Everything in war is very simple, but the simplest thing is difficult.

Admiral Jack Romanoff and his crew have fought the invaders to a standstill and have plans to strike them even harder, but that won’t be easy. The Novarites know about them now and will be ready, the Locusts are too strong to beat in a head-on fight, and the Poseidon Group has evaded them.

War is the realm of uncertainty.

A new enemy might be on the horizon, but Jack couldn’t afford to be distracted at a critical juncture like this. Everyone’s plans were shrouded in the fog of war, and no one knew what to expect in the cauldron of battle. Even so, his ship would fight. Humanity demanded no less than victory.

Courage, above all things, is the first quality of a warrior.

Ok, so not sure why all of the good reviews on this book. Here are my thoughts.
1) Great series up until this book, really have been enjoying it so far.
2) If Chaney actually contributed or read any of this particular book he should be ashamed of himself.
3) It was tedious and oh so boring.
4) The vast majority of this piece of crap was about Lisa, Christine and Patrick who had dinner a lot and spent chapters and chapters talking about things which should have taken no more than a few pages in total. It was full of boring filler dialogue.
5) One of the best things about this series was the action and battle sequences which were outstanding in the previous books. In this book we get zero action until we are almost 80% done with it. Once we do get a few battle scenes, they are almost ridiculously short to the point that they were an afterthought to be added and rushed through.
6) This is by far the worst book of his I have read so far and I have read over 40 of them.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

A volume in line with the previous volume (and therefore a little action), with a lot of revelations in a single block. Not all chapters are interesting, the narrative flaws (incessant verbiage, summaries, meetings, endless preludes to the action) are still as significant.
All of this sometimes feels like it was written by an AI.
The author refuses the slightest ellipse and imposes scenes on us that are of no interest. If the main plot wasn't so interesting, it would be rubbish.

Brain Fog!☁
Tedious and Boring😵👎
More wordy Minutiae. From the very beginning of this novel there is way too much Background explanations and wordiness. In a word, its BORING!
I will try to keep reading This but I am disappointed in these last 2 books.
Halfway through this book now and it is very tedious with mostly explanations of technical working of various Fusion drive and quantum drive engines. Also there is a lot of technical jargon and explanation of computer programs.
So far no action . Way too much meaningless dialogue that goes on for pages and pages. Not my kind of sci-fi.
It's like these last 2 books were written by someone else.
I got this e-book from amazon with kindle unlimited.
I think I am giving up on this series, After all these books. I am getting to the point where frankly I don't give a dam*.

I’m starting to get bored.

There is a lot of boring “hacking” going on and a lot of unnecessary explanations about marine strategy and such. Patrick is by far the most interesting part of the story but his willingness to give away so many of his secrets really detracts from the believability of the book.

There is so much “do-goodery” where the admiral makes decisions to save the race that is attacking us and losing human lives to do so and so much turmoil over Patrick. An enemy of my enemy is my friend. But not in this book.

The whole series is getting tedious.

Admiral Jack Romanoff and his crew have all made their plans on what everyone will be doing over the next few months, so they are get to doing whatever. And there’s a lot of “whatever”. The Admiral knows he needs to free the planet Vesuvius, but it is too heavily covered by the Locust and their motherships. Instead he’s going to head towards another system name Leaping Deer and see if he can dislodge the swarm of Locust in this system. He knows that he can’t completely destroy the Locust in either system, but he has to start attriting their numbers sooner or later.

Before that mission takes place, the has his Tactical/Weapons officer, Lieutenant Amanda Harris getting his ship ready to install not one, but two of the deadly antiproton weapons that have taken from the Novarites. She’ll definitely have to work with Commander Kelly Danek, the ship’s Chief Engineer to modify and add more power modules to support the new weapons. It’s a big job, but the Admiral wants all of this done before they go one their next mission.

Meanwhile, Sara Nastasi, acting on behalf of the *Hunter*, needed to get Argent to start shipping people out to Port Royal so they could begin work on the next battleship, the “*Scorpius*” . And the people at Port Royal were going to have to get involved in getting the *Taurus* ready to go to the location of the secret/not secret Poseidon Group base and start bringing back the shipyards found there. Additionally, there was some one-hunted and fifty cruisers in the docks almost finished. With some additional work, these could be read to join Admiral Romanoff’s fleet. Yet, everyone knew that couldn’t happen if they didn’t find the crews to man those ships. Obviously, there was a lot of work for the crew of the Hunter, both on and off the ship, as well as the planet Argent. President Caroline Ibarra was fully committed to Jack and his ship to get whatever support they needed.

On the planet itself, Lisa Gain and Christine Hooghuis were becoming more and more involved with this mysterious assassin who went by the name of Patrick. He was a stealthy as anyone could possibly be having broken into the security Presidential Headquarters facility that David and Tina Chen along with Lisa and Christine used as their operations center. He had visited both individually and now had requested to meet with Christine so he could tell her his full story of who he was and where he had come from. They already knew he was not Tardan nor Novarite and certainly not from Earth. Still, he said he was definitely against anything the Poseidon Group was doing and was going to assist the Confederation in getting rid of these traitors.

You’ll get a good dose of space fighting with the *Hunter* doing what it was built for and still wondering how one ship can ever defeat the Novarites. You’ll find out that there could be even more Novarites coming to Confederation space, many more than just one Confederation ship can handle. They have to get another battleship ready for war and put a well-trained crew aboard to operate the ship as it should be operated. It won’t have the significant modifications the *Hunter* has installed, but it will still be a capable battleship to assist the *Hunter* in the fight.

It appears that book 9, “[Ships of the Line](https://amzn.to/3PvdwMp)”, is out now on Amazon. I’ve already added it to my reading list.

I found this book really difficult to read. All of the other books I have inhaled and finished in a few hours, this one I really had to force myself to read. It was just so tedious. I found myself skipping pages. I really wasn't interested in intricacies of hacking by the universe's best hacker who never fails to hack into whatever alien device she is hacking into. We were showing the hacking and then another character was told about the hacking.

The book just reads like filler. There was so little going on. Everything that happened could have been condensed into two chapters and we wouldn't have lost anything in my opinion. It would have been the ideal opportunity to find out what was going on in the confederation with the Poseidon group. Instead we spend the whole book with perfect characters who almost instantly solve every problem i.e. Lisa, Derek, Amanda, Christina and Patrick.

Patrick, I do actually like the character but him and Lisa combined are just a little too Deux ex machina for my liking. I think I am probably going to part ways with this series. I thought at the end of the last book when another alien species was introduced that we have too many aliens. There is more than enough going on without another alien subplot. Honestly, the whole Poseidon group storyline could have been enough going on without any aliens.

I've enjoyed the series up to this point but I didn't enjoy reading this book. It was a chore where very little happened and what did happen felt contrived. It's a shame, I did like some of it but just not enough to read the next book in the series.

Refugees, prisoners, Poseidon Group and The Kingdom

More background is revealed by Patrick, a human from the Kingdom, with advanced technology and knowledge of the Poseidon Group. He shares some of his tech with Lisa and his story with Catherine allowing them to try and infiltrate a Poseidon stronghold.
Meanwhile, the Locusts have taken Leaping Deer and are preparing to attack the Novarites and Tardons that are heading their way. While the military Novarites are their enemy, Jack reasons that he may be able to get the civilian Novarites on side and so attempts to rescue them and any Tardons from the onslaught of the Locusts when they emerge. While they don't have the capability to destroy all the locusts at present, their his tactics should allow them to inflict significant damage.
Suspense, military planning, espionage, advanced technology and weapons, space battles, food and much more all occur within this tale crafting a well-written and entertaining story that leaves you waiting for more.

This book is another good military sci-fi book in The Last Hunter series. As others have pointed out it is perhaps a bit slower than some of the other books in the series but certainly not to the extent of downgrading it to one or two stars as some have done.

The book advances the story and it is much about inverse engineering the bad guys technology and advancing their own. I like that this is happening instead of lazy and sudden jumps just because they happened to get some alien technology to study.

Yes, some parts of the book was indeed a bit too slow and unnecessary. Tedious dinners and dialogues that could have been condensed down a bit for example. Still, it did not really disturb me that much.

I do like that they are finally starting to get some of the other Hunters online. That is one thing that have been bugging me with this series. The author dragged out getting The Hunter fully operation as well as getting the other Hunters online for a few too many books.

If now the author could just get over his Voyager complex and stop completely shooting up Romanoff’s ship in every book it would be nice. I’m also still not too thrilled by this conspiracy part of the book and, for me, this is another part I would really like the author to get over and done with soon.

There are obviously less action in the book than in the previous ones but once it happens towards the end it is quite good as usual.

Overall I enjoyed the book. It is maybe not a strong four star book but a four star one nonetheless.

Great Read

The battleship HUNTER is getting closer to being fully operational while also being able to install new alien drives, machinery and weapons. She is still out matched when faced with the concentrated attacks by large forces. Lisa is getting closer to deciphering the information on the alien computers that may impact the war with the aliens. Now a third alien race of humans the are far more advanced than Confederation may be headed to the cluster. Their solution to possible threats is orbital bombardment, scouring the planet free of all life.

There are parts of this story I enjoyed, but it does have several problems. Like most of the books in this series, there is too much discussion and going of the same ground over and over again. This is partly because they have introduced too many storylines and sub-plots over the series and have to keep trying to fit it all together, often unsuccessfully.
If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.

Fog of War focused on the technical details of how Admiral Jack Romanoff is building up his fleet to drive off the Locusts, the Novarites, and the Poseidon Group. There was some interesting story development on the Poseidon Group mixed in. This feels like a "middle book" that develops details important to the rest of the series. I'm looking forward to seeing what the authors do with the sequel.

Enjoyed this installment in the series

Another book that expanded the story lines. The team carried the battle to the various aliens, and also began to fight back at the Poseidon Group. Problems multiplied, but the team rose to the challenges. The situation continues to be perilous, more so in some ways, but we can count on the team to find a way to save the Confederation and humanity.

The war is ongoing

With the Tardans, their locusts, the Novarites and the Poseidon arrayed against them, Jack Romanoff along with the crew that is growing hugely in competence, have a nearly insoluble situation to resolve.
However it seems that Patrick is from a heretofore unknown society that may pose a threat more deadly than the one facing them already. But duty and honor mean that they refuse to do anything less than the best they can to protect their society.

Great Read

This installment of The Last Hunter, gives you lots of everything you want. Story advancement, action and mystery. Still trying to figure Patric out, Lisa and Christine do something in readable stupid and unsafe, but their actions yield some great rewards. The ship and it’s crew crush it agains a formidable enemy. What a great read.

I am really enjoying this series overall. This installment, however, didn't have a lot of movement. I enjoyed reading about all the things that happened in this one, but it feels like it should have been a part of the previous book, or perhaps part of the next in the series. I am looking forward to the next one.

So many twists and turns.

One step forward two steps back. But our crew keeps pulling victory from the jaws of defeat.

So many innovations on the brink of reality. Breakthroughs that will settle their position of dominance and authority. Everyone just needs to share and disseminate information.

The story is still ok but I'm getting tired of all the talk about plans and problems. I've started skipping paragraphs and pages to move the storu along.. I don't want as much explanation and musing as author injects. He needs to be more concise and less loquatious. I may not finish series or skip to last book.

The story continues and though it is entertaining to read, I enjoyed the earlier story more as Romanoff tries to outmaneuver his confederation superiors.
