A mother’s unconditional love for her child swells deep within her heart. The protective instinct is undeniable.
When Evelyn Stanton became a mother, she pledged that her children would be her number one priority. Even though as teenagers, they require less time and attention, they continue to be her passion, some might call it an obsession. Motherhood is her heart and soul. Her children give her life purpose.
However, when her oldest son Hudson displays the classic signs of addiction, Evelyn’s snowplow parenting can’t pave the way wide enough to save him. While she focuses her unwavering attention on him, her marriage suffers, and the life that she created and managed for years spirals out of her control.
Before she can save her family from the depths of addiction, someone is murdered, and Evelyn is arrested. Will Evelyn be able to protect her family from behind bars?

Emersyn Park was born, raised, and still lives in the Midwest with her two sons, husband, and their spoiled dog, Bandit. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Minnesota State University.
When she grows up, she wants to be a full-time writer.
This book is like an amazing roller coaster. It starts out like women's fiction, eliciting a lot of emotions. But I know Emerysn's books, and how thrilling they can be so this beginning is like the start of the big hill. You are slowly traveling up waiting to hit the peak. You are full of anticipation and excitement. That anticipation continues to build and build, it's a great first act. And then you hit the top, the speed picks up, the excitement and enthusiasm intensifies.
And at the end you are like "damn that was great!"
I loved this book, so much. The emotional side, the mystery, the layers, all of it.
About the book⤵️ Eve's world is turned upside down when her teen son struggles with addiction. Her family is struggling to keep it together while trying to save him from himself. Adding fuel to the fire, someone dies, and Eve is arrested for the crime.
Like any good mother, Evelyn only wants her kids to be happy and healthy. Her primary focus for the last eighteen years has been to provide with a stable, loving home. So, when her family’s safety and future is threatened, she does what any parent would do - she protects them.
Don’t assume my silence equals forgiveness, and never underestimate my ability to deliver what you deserve.
One of my most anticipated reads of this spring definitely did NOT disappoint!! 🧡
I’m a psychological thriller junkie, so when I heard Emersyn was coming out with her latest, I was STOKED! I was also lucky enough to be a part of her Street Team and receive an ARC to read prior to pub date- so strap in for my thoughts on this killer novel!
First off, before even beginning the book I fell in love with its vibrant, colorful cover. While reading, I realized how much the cover image connected to the actual storyline, and wanted to give a shout-out to both the author and the creator of the cover for this great design choice! 🌳
I really enjoyed the way this story was told in alternating past and present timelines, and was able to connect with the main characters right away. Evelyn’s naivety was a bit frustrating at times, but I genuinely felt for her as a mother struggling to keep her family under control and her children safe.
I loved Evie’s relationship with Frank and some of my favorite scenes of the novel were when the two of them were together. Everyone needs a Frank in their lives! I also really loved the Puppet’s Shadow reference that snuck into this story (if you haven’t read that one yet, you totally should)!! 🔥
This was a fantastic read from start to finish, with excellent pacing and twists that completely kept me on my toes! If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, or stories focused around family drama and relationships- you NEED to check this one out!
Thank you so much @emersynjulespark for having me on your street team, and for my e-copy to read and honestly review! I love being a part of your crew and absolutely loved this book 🧡
Holy crap! Well Emersyn Park has done it again! This book was so freaking good. I loved the small chapters. Also that ending! I did NOT see that coming. My jaw literally dropped. I read this so fast because it was so good. I can't wait to read more from her. She is such an amazing author and I'm so glad I get to be on her team!
Wow! It took me longer to finish that I anticipated..but I wanted to savor it and didn’t want it to end! Absolutely love the twists and turns, which always keep me guessing. You are so talented Emersyn, proud of you, thank you for the book! 😘
This psychological thriller was to die for! I'm grateful to have received an ARC before publication date!
I was captivated instantly. Emersyn Park captured me with the detailed descriptions of the relationships and characters she thoughtfully created. I sat on the edge of my seat awaiting this one to unfold its truths, and when it did, it was SO satisfying.
The characters made me laugh, the events and family experiences were relatable, and I couldn't get enough. (Honestly, can we have more Frank & Vera, please? 😉)
Secrets Maple Keeps, or SMK as I’ve deemed it, is told in 1st person from Evelyn’s POV and alternates between “now” and “then”. This book starts as a slow burn as you get to really know the main characters but the suspense and twists quickly picked up! I absolutely loved the characters and the fact that Emersyn pulled from real life experiences to tell this story. As someone who grew up with a family full of addicts, it really hit home. I absolutely loved the characters (Frank and Evelyn’s relationship warmed my heart). I also loved the twists (that very last one shocked me because I thought I had it figured out!!). I also really appreciated Emersyn’s heartfelt acknowledgement at the end. Definitely recommend this one!
Evelyn's family is everything to her. But when her son becomes addicted to drugs, she does what she can to try to help him and the family. When a neighbourhood murder occurs, Evelyn is arrested. A mama bear will do anything to look after her child. But how can she do this behind bars? Cue her bestie Frank, a lawyer who takes on her case, gathering evidence.
I'm so pleased to be on the street team for this fantastic book. Emersyn Park once again had me hooked from page one, eager to know where the storyline was going. If you've read any of her books before, you'll know how addictive they can be. This one was no different. And everyone needs a bestie like Frank! Pick this one up - you won't be disappointed!
As a mom, I can relate to the struggles that Evelyn faces when trying to help her son! What would you do to help your child with addiction? How does one make decisions that can affect your family's life forever? Frank was my favorite side-kick! He was good for a laugh and kept the mood light. The twists and turns kept me reading/speculating from the beginning to the very end! This book does not disappoint and is a great read!!!
This was my first book by Park, and it did not disappoint. This suspenseful family drama is told in dual timelines from Evelyn’s perspective. I loved how the past and present converged and how this story came together. Evelyn was such a strong character which was evident by the way she was willing to do anything to protect her family, even after her son becomes addicted to drugs. She had the dream life until it all came crashing down, and I loved how the relationships in her life played such a pivotal role in this story.
I don’t want to say too much because it will give things away and spoil this book for you, but this story was written beautifully and really had me guessing throughout. And let me just say that ending…mind blown!
I highly recommend reading the thank you note at the end of the book. It tells of Emersyn’s real life story having a child dealing with addiction. I love when authors put a piece of themselves in their books, and she definitely did with this one. I look forward to reading more from this author!
First, thank you Emersyn for having me on your team and for the gifted copy.
Holy shit balls y’all! Secrets Maple Keeps has now become my favorite Emersyn Park book. This one is freakin amazing! SMK has one POV- but this doesn’t matter because you have some great characters… like Vera - and dual timelines which goes from now to then.
I loved the mama bear references throughout the whole book. Really shows the lengths a mother will go just to protect her children.
I really can’t gush about this book enough. Make sure you add this to your summer reading TBR! And go buy it now!
What a thriller. I could not put it down. The paragraph in chapter 5 that talks about two different type of ppl gave me the chills. Loved it ❤️. 👏👏, well done Emersyn, well done👏👏
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you have not read Secrets Maple Keeps by Emersyn Park, go get it immediately! The twist & turns will keep you intrigued from the beginning!
Evie has it all! The best friend, The husband, & 2 kids! Things start to spiral when she learns that her son is using drugs. Not only is he using, but his friend/neighbor, whom is like their own child, is the one selling them to him. The close friendship between the parents starts to deteriorate & life starts to spiral out of control! People aren't always who you think they are! Sometimes the ones closest to you will turn on you.
As a mama bear myself, I completely related to Evelyn doing anything for her children and whatever the cost! I loved the characters and the story with its twists and turns! Emersyn Park has done it again! I was so lucky to be part of the ARC group for this novel! I have loved all of EP's novels and this was no exception ❤️
I could not wait to get my hands on this book after reading Emersyn Park’s other two novels. When I found out I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader and get a jump start on this book, I snuggled in with my cup of coffee and found myself stuck on the couch until I finished.
Being a mom myself, my heart instantly connected to the main character, Evelyn, who finds herself fighting to get her son back after falling into addiction. As Evelyn tries to uncover truths and get to the bottom of what’s going on with her son, new questions and betrayals arise, and Evelyn finds herself in her own kind of trouble.
The Secrets Maple Keeps alternates between then and now timelines, which flow nicely and keep you engrossed in the story. The twists and turns and subtle hints along the way will keep you turning the pages and needing more. If that’s not enough, Emersyn has a talent for developing characters. Wait until you meet Frank, Evelyn’s best friend and lawyer. The relationship Frank and Evelyn develop and their friendly banter had me cracking up and falling in love with their friendship. Everyone needs a friend like Frank.
Get yourself a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed.
At times the story felt a bit chaotic and all over the place. I do feel that seemed to changed just over half way through the book. The plot seemed to become clearer on both purpose and thought. It was much more enjoyable to me.
Evelyn reminded me a lot of the mom in Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry. It was difficult for me to connect with her, in spite of having kids too, as I felt she was incredibly rash and borderline insane. I felt the same after reading Berry’s novel. Upon finishing the story you find out what has driven her to this level of crazy. I don’t believe any of her actions though are that of a sane person. Issues with her son and drugs seemed to push her over the edge. And when she was already living a life that wasn’t fulfilling, it seems rational to believe she would unravel as she did.
My favorite character was Frank. He was just so adorable and funny. I found myself feeling like he was somebody I could be friends with and want to be around. He was the highlight of the book for me.
Emersyn Park is a great author and I absolutely love her other pieces. This one just didn’t resonate with me quite like the others had. I do look forward to more of her books in the future.
If a book is written by Emersyn Park, there’s a 100% chance I’m going to read it and love it.
I always feel so honored whenever Emersyn asks me to be a part of her ARC team and this time was no different.
I was really excited going into this one and so happy coming out of it. This isn’t your typical “edge of my seat” type thriller. It’s calm, it’s cool, it’s collected. But it’s also secretly chaotic and everything that makes a good thriller.
You just have to get to the end to realize it.
Frank & Evelyn’s relationship was to die for - I love the best friend for life theme and watching that play out on the side skirts of the actual main plot points.
My heart broke for Evelyn and having to deal with her son’s addiction. It’s something I simply can’t wrap my head around. Evelyn was a lovable character despite the obviously battles she was facing. I was always rooting for her.
The ending was satisfying ….to say the least. I don’t want to say too much but just know this one is totally worth picking up or bumping up on your TBR!
I can always count on Emersyn for a captivating, thrilling, and twisty read. And everyone else should too!
Let’s talk about how gorgeous this cover is first! Who can resist a cover with trees and fall vibes? Two of my favorite things! I am such a sucker!
This is a story about a mama bear, Evelyn, that will stop at nothing to make things right and protect her child. Unfortunately, l we know as a parents, not everything does as planned. Her son Hudson makes some choices landing him in a bad spot fighting addiction. As the story unravels she finds Evelyn finds herself in jail fighting for her freedom. The big question is, did she do it and does she deserve to get out?
Emersyn does a great job flip flopping back and forth between the two timelines of then and now. She utilizes the past and present to help you understand how the characters have landed in the position they are in. I think my favorite part of the book is the best friend relationships between her Evelyn and Frank. They met in a pool hall and grew up backing each other. They have a funny relationship and a ride or die attitude. Simply love their relationship ☺️
If you’re looking for a book that will give you whiplash and you will not see the ending coming consider this one!
Now, you all know I don’t have kids. I do however, understand the love, devotion and maternal feelings one has for their children. When @emersynjulespark let me know she had a new book coming out-I needed it. I loved Puppets Shadow. This book is different in a lot of ways but, it still has familial bonds at its core. When I read the Afterword and saw that Emersyn used her own personal experience to add the addiction portion of this novel, my heart broke and I had even more respect of her.
How far would you go for someone you love? That is the essential question. There are so many twists in this one I could have started a fire with how fast I was flipping pages. Nothing is what it seems. The deception is so thick and the revenge SO SWEET. I think my favorite character was Frank. He had a lot of funny one liners and was so loyal it broke my heart.
This is a lot more than just a thriller. It has massive amounts of heart and will make you think long after it is done. Another grand slam Emersyn!!!!
Another impressive twisty psychological thriller by Emersyn! This thriller did not disappoint! I love books that keep me up past my bedtime. Yes I know we hear that phrase (past my bedtime) quite often but you know it is true. This book is worth losing your sleep! The storyline is interesting and believable dealing with family issues, emotional issues, and addiction. Also (just like Emersyn’s two other thrillers) the writing is first-rate! “Secrets Maple Keeps” is about Evelyn and the relationships she has with her family members. Evelyn is a loving mother, almost to the point of being obsessive. Her son falls into addiction and the family is doing what they feel is best for him. Evelyn is doing EVERYTHING to hold it together. During this extremely stressful time a person dies and Evelyn gets the blame. Stress beyond belief!
I like the characters in this book. They each seem like people I would meet in the “real world”. Especially Frank, I would like a Frank in my world! His sweet relationship with Evelyn is endearing. So this is my honest review, I really liked this book and I do recommend giving it a read!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC, advanced copy, of “Secrets Maple Keeps” from the author. This has not in any way swayed my review. My review is based on my opinion alone!
Releasing her third book in as many years, Emersyn Park is NOT an author to sleep on! Secrets Maple Keeps is her latest psychological thriller centered around a woman named Evelyn, a self-proclaimed momma bear that will stop at nothing to protect her family from the destruction drug addiction was causing.
I loved the nod to a previous novel, "Puppet's Shadow" and the relationship with her best friend Frank! The ending was very surprising, I thought I had it figured out half way through and I was dead wrong.
The author's note at the end made me tear up...Emersyn, I am so proud of your son, and of the support you and your family provided. All too often, that story does not have a good ending. Also, seeing little old me in your acknowledgements is just mind blowing! You keep on writing, and I'll keep on reading!
I loved this book! Emersyn Park has done it again! This book was a PAGE TURNER for me from the start. I loved how she went back and forth between THEN and NOW and then brought both together through the rising action and climax. WELL DONE!! As a mom, it was very easy to relate to Evelyn in so many ways. My heart ached for her pain. Frank - ahhhh! I would love to meet him in real life! William … I’m too nice to say what I really think about him.
Emersyn’s use of figurative language throughout the book is top-notch and so creative! The suspense - and wanting to know what happened - kept me reading (when I should have been doing other things! Ha!). Just when I think I have it figured out … BAM!! Plot twist!!
And, might I just add that the cover of this book is probably my favorite cover of any book ever … it’s so intriguing!!
I am honored to have been included in your ARC team Emersyn and thank you so much for my gorgeous gifted copy!
Let’s start there. The artwork on this cover is STUNNING! Every time I look at it I notice new details. It’s definitely one to showcase on those shelves 😍
At the heart of this story is a fierce mother doing everything in her power to protect her teenage son struggling with addiction. She is pushed to her limit, ultimately having to decide how far she is willing to go for the sake of her family.
There are dual timelines (then and now), which I always like. One of the things I really enjoyed was watching the evolution of the friendship between our MC (mama bear, Evelyn) and her best friend, Frank. He turned out to be both the comic relief and voice of reason. I think the antics of these two deserved their own book! Hint hint Emersyn 😉
If you’re looking for family drama, mystery and dual timelines and are into relatable stories of wrestling with motherhood then you won’t want to miss this one!
I’ve been sitting on this review for a bit now, because one I needed to marinate in my thoughts, and two I needed to have time to properly pick my jaw up off the floor after finishing it.
Bookstagram has been such a fun place to meet fellow book lovers and authors, and this author in particular holds a special place in my heart. I’ve had the privilege to be on her ARC team for all three of her masterpieces, and she is so good at spinning twists you don’t see coming.
Secrets Maple Keeps is a story of a mother’s unwavering love for her son. Just how far would you be willing to go to save someone you love? Evelyn Stanton is about to find out…
Told through Evelyn’s eyes, this story bounces from past to present as we piece together a story of love, betrayal, and murder.
“Never mess with a mama bear” this book was great, so many heavy themes done really well. Pulling on the heartstrings of all mothers and how far they would go for their children.
I always like alternating timelines that slowly reveal the twisty truth and I really enjoyed the characters especially Frank. He’s just so likeable.
An all around good thriller and I don’t mind when I get a well tied up ending!
I was given an ARC of this book by my lovely friend, Emersyn, in exchange for my honest review.
Secrets Maple Keeps is an all-around addicting book. Evelyn’s love for her children and determination to do what she needs to do to protect them is strong. I was captivated by her story. Up until the last few pages, I was unsure how this story would end and I was surely not disappointed!
Emersyn has a way of writing stories that keep me up to finish late into the night. I am amazed by her talent and passion she puts into each and every book!
This is gonna be hard to review in depth without giving any spoilers. So I will warn you now, if you do not want spoilers for this book, please do not read this review.
From the beginning, my attention was caught. Then even more so when we had The jumping back-and-forth between timelines. When jumping back to the past, it helped us better understand our main character and what she is capable of. It also showed us the connections she had and the motive behind her recent actions.
About a little over halfway through, I understood where the book was going. At first I was going back and forth of “oh did William set Evie up?” and then “oh no, she masterminded this whole thing to make it look like he framed her when she is really going to frame him”. I ended up being right which was satisfying. There were also the small little details I didn’t see coming or how it would all play out until I was reading it. I enjoyed Vera helping Evie and getting the whole thing into motion to stack evidence against William. Some people would kill their partner for cheating on them multiple times, but not Evie. No, she committed murder, then framed her husband to put him away for life and divorced him. All while being able to launder money from the woman he cheated on her with and getting rid of her son’s drug dealer. Evie may look all sweet and innocent, but she is anything but that.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend the read!

I liked this book. As a newer author, I can’t judge her writing. I understood her thoughts and the plot, but I found it to be choppy at time. The character development made a lot more sense at the end of the book. Overall I give this book 3 stars because of the confusion I had throughout the book, but was able to wrap all my thoughts up at the end
