actions are sewing the seeds of bigotry. How can we respond to this?

The first step is to become educated about the nature and tenets of Islam, its many forms and expressions, and how it may—or may not—conflict with a liberal-democratic society such as is Canada’s. How does the practice of Islam intersect with women’s rights? Religious liberty? Canadian law and institutions? The Christian faith? The Jewish faith?

The thorny issue of jihad must be addressed. What leads to the radicalization of Canadian-born Muslims? What does the Qur’an actually say about peace, tolerance and one’s neighbour?
